On Monday night, Kris Allen performs at the gorgeous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, located outside of Denver, CO. Along with Angel Taylor, Kris is acting as one of the opening acts for Barenaked Ladies.

The concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Mountain time with Angel Taylor taking the stage. Look for Kris’s set to begin somewhere around 8 p.m. Mountain time.

  • IndyMuse

I grew up in the area, and pictures don’t do justice to this venue. It overlooks the city, and you see all the city lights for the whole Denver metro area from up there, as well as the rocks that surround you. It is breathtaking. I would seriously fly to Denver just for the occasion if David Cook ever had a concert there. There could be few venues that could ever come close for beauty. It is usually cool up there even in summer, and dry.

In other notes, hope you’re having fun, tigervixxen.

Most of the tweeters had no idea who Kris was — they’ve likely never even heard LLWD — or if they have, not very often

I didn’t have tons of time, but I skimmed the tweet list and it looks like those who didn’t know him ended up having positive comments – saying he’s not bad, the drummer is good, etc. The only negative one is the grinch, I mean gritchmusic, and some girl who wants a relative to die to will her $11,000, or $11,000 from her own mother or she’s returning the gift?? Gotta put some of these comments in perspective LOL!

  • JudyL

Like lots of Kris’ fans, I use to really get bothered by criticism about him……not so much any more. I still don’t like it but I now know it won’t really influence his career. He isn’t going to be liked by everyone, no one is.

Kris is opening for some big names who obviously recognize him as talented. And the concerts where he headlines have been very successful and I think even his fans are surprised how much fun his concerts are.
I’m glad he’s getting to perform at Red Rocks and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

  • Elliegrll

Most of the tweeters had no idea who Kris was — they’ve likely never even heard LLWD — or if they have, not very often

This worried me about Kris opening for BNL. They have a new album that isn’t going anywhere, and they aren’t getting any airplay. Most of the people who are going to see them are older, and mainly interested in the groups earlier songs. They are also people who might not listen to a lot of radio, so they haven’t been exposed to Kris, and will only focus on the AI connection. I really wish that he had the 20 plus opening shows with Maroon 5, and just a few dates with BNL.

I really wanted Kris to open for acts that are currently being played on the radio. I think Kris receiving the better reception the other night in Chicago, in comparison to the one that BNL got, is really telling. The crowd in Chicago was younger and there to party, so they were more into Kris’ up tempo songs and the covers, and really weren’t familiar with BNL’s songs.

  • girlygirl

I’m sure many in the crowd enjoyed Kris — unfortunately the twitter list included a handful of people who hated him. Gritchmusic was the only one who was really nasty though. And have to expect some of this stuff when opening for other bands — especially ones whose fans may not have any clue about who Kris is.

  • linsmile

“AAA,” THANK YOU, that’s IT, annovich. I didn’t know that reference, but looked it up and that’s exactly the label I’ve been looking for.

So maybe I’m just slow, but I’ve been thinking of what BNL, The Fray, Lifehouse, Train, John Mayer, U2, Switchfoot, probably even Maroon 5 and Swell Season have in common – all of which have a connection of some sort to Kris and this label fits. Thanks.

Anyone else use this label? (or maybe everyone else already knows this!)

So does/will AAA apply to Kris and if so, is that a good thing?

  • ilovekrisallen39

yep girlgirl I wasn’t mad about some of the tweets just the one’s from Gritchmusic. That one just sounded very hateful. But we at least know half the crowd liked him from the standing o in got from them,so that’s kick awesome.

  • girlygirl

Kris has actually gotten some spins for LLWD on AAA radio stations. But, like most stations that are geared more to rock than pop-rock it’s hard for ex-Idols to get much play on these stations — even Cook and Daughtry rarely get AAA spins.

So does/will AAA apply to Kris and if so, is that a good thing?

There aren’t a lot of Triple AAA stations in the country. The top song in that format is on 28 stations. From my experience with them, there isn’t one type of music that they all play, and I don’t think they are doing well as a format, which may be one of the reasons why there are so few stations that fit that format, or why a song that only has 679 spins for the week, is at the top of that format.

I want Kris’ music to be on as many formats as possible, since that would mean that he’s reaching more people. But, PDs on those types of stations might think that his music is too pop for them, plus they might hold the whole AI thing against him. I think they’d wait to see more from him, before they’d label him as “cool” enough to play his music.

  • tripp_ncwy

    ngoik

Does anyone know who she is, or what she’s doing with BNL? Is she just helping them with their equipment or something, and why would she think it’s funny or alright to diss the groups opening act.

According to their website, Gritch is giving all of their music away for free. I’m fighting the urge to tweet them about that.

