Kris Allen appeared on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to perform his single “Live Like We’re Dying”.

Very nice job, Kris Allen and band! I’m looking forward to seeing them in Worcester December 7….

Thanks! I didn’t even know he was on tonight! Awesome job! He makes it look so easy! I tend to really love artists who can play intruments while singing…it adds an element of authenticity to them as an artist and to their performance. I love Kris because he’s just so real and mad talented to boot!

  • erinnthered

Much better sound than the crap feed I was watching.

Good for Kris! Bring that Kris Drizzle to SoCal…Lord knows we need it.

The only thing better than the performance was Slezak’s drunk tweets. Apparently it’s a trend now? You gonna jump on that bandwagon, mj, or will you leave Ausiello or TopIdol to do the next honors?

Also, Cale is still a very pretty man…must. stop. tarding…

ETA: Still not feeling this drummer.

  • jtoms

lol he’s so tiny, especially when standing next to conan.

the sound mixing on his mic seemed a little weird to me maybe, but kris himself sounded good. one of the better performances of the song i think, and that’s because i’m pretty sure they slowed it down. the band doesn’t sound too super comfortable together yet (the long-haired guy’s singing was off, the suited-guy was stiff), but i’m sure they’ll gel soon enough.

  • Ex-lurker

Geez, this sounds so different than what played on my TV. Way better.

Ha. No drunk tweets from me. Ever. It’s a long story. :) . But I may join them at the next karaoke night. :) .

  • cookcricket

hee, I thought there was a new thread since there are no new comments on headlines. :)

    Slezak, lol, he is hilarious!!!

  • http://MJO judes

Kris did a great job & looked terrific!! [ yeah maybe Cale's wardrobe attire is rubbing off on Kris!!]

I don’t live in the US so I don’t know much about this Conan guy but thought he could have spoken to Kris a bit more at the end .

The more the band perform together the better they’ll get. This I think was only their 2nd live perfomance together. Kris has done a lot of appearances with just himself & Cale!! I do agree that the lead guitarist does need to loosen up- maybe he hasn’t done much with a band before?

  • babybelle32

Kris looked and sounded amazing. I love that he and his band sound and act like a real band. I don’t know if they will all stay with Kris, but I hope they do, because they are incredible. As usual, Kris didn’t just let the focus be on him, and it was like each guy was a very important part of the performance.

I’m so excited about all of the stuff that’s coming up for Kris.

  • hoosiermama

Jumping over from the headlines thread….yeah, the sound is better here than on my tv, too. I liked it even more the second time around!

I also noticed that the drummer is wearing the Ed Harris shirt that was part of Conan’s comedy sketch earlier in the show. Now I’m wondering if he actually modeled it in the skit–anyone remember? LOL

  • erinnthered

Ha. No drunk tweets from me. Ever. It’s a long story. :) . But I may join them at the next karaoke night. :) .

    I WANT VIDEO!!

You don’t have to post it here, but OH MY GOD!! If you and Jim C or Slezak or Top Idol do a duet/ group I would KILL A PUPPY to see that!!eleven!!!!

Why did I have to move to West Coast!? Gah!

  • WeeklySpins

Interesting..the sound is better on here than it was on my TV. Sounds great! Can’t wait to see him play this dozens of times in the next couple of weeks on different shows. :P

I wonder what all he’ll play on GMA next week?

  • cookcricket

Okay, that was better the second time around, but still think it sped up as it went. Was this due to the lead guitarist or the drummer? IMO, Kris held his own! He looked great too! :)

Am I too critical or picky? LOL.

  • Eileen99

Didn’t Daughtry say he had trouble with the sound mix at one of these types of shows? I thought Kris sounded good – the sound was a little off for me, but nonetheless great. They’ll get tighter as they do more of these shows together – is this the second time the band has played a show? I think it is ..

Someone posted on headlines that she was at the show – afterward, they were giving away bottles of Reese’s perfume & movie DVD’s, but people were going back to ask if they had any of Kris’ CD’s. YAY!

Obligatory shallow comment: Leather looking mighty fine.

Not at all. The drummer was off beat for most of the song. I didn’t notice it speed up though.

  • MusicAlltheTime

It does sound better from this video than it did on my TV. But I still can’t hear Kris’s guitar.

    MJ, thanks for posting video!

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ adamaloha

    I like his jacket. :)

  • CathyMK

Kris looked and sounded great! And, boy, I always forget what nerves of steel he has. He just always seems happy and unfazed. Guess the Idol boot camp helps with the nerves!

Has anyone checked iTunes yet to see if the performance is giving LLWD a bump? The up to date feed and my computer don’t get along.

  • Mtlfan

yeah, like others i preferred it here than im my tv.
Very nice job Kris!!!!! nice outfit too
    what a wordy song

  • MusicAlltheTime

And, boy, I always forget what nerves of steel he has.

No kidding!! And he puts so much energy and passion into his performances.

  • CathyMK

    Can’t edit, darn it.

Anyway, LLWD is at #87 on my iTunes page right now, 1.5 hours after it aired on the East coast.

  • ilovekrisallen39

The one am looking at says his #34 on i-tunes.I don’t know where he was before on the chart. I was looking at the one for top charts.

  • Eileen99

LLWD has stayed pretty stable on the Pop iTunes chart. It dropped down overall after the CMA awards and Glee aired this week.

  • tinydance

I loved the performance. His voice sounded great. He looked good also.

  • CathyMK

The one am looking at says his #34 on i-tunes.

He’s at 34 on Pop. The 87 is for iTunes overall.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I always forget which one is which.

  • k0ka

    quite solid performance.

  • cookcricket

Not at all. The drummer was off beat for most of the song. I didn’t notice it speed up though.

Well maybe it was the drummer then. But to me it sounded like it sped up towards the end. IDK.

I do really believe Kris held his own for sure!

  • lifeisgood

    Looking and sounding great!

  • cookcricket

Yes, I’m curious myself where he was on itunes before tonight.

  • Sassycatz

Kris sounded very good, but like “Light On,” boy that song seems hard to sing and he’s got to sing it a lot. (Why do they torture their Idols this way?) Hard to have audience participation at concerts when the audience is racing to keep up. Ha!

It will be fun to watch the band evolve on the road. I think, on these major TV appearances, they have to keep to their marks. Even Joey — when he was with DC’s band — didn’t jump around as much on TV as when they were in concert.

Hey! Kris’ drummer left his drum set to shake Conan’s hand. Isn’t he afraid they’ll be stolen or something? Hee.

  • Truthiness

Has anyone checked iTunes yet to see if the performance is giving LLWD a bump? The up to date feed and my computer don’t get along.

Well I’m hoping for a bump, as I said in the headlines thread.

Okay the height diffential was as lulz as I expected, so thank @god that Conan came over to talk to Kris at the end of the song. Kris was behind a few times singing, but if that’s because of the drummer being off, okay, that would make sense.

Overall good performance by Kris and again, I would like to see some singles selling bump please :)

  • jammasta

I think I finally found something I didn’t like about Kris! I’ve been on Gossip Candy so much that his O face makes me feel really awkward and puts thoughts in my mind that kinda make me question my straightness. God damn, I hope a girl wins Season 9 to take my mind off that DX.

But yes, Kris is my man crush and he did so amazing. I keep forgetting how short he is, he looked like a kid next to Conan.

Go Kris! Also, I almost wanna buy that CD as a hard copy even though I already have it preordered. It looks so authentic.

