Congrats to Kris Allen! (And his fans who voted like crazy.) His “Live Like We’re Dying” music video took the #1 spot on this week’s VH1 Top 20 Countdown!

This week’s episode aired early this morning on VH1. It’s airing right now (9 am et/pt) on the east coast, and will air again on Sunday at 8 pm et/pt and Tuesday at 9 am et/pt.

“Live Like We’re Dying” cracked the Top 20 of Nielsen SoundScan’s Top Digital Tracks chart this week, selling more than 69K copies. The single is currently #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Kris knocked another Idol out of the Top spot– Daughtry’s “Life after You” went from #1 last week to #2 this week. Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want from Me” bowed on the chart at #11, and Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” is #8.

YAY!!! Congrats to Kris for this! LLWD is also up to #21 on Pop radio and #9 on HAC! Woo hoo!!! So close to that top 20 milestone on Pop!

ETA: Just checked Seacrest’s AT40 and it’s up a notch to #28 on his show this week.

I’m so happy for Kris. I couldn’t stay awake for the first airing of the countdown, but I’m anxiously awaiting for it to air again. This is just so cool for Kris, and he really deserves it. The best part is knowing that this song and video have extended beyond Kris’ fan base, and that it is being enjoyed, purchased, and voted on by people who aren’t just voting for Kris, but who actually like the song and the video. And that it’s being supported by people who aren’t just voting for it because they don’t like other artists who’s on the countdown.

  • Maggels

CongraTs to Kris. That’s great! I believe Adam debuted at #11? Are Daughtry and Kelly also on the list?

After all the discussion about AI and if it can it produce successful artists, I think VH1 puts one check mark in the yes column.

Congrats to Kris on hitting #1! I love the song and the video, and it has clearly connected with lots of people. The song and the video just keep chugging away. And I agree with you, Masieta, we need a tour schedule, and fast! I know he’s got the two Philippines shows and the one in Singapore, but his US fans who haven’t had the chance to see him yet are dying here!

Yay Kris. Always liked the song and so glad it is finally #1 and getting a ton of airplay. I hear it on the radio all the time now and also hear Adam’s song too.
In fact the other day I swear I was listening to American Idol radio. I heard, Kris, Adam, Kelly, Daughtry and Carrie all in a row…really!

Congrats to Kris and to all his fans that voted like mad! As a hard voting Daughtry fan I must admit that I was actually happy that it was Kris that nudged them down this week! I remember the first time Daughtry was #1 all those years ago….it was very exciting and it’s cool that Kris and his fans made it to the top! The die hard voters, although very aggressive, can only do so much….it takes the interest of the general public and popularity of the song to get it to #1.

Do you guys remember the day he mocked himself on twitter that he was watching top40 sexiest music videos on fuse and it’s almost done and he hasn’t seen his video but his fingers are crossed and still hoping? He set twitter ablaze with people telling him he was personally sexy and didn’t need a video to prove that. I’m so happy for him and couldn’t help but dance embarrasingly.
I don’t think at that time he ever thought there will be a time that he could hit #1 oon any countdown.
I was awake but lying in bed waiting to watch it after I saw people tweet about it earlier but dozed off again after #7. Guess who woke me up when LLWD came up. My 3yr old daughter.
She loves Kris and becommes so excited anytime I pkay his music especially AWM. She knows the songs and sing along but with her own words………sigh. My husband was shocked when he found out she even knew Kris name and could sing all his songs.

  • Maggels

And congrats to Adam, for debuting at #11!

The die hard voters, although very aggressive, can only do so much….it takes the interest of the general public and popularity of the song to get it to #1.

Exactly! I think that WWFM is a good example for that, since FYE debuted at #16, and I’m sure just as much rabid fans were voting- but no-one outside the bubble did. I’m willing to bet that because WWFM is already a popular song, more people from the “outside” voted for it!

It also means Kris has expanded his voters significantly- and that’s super!

Very proud of Kradam (I’m a fan of the Kradam friendship- not in the musical sense)!

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I am a bad Kris fan. I don’t vote on stuff like this, so what is the criteria? Is it a mixture of radio play, chart placement, etc?

I believe it is all on-line voting. Basically they list 25 mvs on their website and you rank them 1-20. Kelly was on the list, but didn’t make the top 20 this week. You can rank/vote as many times as you like. But I’m not sure how VH1 selects which mvs to put in the 25 that you get to choose from.

  • babybelle32

The die hard voters, although very aggressive, can only do so much….it takes the interest of the general public and popularity of the song to get it to #1.

    Exactly.

Kelly was on the list, but didn’t make the top 20 this week.

VH1 is going to take her video off of their rotation, so it won’t be on next week’s contenders, and they will stop airing he video.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I’ve actually heard differently, that it is some combination of voting, radio play, how often it is played on VH1, and sales

Wow, I did not know that. I could see them using that criteria to select the 25 that you get to choose from. After that I assumed it was all on-line voting to get the ranking of the top 20.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

  • babybelle32

I’ve actually heard differently, that it is some combination of voting, radio play, how often it is played on VH1, and sales

I doubt they take all this into account. If radio play played a part (beyond the simple fact that those songs that get a lot of radio exposure will have more votes, since more people are aware of them) videos like the Nick Jonas one wouldn’t be on the chart. It certainly wouldn’t be ahead of the Owl City song. I think this excuse is one that is used by some fans who are upset at the ranking of their favorite, and who don’t realize that others also have one or more favorite song.