  • ross

I’m sure many in the crowd enjoyed Kris — unfortunately the twitter list included a handful of people who hated him. Gritchmusic was the only one who was really nasty though. And have to expect some of this stuff when opening for other bands — especially ones whose fans may not have any clue about who Kris is.

Why is what people say on twitter so important?? I never read these concert tweets. I just read them when they’re repeated on these threads.

It’s a few people. Usually, we don’t know anything about them. Think of the biggest loser you see on the street and this could be the twitter person whose opinion you’re paying attention to.

Crowd response is more important. All that really matters is the overall performance, and if it seems to be well-recieved. Twitter opinions are like the opinions of people on forums and blogs. Interesting, but not very important to the artist in the long run.

As for the negatives or positives of Kris opening for BNL, I’ve thought about this stuff, but I have to say, when I saw Kris open for them he got a great reception. Granted, there were probably a lot of Kris fans there, but that may be the case at any concert where he’s opening. I don’t think Kris can always pick and choose his opportunities. This is a good opportunity, though, in my opinion, because, obviously, BNL has some great gigs. And Kris gets to play before these big, sometimes enormous crowds. It’s very good exposure.

  • linsmile

ngoik is fending off Kris fans. She has said he’s “not bad” a couple of times. She’s a musician who also on her myspace says she is interested in live sound production. She just answered the question “who are your touring with?” – “Well, I’m with BNL and the openers are Kris Allen and Angel Taylor.” Her opinion is that no one should ever cover the Beatles.

Well then she should write to the IDOL producers who have Beatles as a recurring theme on the show LOL!

Seriously, the Beatles have written some of the best songs ever, and she thinks no one should cover them? And we’re worrying about her tweets why???

And the grinch is just bitter they’re not opening for BNL. That is all.

  • linsmile

Ross, you make a really good point about Twitter. It’s easy to get caught up in meaningless drama (at least I’m susceptable to that).

OK – how do I identify the format of the radio station I listen to?

It may be an AAA station. And for me there is a connection between this format and Kris. Although all of you who know so much better about this have made the points I would guess are true – that they might be “too cool” for AI psople. Kris can mabye gain their respect (he’s certainly worthy of it), but maybe it doesn’t matter too much if the format doesn’t reach a enough people.

  • girlygirl

ngoik appears to be part of BNL’s production crew. She’s also a musician herself.

    http://www.myspace.com/nataliegoik

I do tend to get too caught up in what people tweet from concerts — probably because without being there myself and without a cellcast or livestream, this is the only way I can tell how the show seems to be going (at least until the videos show up).

I can usually ignore tweets from people who don’t like Kris — or any of my other favorities. But not if they are nasty — that just really bothers me, because IMO there’s no need for that.

As for this one person, I’m surprised she would tweet anything that could be construed as negative about the opening acts — don’t know if that’s the smartest thing in the world to do when she’s working for BNL…

  • justminx

Just poking my head in here to say I’ve been hearing on other sites about some pretty nasty tweets re: Kris. Funny thing is I’m not going to see Kris @ the Greek Theater because I don’t want to waste the money on BNL!! LOL

  • ross

Ross, you make a really good point about Twitter. It’s easy to get caught up in meaningless drama (at least I’m susceptable to that).

Not only that, but there are thousands of people there tonight. Not just a few people who are on twitter. That partial standing O sounds pretty good, to me. For an opening act, especially.

I have to agree anyone who works for BNL should be supporting their opening acts. If only by not dissing them.

This seems to have been a successful concert appearance for Kris so I guess all I’m saying is let’s try to put the tweets in perspective.

  • tripp_ncwy

It might not have been a sellout but that’s a lot of people.

there are several ways to identify station’s format. Easiest way might be simply to google the call letters, adding the word “format” to the search — 9 times out of 10 a link will pop up telling you what format it plays. Oftentimes the info can also be found on the station’s website.

  • sleepinin

    Yeah me too!

  • vanjess38

My thoughts? Both Grinch and Ngoik are just jealous Kris is opening for BNL infront of these huge crowds. I don’t know about Gritchmusic but it looks like they’re not even signed to any label and Ngoik is also trying to break.
They both wished they were in his position, lol!

  • wordnerdarchie

I checked out that gritchmusic site. Looks like they’re an Indie band. I listened to some of their music. Heh. I think it would be wise for whoever runs that twitter account to not alienate any possible new fans from another musician, don’t you think? ;)

    http://www.myspace.com/gritchmusic

ETA: They’re from Denver, so I bet they’re wishing they were playing that venue. LOL.

