Kris Allen performs “No Boundaries” on the Ellen Degeneres show. The episode of Ellen will air on May 27.

Kris’s acoustic performance of the song, with his lovely phrasing and awesome interpretation skills, make it listenable. Hope he can perform it this way on tour.

Video after the JUMP…

  • GeminiDolly

    That was very nice.

  • galaxygrrl

wow, he made that sound ok. hope adam gets a single soon….oh and allison too

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I really enjoyed the performance. :)

  • primeminister

    Much better. :)

  • linsav

Sounded better, but I am sick to death of acoustic guitar performances already.

  • tierbee

That was actually nice… except deeper and higher and whatever hooey is in those lyrics is just as cringe-worthy as magic rainbows, lol.

I still say he sounds a lot like Keith Urban. And he’s too cute.

  • St.Lucia

damn, that makes it sound like an ALMOST decent song….still not my favorite Idol song and I just really don’t think Adam could have sung this tripe with a straight face.

  • tierbee

    And MJ, I agree…

Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s acoustic performance of the song, with his lovely phrasing and awesome interpretation skills, make it listenable.

I guess it’s a good indicator of your talent if you can make that crap palatable!

  • rfb

I thought that was great. Kris is very talented. I think he will go far.
Can’t wait for his first album.

  • AC

Wow, he learns how to play on guitar really fast!!! Dang, where does he even have the time?

I can’t wait to see him on Ellen! When I clicked on the link previously, it said that it was a performance of Heartless but it played No Boundaries instead. I wonder if he’ll be playing Heartless on the show? =)

  • Sunn

I’d hate to say it, but that didn’t work for me at all. Not kris’ fault. That song is a mountain of horrid to climb in itself.
I think with such terrible lyrics that song really ought never be done acoustically. With out the distraction of strong beat, rhythm and instrumentation all you’re really left with is a lumbering melody, and a verbose lyric with the emotional honesty of a Bollywood movie.

    Just my opinion.

  • http://idolthoughts.today.com/ foxydonna

The song is still awful, although he’s polished it up a bit. It’s so totally wrong for his vocal range and persona. I still say it’s the worst coronation song ever.

  • Tony

No wonder they didn’t allow instruments. He would have been too good.

  • hwc

Wow, he learns how to play on guitar really fast!!!

This is not meant as being negative in any way, but every teenage guitar player in America can strum barre chords. It’s the first thing you learn. An G chord can be the same as a C chord which can be the same as a D chord (to pick an example in the key of G) — they are just played at different frets.

    This part is negative:

That song didn’t work for me either. It’s just a really, really bad song. He should pick something else. “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, anything. That dog just won’t hunt.

  • drea

I’m glad he is getting to do this acoustically. He probably enjoys it more that way, as he has said before that playing and singing helps him connect to his music. I think this video shows that.

  • movin2thabeet

Didn’t work for me. For much of the song, it sounded like Kris was huffing and puffing to catch up to this stinking mess of a freight train. He managed to jump on it occasionally, which was a relief, but I can’t say this was an enjoyable listening experience.

  • jammasta

I agree, he did polish it and make it sound pretty good. Still a lyrical piece of crap, but Kris makes it really listenable. I have his version on my iPod. I hope he does an acoustic version on the tour.

  • KenzTK

    That song didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t work for me either. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a really, really bad song. He should pick something else. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t No Sunshineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Somewhere Over the Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , anything. That dog just wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hunt.

He can’t choose another song. That is HIS single. I’m sure 19e are making him sing it and it is the smart business decision to sing that because it will boost single sales. I’m guessing he will only get a cut of “No Boundaries” sales and not the other songs.

Also, most people I know love this song now that they have heard the recording. I love it as well. Stuck in my head.

  • cookcricket

Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s acoustic performance of the song, with his lovely phrasing and awesome interpretation skills, make it listenable. Hope he can perform it this way on tour.

Yes, and I’m hoping the acoustic version is a video on the Kris’s itunes pass package thingy. To me, he makes is sound as if it were written to be acoustic.

  • chicksineggz

I actually kind of like the song now. (:

  • houstonrufus

Nicely done. Still don’t love the song, but he’s done as much as he could with it. Glad he went acoustic on it.

  • Thea

when is Adam going to see Ellen? She loves him, she will probably invite him!

This song is just ok. Not terrible, but not good at all, and Kris obviously struggles in some parts.
I always ask the question “would someone who never followed AI and hears this song, and this singer, for the first time be impressed enough to want to hear more?”
I don’t think this passes the test.

  • adamisthemanfan

yeah his voice definitely suits this song better I’m really happy Adam doesn’t have to sing it ever again lol when I saw him perform it on the finale I was lie OMG what IS this crap they are making him sing? I was appalled really. Kris does have a nice tone and his performances are very honest and that’s why I think ppl like them. he is very comfortable with just stripping everything doing and the acoustic thing suits him well…I actually didn’t like Tracks of My tears for Adam as much of the OTT stuff because I felt that it was really forced since ha had done ROF the week before but I loved the look and he sang it beautifully. Kudos to both guys for being such gentlemen.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

when is Adam going to see Ellen? She loves him, she will probably invite him!

Ellen stops taping soon–she takes the summer off–so she might miss him.

  • saga

I agree with Thea, this doesn’t pass that test. The vocals are really strained and I get a painful feeling listening. Too bad he can’t perform something he is more comfortable with like Aint no sunshine or Heartless.

  • MayMirabella

I think he did a good job considering the song.

These Finale songs for the winners tend to be rather lame. Actually a few of them have been Ok like A Moment like This and Believe.

Some have speculated that this song was written with Gokey in mind as most of the judges predicted weeks ago that the finale would be Adam and Danny and many thought Danny would win..ie overestimated his votes…and underestimated Chris votes and support.

  • MayMirabella

For some reason, it does sound like a song Gokey would sing and in his range, perhaps?

  • mawmo

I love this song and I think it suits his voice beautifully. I rather hear No Boundaries on the radio than Boom Boom Pow, Waking Up in Vegas, or The Climb.

  • Truthiness

Well that’s a VAST improvement to the song, yes even over his studio version which still sounds like cliched, mostly tuneless, twaddle to me. Not his fault, it’s just a.) the song b.) the mediocre production values of the contestants iTunes work.

I think Kris does a much better job selling this song with this version, than Adam could. But that’s great, because now Adam isn’t stuck singing that song and can sing things he can sell better/connect more to. So win-win for America.

  • http://theinsatiablebrain.wordpress.com/ Lele

Wow. I cannot believe how much better he made that shitty song! I think what actually makes is better is that, while the song is made of cliche, Kris is so genuine as a person and as an artist, that it bleeds to the song and makes a tiny bit more genuine.