  • washyourhands

I am so happy for Kris! He totally deserves the spotlight. I think the fanbase is growing because many Kris stans are saying that they didn’t vote much this week, including me.

The die hard voters, although very aggressive, can only do so much….it takes the interest of the general public and popularity of the song to get it to #1.

Cook’s “Light On” video debuted at #1 (which was the same week he made an appearance on VH1, so that was nice).
Since it was a new video which the general public hadn’t seen very much, I think it was mostly crazy fans voting it to the top.

My point being, that crazy, aggresive voting can get a video to #1. Not to say that is what happened in Kris’s case since LLWD has taken a while to hit the #1 spot. In Kris’s case, I agree it is that the general public is also voting for it, rather than just fans.

Unless VH1 says that votes don’t matter, I don’t see how anyone who doesn’t work for the company would know if they do or don’t. Considering the success of Cook and Archie on the countdown, I think it’s a good guess that the votes do matter.

  • vanjess38

Expect some oneday good update for HAC. That was what made Daughtry pass him on the chart . VH1 gave him lots of plays during the week and that surely gave him good updates on HAC this week. I think Kris will see that too.

As far as I know, the vote counts no matter how many spots you fill out.

But just like with how the countdown is tabulated, this is just what I’ve heard — I don’t know for sure (when I vote, I usually only fill out 2 or 3 slots)

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Question. Does anyone get paid when a mv is played on VH1 or MTV? I just learned a few days ago that songwriters get paid by the radio station everytime their song is played on the radio. From why I understand, performers/singers do not get paid when it’s played. Only the songwriter. Is there something similar for VH1 and MTV? Or is it just considered free advertising for the single?

HeidiL – I’m a Kris fan too, and I didn’t vote at all for this VH1 countdown. I never vote for these types of on-line polls.

Even if the video was voted to the top by a handful of “crazed fans,” I didn’t see any complaining of the sort for other IDOLs when their video was at the top, presumably from the votes of some “crazed fans.” I haven’t seen much evidence of “crazed” Kris fans, although I’ll admit I don’t spend my time looking for them.

  • girlygirl

Katy would likely laugh hysterically if Kris woke her up with that “baby I got a #1 video” dance Jim Shearer suggested on the countdown show…

  • washpd

JJ123, you are a classy fan! It is great to see an artist you care about hit any kind of milestone. And it’s nice that some can cheer others’ success without feeling like their favorite is somehow threatened by it.

I’ve already seen some nasty tweets from certain fans saying how ridiculous it is that Kris’s video is #1, but it’s been working its way up the countdown for a long time, and Adam himself congratulated his “brutha” Kris on the accomplishment. So, that was very nice. I do think he is often embarrassed by his more crazy and sometimes meanspirited fans, especially considering he and Kris are friends.

At any rate, yay again for Kris for his #1! Yay for Daughtry at #2! Yay for Carrie at #8! Yay for Adam at #11!

  • ladymadonna

Congrats to Kris! This single continues to do exactly what it should be doing. It’s growing nice and organically, showing some legs and peaking slowly. And having the video high on the countdown should continue to fuel some nice little weekend sales bumps for the next several weeks.

Cook’s “Light On” video debuted at #1 (which was the same week he made an appearance on VH1, so that was nice). Since it was a new video which the general public hadn’t seen very much, I think it was mostly crazy fans voting it to the top.

The reason LO debuted at #1 is right there in your post, but it’s not just the crazy fans voting: Cook was appearing on VH1 that week, and debuting him at #1 made for good TV.

Oh, that video undoubtedly got a shitload of votes from the Cook power clickers. But there’s another factor involved in the countdown besides votes, radio chart position (mainly on HAC), sales, and general buzz… and that is VH1 themselves. They craft the countdown using all of the factors listed in order to produce a compelling television show every week (and often to promote their own properties – see videos by the likes of Brett Michaels, Brooke Hogan, Ray-J which have been on the countdown in the past year). There’s no doubt they play fast and loose with the positioning in order to create what semblance of drama they can from airing the same content for twenty weeks in a row. Countdown debuts or moves into the #1 slot are often timed to an appearance by the artist themselves (and which are announced several weeks in advance). While I do believe that votes are factored, there’s no consistent formula (as far as I have seen) in the countdown. Like Idol, it’s a TV show first and foremost.

ETA: Of course, that doesn’t diminish the fact that high placement and a long life on the countdown is certainly an indication of a song/video’s overall popularity. (And nor does it diminish the excellent promotional value that the countdown provides). The Vh1 countdown is a very important vehicle for Idol alumni and a lot of mainstream recording artists.

  • hoosiermama

Yeah Kris and LLWD! I’m a lazy fan, too, only voting one session of 10 votes in a row. I do not fill out the other slots after a discussion with another poster of that being like “splitting votes”. But who knows if my solitary votes count then? Whatever. It did take him a long time to get there, but get there he did! Woo Hoo!!

    KrisAllen

Given the volume of cray cray twitting, they would spent their life being embarrassed if it was the case. I think they have learned over time to just ignore and feel detached from this

  • JJ123

I think that the countdown has become more popular in the last couple years especially among idol fanbases, I mean most of us are online constantly so voting is no big deal and it’s a way to get the songs of your favorite out there. And more fans of up and coming acts have joined in so I do think that it’s a little more difficult to reach #1 than it was when Daughtry’s It’s Not Over debuted at the top as well as Cook’s LO. Daughtry has been around a long time and I have been an avid voter, so I have been a careful watcher of the countdown for years now. In the beginning their singles shot right to the top but with their last 2 it’s taken much longer and the fans putting in a little extra voting power. I’ve noticed this with other artists as well. It is a big deal to be #1!! I hear Kris’ song on the radio much more now, he’s earned it…..like I said before it’s all very exciting right now and I hope now that their AI season is long gone all fans can be happy for each other.