  • FaithfulFan

Well I love Kris and KAB and no tweeter is going to change my opinion of them. So I just say pooh on the tweeters and their negative tweets. I’ll continue to enjoy Kris and they can enjoy their band of choice. Anyway, the positive tweets far outnumbered the few negative tweets.

  • linsmile

My radio station format is AAA. Now I know! I couldn’t find the info at their site. But, I found them on Wikipedia – it took me awhile because they are not typically referred to by their call letters – but I finally found it.

They put out a sampler every year for charity and this past year there was a track by Mat Kearney. So many people that Kris has written with, played with, covered and admired are played on this format.

    And…Twitter is the devil.
    Who said that? :)

The funny thing about the musicians who diss AI alums is that they, themselves, rarely sound as good live. I don’t know why the pretentious music snobs want to begrudge someone else a living. A lot of these whiners wouldn’t make it to see the judges at an audition.

I guess very few (Kelly, Carrie, JHud, Daughtry) have managed to shake off that “stigma.”

  • Ratna12

That picture above by Steve Luna is great. It is from the perspective of the band. Kris and probably Cale too were playing in front of 30 or more people before in small bars all around Little Rock, and now they are playing in front of those crowd in another state. Must be so amazing for them. I’m happy for them.

OK, I’ll admit. For a brief moment I considered flying in, visiting a friend in Denver and timing it so I could go to this concert. After Kris’ tweet, I know why I didn’t do this. It will be so much better to go when he is headlining there, right?

So great for Kris and his band to be able to play Red Rocks! It’s an amazing venue.

Sorry to crash the concert party, but I thought this would be a good place to ask. Does anyone know where I can get an mp3 of the acoustic LLWD that Kris did at the radio station today (otherwise known as Song for a Dead Ladybug)? Heh.

It was the best version of the song I’ve heard (though granted I haven’t heard that many) and I’d love to get a copy of it.

It’s always thrilling to see tweets saying they really like Kris when they didn’t know him before, or didn’t expect him to be so great. Hey folks — every band is going to have its detractors. Twitter sort of flattens everything by giving everyone’s comments equal weight. Who cares what a couple of people say? Kris has, as this thread attests, a lot of very loyal supporters and the number is growing….You can’t please all the people all of the time…

  • tigervixxxen

I just got back from this show, had a great time! I live pretty close to Red Rocks and went to the show just to see Kris. It was my first time seeing him live and was not disappointed! The band was so tight and worked off each other so well, I was impressed. Kris’ voice sounded especially good during Man in the Mirror, some of the notes he held caught me off guard in a good way. I was one of the few standing for his set but the crowd seemed into it and were clapping along and by the time we got to LLWD everyone was singing along. A lot gave Kris a standing ovation as he ended the set. A guy next to me wasn’t sure who Kris was and someone else had told him that Kris was from Idol and he asked me if Kris would be doing all covers. I said maybe a couple but that he’d be doing original music from his album and the guy said that is exactly what he wanted to hear. After the set he said Kris was really good and very much worth watching. I was hoping to hear Heartless since that was my favorite moment of his on Idol but WAOMF and Red Guitar were standout moments for me and I’m glad he chose to do those songs. I stayed for all of BNL’s show even though I’m not really interested in their music, they ended up being a good fun band. All in all it was a great night. I’m glad you all got to see in pics (and surely video to come) this beautiful and majestic venue and part of the world I’m from .

Reading back some of the comments here lead me to some additional thoughts. Red Rocks holds about 9,500 and I’d say was mostly full by the time Kris came on. I was down at the front and saw a couple Kris fans but not many. I wouldn’t say the crowd was lame or tough, they seemed interested and engaged, just they were not standing up. I don’t think they would have stood for any opener. The audience make up I’d say was more of a 30s-50s crowd with some children and teens.

Also, one thing to note about the typical Denver audience is that Idol is not big here at all. The media gives it very little coverage compared to what I see in many other markets. And I’m not just talking season 9, this has been a trend for a good while. The Idol tour has not been to Colorado since season 5 (and is finally coming back this year). This area also doesn’t typically get Idols on their first or even second pass through on their tours. However local radio has been pretty supportive on HAC so there is love for Daughtry, David Cook, Kelly, and Kris’ singles have been successful here. We have no CHR station though. Just thought that may be relevant to the discussion of audience reaction.

  • almondean88

Thanks tigervixxxen for your great recap. My favorite part of the thread is to hear from people who are there, enjoying Kris! Thanks for all your tweets and pics. Forget about negative tweets, just enjoy how thrilled Kris and the band must be to play in such a wonderful place.