This situation definitely reminds me of Cook last year. Pretty much same case.

For the first time, after watching all post-finale articles/interviews/etc.., I’m staring to believe this was the best outcome for all involved. Specially, in the long run.

  • St.Lucia

I give Kris a lot of credit here, because I don’t think this song would sound nearly as good without it being acoustic…this is Kris’s strength he can twist and mold the song, in live settings, to suit him. There probably isn’t much he’s going to be able to change on the recorded track.

I doubt I’ll even like the live track, but this, this isn’t SO BAD that its unlistenable. Kris has a great charisma about him.

With Adam, and I mean this respectively because I love Adam way more than I love Kris, this song would have just sucked. I don’t think the song allowed itself to fit into Adam’s style of singing in anyway and he probably wouldn’t be allowed to jazz it up for a live performance. I just can’t imagine this song, being sung by Adam, as ever being good. Glad he doesn’t have to sing it.

I love Kris when he’s acoustic. There’s just some kind of magic there. He might just grow on me more and more. Not as much as Adam, because Adam is just something incredible, but Kris’s style of music is something I listen to more in my general listening. I respect his talents as a singer songwriter, and I just really hope they don’t mess up with the magic he has. He could be SO marketable if they do it right.

    And I’d probably buy it.

  • annabelina

For some reason, it does sound like a song Gokey would sing and in his range, perhaps?

That’s what I’ve been thinking since the finale when both guys had such trouble with the song. I think that’s why Kara looked so upset when Danny was eliminated … because the song was always meant for Gokey to sing. =/

Kris did a decent job with the song. I love just listening to his phrasing and interpretation, but I still won’t buy the song. Sorry Kris! I’ll totally buy your album the day it comes out (which, by default, will probably mean I’ll have the song anyway).

  • BootStar

I don’t know who this crappy song was written for, but I do think it suits Kris much moreso than Adam (count your blessings, boychick!). It reminds me of a Rascal Flatts-type song.

Personally, I would love to see Kris go the alt-country route, since he’s really an acoustic/folk rocker at heart. Don’t know if there are any country stations that play that kind of music. We only have one country music station here in Philly, and it’s all RF, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift commercial pop-country. And of course Keith Urban, so I’m guessing that’s the direction they’ll push Kris in. Which I think is probably the smart thing.

And I, personally, never get tired of acoustic guitars! :mrgreen_wp:

  • kansasfemale

It’s amazing how differently he took that song compared to Adam’s Studio version.

His rendition was a lovely feel-good sway type of interpretation. Adam’s is a power filled emotional passionate interpretation.

I much prefer both of their Studio Versions over the performances that night.

……….and I shudder to hear me say this…but perhaps since both young men are able to pull off such dramatically different interpretations in their Studio versions….it could be a favorable commentary on the song-writer’s skills.???

    maybe??

anyway….take a listen to Adam’s interpretation on the Studio version and see if you don’t agree……..

  • jlc

The song is crap, but what struck me as he got started, was how much he sounds like David Cook (at the beginning of the song)–and that is nuttin’ but good!

  • JJ123

awww…he did awesome!!! I absolutely hated this song a couple days ago and now I’m playing it on purpose…it just got stuck in my head!! Guess that’s why people are buying it. I can’t wait to see the actual show, hope he gets a good interview!!

I always thought that the 2nd and 3rd place people got kind of a raw deal because they miss out on a lot of press due to the TV season ending. Ellen will most definitely have Adam on when it counts…during his album release hoopla.

  • kansasfemale

    St.Lucia

go out on the tube to listen to Adam’s Studio version, I bet you’ll go to itunes and download it ;)

  • St.Lucia

go out on the tube to listen to Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Studio version, I bet youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll go to itunes and download it ;)

    Really? *runs to youtube*

ETA: Still hate it, but you are right, I will download it, because it is one more Adam song I’ll have on my ipod…. I just will skip it more than some others.

The song has “Adam” moments, but overall a load of tripe. Hate Kris’s studio version too, but I did like the acoustic SO MUCH more.

Not either of their faults, the song just absolutely sucks. I think the studio version sounds nothing like what I expect Kris or Adam to make.

  • Laurie

Congratulations Kris! You made this song sound very beautiful and believable! I was quite impressed with this rendition, although I haven’t heard the one up on itunes yet. Own your talent Kris – you earned this!

  • Pixie Baker

Ok, I really tried but I really dislike this song……………..too many words and it is soooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. Sorry, Kris….I hope you can get away from singing this soon………….

  • weese

Granted that was probably the best that could be done with that song but I still hate it. Ouch, it just isn’t singable.

  • savgal

Thought it was great! Even though he “has to” sing it, he is totally invested, IMO. Love that he turned it into an acoustic, think it suits him much better. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the show, too.

  • sunchick

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d hate to say it, but that didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t work for me at all. Not krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ fault. That song is a mountain of horrid to climb in itself.

Yeah, sadly, ditto. No fault of Kris’s, but stripping it down doesn’t do a whole lot for the song. Not much could, though. The beginning was nice, but when he got to the higher deeper part it made me laugh. It sounded a little cartoonish in that spot. I did love how committed he was, though. I just wish I liked it better. I hope they let him sing Heartless at some of these appearances. And, still adorable.

  • BootStar

Okay, Kris most definitely does NOT want to go the country route!

Q: After you dueted with Keith Urban (on the finale), are you thinking about adding a county vibe to your album?

A: I was actually afraid of that. I don’t feel like I would go that country way. That’s not my type of music, and that’s not the feeling I want in my album. But we had a great time together. He’s a great guy and I respect him so much as an artist and as a musician.

    (From here.)

  • skylight1219

I think Kris put a lot of emotion into this song, much more so than Adam did, and that’s one reason why he won. It just wasn’t a believable song with Adam doing it. He hated it as much as Kris did (even though he said differently) and it showed on Tuesday night.

It’s starting to grow on me. Kris is so talented. Kudos to him for taking a lemon and making lemonade.

  • Dlynne

I can listen to it now without cringing so that’s an improvement. He sounds great. I do love his voice and his phrasing. Perhaps he’ll make it sound better as time goes on like Cook did with his. I STILL hear that awful song on the radio. Ugh.

Let me just say how happy I am that Adam does not have to sing it.

  • KrisFan

The woman who is the voice coach on American Idol said in an interview that in rehearsal on Tuesday Kris did a great job on Boundaries. Then during the final, she said she could hear him running out of steam.

I thought he performed it much better the night he won.

