nice job only a few cracks here and there in his voice.  That’s a bitch of a song to sing and really is meant for big belting voices IMO

great job Kris. Goes up there with the Hawaii pro bowl and another i don’t remember where :)

Does Kris even do runs? That’s not his style of singing so why would he even explain it that way?

  • Larc

He may have been underrated three years ago, but his voice has developed
over the years and IMO, he can hold his own with the best of them and
singing “land of the fraaaayyy”, makes him more endearing to me because
    that’s so Kris Allen.

I like to think of it as a special salute to a music group: “O’er the land of The Fray…”  Jets overheard toward the end of the NA drowned out much of his volume, so I couldn’t hear if he did it this time.  :)

Really lovely. I can’t imagine where anyone heard a crack–he sounded flawless to me. As for the song, sometimes less can be more. The SSB can be enjoyed with all the bells and whistles or with just the purity of the melody. The latter is Kris’s style, and he works it to his advantage.

WOW! REALLY GREAT JOB KRIS!! YOU SOUNDED REALLY GREAT AS ALWAYS!!! CONGRATS KRIS!!!

  • Nele621

There are really a lot of singers, idols included, that don’t use runs as part of their singing style. Cook, Daughtry, Scotty (obviously), Phillip, and, of course Kris. You don’t need to use runs to be a good singer.

Blake Shelton says he hates runs. J/S.

That was a great job by Kris. His tone is always so good on the Anthem.  And it’s pleasing to my ear when a singer performs the Anthem in a key that fits his voice, which is what Kris does.  *clap, clap, clap*

technically, if you look at the history of the NA, the melody was set to a popular British drinking song of the time, which is why the melody/range is so hard. I think both low key singers and big belters can do it, it just has to be in the right key. Frankly, most big belters ruin it for me by slowing down the tempo to that of a funeral dirge, when it’s actually supposed to be a stately military march tempo.  /musical nerdery rant over

Kris rep’ing Idol well. Looked great, looked confident, and sounded really great! Saw numerous tweets thanking him for keeping it simple and not ruining it. :) Looks like he made a lot of new fans today!<3

I love the way Kris Allen sings our National anthem, so beautifully and respectfully.  I too, loved his grin when the jets flew over.

Singers who cannot do vocal runs diss singers who can and vise versa. Such is life in the music world.

It’s always interesting to hear various takes on the National Anthem. That song exposes vocals like no other.

This makes it six times Kris has performed the NA. My favorite is Hawaii Pro Bowl with the little kids. But the flyover today might become my new favorite.

For me, the best NA of Kris’ was the Pro Bowl one , just because it gave us (for me) that incredible pic of a smiling Kris with the lei around his neck.

I prefer no runs over hearing them overdone.  Some of the best singers I ever heard either don’t do them at all or use them very sparingly, as suits tasteful ornamentation.  With them it’s probably more a matter of choice than of lack of ability.

That was very pleasant to listen to! Go go, Kris Allen!

  • judes

Kris was explaining the way he likes to hear the anthem sung as well as how he likes to sing it. I also think  it is much easier to sing along to a national anthem that is more straight forward.Very different if you are listening at home but if you are at a sports event it is much harder to sing along when the singer puts in extra runs that aren’t part of the melody .

Gee, those jets really saved him on “free.”. (why doesn’t he start a half tone lower? I think he has the range for it, and he wouldn’t be wailing on “ramparts red glare” or resorting to saying “fray” instead of “free.”

Still, love Kris. I got to get his new cd.

  • too-cool-for-school

I love the one from the Pro Bowl! Definitely my favorite too, but I like them all. :D

  • too-cool-for-school

I like how you can hear the crowd singing along when he sings it. It’s always a nice touch! :)

Some thoughts. Kris doesn’t actually sing ‘fray’, it’s more ‘fraee’ very similar to Tom Petty’s ‘free’ in parts of ‘Free Falling’. (Cuz I’m FRAEE, free falling)

I became somewhat obsessed with listening to people pronounce ‘free’ when this first came up years ago here. The word is used so much in our everday life that it’s easy to hear people saying it … and singing such as in the National Anthem.

Kris certainly doesn’t diss people who use runs in their singing. That would be quite odd for him since his two favorite people this season of Idol were Jessica and Joshua, the queen and king of runs.

What I understand Kris to be saying is that the National Anthem is a populist song and that the assembly (in this case sports fans) should be drawn in by the singer to sing along with them. When a singer resorts to runs, that excludes that participation.

The concept of ‘fray’ being sung instead of ‘free’ because it’s easier is an odd one to me. I found no references or explanations to that prior to 3 years ago when I tried to research it. In fact, on many music forums, people pretty much responded with ‘huh?’ I did find one person who tried to intellectualize an answer that the person asking obviously wanted.

Speaking of Jessica, she sang a gorgeous ‘National Anthem’ recently that was run fraee. :)

well in terms of vowel sounds the ay sound is a hell of a lot easier to keep in tone than the eee sound, but you are correct that either is just as easy to keep in tune. Personally I think it’s just an accent thing, and since Kris really hasn’t taken formal voice lessons, no one has dissuaded him from the ay sound.  /music nerdery over again

It was exciting that Kris was in my little old state even though I won’t go near Dover on race day cause it is crazy!
