Lady Gaga Sets The Record Straight, Calls Out Disloyal Employees

Lady Gaga posted a message on her fan board, explaining to her Little Monsters why the music video for her single “Do What U Want” isn’t out yet. In an earlier post, responding to fan who was venting frustration at how her record label and media were treating her, Gaga responded with a post defending her label, Interscope, and hinting that employees from her inner circle had betrayed her. Gaga fired her manager, Troy Carter, right before ARTPOP was released. There were some press reports that originated from an article that claimed Interscope had lost millions of dollars on her record, resulting in layoffs at the label. ARTPOP sold 258,000 copies, well below past releases.

…in fact it is much more than the media, the media has also supported me in the past. there are always ups and downs. my heart breaks from the people i have trusted and loved who i’ve worked so closely with, who have used me, lied to me, worked me into the ground for the personal gain. when i woke up in the hospital after my surgery there were many people that were not there. my health did not matter. i did not matter unless i could perform. this is a very hard lesson. I have lost love ones to the greed of money. it is not interscope. They in fact love me very much and will see ARTPOP to the end.

Gaga angrily explains why her DWUW video has been delayed. She claims that she was only given a week–not enough time to plan and execute the video. And again, she blames greedy employees whom she feels have betrayed her:

It is late because, just like with the Applause video unfortunately, I was given a week to plan and execute it. It is very devastating for someone like me, I devote every moment of my life to creating fantasies for you. All my my most successful videos were planned over a period of time when I was rested and my creativity was honored. Those who have betrayed me gravely mismanaged my time and health and left me on my own to damage control any problems that ensued as a result. Millions of dollars are not enough for some people. They want billions. Then they need trillions. I was not enough for some people. They wanted more. I am very grateful to the photographers and designers who have always stood by me to make sure my fans are never aware of the things that happen behind the scenes, but unfortunately after my surgery I was too sick, too tired, and too sad to control the damage on my own. My label was not aware that this was going on. The next few months of ARTPOP will truly be its beginning. Because those who did not care about ARTPOP’s success are now gone, and the dreams I have been planning can now come to fruition. Please forgive me that I did not foresee this coming, I never thought after all the years of hard work that those I called friends and partners would ever care so little at a time I needed them the most. Give me a chance to show you the meaning of seeing art all around you. Open your hearts to me again that I may show you the joy of us coming together through our talents, that we are stronger as a unit than when we are alone. Let me be for you the Goddess that I know I truly am, let me show you the visions that have been in my mind for two years. I love you. Forgive me monsters. Forgive me ARTPOP. You are my whole world.

It sounds like she’s cleaned house and is ready to move forward.

You know who she sounds like? And it might seem inappropriate but I don’t mean she is like him in any way other than what this rant of hers sounds like, but she sounds a bit like Hitler. “My generals, they all betrayed me! I would have won the war against Russia if not for them! Now that I’ve gotten rid of them, I will achieve victory!!” See the similarity? Of course it wasn’t the Generals fault, it was Hitler’s- and I’m pretty sure it’s Gaga’s. Don’t take this the wrong way, I am not implying anything other than the speech of hers. A comparison any other way I realize is horrible.

  • Ronnie D

People are still trying to leech off her after all these years. Gaga is a fighter though, and her Art is her life. It’s her name on the Marquee, so she steers the ship, no one else. No different from being the head of a corporation. It’s pretty cut throat. What is sad, is that Artpop has been blown off by a lot of people, and it’s an amazing album.

  • Ronnie D

Well if she was that bad I doubt her manager, who she has had for years, would have stayed around this long.

  • Sassycatz

What a load of … drama … and somehow the planet keeps spinning.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Oh dear. It really never occurs to some celebrities that explaining you had to fire your inner circle doesn’t make you look smart and wise, does it?

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

This is a different manager from the Troy Carter she recently fired and implies is one of the traitors who stuck with her only from greed, I assume?

  • mjsbigblog

It makes her look like she wasn’t on the ball and is making excuses for her poor album sales.

  • mmb

Except in this case most of the inner circle people apparently weren’t fired but quit of their own accord. Beyond complaining about disloyal people, I don’t understand her train of thought here. Supposedly she has been working on this video for quite a while — so even if she was just given a week, she has now had a lot more than a week to do it. I think Gaga is very talented. But she does seem to be heading toward some sort of breakdown. But she will bounce back from this. The album isn’t a flop — its spawned two top ten hits, and now that xmas is over is back in the top 15. It isn’t selling as well as her last 2 albums, but it is selling fine. All artists have fall off at some point. I think that in general the public isn’t that interested in the Artpop concept, but so what. Its her vision as an artist.

  • esther macha

If she is steering the ship then who is it that is giving her only the one week for the video…I,m not trying to knock her , I,m just curious how stuff like that works in the music industry.