    Singles selling bump plz, kthx.

  • mistyluv7

Puppy is cute but he still can’t sing……sorry! Wow the guy on the right (long black hair) is HOT!

  • didilynn

I thought he did a great job – lots of energy – I like the song more after seeing it performed tonight – and of course he’s adorable.

  • druzilla

The live arrangement almost eliminated the things I hate most about the album version. Pretty soon he’ll have it “perfected” live and, unfortunately, we’ll be saddled with the album cut.

Good to see Kris get this exposure. I’m not too sure about the backing vocals guy to his left though. His timing seeming off.

  • Starr

Kris always knocks songs out of the park when he performs live. The song sounded amazing, and I loved the little things Kris added to the song. I did think it was a shame that Cale was too far off to the side to get camera time, but as for Kris…damn, he looked amazing. That leather jacket was to die for. He sounded great! His voice is so much stronger than it was on the show. So proud of him!

And yes, him standing next to Conan brought the lulz indeed. hahahaha

  • amielee

it was an awesome performance…i â™ ¥ kris

  • 4Msrmyn

Starr-I agree with you. This performance really impressed me. Kris did a great job! This made me very happy!

  • Seeker

“The live arrangement almost eliminated the things I hate most about the album version. Pretty soon he’ll have it ‘perfected’ live.”

IA completely, Druzilla. I really enjoy this song when he does it live. I love the subtle changes in the song arrangement. The verses seemed more piano driven (Cale on the keyboard, YAY!) and I liked the electric guitar piece at the end. In the studio version, the beats and guitar sound overwhelming, you can hardly hear the piano – and it’s all together too loud.

This live performance was very good. Kris vocals, though seemed a bit effected at times, he still sounded really good. I think he went off tune for a sec at the “Looking at the hands of the time” after the bridge, but gained back control quickly. The band srsly needs to work on their vocal harmonizing.

But all together a SOLID Performance and all CREDIT goes to KRIS ALLEN. He makes this song work!

  • saga

I think Kris did a solid performance but the band felt a bit weak in the beginning before the guitarists came on board. I am also hesitant about the drummer, it feels like he can’t hold the band together (him and Cale felt a bit lost there). It was much better when the other guys joined in.

  • jmom376

I really enjoyed this performance and can’t wait to see how he grows over time once he has more experience. I just listened to his full album again (only the 2nd time) and will love it if he can also do some other songs on his future tv appearances. I really like LLWD and think it is a strong first single, but it’s not my favorite on his album.

I agree that Kris seemed very comfortable, but his band looked nervous and didn’t have the energy level that I saw on the Miami video’s. Might just be the environment they were in.

Overall, I think they did a good job.

  • Sarah Quipayco

He almost burst a vein did he? I was so afraid for him.

  • Kirsten

Great start to the promo appearances! I think Conan liked the guitar player (seemed to say something to him about his performance…or maybe he just liked the guitar). Nice to have him on TV again.

Kris Drizzle! (enjoying the appearances, but keeping expectations reasonable)

  • amiroamor

Puppy is cute but he still can’t sing’ ¦’ ¦sorry!

Really? I was gonna say “that was a reaaaally good vocal”

  • auntieaimee

Nice job. Tough song to sing! Yikes. Band hasn’t quite gelled yet, but they will as they perform together more. They didn’t show Cale much. Don’t Waste The Pretty(tm), folks!

  • sunchick

Hee, how adorable is Kris when he takes a big breath in between the wordy lines of the chorus? I just thought that was endearing. And the drummer is adorkable.

Other than that, meh, still don’t like the song. The performance lacked energy big time, but the song kinda stays at one level and doesn’t really build or go anywhere so it’s not really Kris’s fault. Plus the band members were sooo far apart that I wasn’t feelin any band chemistry, but that’s also the way it is on these TV gigs. I’m sure they’ll start to gel once they play more live gigs and are able to actually interact more.

  • borntorungirl

It’s amazing to me that Kris can get all the words of this song out. He sounded great! As much as I like the song I’m hoping his next single allows him to show off how beautiful his voice and his phrasing can be.

  • TwigLA

Kris and the band did great and Kris sounded awesome. Loved the highlights of guitar guy on left (it’s early) and Cale on keyboard.

The weak link is the drummer. His technique seems very sloppy to me and he looks sloppy. Thanks to the person who said the T-shirt was one used in a skit. It really stood out. Combine that with the blonde hair and my eyes kept being drawn to him. Not good.

I don’t understand the ‘wish I wasn’t on the west coast’ comments. The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien is taped at NBC studios in Burbank, CA.

Almost everyone looks ‘short’ next to Conan. He’s 6′ 4″ in his stocking feet. Kris always wears the flattest of flat sneakers. He, and many other famous performers, doesn’t seem to have a problem with his height. Neither do I.

  • jts323

    I thought Kris did great!!!

LOL at the height difference…Kris is so tiny…its so cute

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ Susan M.

Actually, TwigLA, Conan doesn’t tape at NBC like Jay did. His studio is on the Universal lot. Had tickets for last night and we got there a few minutes late (parking is obscure and you have to walk several blocks after that). We didn’t get in. Fail. So anyway, take em seriously when they say arrive at least two hours early. Not easy to do in Friday L.A. Traffic!

  • bluejeans

Aw, Kris did really good. You go, boy!

  • jersey

Aw, Susan M., that’s a shame that you didn’t get in after going down there! Thanks for recording this MJ. It’s on past my bedtime, LOL. Kris sounded great, looked great. I agree the band needs a little more time together. I think just standing a little closer to each other would help!

  • sunchick

The weak link is the drummer. His technique seems very sloppy to me and he looks sloppy.

Yeah, but he looks like Garth from Wayne’s World! So, that’s a plus. ;)

  • SarahP

woo hooo my kris fix for the day! and good job kris and the band!

very solid and good kris didnt fumble on any of the multimillion words in the song. and it looked like frodo and a tall person standing there heh. kris was cute as a button!

and awww how sad that they didnt focus on cale until the very end and that for a two second shot! and i’m having mixed feelings about the drummer. i think he looked better here in the red tshirt. and still not feeling the lead guitarist! cant he rock out a bit and not be like a stage pole all the time?

agree with kirsten that while enjoying the shows kris is putting out, not having sky high expectations

  • TwigLA

Actually, TwigLA, Conan doesn’t tape at NBC like Jay did. His studio is on the Universal lot.

Oh, thanks, SusanM! I didn’t realize they moved to Universal Studios. That sort of explains why some friends aren’t working on it. I should pay more attention. :)

That’s a shame you were too late to get in. LA traffic is the worst.

AHAHAHAHA!!!! That is exactly what I was thinking but I couldn’t remember the name(s). Maybe that’s why he was hired? If so, I’m loving Kris’ sense of humor and eclectic tastes even more. :::grin:::

  • gingerly

Maybe that’s why he was hired? If so, I’m loving Kris’ sense of humor and eclectic tastes even more. :::grin:::

Hopefully the drummer was hired for his ability to play drums, but that remains to be seen. I guess it being their first televised performance that nerves could have something to do with that…hope so.

I thought Kris did great! And whoever said the harmonies pretty much sucked was right, although it could be sound issues and not voice issues. Well, we will have many chances to see these boys perform this song in the coming weeks. I’m sure the few issues will get worked out over time.