Oh and I just wanted to let whoever asked that you definitely do NOT have to fill out the whole grid for your votes to count. VH1 does not take kindly to spam or power voting or whatever that thing is called when you set up your computer to constantly revote….I have seen a couple videos removed from the list because of it. If you read the message boards over there you learn a few things lol. For those that decide to fill out the grid just know that you’re putting in votes for other artists as well so if you’re voting for one specific person it may end up hurting them. Also, years ago the countdown included radio play and sales as well as the votes but now I’m not sure exactly what counts…..I don’t know why but I think I remember hearing that it’s all about the votes now. I’ll do some asking around to be sure.

BTW, I subscribe to a bunch of street team twitters, and the CALL WAS OUT to vote for Kris this week. Yes, there was an, effort, organized by Kris fans to vote vote vote vote. Just like Adam, like Chris Daughtry, like Carrie Underwood.

ALL FAN GROUPS ORGANIZE the troups to VOTE.

And when I post these sorts of milestones, I think it’s important to make mention of the fan voting component. I always do, no matter WHO the Idol is.

  • Truthiness

Whoo hoo! That’s great. I’m so stoked about this and cool that some of Kris’s AI alumn are offering him congrats as well.

edited the post you were responding to

Well I’m still thrilled for Kris, I think it’s a really cool thing and I think it’s cool for all of the Idols in the poll. Yay for the Idols! Yay for their fans! Yes, even to the alternately lazy and rabid ones.

  • lorismile

I agree with MJ that fan groups do vote. Adam wouldn’t have made it to 11 without his fans voting Half of the tween stars wouldn’t be as popular without their fan bases gathering.

I always found it more interesting that the countdown isn’t more closely matched with the Itunes video chart. It’s also interesting to see the number of views for each video.

  • J9BT

    # Thanks for making LLWD #1 on VH1!

And I know Kris is excited because he used an exclamation mark!

LOL! IKR! It wasn’t too long ago when Kris said he was trying to figure out how to show emotion on Twitter – guess he found the exclamation mark key! I’m glad he’s excited. He should be.

  • hoosiermama

MJ–do your sources say the countdown is all about the votes now or is it a combination of radio airplay and sales, too? It would be helpful if you could shed some light on this.

  • Truthiness

Ooops, sorry mj. I can’t edit on this computer and saw your warning afterwards. I hope I wasn’t engage in fanwarring, cranky or otherwise. Though I do admit to being generally cranky, as the reason I can’t edit is that I’m stuck on my broken desktop, because my laptop is now even more broken than it. So sorry again.

So I’ll just stick to being happy for Kris on this milestone and thinking it’s cool for him and his fans.

  • Belle

The VH1 countdown never bears any correlation to the video sales charts, singles sales charts or airplay charts (either video or radio) so there is little to suggest that it is down to anything other than votes.

By the way, it’s funny that so many of Adam’s fans have spent the last 3 or 4 days voting on the wrong poll thinking it counted towards the VH1 countdown.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

Truthiness, Thanks, I needed that!

  • Kipper

    YEAH KRIS!

  • karenc

I’m really happy Kris was on the countdown and happy Adam was too.

I don’t think just power voting by fans gets a video or keeps in on the countdown. The last week the Come Back to Me video by David Cook was on the countdown, I know the fans were voting like crazy, just as much as they were before, and it didn’t keep it on the countdown, but it had been on there for 18 weeks. I definately think other factors are involved.

Though, I do wonder if the same people power voting too much for a video actually may hurt the artist. It’s great if it is at the top for awhile, but wonder if it is kept on the countdown, and if it’s just fans of a certain person voting, an opportunity may be missed for the artist to make another video that might draw in more fans. I may be completely wrong about this but I just wonder. Because possibly the record company wasn’t going to make another video anyway.

I’ve been watching the VH1 countdown for the past year or so, and pretty consistently, there has been about 3 or 4 people from Idol just about every week. It’s been some combination of the Davids, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, and even Elliot Yamin was on for a few weeks. Even if it is fans, that is pretty impressive to me that so many people from AI make it on the countdown.

  • babybelle32

    I

always found it more interesting that the countdown isn’t more closely matched with the Itunes video chart.

I don’t see how there could be a relationship between these two things. With youtube and other sites, as well as video on demand channels like music choice, what’s the point of buying a video? Look at the sales for videos, they don’t amount to too much, very few people are actually buying them.

Well to be fair, don’t you think people outside the online fan bubble made a decision to respond to this call? I just don’t see a huge online fan base for Kris. I’ve always been puzzled by this because I’m a huge DC fan and I know he has a large online following.

I don’t mean this as a fan warring statement, I’m just trying to ask a question from someone who has followed AI much longer than I have.

  • Seeker

Anyways, I think LLWD is now popular enough to have non Idol fans voting for it TOO. I don’t think it’s just cray cray Kris fans….
I voted only twice this week.

What AI fans need to remember is that there are other people voting besides those who are just voting for their favorite former AI contestant. In most cases, “some other factors” are as simple as other people getting more votes than our favorites. The countdown has been around longer than Kris, Adam, or the Davids, and a lot more people than just the overly invested AI fans watch the show and vote on the videos.

VH1 does remove videos when they’ve been out for a long time, and it looks like the song will start losing radio spins, and they also remove them when it’s obvious that the votes are due to mass voting by fan groups.