On the one hand, I think it’s a piece of crap. And I studied music for 14 years. On the other hand, I found myself HUMMING the damn thing on Thursday morning.

And this version is even better. He actually gives this melody-less song a melody. So now I’m humming it again.

And an earlier poster is correct. He has no say about whether he performs this. It’s all contractual. I do hope, however, they will let him stick with the acoustic version. That might very well happen because shows like Ellen on which he will appear don’t have huge bands or orchestras.

Did anyone listen to his studio version of Boundaries? It’s actually pretty well done, too.

I say based on this, the kid indeed has talent. There are plenty of major singers who could not sing this.

  • KrisFan

In one of his recent interviews, Kris was asked what Adam and he were saying to each other as they hugged, etc., after Kris’s name was announced. He said at one point Adam leaned down and said: Good. Now YOU have to sing that song.

    LOL.

I have a feeling that Kris didn’t intend to slip up and say that. (And I have a feeling AI has asked him to be careful in his interviews. But that fact is, Kara, the truth hurts!)

  • TKat

This is not meant as being negative in any way, but every teenage guitar player in America can strum barre chords. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the first thing you learn. I agree. And I do not mean it in a negative way either. Within the “Idol bubble”, Kris is a good, not great, guitarist and pianist. But in the bigger music world and to musicians, he’s not really outstanding.

And when I think about all the incredibly talented indie singer-songwriters who can’t get a break, I think that Kris is very lucky to have been on AmIdol and given the opportunity to have people get to know how nice he is and build a large, loyal fan base that will help him get essential radio airplay.

  • KrisFan

But that’s sort of the point about Kris. He’s been doing this for years, playing in bars and clubs, getting little attention and making no money. He’s the perfect example of an indie singer-songwriter who decided to take the plunge, put himself out there and see what happened.

  • Adamdebomb

“Sounded better, but I am sick to death of acoustic guitar performances already.”

Link: I know what you mean. Tracy Chapman was about the last time I really enjoyed this.

  • ross

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t feel like I would go that country way. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not my type of music, and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not the feeling I want in my album

    Amen to that!

Within the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol bubbleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , Kris is a good, not great, guitarist and pianist. But in the bigger music world and to musicians, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not really outstanding.

Quote from Jason Mraz: “Last week, I saw a Kris Allen performance, because, you know, he keeps getting referred to as Jason Mraz-y. So I checked it out; I thought he was fantastic. He holds his instruments well; he’s really with them.”

I don’t know whether Kris is an outstanding guitar or piano player, I don’t think it matters, he’s primarily a singer. Let’s say he plays guitar better than anyone else in the top 13, anyhow.

  • gingerly

I flove acoustic guitar performances. I’ll never get tired of them. While I’m impressed what Kris did with this disaster of a song, I happen to think nobody would make it through auditioning on this song. It sucks that hard. I’ve not heard the studio versions, and I didn’t stick around to hear it at the finale (I was off cavorting), this is 100 times better than what Kris did during the contest, and Adam, well I couldn’t find a melody in what he did on the stage if you paid me. I’m going to try my best to never hear it again…

  • saga

Ugh, Kris is not primary a singer to me, he needs the whole package to work and this song shows it. The vocals are very strained and he would probably not pass the idol auditions with this singing.

  • awilliams

Yeah the song is better sung this way but its still a sappy song and I”m sooo tired of these sappy inspirational songs on the radio. If I want to hear something like that I can go listen to Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music (?) or When You Walk Through a Storm from Carousel. Much better tunes and lyrics.

  • DCRocksMySocks

He is finally showing off those arms of his! They are nice! I love this interpretation of the song; makes it listenable!

  • amiroamor

Yeah, I saw someone posted on youtube the morning after Kradam sang this song.

I actually liked this song after hearing it twice (after finale night). Liked the studio version, and going acoustic is like an icing on the cake.

  • RemusL

And when I think about all the incredibly talented indie singer-songwriters who canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get a break, I think that Kris is very lucky to have been on AmIdol and given the opportunity to have people get to know how nice he is and build a large, loyal fan base that will help him get essential radio airplay.

TKat, of course he’s lucky. Adam is lucky too. There are a lot of great voices on Broadway and off-Broadway who may never get beyond “ensemble” or “swing”, let alone become a successful recording artist. Adam, despite his amazing vocal skills, was still only an understudy.

To make it in the entertainment business, luck often matters more than talent and dedication.

  • LakesideUK

    *shudders*

If I never hear that song again it will be too soon. Sorry, Kara.

  • RemusL

In one of his recent interviews, Kris was asked what Adam and he were saying to each other as they hugged, etc., after Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name was announced. He said at one point Adam leaned down and said: Good. Now YOU have to sing that song.

KrisFan, which interview was that? Is it on video somewhere?

As for that crappy song, I’m also finding it hard to get it completely out of my head, especially after hearing Kris’ acoustic version.

  • hwc

If anything, “street cred” means even more in the singer/songwriter genre than it does for “rawkers”. The Ryan Adams – Jeff Tweedy – Ray LaMontaigne – Jack White indie songwriter crowd is going to be a tough nut to crack for an American Idol. And their CD sales aren’t enough to get the 19E boys to even bother.

My guess is that 19E will whip up a batch of mid-tempo DAUGHTRY songs, produce them with some acoustic guitars, and shoot for some top-40 traction.

PS: It was big mistake to dis “country”. The heart of the singer-songwriter scene today (and really one of the few creative slices of the music industry) is what is loosely described as “alt-country”. It’s primarily a fusion of former punkers an traditional American singer-songwriter genres.

  • skylight1219

Kris won. He HAS to sing that song. End of story!

  • TKat

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know whether Kris is an outstanding guitar or piano player, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it matters, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s primarily a singer. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s say he plays guitar better than anyone else in the top 13, anyhow.

It’s interesting to me that Jason Mraz used the expression “holds his instrument well.” I’m not sure what that means. And I won’t try to read Jason’s mind.

He is certainly better with a guitar than the piano. IMO in the performances we saw he used the piano more as a prop, then an integral part of his performance. And in the 3 performance finale effectively used the piano, guitar, unaccompanied vocal to break up the monotony of the night.

In any case, I was not much of a Matt fan, but actually Matt was the best musican of the AI8 Top 13. And I think Scott was not far behind.

  • hypertwink

Adam is lucky too. There are a lot of great voices on Broadway and off-Broadway who may never get beyond à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ensembleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“swingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , let alone become a successful recording artist. Adam, despite his amazing vocal skills, was still only an understudy.

