Country singer and season 10 American Idol finalist Lauren Alaina has been busy writing and recording a follow-up to her debut album, Wildflower and riding out country radio’s bro domination while she’s at it. After a tough year in which she saw her parents divorce and then remarry other people and she had to recover from vocal cord surgery, Lauren has had a lot to write about. And as her new material has shown, she isn’t holding back.

After debuting a new song devoted to her father’s battle with substance abuse and another song in which she frankly discussed some of the family issues she has endured, Lauren introduced a new tune last night at a Song Suffragettes event about the pressure young women who want to make it in the music industry face. The title is not known, but judging from the number of times a certain phrase is repeated, it could be “Sex Sells.” Check the song out here:

Lauren also debuted a more upbeat, happy-go-lucky tune about everybody getting along, called “My Kind Of People,” which she cowrote with busbee and Emily Weisband:

Lauren also recently performed at the WJVC-sponsored Girls With Guitars 2 event, where she played the aforementioned “I’m Doing Fine,” a song she cowrote with busbee and Emily Shackelton.

Last but not least Lauren broke out a cover of the Jessie J/Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj smash “Bang Bang,” including the Nicki Minaj rap!

Check out a recently updated list of the cowrites Lauren has accumulated (there are a lot!) here.

What do you think of Lauren’s new tunes, and do you see her frankness as an asset or a possible hindrance in the current country landscape?