  • schufly

It pains me to listen to a song that seems like such a struggle for the artist to sing. LLWD is just not friendly that way. Kris did an admirable job and looked great, but this song is not doing him any favors. Seems like singing should be fun and easy, by LLWD is so fast and has so many words, and just yuck. But kudos to Kris for continuing to shine in these live performances.

  • BootStar

I fell asleep last night, so thanks for posting this, mj!

I thought Kris looked and sounded great here, considering this was their first big performance on television as a band. But that bass player bears too close a resemblance to Constantine for my comfort level, LOL! And damn, Conan is a giant with a humongous head!

  • tripp_ncwy

Before we burn the drummer, here is some information about the members of Kris’s Band.

    Cale Mills – vocals/guitar/keyboards
We know he is a friend of Kris’s and auditioned with him in Louisville for AI8. He and another friend formed a local band in Little Rock called Latture. He also perfomed with Kris in a lot local gigs prior to idol.

    Chris Torres – vocals/bass
He was a solo artist and released an album in 2006. He has performed warm up shows artists such as Tim Reynolds, Buddy Miles, Jon Foreman, Donavan Frankereiter and Jack Johnson.

    Andrew Deroberts – vocals/lead guitar
He performed/toured with artists such as Sharon Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Camile Velasco, Jasmine Trias, Jordan Pruitt, Demi Lovato, David Archuleta, Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Anne Go, Stevie Wonder, Monet Monico, Jeremiah, Emanuela Bellezza.

    Ryland Steen – vocals/drums (a.k.a. “The Rabbit”)
He was the drummer for the punk band, Reel Big Fish. He has toured and/or recorded with artists such as Maroon 5, The Elected, Phantom Planet, Suburban Legends, Audiovent, Mt. Egypt, TEA, and Orange County cult legends Square. His father is guitarist Dave Steen a former member of the ’80s power pop band The Hawks, who charted with the songs written by Dave Steen, “It’s All Right, It’s OK” and “Right Away”.

  • Nina1

Am way out of touch with Idolworld, but caught Chris last night on Conan. Was a little disappointed; I like Chris with more instrumentally pared music. I am not the demographic Chris is targeting, however, so doubt I am in any way representative of other viewers.

  • MusicAlltheTime

Kris Drizzle! (enjoying the appearances, but keeping expectations reasonable)

Yep. I’ve got my rainboots on.

  • ladymadonna

Very nice performance by Kris and the band. It has to feel good to get the first big TV promo under your belt. I agree that the drummer was a bit sloppy, but they’ll tighten up as a band soon enough. I was out last night and didn’t get a pre-show benchmark at iTunes. Does anyone know if LLWD or the pre-order have seen a bounce?

  • Tess

Low key is definitely Kris’ modus operandi, if I wasn’t sleepy before the performance I was definitely sleepy after. Besides I really have a difficult time watching Kris’ face when he performs…it is so comical, and definitely not in a good way.

Kris (and his band) really have a long way to go before they are in any way cohesive as a unit. Their energy level was really low…Cale was so busy trying not to upstage Kris that he became a total non-entity. Yes the song is wordy but if Kris is the pro he wants to be, he should be grabbing it by the words and running with it. He has already dissed himself from one “wordy” song and he is fast destroying this one too.

I like Kris (as a person) but his singing is leaving me very cold…and his performance skills are becoming more and more suspect, for me, as time goes by. I just don’t see him becoming a “big” performance draw….I can go to my local casino and see bands with a lot more energy and charisma.

  • CRB

Wow, what a mess. If I were Kris I’d be majorly pissed at the label for having that cover song, clearly a studio special, as my first single. That was actually worse than I anticipated.

  • SarahP

thanks tripp_ncwy for the info on C.R.A.C.K

so we got chris, on bass, whose worked with jack johnson, jon foreman and buddy miles (i googled buddy miles and apparently he was in jimmy hendrix’s band)

we got andrew, the lead guitarist whose worked with stevie wonder (and archie and demi lovato)

we got ryland, the drummer, who was in a punk band and worked with maroon5.

    seems like an accomplished lot

  • merrymary

Awe….I missed it last night! Thanks for posting the video MJ. Kris sounded and looked great.

  • Valentin432

I like the song, but it seems such a struggle for him to sing it live that it loses a little bit of the fun. I’m willing to cut the band some slack since they are performing only for a few weeks together but I doubt Kris would ever be able to make it look effortless.

  • PattyH

Excellent! Kris and band did a great job! I like the band and think their voices sounded nice as his back up. One thing about an Idol is you know you’re going to be wachcing someone who can sing live! Kudos for Kris!

  • mzbet

I dvr’d the show last night because I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay awake. Watched it this morning and it stopped recording before the end of the song! Waaahhh! Happy to see the whole thing here. Kris and the band sounded terrific! It was nice to see them together again and I know they will just get better and better.

  • Eileen99

I’m ready for the Kris Drizzle! Sorta rhythms with his gangsta name, K-Sizzle.

  • Mtlfan

it’s a good performance but i must confess that at this point it seems to me that the studio recording is much ‘shiny’ than any live performance i heard of it. I wish he would perform BWCU, CSA or WAOMF in the up coming live performances because the brilliance of his voice shines more on it.

  • Mtlfan

yessss me too I’m ready for the Kris Drizzle :)

  • cookcricket

I believe as the band gels it will get better and better live.

‘ ¦Cale was so busy trying not to upstage Kris that he became a total non-entity.

I don’t get this comment at all because even when just the two of them have played together acoustically Cale has never upstaged Kris for me.

Kris’s singing always warms my heart!!!!! ;)

  • koshka

I know many of you think Kris is HOT….thats great! That leaves Cale for me. :)

The back up singer… ugh. They do need to tighten up the performance..but it must be a b*tch to perform live. They’ll get it.

Cale seemed rather non-entity to me too, only in that he never seemed to look up or have a smile on his face or maybe the camera missed it.

  • colette

    hey, to each their own.

I think this is great! The song just gets to you, wonderfully chant-like.

The band is decent, and the most important thing for this song is the drummer, who is rock solid.

But Kris is so impressive! He has that tough lyric down, and it’s such a swell hook. If he plays the single on most of his imminent TV spots, I can’t imagine it won’t boost sales considerably. To my ears, it’s a win.

Album is #13 in rock on amazon.com now. Slow & steady makes the race.

Though you can’t help but giggle when Conan, who is extremely tall, stands next to Kris, who really does barely come up to his pocket! Cute.

  • holeighannie

Kris did a great job! I have really been loving this song lately and as some other posters said, the live version really brings out the awesome aspects of it. He and Cale work so well together, I don’t sense any overshadowing in any way.

    I can’t wait til Tuesday!!

  • AnninSD

Oh my gawd…at the end when Conan shakes his hand – I keep forgetting how short Kris is – I know Conan is very tall but it just looks awkward.

The performance was good – I think he is sounding a little hoarse and is pushing through the higher notes a bit – but overall a ‘B’.

I like the look of Kris with the band, very cool.

  • FifthHouseSun

Saleswise, especially as the holidays approach, the most important audience for a TV appearance are people who liked Kris on Idol, hadn’t thought much about him since, be happily curious to watch, then like what they hear, and put his album on their gift list. Either for themselves, or to give to someone with whom they watched and enjoyed Idol.

We who already love Kris, saleswise, don’t matter. We’re buying whatever we’re buying anyway.

So playing back this morning, tried to watch from that mindset. First off, from guitar note one, people are going to be surprised it is so country twangy. Further, IMHO, this song doesn’t offer a good connect back to the cute heartthrob guy with the sly smile and heartfelt voice people loved on Idol.

