After the jump, check out Kris Allen performing “Live Like We’re Dying” at MTV’s It’s On With Alexa Chung. It got a little chaotic there, about 3/4s of the way through, but the band will tighten up with time.

And in other MTV news, Kris tells Jim Cantiello that one of the compromises he had to make on his new album, Kris Allen, was the production on “Heartless”.

The Phil Collins vibe was producer Sam Remi’s idea. “It’s not that I didn’t want to put it on there. [It's just that] the version was a little bit different for me,” says Kris, “That was definitely the producer’s feel for it. He wanted that in there.”

Some critics like the new arrangement. Me? I prefer Kris’s stripped down version of the song from Idol…

I feel bad for kinda liking the version of Heartless now! :P .

But yeah, acoustic Heartless > ALL. I would’ve preferred the album version to be more rock like the tour.

  • Eileen99

Other than the first few bars of the new Heartless, I do like this version. I’ve liked all versions, though, for different moods. Jim has been hinting he’d have exciting news this week for acoustic Kris fans, hopefully that will be part of the interview he puts up today.

  • hwc

    Me, too.

OMKKKKK I FINALLY BROKE DOWN AND BOUGHT ” KRIS ALLEN”!!!!!!! I<3 kristopher

  • happygolucky

    Hey jammasta,

I LOL’ed on your review of Heartless on a previous thread.

Okay, I seriously love these songs. I even LOVE the version of Heartless that’s apparently not very popular (HUGE WTF @ the note on ‘You’ll never find nobody better than MEEEE!’ though, that’s kinda scary and tbh it sounds like Kris got stabbed in the ass with a fork ala Tom and Jerry. I kinda lol at it and O_O @ the same time. I’m confused. It’s not a terrible moment in the song, but it catches me off guard every time. .)

That’s also the only part I don’t like about the new version of Heartless.

Anyway, more great news for LLWD. Six Top 40 adds so far with a station in DC having a market rank of 9. YAY!!!

    Kris Drizzle!!!!

Anyway, more great news for LLWD. Six Top 40 adds so far with a station in DC having a market rank of 9. YAY!!!

And on the building charts right now they have him up 2 spots this week from 36 to 34 on Top 40.

  • auntieaimee

Not surprised that he felt that way about the album version of Heartless. I felt the same way. That track was the least indicative of his style and it kind of sticks out from the rest of the record. Oh, well. Whatcha gonna do?

  • leome

Yeah, I’m also not feeling the new Heartless. And it’s so overproduced. Meh

LLWD looks like a bitch to perform live. It’s such a mess during the chorus and by the end. He sounded better on GMA.

  • sunny2

I’m sure Kris’ stripped down version of Heartless is sentimental to him. That’s what he’s known for on AI it was his crowning moment, and it’s HIM.

I hated the album version, but it’s growing on me.

  • carmine2008

Heartless is my least favorite on the album. But, I don’t actually hate it. Hahaha.

  • anovich

something’s off on this performance. And Kris pulled out one of his ear monitors so maybe there was something wrong with the sound mix

  • NewFan

Sorry Kris but I preferred Sam Remi’s (on-the-album) version of Heartless. Actually, perhaps I should say that I disliked his version the least. I am sorry that you had to include this, or any other version, of Heartless on your album. I’ve never liked it and I would have really enjoyed hearing another song of your own.

  • jonoave

    anovich:

something’s off on this performance. And Kris pulled out one of his ear monitors so maybe there was something wrong with the sound mix

I think so too, from the few times he keep fiddling with the ear piece.

On another note, I’m kinda happy he appeared in this show. This is a younger crowd who’s not really familiar with AI, no? Like the last time he went on and nobody’s familiar with him and Adam. I’m glad to see some of the girls in the audience singing along, and some of the guys actually bopped their head along. Maybe the radioplay and video helped?

Great move to introduce Kris and his music to a new audience, as compared to last time where Kris was just a sit-in guest as an American idol winner.

  • adamisthemanfan

I agree with Kris. I dont like the version that is on his CD. He should have put his foot down and told them “No” oh well. Too late now

  • Mark

I agree with Kris. I dont like the version that is on his CD. He should have put his foot down and told them ‘No’ oh well. Too late now

Eh, you know, compromise is compromise, and he was working under strange conditions. It works kind of as a bonus track on the album anyway (before the actual bonus track), so it just kind of gets a shrug from me. Personally, I like that it’s a different take but, that said, it doesn’t have the same impact as the acoustic.

  • Tess

Did Kris really diss a producer on a public venue? Oh my!