“Well to be fair, don’t you think people outside the online fan bubble made a decision to respond to this call? I just don’t see a huge online fan base for Kris.”
ITA!! Honestly, Kris’ online fanbase is comparatively small and TBH comparatively not that organised. There are very few decent Kris Allen centric fansites.

    (Hey, Diane :) !!)

  • babybelle32

does anyone watch vh1?? much less in the morning when the countdown is on? or does it air another time?

The ratings for the various VH1 shows are readily available from several reliable internet sources, including tvbythenumbers. Considering that like MTV, VH1 has drastically overhauled their schedule in recent years, I think it’s a good guess that if the Countdown wasn’t profitable that it wouldn’t still be on the air after all of these years. And considering the number of views for many of the videos at VH1, not just the ones that have been inflated by AI fans, I’d say that VH1 has viewers.

  • alaadam

The important question is how does it relate to sales? Has anyone seen a bump on itunes this morning from either of the idols since the countdown?

  • SarahP

wooooo hooooo! all my crazy voting finally paid off :)

since i was never able to vote for kris during Idol (not being in US and all) i finally feel like a deserving fan…

  • babybelle32

    Y

ou speak for America, do you? In the UK and several other countries you cannot watch official music videos on Youtube (nor more recently on Vevo) until they are well past their sell-by date.

Well then yes, I do speak for America. (LOL) Since in the discussion was about the VH1 countdown not looking like the itunes video sales chart. In the US sales of videos are very low, which would lead to the logical conclusion that most people don’t buy videos. The VH1 countdown, the one that is the discussion of this thread, is based in the US, so it would go to reason that since in the US video sales are low, why would we expect this US based countdown show’s rankings to mirror a chart that doesn’t mean a heck of a lot. That just doesn’t make any sense. I could go deeper and point out that since the countdown is basically a popularity contest, where people can vote more than once, why would anyone expect it to mirror a chart that only shows where a few hundred videos are being sold a week.

At the most, the countdown may fall in line with which songs are more popular on the radio, but even that’s not totally true.

  • Seeker

LLWD is holding steady in the mid twenties (itunes), it has not gone below 25 in weeks! Plus the fact that the single or Kris Allen have had barely any promotion for the last week or so… I’m thinking that a good thing for the single… it’s not slipping or fading away.

    (Sorry, Diane… I’m not on FB :( !!)

  • Sumer

If people love this video so much why aren’t they buying it?

I personally think it stinks, sorry to hurt any feelers. I like him as an artist too, its just a cheap stupid video.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

I still say Kris is taking the usual route to establishing his name. He flew under the radar (Adam!) on idol, so not a lot of people even know that Kris won. Here’s something to think about. From Bon Jovi on spinner.com:

So how does an artist make it today? Is it better to ride around in a van from town to town or do ‘Idol?’ “Well, both of them are good launch pads. Getting in the van, deciding who and what you are — there’s nothing wrong with that,” he says. But for those who win ‘Idol,’ it’s still ultimately about the music. “Of you’re brave enough to go on and win one of those ‘Idol’ contests, ultimately you better have the songs to back it up,” he says. “Chris Daughtry has delivered songs on two albums in a row. But I’m sure there are 10 Idols I can think of that didn’t do that or had a flash in the pan.”

  • tierbee

That’s the nature of the beast. It’s like they train fans to vote, vote, vote during the season and the urge to vote, vote, vote never wears off. Kris’ fans organize and push the voting, Adam’s fans organize and push the voting, Cook’s fans organize and push the voting… they ALL do it.

It’s cool that he got to #1. That’s about the end of it for me :)

  • tierbee

If people love this video so much why aren’t they buying it?

Well, at least speaking from my perspective – I really like the song, I like hearing Kris sing the song on my TV, but I don’t want the video on my iPod, I don’t watch videos on my iPod. The only one I ever bought was Come Back to Me and… shamed confession… it’s because Cookie was so.damn.purty. I know, sad. But I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who will vote and like the song and not want to buy the video. You don’t have to necessarily love the video to vote for it, some folks are voting for the song, or for Kris, I’m quite sure.

Every time I turn on my radio I hear LLWD. It’s doing very well.

  • mimi

The important question is how does it relate to sales?

Don’t think this is an important question. #1 on Vh1 is an accomplishment in itself. I am an invested Kris fan and did not see any unusual push for votes this week, either. I’m also not getting the conspiracy theory regarding LLWD reaching gold? Really? If there was a conspiracy to push it to gold don’t you think it would have taken less than 3-4 mos to get it there?

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

I for one loved the video. Lots of nice Kris shots in it. And he’s purdy too!

mmb, I was talking about Adam getting a definite increase in sales due to Oprah.

  • AlliB

Well, for what it’s worth, on Canadian iTunes LLWD is #68 now, where it has been lower than 150 for most of the week!

My first reaction in such events is that my feed is messed-up, but Stranded (Haiti mon amour) is #1, so it seems current.

  • Levine

While I’m happy that LLWD got the #1 spot, I still don’t understand this #1 thingy. Does this mean that the MV is #1 in sell this week? Or #1 online viewed video this week? Or just #1 voted this week?
I just checked iTurn, the number one MV is BedRock. FYE is at #41. And LLWD is at #179…

  • alaadam

Congrats to Kris and his fans. Hopefully Adam will reach #1 soon and then his accomplishment can be attributed to his fans spamming. Believe me, today will be forgotten and Adam’s fans will be accused of mass voting, etc. Apparently, all idol fans (and Beiber, Jonas, etc) all do it. I, for one, am happy Adam debuted at #11 and doesn’t have as far to climb. lol

  • tierbee

It’s supposed to mean that it is the #1 voted video this week.