True dat. Everyone of the Top 13 are lucky they were picked because it exposed them to a whole lot more people, Some get contracts, some will get more traffic into their shows when they go back home, and one gets to be an American Idol. But at this point, it all goes back to zero. Not every American Idol succeeds like Kelly or Carrie and not every supposed shock boot gets to thumb his nose at everyone like Daughtry but they can try.

  • oceana

I’ll never get tired of acoustic or mellow music. Probably most of my music library is on the mellow side. So it’s very likely that I’ll like what Kris puts out. I’ll definitely check it out.

  • hwc

Matt? Was he the kid with the hat? He showed some promise early, but it’s really hard to be good at that kind of music when you’ve listened to too much Justin Timberlake. It’s like listening to Brittney.

I agree that he was probably the best musician of the bunch — and in a crowded field of mellow ballad crooners, maybe the best signer of that genre, too. Just not much of a performer.

  • ShariG

Well I guess in a nut shell that is kind of the difference between the Adam fans and the Kris fans, although many, many people manage to be both. I love acoustic. I, too, never get tired of it when the guitar player is good and the singer is awesome. Beautiful. It takes the magic of Kris Allen to make this cheesy song sound good. Thanks so much for posting the video, MJ.

  • mitchellvii

I just made peace with Adam NOT winning Idol – he doesn’t have to sing this steaming pile.

  • ShariG

Hey, Gingerly, do you recognize the piano player? He is the same one that went on the press gig with David Cook last year when he struggled with Magic Rainbows on every talk show. I actually downloaded Kris’s version of this song and it was really lovely. No doubt he is going to get really sick of this song before it is over. I wish he could sing Falling Slowly or To Make You Love Me, or even better Heartless on some of these shows.

  • JenG

ughhhhh. Some how the song is worse acoustically, I couldn’t even listen to 20 seconds of it. I’m sorry you have to sing that Kris. :(

edit: I just have to add, I love acoustic versions of songs. And I love Kris. But this song is utter crap. At least David Cook’s last year was listenable and catchy.

It’s really too bad he can’t play “Ain’t No Sunshine” or “Heartless”

  • http://youtube.com/user/ConcertCameraCat Sparkles

I didn’t really like the song at first. It was just so sad. All about the bad economy & people losing their jobs because there are no foundries. That’s just really depressing. Then, of course I realized it was no “boundaries.” What the hell does that mean? Has there ever been a song with the word boundaries in it? If so, there can’t be many. There’s probably a reason for that Kara. Destiny I can understand. Rainbows I get. Unicorns ain’t no stranger to me. But boundaries?
That being said, I hope he can do this version on tour. But I kind of doubt if he will be allowed to. They gotta keep selling those downloads so he’ll probably have to do the original version.

  • PhoebeS

edit: adam fans are not the topic of this thread. FOLLOW MY GUIDELINES

  • gingerly

Yep Shari, I think his name is something like Michael Orland? I think he’s one of the music mentors on AI. Somebody has to know his name. David didn’t usually sing MR. He sang TWIK on Ellen and many other performances, but if he sang two MR was always one of them. Maybe they are sticking it to Kris and making him sing this because they’re pissy that he won….hard to know.

  • anemicandholding

Actually, I believe that Cook sang The World I Know for only the first two or three TV appearances, then he began to sing Rainbows everywhere he went. Sometimes if he was allowed to sing 2 songs (Leno, Wal-Mart) he put in one of his own choices, but Rainbows was almost obligatory. It seems TPTB put pressure on him at a certain point to sing the song instead of the stuff he preferred, and may have put pressure on Kris from the beginning. I don’t think it has anything to do with who they like more.

Daughtry’s a nice counter-example to bring up, but not every beloved runner-up or lower-tiered contestant is treated that way. All of these same conspiracy theories came up last year with Archie and none of them panned out.

  • jz

    Great performance, shiiittttyyyyy lyrics.

    ILU Kris. :)

  • taks

It makes sense to have Kris sing No Boundaries as much as possible to promote sales and radio airplay. As awful as the song may or may not be, it is his first single and it is in his best interest to get it to sell well.

    Regarding Kris and instruments:
In some interview (Idol Tonight?), Kris said he has been playing the guitar for a while (I think he said since he was 13 but I could be totally wrong) and picked up the piano a little over a year ago. Knowing that, I’m actually insanely impressed with his piano skills. I took lessons for 10 years and though I’m not great myself I can tell that he does have some natural aptitude for the piano.

His guitar skills far outstrip his piano skills though. And Matt/Scott are both better on the piano than Kris.

  • hwc

Probably most of my music library is on the mellow side.

It’s almost all I listen to day in and day out, but I’m very picky. For example, here’s one from perhaps the best songwriter of a generation. His songs have been recorded by Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, and Sir Elton John.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKaF5UxDxxQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H66wBFQAqPU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jEFqQx8r2U

When Elton John introduced him to Bob Dylan, the first thing Dylan said is, “So what the [eff] is a winding wheel, anyway?” asking him about the lyrics of a song on his first album. Adams said that all he could think is, hey wait a minute YOU are asking what a song means — I should be asking you!”

  • May

after Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name was announced. He said at one point Adam leaned down and said: Good. Now YOU have to sing that song.

Haha…I figured that’s what Adam was saying! Good thing his mike was off. Anyway, I think the acoustic version sounds better than any live version I’ve heard so far from either guy. I do remember DC performing TWIK a few times and even My Hero once, so I hope they won’t make Kris sing this everywhere he goes.

  • houstonrufus

That is definitely Michael Orland. He’s a talented, bright guy. He’s one of the music arrangers on Idol, right? Just know about him because he was a big fan of Archie, so I remember reading about him in articles. He appeared with the Davids last year when they were making the talk show rounds after the finale.

I, too, love acoustic music, guitar, piano. I love all kinds of music, but I have a soft spot for that kind of music. Grew up in Texas, so maybe it’s my childhood of listening to nothing but country and folk. I’m really glad Kris performed this the way he did, made it his own. I still think the song is blah, and it looks like torture to sing.

  • KrisAllen1

If Adam really said that then he’s not the person i thought he was.Its really inmature for Adam to say that.I would like to see Adam improve NB because i dont think he could if he won.I lost my adam love after i heard what he said to Kris.

  • ross

Ugh, Kris is not primary a singer to me, he needs the whole package to work and this song shows it. The vocals are very strained and he would probably not pass the idol auditions with this singing.

What kind of singing do you think he did do in his Idol auditions? After all, they didn’t send him to Hollywood because he played instruments.

Whatever, it seems to me Kris has done pretty well as “just” a singer with his iTunes performances and his Idol performances of Falling Slowly and To Make You Feel My Love.

