Kris Allen sang the National Anthem at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii today. The game aired on FOX. Oh, to be someplace warm and snow free right now. Sigh.

Enjoy Kris’s performance after the jump. He sings with little Hawaiian kids. Aw. It truly is the ‘Land of the Fraaaayyy!” Just kidding! Sweet job, Kris and kids.

DA4real: My bro @KrisAllen just made his whole family cry, sittin in the living room watching Pro Bowl! Wow! Even “I” am impressed…

  • Elliegrll

Kris sounded great. The version that he did at the Mets game is still my favorite, but this might be my second favorite, mainly because of how happy he looks.

  • cookcricket

‘Land of the Fraaaayyy!” Just kidding!

    It’s his trademark!! ;) I couldn’t be happier, what a great job!! :D

  • Banished

Yay for the land of the fray!!!

  • ItsMyT1me

Aw. He’s adorable. The sweet little smile when they said “platinum” recording artist. Good job Kris.

I haven’t kept up with him recently. Is he working on a new record or doing any more touring? I never got to see him headline. Saw him open for Daughtry and the Miami Dolphins thing but would love a full set.

  • jtgraffix

land of the fraaayyyy!!! haha awesome!

what a refreshing take on the NA. i miss home now…

  • marmom07

Beautiful simply beautiful. He has such nice tone. Can’t wait to hear what he’s working on for his next album.

  • bridget

That was sweet – and #52 sure seemed to be enjoying it.

  • FaithfulFan

Squeee! I got to see Kris on tv. I thought he did a really good job with the NA and he looked relaxed and like he was having fun. LOL I always find myself holding my breath waiting to hear “land of the fraaaaay” cause I love it. For me, that’s Kris putting his own personal touch on the NA.

  • CindyM

Posted in the other thread, but I’ll post again :) That was a great job of the anthem by Kris. A sweet version, loved the kids too!

  • girlygirl

    ItsMyT1me

He’s working on album #2, writing writing writing!

He doesn’t have any tour stuff lined up right now. He is performing at the NLC Decade event in Little Rock in mid-February, supposedly, though

  • fuzzywuzzy

land of the fraaayyyy!!! haha awesome!

LOL! What an odd pronunciation. First time I’ve heard it. Anyway, I thought that Kris did a fine job with the NA. I envy him being in Hawaii.

    GREAT JOB!

Does anyone know if Katy was able to go with Kris to Hawaii?

  • tripp_ncwy

There is money to be made playing in the Pro Bowl.
    Winning players make $45k
    Losing players make 22k

Plus a week long trip to Hawaii. But as one player put it, he has to win because he is already in the hole since he brought his entire family to Hawaii with him.

  • tripp_ncwy

Does anyone know if Katy was able to go with Kris to Hawaii?

    Katy & Lizzie are there.

  • x57x

It sounded like there was a ukulele in the background. Very Hawaiian and loved the kids.

  • Triskel4

Best introduction ever! Seriously. Loved the dancers and the kids singing the harmonies. Loved the white t-shirt with Lei accessory. Was over there last spring; this made me wish so, so much that I was there now instead of being here with all the frayking snow.

  • jinger

Yay! I love how Kris seems to get such a kick out of the fun stuff he gets to do. He sounded great :)

  • girlygirl

    Land of the Fraaaayyy!

Does the Fray give him a kick back for doing that? j/k

I wonder what per cent of all pro National Anthems are now done by idols. They better start making that a theme week to get the new crop prepared.

  • TwigLA

Grrr, I missed it. I forgot to tune to Fox. Thankfully, I get to watch and listen to it here.

Kris sounded great and I loved that he did this with the kids. The hula girls were beautiful in their gestures and the children’s choir just meshed so well with Kris.

That’s a sweet tweet from his brother. Oh and YAY for how they introduced him!!!!

    Need to watch again.

  • iLisaLisa

Don’t know who came up with the idea of the backup kids, but it’s so appropriate for Kris since he’s contributed more than a half million dollars personally to support chlldren’s music education in schools. It’s a cause close to his heart. So that made the performance extra-special. Music Empowers is the cause Kris is supporting…if anybody’s interested. Great team in charge. musicempowersfoundation.com

    Just kidding.;-)

He did a nice job, stayed within his range and ability and looked so happy to be doing it. Respectable job. He seems like a really nice guy, too.