If a straight transfer doesn’t work, you may have to save it to a dvd, and then save it on another program that you use to play videos, like real player or windows media player, and then load it onto your phone.

  • Justin8602

Congrats to Kris and his fans on a great accomplishment at achieving #1. Congrats to Adam and all the Adam fans for having a great debut. Congrats to all the Carrie and Daughtry fans for their continued longevity on the countdown!

  • babybelle32

If people love this video so much why aren’t they buying it?

Video sales only amount to a few hundred, at the most, per week. Streaming, video hits, and video downloads are a better indication of how much people like a video than video sales. Even with that, for most people it’s about the music. Sales of LLWD clearly show that people like the song, as well as the song being the 22nd most streamed song this week.

  • kneipho

So glad that all the idols did so well on the countdown this week!
However, I have a confession to make, though I voted for our kraadam boyz, I placed The Script and Jay-Z in the number one AND 2 slots. Luv me some Idols, but even the BSCs stray every now and again. :)

I keed, I keed. Jay-Z and the Script are very big in my house. The countdown on VH1 is a family thing, here — so the countdown votes are done by commitee.

Again, congrats to Kris, Adam and all the Idols. It’s nice to see them all up there.

  • mr

You guys know what I just noticed? I only saw the LLWD MV once, when it came out, but in honour of it making it to #1, I decided to watch again- and I noticed that the beginning of it really resembles parts of that experimental mini-series his wife Katy did that mj posted here a few weeks ago… the parts with the truck driving in the dark… looking bluish… kind of a suspense feeling to it… ha ha… I wonder if they noticed it!

  • sunnysider

    Congrats to Kris!

If there was an organized fan effort to vote for Kris this week (beyond the usual reminders to vote) then I somehow missed it. Perhaps it was relegated to twitter which I am not a part of (Twitter is the devil). Either that of there is some Kris fan board out there filled with organized and motivated Kris fans, in which case someone needs to direct me to it since I find most Kris fans are so chill and laid back that getting any kind of organized effort going is pretty impossible.

  • lorismile

I think it’s still cool, whether it was all cray-cray fans voting for Kris or non-AI fans voting. I don’t think it really matters. I imagine it must validating to see your video as the #1 on the countdown. Think of all the hard work these kids are putting into jump starting their careers, and it seems they are at a disadvantage, especially Kris, since he did not even have a good coronation song to help boost him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 ai_fan

I agree Lorismile. They work so hard and they deserve their rewards!
I know that was a great thing for Kris to see first thing this morning!

  • CathyMK

Congrats to Kris! I hadn’t even dare dream that LLWD could get to #1, so this is a nice surprise!

BTW, as others have said, fan voting alone doesn’t get a song on the countdown, or keep it there, otherwise, Crush, LO, and CBTM would have all made it to 20 weeks, and Archuleta’s 2nd video would have made it to #1 as well (AFAIK, the countdown never played it). VH1 seems to have it’s own recurrency rules for when it removes a video. I’ve heard people say they remove it when the song loses it’s bullet on HAC, but I’ve never watched closely enough to verify it. It would explain why Already Gone is, er, already gone from the countdown, since it’s been slowly dropping on HAC for a while now.

If people love this video so much why aren’t they buying it?

People just seem to prefer to buy singles rather than videos. I remember when the song Tik Tok started taking off, it was the free video of the week on iTunes, yet the single was suddenly in the top 10 on the top songs chart. I was amazed that so many people were bothering to buy the single when they could get the song for free as a video. For me, the video is as good as the single, because my iPod will play videos as only audio if I want it to, but most people don’t realize that, or don’t have mp3 players that will play videos, or just follow tradition and buy the single (or the whole album). That’s true whether you’re buying music from an Idol or not.

  • babybelle32

It may just be that people aren’t used to buying videos, and many don’t have a way to play them if they did. If the only way they can play them is on a computer, why spend the money when you can download it for free off of youtube, or record it off of the television. Even if some people have the capability to view videos on a mp3 player, since the screens are small, it’s really not the most comfortable thing to do. For some, it seems like buying the video has more to do with supporting the artist than anything else.

This is why I think it helps to have some experience in the music business before going into to idol. I know David Cook had already been in bands for years and had his solo cd. He had already done what other artists that weren’t on Idol had to do before they got their break, and so did Daughtry, Kris and Adam also.

I know that other than Daughtry, we have to see how the others will do but I have hopes for all of them. I’m especially looking forward to David Cook’s second album. I think it will do well, especially based on how well the tour was received and what he is able to do with his current band.

Perhaps it was relegated to twitter which I am not a part of

Perhaps. But, I’ve been seeing the tweets on a daily basis, and in fact, I just got one now congratulating the fans, but urging them to keep on voting.

Having said that, I never said it wasn’t an accomplishment. If fans galvanize to get somebody to #1, well that’s a particular sort of accomplishment, I think. And of course, there are folks outside of the bubble voting too.

Plus, if you look at the rest of the stats I posted, making the digital top 20, reach the Top 25 of the Hot 100, the deets paint a well-rounded picture that LLWD is a hit.

    Congrats Kris!

No. 1 video on VH1, LLWD is almost at Pop Top20 and is in Hac Top10. Adn LLWD is gold already!