This isn’t the best song for his voice. But I think in this version he’s reached a truce with it. He isn’t fighting it any more, and it isn’t fighting him. I actually enjoyed him singing it for the first time, here. To me one of his greatest gifts is to sincerely mean a song. I don’t think that can be taught.

  • skylight1219

Here’s a video of an interview with Kris that I don’t think has been posted. If so, then MJ can delete it.

I find it amusing that so many of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fans are refusing to download Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of the song so that his association with it can become a dim and distant memory.

I downloaded Adam’s version, got about halfway through it, hit STOP and dragged it to the trash can. It’s just a horrible song. Life is too short. Kind of like Open Toes, another strong effort from Kara DIoguardi.

  • gingerly

I don’t think it was immature for Adam to say that at all. I’m not a fan of his music, but I think Adam is an awesome dude. I think the song is definitely one they joked about (it’s indeed a joke, after all). I don’t see it as anything to take seriously at all. Yeah, it pains me too to have to hear this song, but regardless of what some of the OTT Adam fans want to believe, this isn’t going to make or break Kris’ career.

  • hwc

I lost my adam love after i heard what he said to Kris.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that, with a user name like KrisAllen1, you probably lost your adam love a little before then!

    It’s all good.

  • Kirsten

Yep Shari, I think his name is something like Michael Orland? I think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s one of the music mentors on AI. Somebody has to know his name.

Yep, that’s him. He used to also do the piano playing for the early rounds of Idol (before they realized that many songs (e.g. Pop/Rock songs) sound kind of off without more than just a piano tinkling along with them and so they started having a small band).

Michael also helps the kids to arrange the songs. Adam gave a shout out on the show for helping him to arrange one of his songs.

  • gingerly

Funny houstonrufus, I learned about Michael Orland (wasn’t sure of his name a year later because I’m old like that) because when David Cook sang TWIK on Ellen, at the end Michael Orland said “sweet” and I had to agree and thought he was very insightful…The man knows good music :clap_tb:

We will only suffer so much for our Idol, and that song is too much. :D

ETA: In the interest of full disclosure I must confess I have downloaded Adam’s version of the song, I prefer it to Kris’ version, a gesture of moral as well of financial support. But I refuse to put it on my preferred playlist. :)

  • houstonrufus

Yeah, gingerly, I think Michael Orland knows his stuff. I’ve always liked whatever I’ve read about him.

  • hollygo9

I love how Kris can inject a soul into even the most soulless piece of dreck. It gives me hope for his future. Magic Hurricain for the win.

  • erinnthered

I guess Mythbusters was correct. You can polish shit…sort of. That really is a terrible song, and it just shows Kris’ talent that he can even make it palatable. I think I might actually enjoy it if he performs it like this on tour…the phrasing/ melody anyway. The lyrics are still rediculous.

Sounded better, but I am sick to death of acoustic guitar performances already.

Hey, as long as he never busts out Redemption Song it’s all good. I could go a lifetime without hearing another guy w/ guitar play that song.

To make it in the entertainment business, luck often matters more than talent and dedication.

So very true. I’ve seen some very talented people lose out. Kris got very lucky, but he got lucky because he took a risk. He seems like he likes to take risks with his music, and I think that dramatically increases your chances of getting lucky.

  • useless

He’s done the best he could with the material *blech* and it doesn’t sound half as bad. I still won’t download it, tho.

  • lavender1960

The reality is that NB song besides the worst lyrics ever has too many words with the way the phrasing or music has been structured, both Adam and Kris had trouble getting in all those words in time to the music. They aren’t rappers who can squeeze in 100 words in 10 seconds.

But having 2 Idol Winners in a row that play guitar is they have managed to improve absolute schlock at least live though Cook will not perform TOML live anymore I believe and can’t say I blame him.

Idol came down to do you prefer Liberace or Billy Joel, do you prefer Freddie Mercury or James Taylor, do you prefer Celine Dion or Norah Jones. You can’t MAKE people like one kind of music or performance style over another bottomline.

Me, I love all guitar – acoustic, electric, electric acoustic, bass, lead, rhythym, funk guitar, some dobro or mandolin for some unqiue flavouring, and the more guitars in a band the better – no such thing as too much guitar or cowbell, bwah.

The reality is it is a lot easier for even rock bands to do their songs acoustically in the promotional setting and it is a testament to how well a song is crafted and an artist’s talent when you can pull off rock songs acoustically. Green Day has done it and many others do it. I love it myself. Sure beats lip synching and backing tracks.

  • lavender1960

Well one could say the same thing about Adam to the extent that he must have realized his career in musical theatre wasn’t getting him where he wanted to go quickly enough either. Usually exceptional talent rises to the top pretty quickly in musical theatre.

So Mr. Lambert is getting the exact same advantages as Kris and now he can go back to musical theatre, if he wishes, and write his own ticket which likely might not have ever happened without Idol.

  • ettacandy

Sounds infinitely better scaled back. I would remove the piano too.

Kris’ phrasing / instincts are really fabulous. This is a shiteous song that sounds darn good thanks to Kris.

  • ordinarygirl09

This is how the song was originally made by Kara.

and Adam and Kris could choose to switch it up on the finale and that is why they sounded different.

its not a bad song at all

  • mk88

If you watched the post performance interview where the reporters asked their opinion regarding the song – Kris was speechless/laughing before Adam came up with a PC answer. I had the feeling in private – they were exchanging their not so stellar opinion on that song. Hehehe

  • Valentin432

This song is just pure crap as any other AI original song.
As different as Kris and Adam’s versions are, neither works for me, but I am sure they will get huge sells since both fanbase would make a case to buy their version of the song.

  • kerfuffle

I own both studio versions and well as both videos. As I said earlier, the thing is growing on me. (Save yourselves! Run! Get out while there’s still time … lol)

  • BootStar

I don’t know how anybody could fault either Adam or Kris for not wanting to sing that song. It’s a genuine consolation prize to the runner up NOT to have to sing it! They both have been very diplomatic, but can you imagine anyone would have voted for either of them if they actually thought that was a good song?

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really like the song at first. It was just so sad. All about the bad economy & people losing their jobs because there are no foundries. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just really depressing. Then, of course I realized it was no à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“boundaries.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ What the hell does that mean? Has there ever been a song with the word boundaries in it? If so, there canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be many. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s probably a reason for that Kara. Destiny I can understand. Rainbows I get. Unicorns ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t no stranger to me. But boundaries?

    :lol_tb:

I thought the same thing when I heard it the first time. Boundaries? Can you imagine the Eagles singing “Take it to the boundary one more time!”

