BOSTON, April 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — AMERICAN IDOL winner Kris Allen will perform with the Berklee City Music All-Star Band May 2-4 in New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. The concert series, which is open to elementary and high school students, works to raise awareness of the importance and need for music education, particularly in urban areas where schools are reducing or eliminating music programs.

“Kris, Andy Davis and I, our host partners and the other 30+ City Music Network sites across the country are on a mission to not only highlight the importance and life-changing impact that a music education can have on today’s urban youth, but also to assure they get access to that education,” said J. Curtis Warner, Jr., Executive Director, Berklee City Music.

Allen will perform solo selections from his debut album and ensemble pieces with the All-Star Band to an audience of students who already benefit from or can benefit from the Berklee City Music program.

“To be associated with a leader in music education such as the Berklee City Music program is truly an honor. Music education is vital to any child’s development and is a cause that I hold close to my heart. The opportunities that the Berklee program provides to kids are remarkable and inspiring,” says Kris Allen.

Joining the ranks of legendary musician Quincy Jones and Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, Allen will serve as a Berklee City Music Network (BCMN) Ambassador to spread awareness of the program. As part of his role of Ambassador, Kris Allen will attend the Berklee City Music Completion Ceremony in Boston on May 1 and perform songs with the Berklee City Music All-Stars.

Allen has also partnered with Music Empowers Foundation (MEF) to provide the BCMN with a two-year $150,000 grant to fund research measuring the program’s impact and its continued expansion and development. “It is very gratifying to partner with Kris in support of an innovative program like Berklee City Music,” said Andy Davis, Founder of MEF. “Kris is an amazing advocate for music education and by doing these concerts we hope to raise awareness and attract funding for additional programs.”

MEF and Kris Allen will also fund five scholarships for high school students in the BCMN to attend Berklee City Music’s Five-Week Summer Program. Nearly $30,000 was raised for the scholarships by Allen’s fans during a fundraiser called “Alright with Music,” named after Allen’s single “Alright With Me.”

“A fundamental component to fulfilling our mission is in developing partnerships. We have worked with the Berklee City Music project since 2006 and they have played an integral role in developing the varied music opportunities we offer. As some of our students transition into being Berklee undergraduates we look forward to building deeper and longer lasting bonds,” added Paul J. Thompson, Principal, Urban Assembly School of Music and Art.

    This is pretty cool.

That’s great! My son actually attended the Berklee 5 week program 2 summers in a row. It’s a fantastic program for high schoolers interested on being immersed in a music program. It gives them a flavor for what it’s like to be a college student, a music major, and what it’s like to be on your own in “the big city”. It’s great that they’re giving scholarships to such a fantastic program so kids can attend who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

  • ilovekrisallen39

What a great thing to do. I love how the idols help out with charities, and other types of programs. That’s just so cool.

  • tripp_ncwy

Kris has a new title Berklee City Music Network Ambassador Kris Allen. :D :D

  • ross

It’s great whenever one of the idols can use their fame to do something for others – this always seemed to me a perfect fit for Kris, too.

Whenever I see kids walking around the Berklee neighborhood with their guitar cases, violin cases, etc., I think about how great it must be to be studying what you love. Music Empowers is giving more people opprtunities to do that.

  • Eileen99

This is awesome! Nice job Kris & Music Empowers for putting this together to help kids. It’s always nice when celebrities use their high profile to bring awareness to worthy causes they care about.

Also, I appreciate his management facilitating this & supporting Kris being involved with charities that focus on young people. Aside from the fact that Kris likes doing these types of things, it’s smart strategy to focus on building a young fan base that will stick with him throughout his career.

Too bad there aren’t more concert dates, but I’m sure these things are really hard to put together logistically.

  • hoosiermama

I really love when Kris performs with kids. He is so respectful and encouraging of them. He willingly takes a back seat to allow them to shine. These should be fun concerts!

    I’m a proud fan!

Thanks jersey for the info about the summer program. A five week immersion program does sound fantastic!

I’m going to try to get into that May 1 thingy at Berklee. It’s right down the street…so why not? ;)

  • Eileen99

@MusicEmpowers: A big thank you to @mjsbigblog for the great write up on Kris Allen/Berklee All Stars tour.

    Hee.

  • luly

    That’s wonderful :D.
I think it’s great how many idols are doing so many good things for their chosen charities.

  • tripp_ncwy

I see Kris has been cheating on Jim Cantiello with Andy Davis multiple bromances.

RT Thanks you guys, I love the “love”, but @KrisAllen is doing the heavy lifting. You gotta love AMBASSADOR KRIS!

mj, contact Andy Davis. I KNOW he’d love the press coverage from your blog. Heck, we’ll give you a plug if it helps. :)

I’m very proud of Kris for all he does for music education as well as other charities. I’m proud to be a fan of his as he embodies my opinion of what an idol should be.

I’m also thankful or programs like this. Education funding is being cut across the board and first to suffer is music and the arts if they are even in the schools at all.

  • dy77

I am just really proud to be a Kris fan, every day, but especially today. This is a very good thing he and Andy Davis are doing.

  • Masieta

So proud of Kris! He is great with kids. There are always lots of smiles when he’s around. This is a good weekend for Kris – the L.A. Spring Fair, his acting debut on Friday night, and being named Ambassador for Berklee. I’m glad that even though he’s been busy writing, he hasn’t fallen off the face of the earth but is dividing his time among other activities as well.

  • washpd

This is great! So proud of Kris and all he has done and continues to do for causes that he cares about. It’s also nice to see exactly what the money fans raised and contributed to the Alright with Music fundraiser will go to. I always appreciate it when a charity lets you know exactly how your money was spent.

(MJ, I agree with the earlier suggestion above. I bet if you contact Andy Davis, he can make sure you get in to see the Boston event.)

Yep! He’s the boss. Just tweet at him. I’m sure he can work something out.

  • ilovekrisallen39

    Yep MJ. He sure is.

  • Indigobunting

Aw, good for Kris! What a great thing to do.

  • BigNLiddle

So you have to either be invited or part of the program to attend?

  • hoosiermama

    You gotta love AMBASSADOR KRIS!

    Yes. Yes, we do. :-)

  • jinger

That summer program sounds good. I’ll have to check it out. Does anyone know if this is the A+ insider info Jim C. had, or is there something else?

  • SpenserJ

What a great cause, Kris is really generous with his time. This is quite a commitment for a busy performer, so obviously he cares about this issue a great deal.

I think it’s an important issue as well. I believe music, and all of the arts are vital to a well rounded education. Not to mention what it does for brain development. I’m saddened when I see public schools that have to drop or reduce arts education because of budget issues.

It’s a 15 minute T ride for me. Would be dumb not to do it! :).

We would love a first hand account.

  • Ratna12

So great of Kris to be associated with this.
And even if the kids don’t continue playing music, the confidence and the social aspect in programs like these are great.

    So proud of Kris.

    I very much agree.

OK, what did I miss from Jim Cantiello?

  • tripp_ncwy

I DM’d Andy to clarify the concerts were not open to the public. Here is his response.

“Unfortunately for Kris fans the concerts will be for students and invited press only. All has to do with security at the schools. Andy”

  • Duke

I’ll try and record it for everyone.