I think all these good things definitely will help to increase the album’sales…Thinks looking good for Kris :)

  • Eileen99

The successful run of LLWD on many levels (VH1, radioplay, sales) has been very gratifying to witness considering its slow start and the pounding it took during “covergate”. As eager as I am for single #2, I’m trying to be patient and enjoy the LLWD ride.

Anyway, I’m thrilled for Kris & his team. By now, I’ve come to expect Kris to be a slow starter, but a consistent grower, and while it’s a little angst-inducing at times for fans, it seems it’s his pattern. I agree with Jim who said he expects the CD to have legs.

  • sanrio76

    Thanks Babybelle! I’ll try it. : )

  • tinawina

Yay for Kris! He just keeps chugging along. :-)

  • sylvanaire

In addition to LadyMadonna’s list of things that go into VH1 chart positions, it was my understanding that the votes you cast this week, go towards next weeks count down. If that’s the case, and there was a call out to Kris fans to vote hard this week, he should stay near the top next week as well.

In any event, congrats to Kris and his fans! I would love to see him have a string of hits, and establish himself as a bonifide singer/songwriter. *big grin*

  • isisdagmar

Anyway, great for Kris (#1!) and great for Adam (debut at #11!). :)

  • lorismile

People just seem to prefer to buy singles rather than videos.

I agree with this, afterall, singles are cheaper. I have Adam’s physical CD and did not purchase the ITunes album. I did not buy the singles of FYE or WWFM as I already have the songs. However, I will buy every video he makes. So, I guess I’m a little different than most.

  • babybelle32

It looks like LLWD will have its usual weekend bump. It’s now up to #22 on itunes. It may not go up as many places as it usually does, since the charity singles are charting, but the rise in positions does show that it is selling more since the countdown aired.

  • vanjess38

Go Kris! You deserve it! *tears dripping down my face*. Just keep on doing your thing like you always do and you’ll see the end of the tunnel.

That’s great and it’s how I feel about the cd also. I think there is a lot of songs that could be hits.

I think that some people, me included, just buy singles until they are sure they are going to like the album, especially for a new artist. I’ve spoken to many people who didn’t think they would like Kris’s album ended up liking it after I told them how good it was, or that they heard LLWD. So I think it is building up slowing and that is growing also. And that this isn’t a bad thing.

Congrats to Kris! I saw the video this morning, heard the song twice last night (once each the big Top 40 stations in Atlanta) and twice today. I feel like it’s slowly taking over all airwaves around here.

And yeah, it seems like overall Kris’s and Adam’s videos have been really well-received (EW had a nice comment about the video in their issue). And it makes sense, they look well done, and they don’t rely on cheesy love stories.

Jabberwocky, thank you! Yeah, we’re pretty happy!

Peeps, the NFC Championship Game is a pretty huge deal tomorrow. I was telling my hubby about it (he’s a huge, huge sports fan), and he said that venue would probably hold 75,000 (not to mention the TV audience)!! Plus there’s a chance they’ll interview Kris. Even if it’s just the national anthem, that’s huge. So yay!

LLWD is now #22 on itunes.

Sure. I’m just responding to those who are claiming there are no fans organizing an effort to get the vote out on behalf of Kris. There is. And all the other fan bases do the same thing.

Yeah, I haven’t seen the video but it sounds like a pretty good video, but for sure it helps to have fan bases that vote for these things. That applies to the videos of singers who are non-Idols, too, but for Idols there’s definitely a fan base that helps get the videos to #1. I know that we voted for David Cook’s videos, for sure, and there’s no shame in it, no stigma. The countdown has always seemed to me like one of the more worthy places to vote for your faves, there are benefits to being seen on the countdown, plus it’s fun to see the video every week.

  • evanjane

My apologies to MJ. Wasn’t aware of street-teaming or whatever. I noted she acknowledged good fan-voting for Daughtry, as well. The word *crazy*, I admit got me a little well, crazy.

I still stand by LLWD growing organically outside the IDOL bubble and I hope it remains strong until the next single is available, helping CD sales.

Not one that likes to see all these polls and contest won by IDOLS. I find it a bit embarrasing. Again my apologies.

Haven’t read thru all comments yet, but I’m excited for Kris! Fantastic news!! Wish the single success could move albums, but in time… Maybe he’ll tour successfully and build like Cook.

Just wanted to mention something, my top 40 station in Tampa FL, 93.3 FLZ is doing an event with Kris in Feb and they NEVER play his song. (rude much?) I don’t ever hear LLWD on Florida stations, booo. I don’t think they’re snarky or snobbish, they play Archie once in a while so their taste level …nvrmind.

  • Maggels

I honestly believe LLWD has reached way outside the AI bubble.

  • Truthiness

I honestly believe LLWD has reached way outside the AI bubble.

Clearly it has based on his amount of radio play and how well his singles are selling. But that’s not to say that Kris’s being voted number one for this wasn’t in part, whatever percentage of that it may be, by organized efforts by his AI fans. It happens with all Idols, it will happen with all Idols in the future, and it’s not a bad thing, per se. And none of that precludes or is saying that non-AI fans like the video and are voting for it.

  • Maggels

Truthiness I was talking about the single not the video. I agree every idol fanbase votes like crazy to get their “idol’s” video to number #1. It’s part of the game.

  • marg

Confused….what is the structure/building in Kris’s video suppose to be/represent, sorry but I don’t get it! Like Kris & the song but don’t “get” the video, can someone please explain….thanks

  • Winks8

    Congratulations Kris and Kris fans!

  • JR Labrador

Once again I’m forced to conclude that Kris’s best marketing tool is his stupid little face.