At least Kelly waited until she was somewhat successful.

  • jersey

I didn’t watch the vid, only read MJ’s little recap of it, but it doesn’t sound like he dissed the producer. He just said the production was the producer’s idea, and that it was different for Kris, not something he would have done on his own. I don’t think he said it was bad. Again, I haven’t had a chance to actually listen yet, but I didn’t read it as a diss.

  • JosieX

I like the AI version of Heartless better too. I really like the album overall, but wish that he could have used the version he preferred of that song.

  • vanjess38

I don’t think Kris will say anything His management haven’t asked him to say.
Lots of people have complained about the new heartless. I’m sure they asked him to say that and he’s not dissing the producer at all. He was just trying to clear the air since he had done the song before and people are already familiar with the various versions.

  • ross

Did Kris really diss a producer on a public venue? Oh my!

    No, he didn’t.

I look at the Heartless thing like this. It’s a song that means a lot to him. He performed it on AI at a crucial moment, He performed it on tour, and at radio stations an other venues. The reason it’s on the album is because it’s heavily identified with him.

So when it finally comes time for him to record it, why shouldn’t he get to do it his way? Doing it his way is what got it all that attention in the first place. Why take it and make it all about Salaam Remi’s arrangement? The fans don’t give a crap about that. They want Kris Allen’s version of Heartless. The way Kris Allen wants to perform it.

I don’t mind this version but I’m certain if Kris had been allowed to handle the arrangement it would have been one of the highlights of the album. So I’m sorry he didn’t get to do it, and I don’t blame him for being a little sorryabout that.

  • Tess

    From the MTV article:

What was his biggest defeat during the whole process?

His answer? “Um … ‘Heartless,’ ” Allen said. “It’s not that I didn’t want to put it on there. [It's just that] the version was a little bit different for me.”

And Allen didn’t stop there, saying that the whole “In the Air Tonight” vibe was definitely Remi’s idea, and that, in his opinion, the album version of “Heartless” is a far different thing from the one he first debuted during his “Idol” days. And that’s not necessarily a good thing, according to the singer.
“That was definitely the producer’s feel for it. He wanted that in there,” Allen said about the Collins influence. “It was different for me, because it was a different song.”

And while he might not be crazy about the new version of “Heartless,” Allen realizes his fans think otherwise. So, ultimately, he’s willing to let this one go … you can’t win ‘em all, it would seem.

  • girlygirl

He doesn’t dis the producer. He simply says that isn’t the way he would have done it on his own.

  • Mtlfan

There is no dissing of the producer from Kris, he just has a different opinion of what should have been. And he is so entitled too after singing it a zillion times since the show.

But i must confess that I like the album version very much. Very cool sound. And I’m sure that if it went along Kris idea it would have been great too. So I’ll have to find a good acoustic version of it for my ipod though :)

  • hwc

You are supposed to wait ’til after you’ve been dumped before you blame everything on the rat bastards at your record company thay made you do all those bad songs.

  • Letitride

I’m with Kris on this one…I don’t like the cd version nearly it as much.
Given he was lauded by fans and critics for his take on “Heartless” on AI, it seems so odd that the producer wanted to rearrrange it.
Bad choice on their part, I’m already hitting skip when it comes up.

  • alwaysintrouble

‘Editor’ not ‘publisher’ and that would have taken balls!!!
However, kudos to him for being honest in how he felt…

  • lifeisgood

They were not in sync on how to work the song – it’s not “dissing” to have a different opinion.

  • suebrody

Yeah, I’m also not feeling the new Heartless. And it’s so overproduced. Meh

LLWD looks like a bitch to perform live. It’s such a mess during the chorus and by the end. He sounded better on GMA.

Yeah, ITA. I love love loved Heartless on Idol, I liked the initial recorded version, but this one? No, not so much. Or at all. Oh, well, yay for LLWD’s adds!!! And you know what? Kris will have the experience to be forceful on the next album. He’s just learning how this works, right?

Luv, you never let me down. Kristopher? You sound like his parents, which is ironic, no? lol

  • PattyP

If there is a “diss” involved in the text that Tess bolded above, it’s from the author of the interview, whose words those are. Neither of the bolded lines is a direct quote from Kris, correct? He may have conveyed that he felt the version of Heartless was the producer’s version rather than true to his feel for the song, but nowhere is there a direct quote from him saying that wasn’t a good thing … He just said it was different and not what he was used to.