  • luckeee55

Yeah the song is better sung this way but its still a sappy song and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ m sooo tired of these sappy inspirational songs on the radio. If I want to hear something like that I can go listen to Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music (?) or When You Walk Through a Storm from Carousel. Much better tunes and lyrics.

I wonder what radio stations play in your area. I don’t hear anything remotely inspirational on my CHR or HAC stations. Boom Boom Pow does not inspire me lol.

  • sanrio76

I really like this version as well as the studio version. I’d download the single if it was available on Amazon. So far its only on iTunes. : (

  • mawmo

The interview in Fox LA Thursday morning, Kris and Adam reenacted the winning moment. Adam shook Kris and said, “You did it!” and it was Kris who said “I got to sing that song!” Funny stuff.

  • colette

My guess is that 19E will whip up a batch of mid-tempo DAUGHTRY songs, produce them with some acoustic guitars, and shoot for some top-40 traction.

    Ick, please Lordy no!

I’ve always wondered about what goes on in the studio with the Idols. I know Bo Bice hated what they gave him. But I think some of the others had some control, but kinda got lost in the haze. anyone have real information out there, rather than conjecture?

for instance, I think both Taylor and Cookie kind of got swept up in all the bells and whistles their multiple producers and co-writers were offering, and in the push to get some “product” out there asap. There seems to be a LOT of pressure to do something quick, and I hope that Kris holds onto his own identity and sticks to his own style. Somehow I think he will, just that quiet fortitude in action.

meanwhile, did anyone see the story in a British paper with Simon Cowell talking about his dark moods — which sound a lot to me like clinical depressions? He says he goes days at a time wanting to just hide in his house and not talk to anybody, and he realizes something isn’t right. Hmmm….this could explain a lot…..

  • chrgi

Ugh, Kris is not primary a singer to me, he needs the whole package to work and this song shows it. The vocals are very strained and he would probably not pass the idol auditions with this singing.

:lol_wp: You do know that you can’t win American Idol without auditioning, right?

I think slowly but surely Kris is making this song his own and it is sounding much better. I think the problem was we had to hear Adam sing it first and I think what happened was he tried to make it his own and sort of veered off the melody. Which doesn’t make sense in a song no one has ever heard before. So the first impression was not the best.

But Kris managed to uncover the original melody (even in his first live performance really, I mean sometimes he couldn’t hit all the notes but at least you could tell they were there) and it’s actually not that bad. Very easy to get stuck in your head. And I think his voice was in fine form. I’m not sure where people are hearing strain in his voice at all.

  • chicksineggz

This is how the song was originally made by Kara.

and Adam and Kris could choose to switch it up on the finale and that is why they sounded different.

its not a bad song at all

How do you know this? Uhh, well I know they definitely weren’t allowed to use instruments. And I heard they barely got any time to learn this song, so I don’t think there was much rearranging.

  • Cakenbake

There is not much you can do with that terrible song, but Kris did a good job.

That song will go as one of the most worst finale AI songs created.

Kara in the future you owe that boy a better song because that one is crappy…lol

  • hwc

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve always wondered about what goes on in the studio with the Idols.

DAUGHTRY just pretty much showed up and they said, “Hey kid, here are the finished backing tracks by ‘your band’, now lay down the vocals”. That would be the standard way an Idol album is done. It can be successful to the extent that the Idol fits a particular cookie cutter radio formula to a “T”. That’s why all the DAUGHTRY stuff sounds just like Nickleback or whatever.

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and DAUGHTRY are probably the best examples. Their first albums were all successful because they were basically formula factory-made albums — kind of like moving into a mobile home. All three were, of course, competent to excellent singers well suited to the formula genre (teen pop, whitebread country, and top-40 “wallet chain” rawk, dude, respectively).

It’s conceptually not that much different than the way Motown could take just about any singer off the street and plug them into a backing track from the legendary Motown house band. Of course, they also had house writers like Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, who were — how can I put this gently — a cut above Kara Dioguardi.

  • http://www.rpattzproject.com/ kerfuffle

I’m actually beginning to feel I may owe Kara an apology. Maybe the song isn’t as craptastic as I first thought. It just has a hard melody to get right, and since it was so new, the idols didn’t get a chance to get it figured out, along with everything else they had to do that last week. It also does have a heck of a lot of words that need to be crammed into a very short space of singing. (My knowledge of musical terminology is astonishing! :blink_tb:)

  • RemusL

chrgi, Kris WAS straining for the high notes the first time he sang “No Boundaries” on AI. On finale night, it didn’t seem as strained to me. Since the key was the same, the only conclusion I can make is that his voice was tiring on the previous night.

  • Cindyy

I do like “No Boundaries” much better this way that Kris sang it.
    (:
Still not my favorite winners single, though. (can’t top magic rainbow. :) )

But I would love Kris to sing it like this on tour!
    Please, Kris?? ;)

  • KrisAllen1

Kara should never write a single for kris or adam or even allison. They derserve the best not the worst.I would like to see her write for Danny’s album though because the thought of that is funny.

  • virgo03v

Kind of like Open Toes, another strong effort from Kara DIoguardi.

Kara wrote Open Toes??? LOL Wow……. that was even worst than No Boundaries and I didn’t think it was possible to write something worst than NB!

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s interesting to me that Jason Mraz used the expression à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“holds his instrument well.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure what that means. And I wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t try to read Jasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mind.

TKat: I’m not sure if you’re still here or not, but I wanted to give some clarification on this comment. My husband plays, has for years and knows the lingo. This was truly a high compliment. It means something like a part of his personality and his interpretation of the song. (ie. Keith Urban holds his instrument well, Johnny Cash held his instrument well, etc.). It’s a part of who they are as an artist. Hubby would be in heaven if Jason Mraz said something like that about him.

  • lydia

That song is really craptatastic. Kris acoustic makes it infinitely better but it still sucks. I give up trying to predict pop or AC success however. Cookie sang “Magic Rainbow” with enough conviction to make me enjoy the song when I hear it, though I would never seek it out. Kris actually is impressing me more and more post Idol. The 3 of his tracks I down-loaded from I-Tunes are really excellent and in high rotation in my I-pod.

What about “Toe Boundaries?” Sounds like a hit to me. Get on that pronto, Kara.

  • TKat

Hey all you all, I was not trying to start a firestorm. So indulge me with a few responses and a somewhat long post:

TKat, of course heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lucky.