Add it the idols who have done the NA list!:-)

  • jumpstart

Very nice job. Kris sounded (and looked) great!

  • superfudge

He did a great job on the NA.

  • SpenserJ

I agree with Payton – Kris did a great job :). This game is so hilariously lopsided, it’s cracking me up. At least the AFC finally has some points on the board.

  • mamacitabaja

I was out and about and made it a point to be home in time to see Kris sing. I always get a little nervous for him when he performs the NA, but as usual he did a fantastic job. He looked so pleased with himself, as well he should. I agree, the kids harmonizing was a very appropriate touch. It just all flowed together seamlessly. Now I’m excited to see what’s next. On a more personal note, he looked really great. Just sayin:)

  • aa618892

Wow, I loved this! Kris did a great job. This was so much more pleasant to listen to than Clay’s video. The little Hawaiian kids were very cute. Kris looked adorable.

  • Kirkee

I’m not usually a fan of Allen’s voice but I really liked how he sounded here. Great job.

Kris seems like such a cool dude. He has to be the most likable idol ever. You just can’t hate the guy.

I don’t see how someone could hate any of the winners, runners-up, contestants, etc. I mean, unless you know them personally of course. LOL.

@nballen Just sayin…. My kid or not that was a great performance of our National Anthem….

@allen_kimberly So are we overly patriotic if we rewind the national anthem and watch it over and over?

    @jambajim
@KrisAllen It’s cooler (and raunchier) when Brett Favre texts you “great job.”

I’m not even American, and I’ve watched it more times than I’ll admit. :)

I think he did a great job, and I just find it so charming how he says “fraaay”. He’s adorable!

  • batgirl478

Nothing much more to add but I too loved how they included the kids. It was just so sweet and touching. And I also love “land of the fraaay!” Its just too adorable.

  • Valentin432

That was fantastic!!! When I didn’t think Kris could get any better (he is close to perfection) he does! WOW! I watched the game and somehow missed this. So glad it is here for me to enjoy. Hope him and his wife enjoyed Hawaii. Beautiful state. Home of my birth so I am alittle bias! LOL

  • hoosiermama

That was wonderful!!! Loved this version with the kids–their dancing and singing along. Very sweet! And Kris’ tone at :31 when he said “see” was just so gorgeous. LOL at “the land of fraaay”! I do believe that is now his “signature” line! :-)

Thanks MJ for posting this since I missed it live. I wonder if Lizzie got the whole thing on video like she has in the past (hope so, for all-Kris video!)?

Kris looked great–very relaxed and as always, adorable. Now that he’s taken care of business, I hope he and Katy will enjoy their vacation in paradise (sure beats waiting for another snowstorm like here)!

By the way, I. am. shocked. that we haven’t had any comparisons to Clay’s NA, which he sang at the NHL.

  • freckledLIPS

    wow, great job, Kris!
he looks gorgeous and sounded great.

  • JoCeeisme

Loved it, his best version yet! As for comparisons to Clay, there are none (don’t mean that in a nasty way – I just preferred one a hundrred times more than the other). Hope we get some video of his hula dance and other activities in Hawaii, love seeing the ‘off duty’ Kris.

  • Elliegrll

By the way, I. am. shocked. that we haven’t had any comparisons to Clay’s NA, which he sang at the NHL.

I’m glad that we haven’t had too many, I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s the Star Spangled Banner, one of the hardest songs to sing, so I’m impressed by anyone who is willing to get up in front of millions of people and perform it. Neither guy embarrassed himself, and neither tried to change the song, so that it lost its meaning.

  • Ratna12

Gorgeous picture of Kris from Yahoo Sports.

Music Empowers is a great cause — and Kris supports this great organization. And I am certain that performing with these kids was a great moment for Kris. But I do not believe he made a personal contribution of $500K to Music Empowers. • BootStar

Didn’t know he’d be singing the national anthem yesterday when I tuned in for the game and, therefore, did not have time to get nervous on his behalf as I do with most “Idols.” And you know what? It was just fine. Good even! Just a nice straightforward rendition. Bravo.