  • Tess

Maybe I’m really confused…but I think Kris has gone public with the fact he does not like a song on HIS album and he has made people aware it wasn’t his choice to put the song on the album…he pretty much had to bow to the producer. Right?

Well, sorry, the album has Kris Allen on the cover and regardless of what is on the album he “owns” it. Now, if after its publication he is making sure that people are aware that he isn’t responsible for what is on his album isn’t that putting “blame” on someone else.

I don’t see any difference between this scenerio and what Kelly did…and she was definitely dissing someone. And, on the other hand, I have heard that DC may not have been thrilled with all the arrangements on his album but I don’t recall him Publicly stating that. He just changed up the songs on his tour and did them the way he liked them.

I’m not making a judgment call on Kris…I just don’t think I would have been vocal about things on the album I don’t like…I’d swallow my pride and own everything…and then “fix” what I could the next time around. That way everyone saves face. YMMV.

  • tinydance

My friend and I were listening to Kris’s cd in the car and when it came to the new version of Heartless my friend LOVED IT.

My friend likes the booming sound of Heartless and cranked it up…lol

Jim Cantiello’s interview is up. It’s a good one – Kris is so relaxed, lots of good music talk. http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/456997/kris-allen-im-not-a-general-pop-artist.jhtml#name=news&id=1626447

  • cookcricket

    1) I’m not familiar with the Kelly story.
    2) As a fan, I completely love Kris’s honesty.
    3) If I’m not mistaken this was recorded early on and Kris admitted that it took awhile for him to give voice to what he wanted on this album. By this time I would think “Heartless” being on the album was a sealed deal.
    4) Where is the “news” in the fact that these artists don’t have complete say on their albums.
    5) Someone said Kris’s fans were split on “Heartless”. I’d say the heavier side of the split is agreeing with Kris. (Nothing to factually base this on other than reading many comments.) But It’s almost a relief to know that this sound is not truly Kris. Bodes well for what we’ll hear from him in the future.

Having said all of this, I kinda like the vibe of this Heartless (took some time once I got past the fact it wasn’t the acoustic version), but it’s not Kris Allen and I simply love the Kris Allen vibe. I look at it/listen to it as a fun novelty. ;)

  • tinydance

I just saw John Mayer on Access Hollywood.

John was wearing his hair like Kris.

He was wearing that green plaid shirt that Kris wore when he sang on Idol.

    lol

  • cookcricket

Kris was happy w/ the fact that people were liking it. His response, good, good, good. Then qualifies, it was different for me, it’s a different song. He’s right!

  • jammasta

Still not seeing how it’s a diss. I don’t think Kris stating that he disagreed with the producer. I think it’s more the fact that Jim calling it a “defeat” in his question that made it sound like more of a diss.

I applaud him for his honesty, and he didn’t seem to be complaining too much about it. I just hope he’s careful about this. A little worried he could be seen as a pushover, and a little worried that a little disagreement can blow up into a huge spat.

  • tinydance

I don’t see a problem with it. The first cd by the winner is heavily monitored and has “input” by 19E and they probably control some of the content.

Kris still had a large portion of control on his cd.

Okay the only problem I had with that interview was– that it wasn’t long enough!!! I want more! I can’t wait for the Slezak interview!!

    #130 Another LLWD
    #185 Heartless

Kris Allen + Heartless = Win!!!

The 2nd LLWD is the track from the album, the 1st is the single version that was released months ago.

It’s people buying the single from the album directly. John Mayer also has a bunch of different versions of his songs on the charts right now.

Did you see the album charts? Kris regular is still #8 overall. But Kris “deluxe” has made its way up to #12. It would be awesome if he could get both versions of the album into the Top 10 at the same time.

It also has LLWD at 38, I think.

I loved what BB said about the release date and who his competition is:

I agree with Kris. I love Live Like We’re Dying, but really do not like the new version of Heartless. His original was perfection. Why did they mess with it?

My simple answer to that – given the fact that it’s charting – is so that we would buy it again…? I really like it, I know it’s not what Kris wanted or liked, but I think it’s cool to have another version out there even if it’s the only time we’ll ever hear Kris sound like this. It’s a collector’s item, lol.

And that was cool seeing Kris in the John Mayer audience (well from a picture of a tv screen that I saw).

  • amielee

just watched Jim C.’s interview with Kris…i love it!!! i enjoyed the interview. it was so informative and very funny at the same time…KRIM is just the best!!!