Of course Adam is lucky, too. But I was trying to write a comment about Kris — really focused on Kris. Why can’t we stop trying to validate Kris’ talent by comparing his to Adam? I really appreciate Kris’ talent, like him and wish him the best. BUT I think he has picked a very hard path if he in interested in pursuing the alt. rock/pop singer-songwriter market. And I don’t think that Kris should have dissed Country music — it is the #1 genre in America. Even Bon Jovi is doing Country music. Anywhay, it’s just my opinion. And it really doesn’t matter very much.

TKat: Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still here or not, but I wanted to give some clarification on this comment. My husband plays, has for years and knows the lingo. This was truly a high compliment. It means something like a part of his personality and his interpretation of the song. (ie. Keith Urban holds his instrument well, Johnny Cash held his instrument well, etc.). Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a part of who they are as an artist. Hubby would be in heaven if Jason Mraz said something like that about him.

This expression struck me as an odd phrase to use. In the indie music world this expression is also used to describe someone who is comfortable with his/her instrument, not necessary a great musician. I used to be a professional musician then spent a number of years in the entertainment business (Marketing/PR) before I came to my senses and decided I wanted to live past 40 — I don’t know much but I do recognize post-event PR spin when I hear it. Every post Idol season is the same — they get a bunch of celebraties to spin after the event. Frankly, they are doing as much of it about Adam as Kris. And some for Alison.

Also, IMO the guitar is OK and Kris looks great with it. Kris’ piano playing, on the other hand, IMMHO does not add anything except to separate him from the audience — and I do not find it to be inspiring.

I think slowly but surely Kris is making this song his own and it is sounding much better. I think the problem was we had to hear Adam sing it first and I think what happened was he tried to make it his own and sort of veered off the melody. Which doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make sense in a song no one has ever heard before. So the first impression was not the best.

“No Boundaries” is a hack piece of crap. I am inpressed that Kris can do anything with it. But please don’t blame Adam for this piece of crap that Kris has to sing. And, since none of us have ever seen the original composition, who knows what the original melody was. Bootstar said it better than I ever could:

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know how anybody could fault either Adam or Kris for not wanting to sing that song. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a genuine consolation prize to the runner up NOT to have to sing it!

And, finally, hwc, really insightful comments about what 19E does with their post Idol records. Ditto.

It’s a mileage thing. For me Kris Allen is the maker of candy-colored heart-shaped lava bombs of squee. Me and Jamie Foxx be swooning when Kris be crooning.

  • gingerly

And I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that Kris should have dissed Country music.

I don’t know that saying a genre isn’t the direction you see yourself going is dissing it. I don’t think that he said he’d never ever do country music. I don’t believe that it’s his main focus nor does he want to be cast as a country singer on his first album. It’s as bad as people who said Adam was dissing country music for the Grand Ole Opry comment.

  • Michelle

Well, I think he sang it beautifully. Is the song the best song EVAR? of course not, but Kris’ version is growing on me. And I blame tptb more for the sap and lyrics, Kris mentioned something about there being certain stipulations (basically a formula) they put on these coronation songs. For all the hate on kara she does know how to write a decent pop song (she cowrote on Kelly’s latest single for example).

FWIW the vid was mistakenly labeled with a blurb about “Heartless” over at Ellen’s site, so he may be performing that as well (or they taped it for a later date.)

BUT I think he has picked a very hard path if he in interested in pursuing the alt. rock/pop singer-songwriter market. And I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that Kris should have dissed Country music à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it is the #1 genre in America.

I don’t see why it would be so hard? pop singer-songwriter is a hot genre right now, it gets radio play, and Kris now has major label support behind him for his effort. They haven’t had an Idol of his type yet, which may work in his favor cause they like diversity in their stable and it’s one more genre for them to try to take over. And I don’t think Kris was “dissing” country at all, he was very complimentary to Keith Urban and said they had fun on the song. But it just isn’t his genre. It would be like forcing Carrie to do pop rather than country (which amazingly, I heard they actually tried to do to her.) It just wouldn’t be true.

  • hollygo9

And I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that Kris should have dissed Country music.

He didn’t diss Country. I would have but I didn’t think he did. Would it have been a diss if Carrie Underwood had said she didn’t see herself as a rap artist?

  • TKat

I was harsh in the use of the word “diss” related to Kris and Country music. Here’s his exact quote:

“I don’t feel like I would go that country way. That’s not my type of music and that’s not the feeling that I want on my album.”

I like Country music and don’t have any problem with it. And I was surprised the Kris said it was not “his kind of music”. I also like Rap/Hip Hop.

Would it have been a diss if Carrie Underwood had said she didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see herself as a rap artist?

I think a better comparison would be if Carrie Underwood had said that AC was not her type of music.

  • ross

Thanks for explaining that. I posted that quote but I wasn’t sure what that part meant.

  • ross

Sorry for the double-post but I just wanted to post the full quote from Mraz:

I did see the [Top 36] group performance of “I’m Yours.” I didn’t think my song could be embraced in this forum, and at that scale. I was really moved. It was inspiring! I haven’t really seen this season. Last week, I saw a Kris Allen performance, because, you know, he keeps getting referred to as Jason Mraz-y. So I checked it out; I thought he was fantastic. He holds his instruments well; he’s really with them.

Heh, now the “Heartless” performance has been posted at Ellen’s site:

Kara should never write a single for kris or adam or even allison. They derserve the best not the worst.I would like to see her write for Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album though because the thought of that is funny.

KrisAllen1, interesting you should say that because I thought Kara DID write “No Boundaries” with someone like Danny in mind. Maybe that was why she was SOOOO upset at Danny’s elimination.

  • elephant1212

edit: this has been posted already in another thread

  • cookcricket

Thanks for explaining that. I posted that quote but I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sure what that part meant.

You’re welcome! Also, I think being comfortable with the instrument is a part of it as TKat pointed out, but there’s a lot more to it than that.

  • colette

    oooh

    the “Heartless” is good

I think Kris will really rise to the occasion

He’s a bright guy, he often says it’s all about the music for him, and I think he’s going to work hard to show what he’s got and try to move people with his music

We can take it apart note for note, and that’s not unexpected for an Idol winner

But I think just letting yourself get swept up into what he’s singing is also very, very nice….

  • skylight1219

Oh lands. Kara is writing a song or songs with Jason Castro on his album. Oh, my dear sweet Jason, be afraid, be very afraid!

  • holeighannie

Oh lands. Kara is writing a song or songs with Jason Castro on his album. Oh, my dear sweet Jason, be afraid, be very afraid!

Oh nooo, I had forgotten about that until you mentioned it! Back when that vlog came out we didn’t know how bad her worst song could be…I’m just going to hope that just because they’re writing together doesn’t mean her song makes the CD. Of course, it could be one of her great songs (like “I Do Not Hook Up”, which I love). But IDK if I’m willing to take that chance, haha.