  • bridgette12

This woman is so full of herself and acts like she’s some type of mythical creature who’s being worshipped by lowly peons around the world. Then she wonders why friends and partners didn’t stand by her, maybe the reason is they were sick of being treated like they were beneath her. Gaga acts like she’s royalty and everyone around her should be bowing and scraping to keep her happy. Do she even know who she is anymore and when your start referring to yourself in the third person like Kanye West, you have moved into a another reality. I have never seen someone with such a overbloated ego who thinks she can’t do anything wrong. The woman needs to get a grip on reality.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Except in this case most of the inner circle people apparently weren’t fired but quit of their own accord.

Yikes. That’s even more dramatic! Since I hadn’t really followed her, I’d assumed all the stuff about betrayal meant she caught them and took action, not that she was caught flatfooted when staff decided they’d had enough of her and decamped.

The facts as you state them actually make her rant look even more like a precursor to a few weeks of enforced quiet in a walled facility in the countryside. Celebrities often seem to benefit from those, and they do usually bounce back.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Except in this case most of the inner circlse people apparently weren’t fired but quit of their own accord.”

That’s interesting. So the “loved ones” who “betrayed” her quit, and now she’s trashing them? Is “quitting” part of the betrayal that she is talking about (other than being greedy and exploitative)?

“I think Gaga is very talented. But she does seem to be heading toward some sort of breakdown. But she will bounce back from this.”

It appears that Gaga feels that she misjudged employees who she believed to be her confidants and friends. I don’t follow her at all, but are her fans (“monsters”) really her “whole world”? That sounds a little unbalanced to me.

  • bridgette12

I don’t think it’s the monsters who are her whole world, more like the millions of dollars generated from her monsters.

  • Pat H

She just needs to sit down and get over herself!

  • Pippygirl

    Wow, dramatic much?

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Gaga acts like she’s royalty and everyone around her should be bowing and scraping to keep her happy.”

Actually, she refers to herself as a “Goddess”, which is much more than just “royalty”. lol

I’m telling you the biggest problem is the songs. Her songs just kept getting worse and worse. I LOVED her first album The Fame and the deluxe edition w/ the new songs. Back then every single she had was great but now it’s like she’s lost it.

  • No Thanks

Gaga is a woman who has centered her world on maintaining her celebrity. Like the song goes, she lives for the applause.

She seems to expect everyone around her to cater to her every need to maintain this celebrity and thinks they should be thrilled to be a part of it. Didn’t that deposition from the former assistant that sued her say Gaga demanded 24/7 attention to her needs.

  • bridgette12

She sounds like one of those people who can’t stand to be by themselves and think that with the paycheck should come complete obedience and for them to take a oath of allegiance to her.

  • MrONegative

    This…was very Yeezus-esque. Shame.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that Kanye is still at the top of the “big ego” list, but it appears that Gaga is closing in fast. lol

  • Ronnie D

“The next few months of ARTPOP will truly be its beginning. Because those
who did not care about ARTPOP’s success are now gone, and the dreams I
have been planning can now come to fruition”

That sounds like steering the ship to me. She doesn’t control the time constraints the label might put on her.

  • Ronnie D

I guess others like Britney weren’t on the ball either since her album also tanked.

  • Porfivor Nixon

I agree- the problem with ARTPOP is not a “delayed video.” It’s the album itself, which is much like the problem of “Born This Way” – the last album. A few good songs, but too much “filler.” It’s a big drop in quality from THE FAME. She writes most of the songs so she has to be take responsibility. I mean, you can say a lot about Madonna, who she has patterned herself after, but TRUE BLUE and LIKE A PRAYER were great albums which were even better than the LIKE A VIRGIN album.

  • Bugme Nomor

“those who did not care about ARTPOP’s success are now gone”

This makes no sense as prior to that she was implying they were motivated solely by money. Success = Money.

Instead, I think she means those who did not care to bring her vision to fruition (i.e., give her more time and money).

What she seems to be saying here is…

“I’m sorry there were not more trappings around the album that would have swept you up into the world that I — as your Goddess — had created.”

Or, to read it another way, “I know songs alone aren’t enough to carry my albums.”

  • mjsbigblog

Why are you dragging Britney into this conversation? If Britney wasn’t on the ball either, it doesn’t change my point.

If you go by her words, she hired people who didn’t do their jobs, Bad mouthing them reflects badly on Gaga, not on the people who are no longer with her.

  • mjsbigblog

She doesn’t control the time constraints the label might put on her.

She just said her label loved her and wasn’t the problem, so…

  • Lin Brand

“the goddess that I am” ……..oh, please. Ego much?

  • taylor

“There were some press reports that originated from an article that claimed Interscope had lost millions of dollars on her record, resulting in layoffs at the label.”

The Examiner article was from that person who was using another woman’s picture as her bio pic. Billboard has already come out and stated that that article was fakeola and that it didn’t have a source for it’s “facts” or figures. Basically, Angela Cheng is a full time hater/nut case cray who makes things up and posts her articles on They are as reliable as the articles from that cray Kerry Idol nutjob. Although, at least Kerry is a real-life person. Angela Cheng is a completely made up persona. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

I never pay any attention to articles on It’s not a legit media site.