ETA: Before it gets misconstrued, I meant that affectionately.

  • Mtlfan

marg, the structure/building is a huge digital clock to express the ‘every second counts’ in the theme ‘live like we’re dying’. At some point, Kris activates it and it shows the 1:45 seconds remaining to the song (i think) and there from there, there is a countdown shown on the clock

  • anovich

What a piece of news to see when getting on my computer after the Sabbath is over!!! So excited for Kris.

  • anovich

Once again I’m forced to conclude that Kris’s best marketing tool is his stupid little face.

ETA: Before it gets misconstrued, I meant that affectionately.

Anyone who is a Kris fan on ontd_ai should be familiar with this concept – they obsess with this on that site – it’s always good for a laugh.

  • J9BT

The important question is how does it relate to sales? Has anyone seen a bump on itunes this morning from either of the idols since the countdown?

I don’t look every hour at ITunes, but I think Kris was at #25 last night, and is now at #22, and that’s with the Haiti song at #1 that I don’t recall being there last night. That’s movement of 4 spots if you exclude the Haiti song. Not sure if that’s considered a bump or not, but it’s upward movement.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

anovich, are you in the US? (My Sabbath is tomorrow, so I’m confused.) Welcome to the party!!

marg: don’t “get” the video, can someone please explain….

This is how I see it ;) ..
This simple working guy in his old pickup truck, on his way back home from work…who stops for a while in a secret location to indulge in his dream & passion that no one knows about.

The ending – When the sun rises, it a new dawn for this man. Instead of heading back to his pickup truck, his old job or life, he walks towards a new beggining, a new day. He’s finally taking THE chance to try and live out his dream.

Also, I think it’s an homage to Kris Pre/On idol…. and the road ahead.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Reminder:

Eh, I edited my comment about the “expert”. I didn’t intend for it to become such a big deal.

    Carry on.

  • CathyMK

Just wanted to mention something, my top 40 station in Tampa FL, 93.3 FLZ is doing an event with Kris in Feb and they NEVER play his song.

Mandabutter, they may not be playing LLWD when you’re listening, but they’ve played it 30 times this week, up from 22 times last week. It’s #23 on their playlist. WWFM is #11 with 37 spins this week. The info is on this page at AllAccess, but you need to register (it’s free) to see it.

    http://www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/playlist/station/WFLZ-FM

  • ilovekrisallen39

I have to admit when I remember to vote for LLWD I do it three times a day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once at night. But I do forget and not vote sometimes. And I do know of one person on twitter that does mention at least once a day to vote for the song. But I don’t see to many that do at least those that I do follow that are Kris fans. I also follow alot of people that are other idol fans just to see what there saying. Happen if you only like three or four video’s, do you still have to fill out all 20 spots? I love the script and vote for them and of course I love Adam, Daughtry, Carrie, and a couple other vids buy that’s it. I usually only vote for at the most 5 or 6 vids does that mean my votes don’t count?

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

mj, you know how we idol fans like to over-analyze things!!

Hey, seeker, that’s pretty good! I never think too much about the video. I just enjoy the pretty scenery.

  • Pam

    Awesome. Congrats to Kris. :)

  • Maggels

Diane nice find!! I am so proud. BTW what time is the NFC game tomorrow? Want to atleast tivo it if I am not home.

  • babybelle32

marg: don’t “get” the video, can someone please explain…

The video pretty much goes with the lyrics, and it almost parallels Kris’ journey. This guy had not been following his passion, which was to be a musician, and then it was like he had an epiphany, and realized he could live his dream, but he needed to hurry up and do it, because time is passing him by.

The use of light in the video is very good, it starts out in the dark, indicating just how off the path the man is, but then the theme of light keeps being brought up. First Kris carries a torch, which doesn’t give a lot of light, but he’s figuring things out, and then he switches on the clock, and finally at the end we have the sunrise, which indicates that time hasn’t run out on him, it’s a new day and he is going to start following his dream. The sunrise is the best part, because it ends the video on a high note. A lot of the video is moody, which matches the song, but there is an underlying feeling of hope in the song, which you can hear in the first verse when Kris sings “It’s not too late.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

Maggels, Sunday evening, 3:40 P.M. PST and 6:40 P.M. EST. Fox life will be telecasting.

babybelle, kudos to you too. We should have had a thread for analyzing the video! (Maybe we did…I joined the party at MJ’s a little late this season.)

  • Maggels

    TY Diane :)

    Babybelle32 nice analysis. :)

  • Seeker

    babybelle32, NICE BB!!!!

  • karenc

Babybelle32, thats an excellent analysis of Kris’s video. I never thought about it like that, but I think you’re right and it does have a deeper meaning than I thought.

  • marg

    babybelle32…..thank you for the explanation.

  • http://MJO judes

Okay, I said congrats in the other thread but I’ll add my sentiments here as well!! Happy for Kris that his video is NO. 1- don’t really care how it happened .
What I’m trying to picture is Kris doing that “Happy Dance”- I think he’d probably do it with guitar in place as it seems like an extra appendage – he just loves it so much!!!

  • girlygirl

Since he’s on his way to New Orleans, maybe he’ll celebrate by partying on Bourbon Street…if h’s gonna party, that’s a great place to do so.

Also, I’m seeing a rumor on twitter that Kris is going to the Grammys (doesn’t say if just as audience member or as presenter or performer — just that he may be going). Has anyione seen/heard anything long these lines?