  • Starr

I actually was one of the people who hated the new “Heartless” when I first heard it on the 30-second snippets, but I like it a lot now that I’ve listened to it a bunch of times. It’s groovier, it’s got a cool beat, and if you ignore the busy instruments thrown in the background, Kris is pretty much singing at the same tempo that he sung in when he did the original performance live. I love the low register in the beginning, and I like the R&B stylings he inserted towards the end. It may not have been the best possible version that we could have hoped for, but really, this CD is practically flawless. I would say the weakest song for me is “Let It Rain”, but I see that many people love that song, which is cool because that means there is something for everybody. I think a lot of non-AI fans will love the new “Heartless”.

  • happygolucky

And that was cool seeing Kris in the John Mayer audience (well from a picture of a tv screen that I saw).

Saw some tweets that David Archuleta and Kris Allen were at John Mayer’s concert tonight. I’m surprised Kris still has energy after all the promo events today.

  • ross

ross, is this in real time

No, I don’t think so. I think this must be a once-a-day chart. But someone asked if the album got higher than #4, and I just noticed it at #3 on this chart. So what it means, I don’t even know.

  • schoolmama

Question, why does Kris say at the end of the discussion of
Heartless to quote Kris “I’m not afraid” is he implying that he is not afraid to say what he did. I have listened several times to make sure I am hearing correctly.

Congrats Kris and Kris fans for the sucess of his CD.

    Loved Jim’s interview with Kris!!
Now we know that “I need to know” is “Spiritual ” according to Kris- this has verified what I thought!!

Still not seeing how it’s a diss. I don’t think Kris stating that he disagreed with the producer. I think it’s more the fact that Jim calling it a ‘defeat’ in his question that made it sound like more of a diss.

Oh, I totally saw it as a classic Kris Allen classic, bankhanded diss.

Which is too say his non-poker face was coming out to play. Can we say duet on Renegade anyone? Or his interview with Slezak about certain issues?

Or like his saying NoBo ‘wasn’t good enough to be on the album.’ Oh wait, that’s not what he meant (trying to be diplomatic), which is not the first statement he made about NoBo that was less than flattering or where his face (oh I remember the press conference after the final 2 show) showed his utter dismay with it.

Kris starts out by talking how he isn’t basically happy with the arrangment and how that it was all the producer, and how that isn’t him. Does he have to spit so it qulifies as a diss? his ‘good good, I’m happy people are enjoying it,’ to Jim’s saying fans are split and some may be enoying it, is totally weak sauce. He’s like ‘well that’s nice.’

I happen to be one of those that like the album version of Heartless. I mean I prefer his more stripped down version. The most stripped down, the better. But I prefer this version to the iTunes or Tour version of the song. Either give me acoustic, or give me funked up. The middle-of-the-road soft pop version does nothing for me personally.

And now for my shallow moments, don’t like the jacket in the interview. That with the sneakers, attitude and seemingly being too small for the chair, make him look like a child. Do like the hair though.

  • Mtlfan

ETA: Truthiness, I agre with almost 100% of your post. I’d probably agree about the jacket and hair, but I can’t seem to get the video to load. grr

See, Kris is sending me bad vibes because I dissed his buddy Adam. Dammit!

  • Seeker

    “NoBo is charting?! ”

LOL but not surprised. I don’t like the song but KA official had used The Kris’ Studio version on the site’s 1st official Kris Allen Video (photoshoot etc), and the chorus had snuck in my head. I wud catch myself humming it for days under my breath. Damn u, Kris and ur beautiful vocals! U make any crap ol’song hummable!

And ppl plz don’t make such a big deal out of the “Biggest defeat on album – Heartless”.
I know most ppl will look at what Kris said as a “diss at producer” but it’s really wasn’t! He just stated the producer and he were in slight disagreement about the arrangement. That doesn’t mean he’s dissing the producer himself!
Fine, he stated that this version of the song is not typically him, but most AI Kris Allen fans probably agree with him and prefer his acoustic take on it.

I for one enjoy the new Heartless, enjoyed the snippet, I enjoy the full version but will also say that I prefer Kris’ stripped down version – that was his moment on AI. (…one of many, me thinks.)

But I do agree that Kris looks like a child on the red big chair! Aww he’s sooo squishable!!! “I shall name him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my squishy… Come’ere Squishy…. “

  • Starr

OK, I’m actually one of the people who loves “No Boundaries” (hated it at first, but dammit Kris songs grow on you, you know?) and I can see why some people would love it, but it has gotten such a bad rep that I would think people would just completely ignore it. I think this is a fluke, though, because it seems some people decided to buy the $16.99 pass that is still available, which includes NoBo, and as a result, bumped up the sales of that song. Kris has 12 songs charting under Pop, with the only songs not charting being Lifetime, Red Guitar and Written All Over My Face. It will be interesting to see whether the songs that ARE charting well are the ones management will use as a gauge to what will please the crowd. Currently, “The Truth” is leading, followed by “Before We Come Undone” and “Can’t Stay Away”, three of the most radio-friendly songs. I’m not surprised.