  • Miz

I didn’t like Gaga before, and this certainly doesn’t change my opinion of her. I tried to listen to a few songs from this latest album because I try to give people a chance to change my mind. I couldn’t get through any of them.

  • Ronnie D

I don’t think she is badmouthing them, she is just telling it like it is. She was in the hospital and some of her people were only interested in when she could get back to work, so they could get their paycheck. I brought Brit into this for comparison because from what I gather, Brit doesn’t have much control of things and her album tanked as well.

  • bridgette12

Everyone is your best buddy when things are going good, you don’t know who’s your real friends until you go through bad times. The thing about all of this, is that she might have thought these people were there out of love and loyalty, but what it comes down to, is the paycheck. They are not making the money she makes and they depend upon being able to work so they can make money. If things fell apart and some people dropped the ball, Gaga picked these people and she has to take her share of the responsibility for this mess.

  • Ronnie D

I do agree that she picked these people, and I also think she is learning a BIG lesson. I was just confused where some people were saying that she was coming off like Kanye West. I don’t get that at all from her.

  • bridgette12

Both Kanye and Gaga are so talented, but their talent has become secondary to their ego driven need to for attention. They suck the air out of the room when they enter and both need to be the center of the universe to whomever they meet. They think what they do or say is always right and don’t take kindly to anyone disagreeing. For them, nothing is more important than their art and when people criticize their art, they don’t handle it well. The public has gotten tired of their acts, both are so absorbed and when they speak in the third tense about themselves, it makes them seem so far out of touch with reality.

  • taylor

I don’t either, but an article from there was picked up by legitimate media sites and it was mentioned in the post above by MJ, so the information about the false article should be provided.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree, and I’m glad that the information about the phony article was posted. I’m amazed that the legit media picked up info from that site without researching it.

  • Aiken

Lady Gaga is done. I can not stand the woman. Its time to hang up the mic and join the circus.

  • taylor

No one knows for certain who these people are that betrayed her since her major surgery a few months ago. Speculations are that it was Troy and part of his team. Also, the rumors and speculations(including some media insider news) point to Gaga firing Troy, and not to him quitting. I’m not sure where the quitting rumor from above came from?

Troy and his team have been her manager and PR team since the beginning. A couple of them have been with her on promo opps and tours for over five years. They weren’t just “employees” to her. Gaga’s fans aren’t her whole world. She has a close family, long-term friends and a serious boyfriend of two years. She’s just hurt over the betrayals of a few people, who she considered to be so close they were “like family”. She’s having to learn that the majority of people are in it strictly for the money and could care less about anything else. She’s probably overly idealistic and naïve, and she is having to learn that 99% of the people in the music biz don’t care about the things that most the artists care about.

  • weareallinnocent

I agree Ronnie D. My first impression reading her screed was that, yep, you find out who cares and who doesn’t when you’re weak and in need. And, sometimes that’s pretty painful, particularly for entertainers like Gaga, who eat, sleep, breathe all day, every day with her “inner circle.” She seems to have believed they were real friends when they weren’t. BIG lesson indeed. And, sad to me.

  • Incipit

…the legit media picked up info from that site without researching it.

IMO, The ‘Legit Media’ is getting less and less legit. Next thing, they’ll be using stories from the monkeys at TMZ with no verification. Oh wait – I’m not sure they haven’t already, in their rush for 24/7 stories, profit margins and fresh meat.

Did they Pink Slip ALL their fact checkers?

  • weareallinnocent

I dislike the comparison for a number of reasons, but my first and foremost one probably isn’t the one you would think. Lady Gaga has seemed to be more solemn and sad recently to me, lacking her usual energy and spirit. And, Hitler committed suicide.

In the grand scheme, Gaga is really young. All of what she has done and experienced had to be a lot to take in during her early to mid-20s.

  • weareallinnocent

Apparently, facts have ceased to be relevant.

  • taylor

At least Billboard retracted their story after they realized that wasn’t a legitimate media source. (duh) Many legitimate news sites left the articles up with the fake information.
It’s getting to where you can’t trust anything you read now, no matter what the source is.

  • Incipit

Did they? I am glad to hear it – but sad to see they only caught on ‘after the fact’.

The news on the web is ‘Buyer Beware” for sure – I still have my Watergate Rule in place before I place any credence in a news item – – three separate reliable cites or a verifiable quote from the source.

Examiner is a fail on all counts. And it doesn’t help that there is a real newspaper or two out there with that name. What’s our defense against unscrupulous people who just go around making shit up – even, in some cases, the’ legit’ news sites? IDK.

  • jan

It’s sad that we (non-journalists) know that articles in the Examiner need to be fact-checked as they are created by amateurs – some with an axe to grind. You would think that someone who earns a living in journalism would know the same thing.