  • chrgi

chrgi, Kris WAS straining for the high notes the first time he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No Boundariesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on AI. On finale night, it didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem as strained to me. Since the key was the same, the only conclusion I can make is that his voice was tiring on the previous night.

Oh I thought people were referring to the the Ellen performance. I agree with you, Kris was not hitting those notes when he sang it the first time, but I remember agreeing with Randy’s assessment of that. I think I read in an article that both idols were just tired and they couldn’t hear all that well.

I just found this awesome tribute a fan created for Kris on another Website.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS4K_I_hjKA

Kris was my favorite contestant this year and I am so happy that he won. However, I am with a lot of you, originally I hated this song, but the more I hear Kris singing it, the more I like it. The above video just made me flove the song..

  • Lu

It sounded better than it did on AI but it still is a crappy song.

  • jersey

I’m not sure if people realize this but MJ has a link at the top of her page, in the purple banner, to Idol Appearances. She has alot of information listed there.

The acoustic version of this song makes it more palatable but I’m still not a fan of the song. I am a fan of the singer, though!

  • MayMirabella

The more I hear Kris, the more I am a fan.

I always liked him, I just liked Adam more.

Now the show is over, I am enjoying the music from both of them and look forward to hearing even more.

  • KrisAllen1

Heart kris and adam both have to interview on Larry King again.I think Kris also has stuff to do in disneyworld? He might have a apperance there.

I think Kri’s Ellen performance will be showing up at some point too next week. She’ll probably have Adam on at some point later on too.

  • KrisAllen1

I dont think adam will come on until his album comes out.//If he were to be on in the next few weeks Ellen would of never called him in the audience.

Wow, that was awesome, thank you. Watching Kris in that montage I was reminded of how well he moves and how good he looks on stage. To me he always looks like a “natural.”

  • sunchick

What about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Toe Boundaries?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Sounds like a hit to me. Get on that pronto, Kara.

    :laugh_tb:

    Seconds, hours, so many days
You know what you want, but how long can you wait?
    Every moment lasts forever
When your new shoes make you wanna cry

What if this torture was already done
Maybe with Jimmy Choos you can go wrong?
But you give me one good reason…
Oh damn I do look pretty fly

So here I am, still holding on

With every step, you pinch another poor toe
Every step, a blister starts to form
You’ll make it through the pain, throw back a Hurricane
when you get to that new club

Just when you think your toes are getting bunions
Just when your flip flops seem like a nice dream
Look at your shoes and sigh, and you remember why
    There are toe boundaries.
    There are toe boundaries.

THe song is growing on me and I don’t hate it anymore. Kris does a remarkable job with what he has to work with. Maybe he could surreptitiously change up the words … hee hee hee. I liked the ‘There are no foundries’ idea :)

The piano player is Michael Orland – Associate Music Director of AI. He was the only Music Director before Rickey Minor joined the crew about 4 years ago. Now they are both ‘Associates’ Two very talented and respected musicians and arrangers.

Michael also occasionally performs at the Upright Cabaret.

The originally quoted ‘Now you have to sing that song.’ by Adam was from Kris’ radio interview with Billy Bush. Whoever added the ‘Good’ at the front of it was misquoting.

It was funny and anyone thinking it was rude is …. well, nuts. The myfoxla interview was a change up. Kris arrived after the reporter started and was having Adam reenact Kris’ reaction and what they both said. Kris arrived as Adam was telling the shaking him out of shock part. Kris spoke Adam’s words.

Two great guys making the best of a situation who will go on to do great things.

Thanks for the Ellen link to Heartless. Love it! Ellen is a fan of both guys and I know she is happy for them. Big difference from the Taylor Hicks/Chris Daughtry year.

BTW, they wrapped up shooting for the season on Friday. They used to wrap earlier, but because Ellen is a HUGE AI fan, they extended the show a week a few years ago so she could interview the winner. Adam will surely be on when the tour ends and they resume taping.

Kris performing on the Early Show on Thursday

I believe he and Adam are taping their appearances next week, but I don’t think they will be airing on the same day.

  • lavender1960

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still here or not, but I wanted to give some clarification on this comment.

Thanks cookcricket, I have never heard of that expression before. Cool.

  • hollygo9

    What about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Toe Boundaries?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Well, Kris does love the analogy of himself as a shoe so…

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

sunchick-You truly have mad writing skills. I have a feeling Kris and Adam would love that.

    :clap_tb: :lol_tb:

  • KrazeeK120

Ugh. I think this is officially the worst song ever written. Even Kris’ awesome interpretation skills and Adam’s mad powerhouse vocals can’t do anything for this steaming pile of poo.

I will choose to remember Kris singing “Heartless” and “Falling Slowly” and not this dreck.

“Open Toe Boundaries” may be the perfect Kara mash up. If by perfect you mean craptastic.

I think Charice is way better than most American Idol contestants. You guys should check this girl out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuYxd9AxOLo (Charice sings I Have Nothing/I Will Always Love You)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OzToEkJ-vc (Charice sings Alone by Heart)

Oh my freaking shit!!!! :shock_tb: who the hell is that???!! SHE IS PHENOMENAL!! she gives Leona and Kelly a run for their money HANDS DOWN!!! is she from china? why does she keep doing those concerts in italy?? Sorry for my incessant questions, i think i’ve been too out of the music scene, i was always in the AI bubble..hehe

  • virgo03v

Adam will be Regis & Kelly next week too. Kris and Adam are doing the same shows, just on different days.

  • RemusL

sunchick, awesome lyrics for “Toe Boundaries”! ROFL!

You should send them in to Michael Slezak at EW.com; he might post them in one of his articles.

And is it kinda sad when I can basically recite your lyrics with the NB tune running through my head WITHOUT the actual song playing in the background? Ugh! It seems that song has entered my subconscious after only hearing it a few times.

  • Sydia

As much as Adam get accolades for his powerful voice, Kris sounds so much better doing this song. This kid is going to surprise everyone as far as radio play and selling music. Jusst watch him…

Charice is from the Philippines! We are so proud of her as we are proud of Lea Salonga, Brillante Mendoza and Manny Pacquiao! actually a lot of the singers here in the Philippines can match American Idol contestants, they are not just as famous as Charice has become. try searching for Kyla, Sarah Geronimo, Regine Velasquez (to name a few) in youtube :)

  • eminess

Kris! we believe in your ability to tap the romantic strings in people’s hearts. We love you! God Bless You!