It is not an inviting song. There is no invitation to emotionally connect with Kris or his feelings through it. Which is something people liked on Idol. Upbeat is good, but there has to be an open door. This song is, lyrically, a lecture. If it had been written on the same subject matter with an “I”, like “I, the singer” finally realized this, instead of all “you”, while still not a charmer of a song, it would at least have a place of connection with the singer.

And really not serving Kris’s potentially huge appeal was that all of the close-ups had him with his eyes closed and face scrunched. Except, alas, when he looked up to the plane falling out of the sky. He’s got to work on audience eye contact and camera engagement. We’re talking about luring in a casual fan, not those of us who already like him and have seen 52 tour videos looking for the cutest piano bench dancing.

The “Dylan-y” part that Slezak tweeted “You never know a good thing til it’s gone…” was well done. The rest of LLWD has in-built choppiness. Chunk-a-phrase after chunk-a-phrase. When people loved Kris’s smooth, full of feeling renditions on Idol.

Wish he’d chosen a different debut single. IMHO, and spoken as a Kris Allen fan who wants him to have a long and happy career, LLWD doesn’t introduce him invitingly to the world, doesn’t showcase his charm and abilities, and doesn’t capitalize on his built-in advantage of being pre-sold to millions of viewers.

  • girlygirl

    Tess

Huh? Kris was the only one performing the hell out of the song last night. His lead guitarist stood there like a stick, his drummer was off beat most of the song and his bass player was off key singing background vocals. They didn’t show Cale much, but I don’t get how you could say he was trying not to upstage Kris — Cale is good looking but is another one who seems to just stand there when performing. Based off what I’ve seen of him, I doubt he could upstage Kris if he tried.

KRIS is the one with the energy. The boy bops around the stage and throws himself into all his songs. Obviously last night he couldn’t jump around all over the place — it’s a very small performance stage and he has to stay on his marks for the cameras.

It was only their second performance as a band. I don’t know how much they’ve been rehearsing, but their performance at the tailgate show was much better and tighter. Maybe they were nervous being on national tv? Except for Kris, who doesn’t seem rattled by anything. He was fine — more than fine. The band more work. The 3 guys who aren’t the Arkansas friends (Andrew, Ryland, Chris) have a lot of interesting credits on their resumes, so the band has the potential to be good once they get more comfortable playing together.

LLWD has moved up 6 spots on the iTunes chart from last night. So it got a small bump (I assume from Kris being on Conan).

  • amiroamor

Who’s Cale? The guy in blue? He’s alright, not as cute as Kris. JMHO. LOL

  • girlygirl

Also, the music video for LLWD has proven to be very popular. It has a “thumbs up” rating of 83% on the vh1.com website and has already been viewed about 25,000 times. MTV and VH1 have both put it into rotation starting Monday and Kris is going to be co-hosting VH1′s Top 20 countdown next week.

LOL :) I like my men dark and tall… just ask my italian husband. Actually he resembles Cale a bit. Hmmmm I this might mess me up mentally for a while.

I noticed Kris didn’t sing “ticking” in the “clock that’s ticking” part of the lyric, and also left off “to say” from “chance to say”. It seemed to be consistent, so I guess it was planned. Maybe to catch a breath? It makes some of the lines not rhyme though (thinking-ticking, away-say).

I have a hard time watching artists I like perform on shows like SNL or Conan or Letterman. Most of the time the sound doesn’t translate well through the television, unless you have top of the line equipment. This year on AI many guest performers sounded “off”. When David Archuletta’s lovely vocals can sound off-key, you know something is wrong.

I’ve seen LLWD performed by Kris before and he did a terrific job. The performance last night was good, but he’s performed it better. He seemed to be pushing it a bit vocally which was odd to me because although it’s a wordy song, he does that well. I know there was a soundcheck done, but I think it was off — drums louder than keyboard/guitars at times … I’d have to watch it again.

Kris seems pretty low-key, except when he performs, but perhaps there were some nerves at play. Daughtry got nervous performing SURPRISE on AI, saying he felt breathless when performing it. David Cook said he nearly threw-up before the SNL gig. Normal human reaction, no matter how seasoned a performer.

The exposure was terrific and the performance of the song was good. It’s only us AI Fanatics that will nit-pick the ones we claim to love/hate. Whatever the side of the coin you’re on…

Kris is “working it out” as Randy Jackson would say. He’s doing it and doing it well.

  • SarahP

saw an old episode of conan’s today with jason mraz performing. jason did not make much eye contact with the audience or the camera but for casual fans like me, i liked his perfomance cos it came across as natural and it was fun watching him. to me kris’s performance in conan is also something like that. it was fun, he did a great job singing the multimillion word song and he was very natural.

casual viewers who dont like this type of music, would not have appreciated this performance and and those who do like such type of music, will like it. its as simple as that. i doubt that casual viewers will be looking at performer’s every facial expression and check if they are looking at the camera right. they will listen to the song and decide to like it/not like it.

  • SarahP

and i also think poor cale was placed in an obscure corner and the cameraman probably didnt have a good angle on him, and hence he was overshadowed…sad cos they deprived us from admiring his cuteness.

  • Muzic2luv

Missed it (away at 2012), but enjoyed listening to Kris Allen CD which arrived at my front door yesterday evening, complete with a signed lithograph. The lithograph is on heavy stock and arrived in a stiff curl from the tube. Back to Kris’ performance – I think he did great! Yeah, Conan (6’4″) towers over alot of his guests. The band appeared a bit stiff, but my eyes were glued on Kris. And I love that popping vein on his neck… that boy is so damn sexy! LOVE the LLWD music video and supporting all this year’s Idol 8! Just discovered MJ’s site this year and always look forward to reading others’ take on things. Now off the read Slezak’s drunk twats (check out Jambajim too)!

He seemed to be pushing it a bit vocally which was odd to me because although it’s a wordy song, he does that well.

evanjane, IA with this. This is why I was thinking it was too fast. Probably nerves and at first I thought it was Kris, but I think either the drummer or lead guitarist (I’m thinking more the drummer) was pushing/ or not playing well or something and that’s why Kris seemed to rush through (to me). This is also why I’ve said several times that Kris held his own because I don’t think it was on him.

I also couldn’t agree more that I’ve seen Kris do this wordy song live quite well.

Koshka, IA that it would have been nice to see more of Cale, but for me it would not have upstaged Kris.

  • CathyMK

Kris seemed energetic enough to me, but then I don’t need to have singers chewing up scenery and jumping off the stage, for me to enjoy them. People here on MJs have also called virtually every TV performance of David Cook’s in the last year “low energy”, and that doesn’t seem to have hurt his sales much, so I’m not going to worry about people’s perception of Kris.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the band was really nervous. I’ve seen lots of debut artists who were really, really nervous during their first round of TV promo. I thought Adele was going to crumble into bits right there on the stage when she was on SNL, she was so nervous. That very nervous performance is also the one that boosted her sales and got her noticed, so people are definitely able to look past a performer’s nerves.

ETA: I’m seeing LLWD at #79 now. Did anyone watch the VH1 Top 20 Countdown yet? Did they show LLWD?

    O yeah, forgot to say.

When the Tonight Show people were lining up to distribute the 3 DVD’s and perfume boxes, so many people were coming back asking if they have the CD (Kris’) or not.

Brought this over from yesterday’s headlines thread. Encouraging!!