@Truthiness: I thought it was pretty clear that Kris was unhappy with the song, too. I’m not surprised. I was very surprised, however, to hear that he gave the reason for not liking “The Truth” initially. And I completely understand where he was coming from. He’s used to writing his own songs, and I remember him saying during the earlier parts of the tour that he didn’t want to “sing other people’s songs”. So I can see why he would be frustrated and feel like he was being limited expression-wise (why else would the majority of his songs on the record be about difficulty expressing oneself?). I do LOVE though that Kris’s editing hand was in play in the inclusion of “Is It Over” over “From the AShes”. I love “From the Ashes” and it’s a kickass song, but Jim and Kris are right – it had a completely different feel from the rest of the album. “IS It Over” is one of my favorites on the record, and I’m glad to see that Kris feels the same way.

Squee! “Alright With Me” has definite potential as a single?! YES!!!!

Also, LOL @ Kris and Leona Lewis : “She was punched!” LOL OMG never changer, Kristopher.

STARR: “OK, I’m actually one of the people who loves ‘No Boundaries’ ”
LOL! LOVE? Maybe…. If you break down the lyrics, the song is kinda lame but Kris’ vocals make it work. I love the way he ends the song.

    Even paired with Lennon? O_O

As good as the man was, his name sucks. Explanation saved for where it’s on topic.

lol @ NoBo charting. I thought we’ve seen the last of that song (I do like Kris’s version somewhat and I like the “I AM A ZOMBIE” version over at GC, too bad nobody sings that one lol). Still, for some reason “When you almost gave up on your dreams” gives me a bad feeling in my intestines just because it’s bad grammar. Wow, I need a life if that’s what I’m male-PMS’ing about.

Fair enough. But next time there’s even the mention of a John and I’m around I would love to hear this story.

It’s just lyrics someone wrote, but I’ll say it starts with “Seconds, hours, so many brains”. GC = Gossip Candy, but I’d really warn about going there, it’s quite….. odd.

LOL! Let’s say, GC = Kradam Fans on steroids!!

I googled and found it. That was you? Good job! I really liked it. A heck of a lot more than the original. Did you ever think of submitting it to Dr Demento? It may be outdated now, but he probably would have played it. It has ZOMBIES!

I just saw Kris’ tweet about Left 4 Dead 2. See, even he likes zombies! :)

I’ve been to GossipCandy before, but only when linked. I guess I never really looked around. Hey, it’s fandom. It’s odd by definition. It’s only bad if it’s creepy.

Maybe I’m really confused’ ¦but I think Kris has gone public with the fact he does not like a song on HIS album and he has made people aware it wasn’t his choice to put the song on the album’ ¦he pretty much had to bow to the producer. Right?

We all know that the Idols don’t really get as much freedom as they would have wished with regards to their debut albums. Kris just vocalized something to that effect. Why are we still surprised?

urrgghhh i’m so late to the party that even alexa chung’s llwd video says “ooops video not available”

nvm guess i can youtube it

I love the song precisely because it’s cheesy! Hahaha Kris’s vocals make you just want to crawl inside the song and cuddle with it hahaha I listened to both Kris’s and Adam’s versions, and Adam’s was overproduced beyond all recognition, and it’s not surprising to me that people gravitated more to Kris’s version. My favorite part of the song has nothing to do with mountains and hurricanes LOL I love the part in the bridge where he just goes, “YEEEEEEAAAAAAHHH, there are nooooo boundrays! There are no bound-rays!” His ‘yeah’ in that part kinda makes you wanna go outside, pump your fists in the air and get into Karate Kid-inspirational-movie-montage mode LOL :D

Did anyone ever get the Chung interview link?

NO, that wasn’t me. But yeah I’ll take the credit for it! :D .

Just kidding, but I’m not really good at changing lyrics. I’m still waiting for someone to write For Your Information because someone put FYI instead of FYE and I found it extremely entertaining.

Also, it is odd, but I like it there, it’s kinda hilarious. I liked “Krisis” and “Adamam” LOL. I also like when they say “(body part) porn” when they show a picture of Kris or Adam with emphasis on the (body part). Like “nose porn”.