It can be hard to get people to give a listen to someone from “AI”. I’ve been trying to get my older relatives to go to a concert, but no luck. Then on a drive home from a family vacation I just put Kris’s CD in & before I knew it the whole car was singing “it’s allright, allright with me” Then my aunt said, “Who is that guy, he’s great!” I gave her a copy of Kris’s CD for her birthday & she loves it. Sometimes it takes some work to get people to listen. That is why it is great for Kris to open for a variety of other bands. Lots of new people to hear his music.

  • pgc5368

Thank you Tigervixxxen for the awesome recap. This looks like an amazing venue and a large crowd. So glad that you got to see Kris live, he is amazing. I hope that we get some close up video’s from this show.

    Great post almondean88.

One thing I think us Kris fans need to be careful of is not to look like over-invested/BSC fans to these people that might tweet negative comments about Kris. I don’t think a lot of them even know that they are being followed by the list. Since Kris is an opening act, a lot of people will be there to see BNL and not him. I think he will be exposed to alot of new people and will win over most of them, but not all.

  • jacquesthedog

So glad that Kris was able to experience playing at Red Rocks. My husband and I lived in Englewood, CO actually near the Denver Tech Center for about 1 year and a half, and we loved to hike and hang at RR.
You are able to stand on that stage when no one is playing, and let me tell you it is a magnificient view. I hope everyone had an opportunity to meet Kris. I was able to here in Chicago for the free concert sponsored by Wallgreens at the base of the John Hancock Center. I have so many pictures an videos as I was in the front row, and later today I will upload them and send them to MJ-and or list the links. As I mentioned in other areas on the blog, he was the most gracious guy, he signed autographs, and gave away autographed pictures in the heat and humidity-he does not like his picture to be taken, as I assume you have read (unless on stage). He was outside for at least 1 hour and half with his manager signing autographs, so my husband and I were impressed. I would say to all the fans, dont worry about negative things tweeted, or bashing by critics-if you like Kris then go to see him. Opinions are just that, opinions.

tigervixxxen – thanks for the recap! You’re lucky to live so close to this venue! Looks like a great place to get some exercise too.

I looked at the various twitpics of the crowd, and would have guessed it was close to full as you stated. Heck, 7,000, 8,000, 9,000, whatever – it’s thousands of people, many of whom were probably not there to see Kris.

While I’m sure it would have been great fun to have an entire arena full of Kris fans, I’m happy to know that he got exposure to thousands of potentially new fans – that’s the point of opening for another more established band! Yay!

  • majal1

Kris performing to an unchartered territory is a risk he needs to take and by opening to any artist like BNL, Keith Urban, Marroon, Kris needs to take a calculated risk like song choices, voice control, and as usual works hard to win some of this people who don’t know him and are outside AI bubble. It is normal that this people not know Kris especially this is the first time he is touring, but eventually, his name will be a household name especially when his CDs continues playing in the airwaves. Kris needs to pick songs that people can adapt, I like Before We Come Undone, it’s cathy, nice melody, Send Me All Your Angels is another great song, Heartless, Let It Rain, and The Truth. For now while he is opening Kris should refrain from covering The Beatles because BNL fans have known original artist and would make a comparison. That would put Kris to his disadvantage. I love Kris and I am following his career, so Kris needs to act like a SUPERSTAR, be confident, speaks eloquently and just own the stage. I remembered when he auditioned at AI, Kara and Randy recommended that. You are confident, you will own the stage and the audience. It’s never too late for Kris to attend some public speaking class so he can think on his feet. A lot of actors have trained to do that, learned how to act, sing, and talk. His managers has to evaluate Kris with a goal of longevity in this business. I will see kris on 7-22 and 7-24 and I will love his performance, but it is the other people he needs to win. I love you kris.

I agree w/this. Although, people who tweet things need to understand that unless their tweets are protected, people looking for info regularly search out tweeters and will reply to them without having their tweets listed in a forum. I agree that we shouldn’t come across as BSC fans, though.

  • J9BT

majal1 – have fun on 7/22 and 7/24! I have seen Kris live, recently, and I think it’s very important for him to do a few solid covers for audiences where people don’t know him. That’s actually a great way to win over new fans, since many people will not recognize his music – but starting with “Heartless” or doing a Beatles cover is a great way to get potential fans to pay attention.

I must also comment that I don’t think Kris needs public speaking training at all – IMO he is very good about connecting with new audiences, bringing up things relevant to them to get them going. His banter is quite funny, witty and tailored to different audiences.

I definitely agree it’s important to take calculated risks and to open for more well known artists so he can expand his fan base. I can’t wait to see what happens with Maroon 5, whose current song is tearing up the charts!

Kris should refrain from covering The Beatles because BNL fans have known original artist and would make a comparison.