Album is #13 in rock on amazon.com now. Slow & steady makes the race.

You know, the iTunes album moved up as well. Kind of amazing that it’s the album numbers that are getting the real bump. Not nearly as much as it could (should?) have been, but a definite bump.

Who’s Cale? The guy in blue? He’s alright, not as cute as Kris. JMHO. LOL

The other guy in the leather jacket – behind the keyboard. He co-wrote Is It Over, and accompanies Kris at the acoustic gigs.

Kris’s Video did premier this morning on VH1 Top Twenty. I decided to give it a try and I hit it just right. I seem to be lucky hearing Kris on the radio, but with 101.3 (top 40) and 96.5 (HAC) playing it a lot and now with MTVH Playlist having it on their rotation and VH1 lining up to play the video, I’ve been inudated with Kris Allen. That’s terrific in my book!

96.5 in CT has mucho love for the IDOLS. I think they are one of the top US stations that spin Kris’s song weekly. Grassroots promotion at it’s best.

evanjane: You’re one lucky gal – sounds like you’re right in the middle of the Kris Drizzle. OK, I admit I just love saying Kris Drizzle. Maybe it’s cuz I’m from Seattle.

I’m going to have to tune into VH1 and look for Kris. I just love the MV – it’s so well made. Love the piano shots in it.

Glad to see LLWD’s got some movement going again up iTunes.

KRIS is the one with the energy. The boy bops around the stage and throws himself into all his songs.

I thought Kris had energy, but the rest of his band seemed to be standing around, and that drained energy. Hopefully the band members will figure out how to feed off each other more or something. It probably takes a while for the chemistry of a band to gel, and they were probably pretty nervous doing their first big performance together. I liked what people are calling the Dylan-esque part of the song the best. That sounded the most heartfelt, and that is where I think Kris shines.

    @ Susan M”
Actually, TwigLA, Conan doesn’t tape at NBC like Jay did. His studio is
on the Universal lot. Had tickets for last night and we got there a few
minutes late (parking is obscure and you have to walk several blocks
after that). We didn’t get in. Fail. So anyway, take em seriously when
they say arrive at least two hours early. Not easy to do in Friday L.A.
    Traffic!

I’m sorry to hear that you missed the live show. I E-mailed Conan about 2 weeks ago after reading that Kris would be there on the 13th. Only got the confirmation ticket yesterday at 11:00AM. Boy, these TV people must think that we have nothing to do but check our E-mail and be able to drop everything right there and then. Good thing I had a day off yesterday. I got there by 2:45 pm and soon enough, there were so many people behind me.

I’m hoping that he will go to Jimmy Kimmel Live eventually. I saw Snow Patrol last year and they sang 2 songs that was televised and then they sang 3 more songs including “Chasing Cars” and “Chocolate”. It was so awesome. And note: if you go, just ask for the tickets for the concert only, so that you can be really close to the stage. The people that opted for the show audience, will be at the back just because J. Kimmel brought them out later for the concert from inside. And for Kimmel, they let you in around 7:00pm and yes you have to line up at least 2 hours earlier to get close to the stage.

I want to trim the drummer’s bangs.

  • Ratna12

Kris sang great yesterday in my opinion. Of course I prefer him to sing Let It Rain, or The Truth, or Before We Come Undone but he has to sell his single right now, so I guess we are stuck with that song ( and I love LLWD).

I think that the band ( maybe Kris) too, was a little nervous . I WAS nervous for him watching it. The show was filmed in real time, so that you can just hear the stage manager counting down from a supposed commercial time. So, the whole show was filmed exactly in one hour.

Anyway, watching it live, the drum was really loud, but you can hear Kris clearly, but not the guitar part, but I was thinking that maybe on television, it will be different. I guess not.

If anybody heard LLWD on the radio, could you please post. I got tired switching channels without any results. And don’t even mention stupid Ryan’s radio station. Seriously, how many times can people listen to Taylor Swift in one day anyway. Don’t they know that they can expand their listeners base if they put different songs in the station ?

  • hoosiermama

Anyway, watching it live, the drum was really loud, but you can hear Kris clearly, but not the guitar part, but I was thinking that maybe on television, it will be different. I guess not.

So then, it wasn’t just my tv? I hope they fix that mix when they do the promos next week. That guitar solo should be louder, and I also would like to hear Kris’ guitar strumming as well. Odd that these issues weren’t worked out during the sound check.

I saw the VH1 video premeire this morning–so cool! Two Kris sightings in 24 hours–yeah! But, I would like more Kris Drizzle here in northern Indiana. We get plenty of lake effect snow from Chicago, why not our radio stations playing LLWD like their stations are? Please!!

  • suebrody

I like the song, but it seems such a struggle for him to sing it live that it loses a little bit of the fun. I’m willing to cut the band some slack since they are performing only for a few weeks together but I doubt Kris would ever be able to make it look effortless.

Yeah, me, too. I felt that way at the Dolphins Tail Gate Party videos, too. I think it’s a VERY hard song to sing. It sounds better in the studio recording. I didn’t feel the band, either, but it’s only their second gig, right? I also like Acoustic!Kris better than Rocker!Cook, tho Cook’s roots are rock, and Kris’s are not. Good on the CD questions, however. Perfume boxes? lol

Yes on Kris’s strumming, BTW. Barely heard it. Wanted to.

  • http://MJO judes

Having thought about this performance more I’ve come to the conclusion [ being a musician who's been in a band myself] that because they were so spread out as a band – maybe the “foldback” speakers were not placed in the right places & so this would mean the drummer was not getting the right sound – or if they had earpieces – they were not working properly & were getting feedback!!

At the Tailgate performance I don’t recall there being any time issues – so I’m going to cut them some slack & say doing a “Live” performance on TV is difficult if what they are hearing is not correct!!
So often these days performers aren’t totally live [ like Brittany in Australia at the moment who is being slaughtered for lip sinking] – so I give them kudos for performing live & doing a commendable job in the circumstances!!

  • erinnthered

  • Starr

I thought the band did a good job, but Kris was clearly the only one who was holding his own. Vocally he did stretch himself on that song, which is funny, considering how wordy that song is and a challenge to sing live. My disappointment was in the band’s backing vocals. They are supposed to pick up where Kris leaves off so he doesn’t have to say “ticking”, instead they leave it off right where Kris stops and as a result you get this disconnect. Also, towards the end at the chorus after the bridge, Kris is supposed to sing outside of the chorus and the band sings the regular chorus – and Kris did attempt to sing outside of it, but when he heard the band not backing him up, he sung it himself. That was what pissed me off, is the band does not seem to have their shit together yet. Cale and Kris as a duo harmonize really well and that was evident at the Vineyard gig. They were perfectly timed, they knew each other’s cues. They need to work on their timing and to make sure they back Kris up, because if this is the way they will be performing, I’d much rather see Kris solo. And Cale can come too :D

  • progression

Whew! Those first couple promo appearances are nerve wracking for the artists and the fans.

Kris is as cute as a button, but he sounded like he was straining vocally to me the entire song. Also, LLWD is pretty repetitive, and they’re going to need to work on how they perform it to keep the audience engaged. I remember last year when Cook was rolling out with LO, and had a lot of challenges singing the song live. It takes a while to work with a song and tweak it for a live performance, I’m sure Kris will be doing the same over time.

The band really needs some work IMO. It’s got to be difficult to start from scratch and to have to begin performing on national television within weeks, and I’m sure they’ll get tighter and develop their stage presence as they get more time together under their belts, but not loving the band at this point at all.