FWIW, my husband and son were trying to remember where they knew him from and finally realized it was “Idol.” (They’d both bagged that season about halfway through.) They were both happy to hear he was “platinum selling.”

  • sf3456

realy ? Kris Allen? did anyone buy his record? :) coffee shop kids at best.

  • dy77

Yes, people really bought his record. Many of them. He’s not the best-selling idol of all time, but LLWD went platinum. His album, if judged by this year’s sales, did ok too. And it’s not always about sales.

Back to the topic, Kris did great on the anthem, I was so proud. Very sweet and heartfelt version. Ray Lewis’ reaction was wonderful.

  • lorismile

Kris did a very nice job. :-)

  • tripp_ncwy

On the question of Music Empowers, Q3 is correct that Kris has not personally contributed that much money. Andy Davis has stated several times that Kris has “helped” raise something like 500K last year for the organization. To me, it really doesn’t matter the amount but when anyone can take the time to raise money or volunteer for a good cause should be applauded.

Yes, this NA performance is special. It seemed so effortless despite the fact that so much was going on……Kris, the dancers and then the choir. Beautiful and touching.

  • RowZee824

It sure sounded like it had some country “twang” to me so I can see why some people might think he is a country singer if it’s the first time they might have listened to him.

Not a huge fan of Kris, but I enjoyed this very much and loved the way he kept it simple. It’s not a very easy piece to sing for sure.

I also hope he and Katy enjoy the sunshine and beauty of the islands.

Thanks for posting this Tripp. I saw this tweet from Music Empowers last week and it came to my mind again when I saw the sweet kids singing behind Kris yesterday.

In reading these posts, someone said this NA rendition was “effortless” even with the added elements like the kids singing and the dancers. I agree. I’ve never been to Hawaii, but there is something in that observation that reflects my (naive) idea of what experiencing traditional Hawaiian culture would be like.

I actually like Kris quite a bit, and thought he did a great job here, but I know what you mean about that “hitch/cry in his voice”. Sometimes it works for songs, but sometimes I can do without it. It’s not a whine per se, but I think it comes out more when he’s singing ballads or “sad/angsty” songs. That’s probably why, as pretty as his version of Falling Slowly is, I prefer the original (Glen and Marketa) version more, and I also generally prefer Kris on upbeat and/or peppy songs.

Hello, Kris fans! I rarely read or visit AI-related stuff anymore, but I thought there would probably be a Kris-related-NA thread. I really miss all the Kris fans here!

I loved the intro for Kris’ NA. I loved that they didn’t make any statement which connected him with AI, and I ESPECIALLY loved that they mentioned his platinum-selling status. I still don’t understand why AI & Jive haven’t played up that very successful milestone (I soooo often see fans of others intentionally ignore his platinum record and pretend he hasn’t had any success, but I don’t understand why AI, Jive, etc., would want to ignore it.)

Anyway, I loved this smooth version of NA, and I’m greatly looking forward to Kris’ next album.

    ___

Also, I had to add that it was really classy of Anoop to tweet about what a great job Kris did. It always seemed as if Kris & Anoop had a nice friendship.

That Yahoo Sports picture is just, ummm, WOW!

Thanks tripp. I notice that Kris’ performance of the NA was the only performance with a link to watch a video which was nice. But, whoops, she referred to him as Season 9 AI winner. Must have got her #’s mixed up.

  • tierbee

Finally got a chance to watch this – it was lovely. It just all *worked* and Kris looked and sounded great. Well done :)

  • tierbee

    Ray Lewis’ reaction was wonderful.

Loved it. Watched the whole thing twice, it was just great from start to Ray Lewis finish ;)

ETA: Maybe Kris is asking Johnny to work with him on his new album.

Who is Johnny? I can’t see his face.

I think he is the lead singer of Goo Goo Dolls who performed a couple songs before the game.

Thanks Ratna. Even if I had seen his face I probably wouldn’t have known that’s who he was . Seems like Kris was a better fit with the hula girls than the Goo Goo Dolls!

I just read that the pro bowl had it’s best tv rating since 2000.
12 million viewers according to preliminary numbers from Nielson. That’s a lot of exposure for Kris.