Comparisons are going to happen no matter what Kris does. I hope he keeps Come Together in his set, because his version of the song is so much fun, and such a different interpretation. Not everyone will like his interpretation, but it’s better than trying to mimic the original, which is something that Kris just does not do, and playing in front of crowds who aren’t familiar with his music, the covers are just as important as his original material. The covers catch people’s attention, and allow them to become engaged with the performance. I also think that Kris’ recent radio appearances show that he’s pretty good at thinking on his feet, and being very witty. But, I doubt he will ever put on airs that he’s a superstar. Kris has said countless times that he wants people to know that he’s a normal person, just like them. He is just a musician, which doesn’t make him better or worse than anyone else. People have commented on how down to earth he is, and that’s not only something that he’s not going to change, but it is also a great selling point, and something that has opened a lot of people’s eyes about him.

I wonder if Kris left out Heartless so that he would be able to perform Come Together, which he didn’t perform the last time he opened for BNL in a non-radio sponsored concert, or if he thought that the crowd wouldn’t relate to the song. On that note, I wonder if a BNL crowd would be more open to songs like Let it Rain, Send Me All Your Angels, and Before We Come Undone than the more up tempo songs like Can’t Stay Away or Alright With Me.

Does anyone remember how long it took for Kris’ first video to be ready after the video was shot? Can’t wait for this one!”

That’s a good question. I know it was on VH1 the 1st week in November, and LLWD single was released for adds around 10/1, so my guess is a few weeks since I don’t think the video was recorded right when the single was released. I’m pretty sure it was shot in one night, though.

On that note, I wonder if a BNL crowd would be more open to songs like Let it Rain, Send Me All Your Angels, and Before We Come Undone than the more up tempo songs like Can’t Stay Away or Alright With Me.

Elliegirl, I just skimmed the thread so I may have missed a discussion about this, but why do you think this? I’ve never been to a BNL concert myself, but I do have a friend who’s been many times, and I own a couple of their cds. They are pretty much known for being a party band. People go to BNL concerts to have a good time. A lot of their music is kind of quirky and has a sense of humor to it. I think AWM and Can’t Stay Away are actually the types of songs that would go over really well with a BNL crowd.

At least some seem to be open minded toward Kris.

The BNL fans I talked to genuinely had never heard of Kris. A woman said, “Isn’t he country?” I said, “He’s from AR but he’s not country.”

I mentioned LLWD and a man downloaded it on the spot. Seemed open. This is a great opportunity for Kris Allen to become known to BNL fans.

One woman had heard of Kris but said, “BNL is better.” I said, “Kris Allen is 25, BNL has been around 20 yrs. Give him a chance. She agreed.

After last night I think she feels the need to bond with Kris’ crew/band.

Just was looking at mediabase and the top40 station, KUDD, in SLC spun TT 51 times in the past week! The HAC station, KJMY spun it 27 times. There should be more recognition of that song with the concert crowd tonight from folks having heard it on the radio (unlike last night’s crowd–Denver stations haven’t added it yet).

    Thanks, girlygirl & J9BT!

As I mentioned in other areas on the blog, he was the most gracious guy, he signed autographs, and gave away autographed pictures in the heat and humidity-he does not like his picture to be taken, as I assume you have read (unless on stage).

There are tons of photos of Kris with his fans. He’s always willing to take a picture with anyone. He said Jamie Foxx gave him good advice when he said it only takes a minute to pose for a picture with a fan.

I guess this guy doesn’t know Kris does not like being photographed. I wonder what this is about.

Kris may not like being photographed, as in posing (few people do). But as I see it, he’s not actually unwilling. He’s photographed constantly. He knows it’s good publicity and it’s all part of his job. I mean, he’s not elusive. He doesn’t ever make an issue of it, or avoid it, to my knowledge.

ok, I scrolled back through Kris’s tweets. He shot the video for LLWD on Oct. 17-18 (it was an overnight shoot). The video was released on November 6.

Regarding Kris not liking to have his picture taken, I’ve just got to say that the first this has been mentioned was in a review/interview which was done at a professional photo shoot. I think Kris does not like photo shoots. Think “American’s Next Top Model” He does not like to get in front of professional photogs & have say “make a sexy face”.

However, there are 100s of pictures of fans getting pictures with Kris. He is sweet, smiling, and relaxed. As Ross mentioned, Kris took to heart the advice of Jamie Foxx. He always makes time for his fans, and for their pictures.

    Well put, almondean88!

I don’t think it was a surprise for his fans to read recently that Kris doesn’t like photo shoots. I’d be surprised if he did. But I don’t think that extends to fan photos.