  • ross

Because Ed Hardy = Massive Tool. That’s it. He’s out. Second time he couldn’t keep time, and Ed Hardy is worth at least another two strikes. New drummer please!

I have no idea why you say the drummer, Ryland, is bad, or that he couldn’t keep time. I just watched this again and he and the band sounded fine to me.

I watched this last night and thought it was a good performance of the song. After reading some posts here I just watched it again, because I thought maybe I missed something that was wrong with it. I still thought it was a tight, solid preformance of the song. So I guess you’ll have to count me as somebody who was satisfied and doesn’t really get the nitpicking.

  • http://MJO judes

I should add to my previous statement of the band maybe having “hearing” issues that also goes for the singing as well- maybe they couldn’t hear each others voices well & so the apparent “disconnect” happened!!
Its easy when you are standing right next to each other as Kris & Cale were at The Vineyard but as someone whose been in a band , I know that if you can’t hear the other singers well its really frustrating & you just have to “go with the flow “as this was a “truly Live ” performance. A lot of performers won’t do this – they will pre-record which is live at the time but they have the benefit of re-doing it if the sound isn’t right!! For this performance they had no choice but to keep going & do the best they could with what they had so I say – kudos to them!!

I for one would much rather see a band live with all the foibles that happen , than to have them obviously “lipsync” & not perform live which becomes very sterile!!

  • ross

Ryland Steen (drummer) is 29, and he’s had a lot of professional experience. I sincerely doubt he’s a bad drummer.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryland_Steen

A lot of young bands have personnel whose experience, prior to being in the band, is nil. But they seem to do okay. So this guy would presumably trump them.

I was wondering looking at the booklet…. Kris name comes first in the song credit. Does it have any meaning, like he’s the one who’s the main writer/composer?
I remember seeing one of his twit where he was saying that he just finish writing a song.

Ryland Steen (drummer) is 29, and he’s had a lot of professional experience. I sincerely doubt he’s a bad drummer.

Watch more bands. Professional means nothing. He was off both in Miami and here.

Finding a good drummer is difficult enough that it’s a running joke for most musicians. Good drummers usually know the best jokes, too. Just google “drummer jokes” and you’ll see what I mean.

I usually end up knowing the drummer in a band first. These are the good drummers in all but one exception. That’s a garage punk band, and eventually took over lead vocals (which he is awesome at), and they can all play multiple instruments, so they rotate during the shows.

  • sleepinin

I thought the guys did great on Conan, it’s such a weird thing to form a band and perform together once at a tailgate party then have a national (international really I guess) television debut for your second performance. So I have no complaints at all. They sounded good, and really I can only see them getting better from here on. Conan also looked impressed to me at the end. I may be reading into things but – hey I do that. :)

Ratna12: If anybody heard LLWD on the radio, could you please post.

Buffalo’s Kiss Fm has been playing it, they’ve also played Adam’s FYE and Kris’s Heartless/Gangsta’s Paradise Mash-up.

  • Seeker

Like I’d said earlier, it’s Kris who held his sh*t together and made the song work. The backup singing was BAD! They are suppose to harmonize with Kris’ vocal, but there were times I felt that Cale, Andrew etc were shouting esp at “You gotta stop” … “You only got” etc parts. It really stood out for me.

And where is all this “Cale was so busy trying not to upstage Kris” talk coming from? Cale upstage Kris!!!!??? Srsly, I know Cale is hot and all but Kris is way superior vocally & in stage presence.

All in all, it was a solid performance but the band needs some fine tuning. But, no problem, more gigs they do together, the better they’ll get.

  • evanjane

Looking over my post, I saw it needed editing. Inundated, inundated. Really needed to fix that. lol

Help please (Seeker?)–I have the rest of the song down pat (and LOVE it!). Thanks!

  • JudyL

All I really know about music is whether I enjoy listening to it and I very much enjoy Kris’ music. I also enjoyed the Conan performance.

With that said, Kris is just too much of a musician to not know if a drummer is good or not. So I am thinking if there really was something off with the drummer, there must have been a problem with something other than his ability. I guess the drummer could have been chosen by someone other than Kris but I was under the impression he chose his band.

If the drummer is really not capable, I hope he is replaced quickly. Hopefully they just need a few more gigs to get it right.

  • Mtlfan

hoosiermama, i found the following lyrics (don’t know if it’s accurate):

I’m a little pawn still in your game
    And you ignore my advances
I turn my head and I look away
But I can’t control my eyes are on you

Oh, you’re on the run and I’m chasing you
Feels like war with all your glances
    I’m just a boy without a clue
And I can’t control following you

But it’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me

I know you better than you know
You can fight but it’s not over
I say to stop but you start to go
    I guess that means it’s L-O-V-E

I say to look but you turn away
I say we put our best foot forward
Will you believe, come next to me
[ Kris Allen Lyrics are found on http://www.songlyrics.com ]
Oh, why can’t you see, I’m begging you, please

But it’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me

(Yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah)

And I’m knocking on your door
    Baby baby, please now
    Falling on your floor
    Baby baby, please
I keep knocking on your door
    Baby, baby, please now
    Falling on your floor
    Baby baby, please

But it’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me
    It’s alright, alright with me

Thanks,Mtlfan, for the lyrics. I was really off on that punk=pawn!!! LOL I also thought “glances” was blitzing. Guess I’ve watched too much football today! Ha!

Just checked itunes and LLWD is at #29pop/#66 top songs. Music video is #21/#40 and the album is#15/#76. So, it looks like the promo has given them all a little bump! Yeah!

  • happycat14

Kris and his band were good; I thought they had energy and sold the song. Maybe in future he’ll interact with his bandmates a little more, but he is a solo act, so they’re there to back him. He’s got so many TV gigs and radio Jingle things lined up, they’ll only get even better. Kris’s outfit was nice, the rest of the band perhaps could use a style makeover.

Does Kris have an extra large guitar, or is he just extra small? It seemed to overwhelm him.

WOW, how lucky. I assumed that is Buffalo, NY ?
I’m in Los Angeles and I’ve never heard Kris on radio, ever (w/ the exception when KISS FM Ryan interviewed Kris for that debut on Friday).
Awhile back somebody posted a map of radio station with LLWD spins and I did not see one from LA. Do they think Kris has no fans from LA ?

Yeah, I have the mashups from the Vineyard on MP3 and they are on repeats, including Let It Rain.

I hope the NY fans will come through with any Kris news and put it up.
I did not see any interview on my local TV at all here . E News, WTH ?
O yeah, forgot, the anchor is Ryan S. Never mind.

Thanks for the Conan video! Couldn’t stay awake after busy day at work and then early work on Sat.
Thought the band seemed tighter at the tailgate, too, but overall thought the Conan was fine. Noticed the grins from the band when Conan came over to shake their hands; must have been a thrill. Wish Kris had not closed his eyes so much during the song — maybe he was concentrating so hard on those lyrics! I feel sure they’ll all be more relaxed on the next television appearance. Yes, good on them for being LIVE.

that would be great! i don’t know this gig and check on wiki; they have artist performs on an acoustic format, can’t be more suited to KA.

But tonight i had a blast when i read that Buffalo’s Kiss Fm has been playing Kris’s Heartless/Gangsta’s Paradise Mash-u. That’s a good sign that they don’t keep to the single. I guess they might play others of his songs after the album release next week without waiting for an official 2nd single :)

(Hope you checked out the Live In the Vineyard link, I uploaded the MP3 u wanted.)