  • JB1

Hilarious to hear people love this version and not like Clays in the next post. Clay blows Kris away as a singer… granted Clay doesn’t have the rest of the package, but straight singing? Please…

  • serafina

Just checked this out and was thrilled to see Kris doing a fantastic job of the NA.
    Thanks I needed that!

  • madeformusic

Kris did really great job! This version is now on my player :)

  • TJP

I rarely commented on these posts, but damn, that was such a good rendition of SSB. I love the hawaiian touch to it, it really shows such a great musician Kris is.

@JB1 sorry if you find my preference hilarious, just don’t like great singers that tend to overdo the singing. Kris is more my cup of tea…

I saw an NFL tweet on the ratings this morning. I have no clue what would account for the ratings increase, but hey, I’ll take it.

If you notice the people posting negative remarks on Clay’s version are not persons posting here. I posted a really positive post on Clay’s rendition of the NA.

  • x57x

I re-listened to Kris singing the NA over and over and I am really enjoying it. So soothing and pretty. A really different take on the NA.

  • Truthiness

I generally liked this version, the kids who were dancing, were cute, the chorus was cute. Land of the fraaaay? mmmkay.

    However,

I actually like Kris quite a bit, and thought he did a great job here, but I know what you mean about that “hitch/cry in his voice”. so agree. I also really like Kris. But also agree tht sometimes that hitch/whine doesn’t work for me. For me? it can be actively annoying. MMV, of course.

So while overall I liked this SSB, and good job Kris!and cute kids! there was that hitch/whine I would consider Country (and that I don’t like about Country) going on.

Yes! Here are the updated numbers:

The NFL Pro Bowl on Fox crushed the mostly repeat and movie competition on Sunday night.

Here are updated numbers for the game (not reflected in the scoreboard above) from Fox:

The 2011 PRO BOWL packed a Hawaiian punch last night earning a 7.7/12 with 13.4 million viewers on FOX, making it the most-watched since 1997 (13.5 mill.) and the highest-rated since 2000 (8.6/15).

Compared to last year’s game, the 2011 PRO BOWL is up +8% in rating (7.7/12 vs. 7.1/11) and up +9% in viewership (13.4 mill. vs. 12.3). Last night’s game improved over last year by +5% among Adults 18-34 (4.1 vs. 3.9), and by a substantial +34% among Adults 25-54 (6.3 vs. 4.7).

Definitely great exposure for Kris! And he did a fantastic job!

  • JoCeeisme

Well I for one like the hitch/cry that is sometimes in his voice so I am not complaining, and isn’t so histerically funny JB1 that someone can enjoy one singer (Kris) over another (Clay)reguardless of their singing ability.

  • http://MJO judes

Well I must say I’m another one that likes the so called “hitch/cry” in Kris’s voice. To me it makes it more unique & interesting than a voice that is perfect but of course this is JMO .
I also liked Clay’s rendition of the anthem but I really don’t think you can compare performances as they were so different- once again Kris’s was unique- Clay’s was a more standard performance.

  • colette

Strings, children’s choir, hula and Kris! Well, that’s a new one, and a lot more enjoyable than most agonized NA renditions.

seriously, he sounds so good — I remember his first NA after winning, a trial by fire that even the cucumber-cool David Cook found paralyzing. Kris’s voice has really gotten stronger after all that touring, and it still has the beautiful feeling and tone I’ve always loved about it…

  • Grammie Kari

What a terrific job Kris did, and he looked like he was having fun. What a doll babe.

  • MusicAlltheTime

I love the little break Kris puts into his voice. I agree that it’s a technique often used in country music. I think it’s really cool that he incorporates elements from so many diverse genres into his music.

  • Hope07

I, too love the little hitch/cry in Kris’s voice. He doesn’t over use it, and it is pretty unique outside of country, and to me, unique is a good thing.

He was absolutely the perfect choice for that particular performance, as he looked so cute and relaxed. The casual white tee and lei, along with the ukelele and kids who accompanied him, just made it so perfect!

  • Ratna12

Is this posted already ? another Kris pic singing.

Count me in as another one that LOVES the hitch/cry in Kris’ voice. In fact that is the quality that draws me in the most to his voice, and I find myself listening with anticipation for that when he sings (and I am not particularly a country music fan). I think his version of To Make You Feel My Love is so beautiful because of that.