    Love this part!!! (Thanks, Mtlfan)
And I’m knocking on your door, Baby baby, please now
Falling on your floor, Baby baby, please

OK, who else is in love with the lyrics of “Is It Over”?
This song is my JAAAM!! I just keep going back to it. And I don’t even let the song finish, keep toggling back lines that I love, “your tears on my chest”, “Take ur time” , “My pride’s here to see that I won’t let you go as you walk out on me.” and the sexy litttle bridge!!!
(Wow lyrics to “Is it Over” at songlyrics.com, just so different from what I hear. What gives!!??)

The album sounds amazing on ipod! You need to listen with good headphones. Love the little nuances you can pick up here and there.

And I must confess, I blast “Heartless” Loud and dance like crazy to it. (though I do tune out the “Nobody betta than MeahAHahA” part ;P)

Ahhh the MASHUPS – Pure Gold!

    GO Kris – Go LLWD!!!!

Don’t really need to watch more bands. (How many more do you suggest?) That’s kind of condescending. In my opinion he wasn’t ‘off.’ Sorry if we disagree.

Several other people noticed that they were “off” last night, and a few people besides me also singled out the drummer. Somehow, because we didn’t look at his wiki page and figure out he’d played in other bands we must be wrong?

Drumming is an instrument just like any other. For some people they can play their whole life and only ever be mediocre. Others can pick up the same instrument and at 17 be the best in the world. Say…Keith Moon. Experience means nothing.

I don’t need to check a wiki page. I’ve seen enough live music to form my own opinion, and since other people seem share it too – on this blog and elsewhere – there may actually be some merit to it. Maybe instead of worrying about his CV you should figure out why so many seem to think this…or you could just enjoy the fact that you didn’t hear it, and not worry about the fact that people have other opinions.

Honestly, I think everyone should see more live music. That’s something I’ve been saying on this blog for years. How many bands? As many as you can see, and as often as you can for the rest of your life. Find what you like, and support it. Especially local bands. They need it.

There’s no such thing as not needing to see live music. It’s like saying you don’t need to read. Why stunt your cultural literacy on purpose?

I usually end up knowing the drummer in a band first. These are the good drummers in all but one exception. That’s a garage punk band, and eventually took over lead vocals (which he is awesome at), and they can all play multiple instruments, so they rotate during the shows.

What does this mean, I have no idea.

It’s called an anecdote. Should I be snarky and post a link to the definition? I was pointing out the musician’s tendency for drummer jokes (which you cut out in this quote), and I offered that for some odd reason I’d known a lot of drummers (why I knew about the drummer jokes), and only one was a “bad” one. I originally intended to link to that garage punk band, but since chachi isn’t around, I doubted anyone here would be interested. I forgot to delete the last part about the band.

Since I’m repeating all this, I’ll link anyway. Maybe chachi is out there lurking…

Ratna12: WOW, how lucky. I assumed that is Buffalo, NY ?
I’m in Los Angeles and I’ve never heard Kris on radio

Yes, Buffalo, NY. I’m in Canada actually and they haven’t played Kris on a local station here either that I know of. I’m close enough to pick up the Buffalo station – so I switched.. to hell with Canadian radio I say, you want my ears — play my song!! :)

and I think the Buffalo station only played the Heartless mashup once. I’ve only heard it once anyway, I don’t think they added it to the rotation or anything. BUT they did play it, talk about it, and link to it on their blog.

  • Starr

Wait a station played Kris’s mash-up of Heartless and Gangsta’s Paradise? Must be some hardcore Kris fans who either requested it or the DJs are super in the loop, because as far as I know this performance hasn’t really hit the radar yet, even online. Although it’s already got 6,000+ hits on Youtube.

  • erinnthered

Anyone else think Kris needs to go on BBC’s Radio 1 Live Lounge? He would totally melt people’s faces off on that gig. I’m really excited for AOL Sessions.

I’d rather have him on Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music. Never happen, but it would be cool. There’ve been some amazing performances on Radio 1 Live. I think it would be nice if Kris could just hold his own. He has a shot at it.

There are also some really good live radio shows in the states. KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, KGSR has some good live sets at various places all over Austin, and KBCO Studio C. Would be right up his alley to do any one of them. He would appeal to that crowd, but I’m not sure it’s the kind of thing Jive considers. Maybe someday.

I could’ve sworn Jordin Sparks did something at Radio 1 recently. Isn’t she with Jive? Yep, looked it up and Jordin did do a cover of Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold” on that show. It might not be so unlikely after all.

    Starr:

The DJs are super in the loop. :) Kris is playing at their Kissmas Bash. They talk about the Kissmas Bash every day, pretty much all morning. It’s a very BIG DEAL for the station.

They linked to the mashup on their blog
    http://www.kiss985.com/Janet–amp–Nick-in-the-Morning/1064235

so Kris is definitely on their radar.
But yeah, Conan. I enjoyed seeing Kris perform on tv again in non-grainy footage and I thought it was a good start to the publicity rounds.

and a big yes to anything that mentions live and radio in the same sentence.

  • Starr

@sleepinin: I’m glad he got some recognition for that performance. I seriously had chills when he performed the Falling Slowly/With Or Without You mash-up.

Part of me likes the Kris-Cale combo and I would love for them to just tour together sans bandzilla, but on the other hand this CD is all about big production and big sounds, so I doubt an all-acoustic set would be something they would want to make a staple at every performance. I think the Vineyard gig was an intimate setting, so it seemed practical to go all-acoustic. The tailgate gig was pretty good, though. I’m hoping they get plenty of time to practice and gel before Kris goes on all these Christmas gigs.

I meant the US radio shows aren’t on Jive’s radar. Live Lounge is totally possible if they decide to do international publicity.

Jordin is on her second album, and just now trying to appeal to an international audience. Kris isn’t really the kind of music they’re playing in the UK much right now, but with Eg White being involved they may try some real international promotions. Who knows.

My point was to say that BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge has had some great performers. I’m not sure Kris is quite face meltingly good just yet. On the other hand, I bet he could at least hold his own. He does do covers very well. Jordin’s cover wasn’t that great, IMHO.

Well I am not a Jordin fan at all, so I won’t even offer an opinion about her performance LOL I do think it would be a bit premature for Kris to do a performance there this early in his career. But yes, I feel like magic happens at BBC Radio 1. I can’t get over White Lies’ performance of “Love Lockdwn”, as well as Kasabian’s take on “Sweet Escape”.

I would love to hear Kris perform a stripped down version of “Is It Over”. That song rocks.

Re: the whole band performance thing @ross: the band was a bit off to me as well, but people will have different opinions about how they did. I think they did OK, and I’ve seen a lot of live bands. It all boils down to what your listening ear can let go. I didn’t mind the band being off because my focus was solely on Kris. I did notice the discrepancies in their harmonies, and that was what got my attention. Erin’s point (not to put words in your mouth, erin) was that people who have seen plenty of live bands can discern when one of the members is off. Some of these mixing issues or the drummer not being on time, whatever, do not translate to TV to someone who has not seen a lot of live bands perform. Don’t think that was meant to be condescending. :)

    Just keeping the peace.

And a little bit off topic, but I just read the liner notes for Kris’s CD and I noticed that Danny O’Donoghue of The Script did the backing vocals for “Written All Over My Face”. Actually, the entire band (the Script) did the instruments on that song, which I found really interesting.

No, but because you have opinion doesn’t mean everyone is going to agree with it, and I don’t. And just because you have your opinion and I have mine, it doesn’t mean you need to tell me what to do. ‘Watch more bands.’ ?

Yes. Watch. More. Bands. Can I be any clearer? You can take the advice, or you can leave it. Direct as it may be, it’s still just advice.

You stated that because he was a professional and had experience that he must be good. That’s not really an opinion so much as a logical fallacy.

You also stated that you didn’t hear a problem. That is an opinion. One that doesn’t invalidate our opinion.

We might hear a problem you don’t, but that doesn’t mean we’re wrong. It also doesn’t mean you can’t just enjoy the performance and ignore us.

Feel free to ignore us, and enjoy the song. How’s that?

ETA: Yes, that was a bitchy reply. I’m sorry for that, but seriously, “telling you what to do?” C’mon.

I loved that one! I really like Kasabian, too. They usually only do covers on Live Lounge, so unless someone else decides to do Is It Over, we’re out of luck.

Thanks for trying to keep the peace. Yes, that was the point of my statement. That, and to please support your local music scene, because it can’t be said enough. (You hear that a lot from me. Pretty much any time I get the chance. lol)

Okay, if I could pick any “music show,” international or otherwise, I would love to see Vincent Moon invite an Idol – any Idol contestant – to do a Takeaway Show. I’m sure he’d see it as a total sell out, and never do it, but who knows.

  • evanjane

erinthered — I have watched many artists and bands perform on these shows that for some reason have sound issues. Kris’s performance of Heartless/Gangstas in Paradise was perfection, the harmonies and vocals spot-on. I am and will always be hypercritical with my favorite bands/artists because I expect top-notch performances. I’ve been told the bass player is the key thread in holding a band’s performance together rhythmically, especially keeping a drummer in line. I recall after Allison’s performance on Conan that many called-out Aaron for being way off with his drumming as well.

The performance was good. It seems to be selling the pre-order CD as well as LLWD. It gave Kris good exposure. His cute self alone would have done the trick anyway. lol

Kris has proven over and over he does more than JUST hold his own. We all have differing opinions and I most wholeheartedly disagree with yours.

I’m not sure where you got that quote. It’s way out of context…maybe from the BBC Radio 1 discussion? You might want to reread those, because I was specifically comparing him to the many seasoned performers and bands that have created some pretty great musical moments on that show. He would do well just to hold his own. Some truly great acts have laid some smelly eggs on that show too. Trust Starr and me on this one.

Also, yes, the bass and drums are the “rhythm section” and therefore keep time in a song. Both are also the most commonly complained about members of a band, in my experience. Drummers more than bassists because when a drummer is off it seems more obvious, and can throw off the rest of the band easier. Regardless, Kris’ bass player may not be able to sing in harmony, but he can play in time.

ETA: I should clarify. It’s not just the time issue. He’s just not a very good drummer, IMHO. I’m hoping he’s just still learning the songs, but his choices seem very…I don’t know, cliche? basic? Something like that.

These shows are notorious for sound issues (SNL is the king of them all). There’s just not enough time for proper rehearsal, and the stages are not really designed for live music.

  • colette

OK, I totally respect that music hits people differently. But as someone who is fairly avid and educated listener, I just have to say this: I’m really mystified by the complaints about Kris’s band on Conan. Ryland, the drummer, is a seasoned pro who has been featured in Drummer magazine, and even has a couple of an clubs f’r cryin’ out loud. I know that doesn’t automatically mean he’s good. But that song needs a very strong rhythm pace for the singer, and the drums really propel it forward.

as for the rest of the musicians: a) I can’t believe Kris would have hired them if they weren’t good. the guy has great ears; b) they laid back enough to make sure his vocals were up-front — something that’s refreshing to me, after hearing a lot of lead vocalists drowned out by their fellow bandmates; and c) the song has a lot of words in, yes, it has a lot of intensity in the vocal, yes, and it has a very brief and fitting guitar solo, yes. So?

OK, onward. maybe the Kris’s next appearance will win more hearts….he’s already won mine…

I think I remember seeing Lady Gaga perform “Poker Face” on BBC Radio 1, so maybe they’ve changed the format? And I feel like everyone has been raving about the “Use Somebody” cover from Paramore, but it seems I am the only one who did not enjoy it. I liked Bat For Lashes’ version better, but that’s just me.

Yeah, compared to performers like Kasabian and The Kooks, Kris probably needs a bit more time to get to that same level. I still maintain that if he does one of these things someday that he should definitely bring Cale with him. I love their chemistry and I think out of the entire band Cale is the one who “gets” Kris’s timing. It goes with their friendship, I guess, and I believe they’ve performed together several times pre-Idol. Cale also co-wrote “Is It Over” – a song I think is very reminiscent of Kris’s work in Brand New Shoes, so Cale must know exactly what Kris wants to convey in these performances.

  • jersey

It appears that Kris did get a nice bump from either this performance, or, more likely, I think, VH1. His single was down to 89 or something on Friday, wasn’t it? It’s sitting as 66 on itunes right now. And the album was down in the low 100′s and is now up to 70. Don’t songs usually fall on the weekend?

I said earlier in this thread that I liked the performance. Watching it again, I still do. I thought it was enjoyable and it did it’s job. I don’t think most casual viewers nit pick the way internet fans tend to. I didn’t feel any of them “upstaged” Kris. Mostly because they didn’t really seem to focus on anyone but Kris with the camera. I don’t think you could hardly notice Cale (I looked, LOL).

  • LoveDaRocker

Very nice job. Sometimes I wonder how many of the haters posting here really hate or just sit in their pajamas enjoying reactions to their OTT posts.
In any case, Kris did a great job and he continues to prove why he is the S8 AI.

To the left toward the bottom there is a link that says “lyrics”, all of the songs are posted, but I’m not sure if they’re all 100% accurate. Finally caught the video premier of LLWD on VH1′s Top 20 Countdown this morning. It took a while to get there because that kept saying it was coming up but it not shown until right before the #2 video. The video looks so much better on a 50″ screen than on my laptop. It really drives home that Kris is the center of attention.

Conan was very good. I wish for the GMA concert they would bust out AlRight With Me. That would make a great closing sing along song for the crowd.

I’m surprised all this arguing is flying on this thread. I have no desire to argue. I don’t think you can draw the conclusion that, because I didn’t find the drumming to be poor, I don’t know enough about music. Or I haven’t seen enough music, or live music, or whatever conclusions are being drawn about me. You know absolutely nothing about me whatever. Your remakes are presumptuous. I don’t need to present my credentials to have an opinion.

No, Kirsten was quoting someone else, but I can’t remember who it was.

I like the phrase, though. It’s funny. It also reminds me of somebody’s video concept of Kris singing “Let It Rain,” in the rain, in a t-shirt that gets wetter and wetter as the song goes on. Can’t remember who thought that up either, but the image has definitely stuck with me. ;)

For me, Kris Drizzle > Adam Storm. And someone here had brought up how Kris Drizzle rhymes with K-Sizzle (CUTE!)

Oooooh, ‘Let It Rain’ + Kris in somewhat see through shirt from BritWeek Party… Shirt getting wetter & wetter, becoming translucent, then transparent….. then all the buttons magically fall off, so does the shirt…
Yeah, ‘Kris Drizzle’, it works now ;)

    Thanks, MusicAlltheTime for the image!