Lastly, nice to see his fellow S8 Idols so happy for him. Adam, Matt and Allison have all tweeted about Kris being #1 on the countdown.

  • babybelle32

Thanks for the compliments on my analysis of the video. I don’t know if it’s right, that’s just how I’ve read it.

I hope Kris gets to perform at Clive’s pre-Grammy party. I doubt he will be on the telecast, but it would be good to see him take part in the MJ tribute. I think his version of Man in the Mirror would touch a lot of people.

  • mandabutter

Yay Idol tweets congratulating fellow Idols. Hope Chris Daughtry thinks of something funny, he did kicked out of #1. HA. (I don’t follow CD so u guys would have to mention something here.)

And thank you CathyMK, i wouldn’t even know where to look that info up. I must not be listening long enough at peak times, I did know they play Adam’s WWFM fairly often between Gaga, Gaga, Swift, Fireflies, Miley, and Jay-Z. lol

  • mandabutter

Oooh, Kris may attend the Grammys and Adam is doing red carpet for ET @the Grammys!! Exciting, just think if Adam has to i/view Kris on what he’s wearing….heehee. Sorry if someone already beat me to mentioning this possibility.

  • Ratna12

OK, I just read about this right now. Congrats Kris !
I’m going to DVR the countdown. I spent uuhmm just say.. more than once voting yesterday. he-he.

Kris, good luck to you tomorrow singing that difficult song. I’m going to tape it and then go here just to see if you did OK or not.
Watching someone singing the anthem is always nerve racking for me.

  • calico

Like Kris & the song but don’t “get” the video, can someone please explain….thanks

The thing I love most about this video if that Kris is, both literally and figuratively, the bringer of light. First he drives the truck whose headlights punch a whole in the pitch black desert night, then he ignites a torch which flares with greater intensity, next he plugs in the digital clock that lights up the entire area, and finally he banishes the darkness completely (runs into the rising sun). That’s some nice symbolism there. This video was a wonderful surprise. I continue to be impressed with how Jive is handling Kris.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

Ratna12, kudos for your honesty! Kris killed the national anthem last time (although he said he started off lower than he meant to), and I’m sure he will this time too!

  • J9BT

Kris, good luck to you tomorrow singing that difficult song. I’m going to tape it and then go here just to see if you did OK or not.
Watching someone singing the anthem is always nerve racking for me.

LOL – me too, at least watching someone I care about.

Oooh, Kris may attend the Grammys and Adam is doing red carpet for ET @the Grammys!! Exciting, just think if Adam has to i/view Kris on what he’s wearing….heehee.

I think that would be like Ryan Seacrest commenting on what Simon Cowell is wearing, right? Kris seems to keep his wardrobe on the simpler side!

  • girlygirl

    J9BT

LOL – well, Kris did dress up for the AMAs with that grey pinstriped suit. So if he does go to the Grammys, he probably won”t be wearig jeans and a t-shirt, henley or plaid button-down.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 CathyMK

The thing I love most about this video if that Kris is, both literally and figuratively, the bringer of light.

I love that image, Calico. It sounded, from some of the things Kris said when the video first came out, like he had some input on the concept. Wonder how many of those images came form him?

Finally watching the whole countdown, after just watching Kris’ part this AM. There’s much angst from the Allison fans in the house whenever Orianthi comes on, since they feel like she stole Allison’s thunder as the rocker chick this winter!

really, really, really creative video. I love Kris anyway, but he really went with artists on this one. I think the boy has plenty of surprises for us in future — good ones!

  • savgal

SOOOOO excited for Kris, on many levels:
    #1 video on VH1 — woo-hoo!
Kris singing National Anthem before NFC championship — woo-hoo!
Kris hopefully getting to meet Brett Favre (Kris a lifelong Packers fan, and now Favre plays for the Vikings) —
AND I heard “Red Guitar” tonight at Home Depot, of all places!

I mentioned this earlier, but I honestly don’t remember if it was at MJ’s, but the NFC Championship game should be a huge event for Kris with approximately 75,000 spectators and then the television audience…so happy for him getting this opportunity! And if he gets to meet Brett Favre that would be really huge! My husband is a Packers fan too, and Brett was da man.

  • Maggels

Diane the NFC game will be seen by millions. Last weeks games were seen by 25-30 million. I like football but it’s college (SEC football rules!!) that I watch. I am nervous though. I just want him to do well

  • ilovekrisallen39

Diane someone on tweeter tweeted that they saw him at the airport with his guitar.

As for Kris being spotted in New Orleans, here’s person who tweeted:

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 Diane

Maggels, I knew the TV audience would be millions, but I wasn’t sure about the number. 25 – 30M works for me! Don’t be nervous. You saw him the last time, right? As he stated, the only problem was he started out a little low. But I was a Cook fan last year, and honestly Kris did better than Cook…who looked like he was gonna pass out. Kris looks pretty calm here to me.

LOL, you wrote everything that I was thinking. Especially with the Kris fan board, but on second thought, I really don’t need to spend more time on another Kris board. I finally have a little life just because there was hardly any Kris thread the past several weeks.

Once season 9 starts, I will skim posts just to look for any scraps of Kris mention.

    Sherena:

How big of a deal is VH1? Honest question. And good for Kris!

Well it seems that being on VH1 the past few weeks may have added to single downloads. Also, being number 1 of anything has some merit, imo. :D

I’m also wondering if this helps on the radio some, esp. HAC, IDK.

  • Banished

To quote Randy:”props, man!”. I am proud of Kris and what seems to be the little engine that could. Admittedly, I did not think much of this video on first glance, but also haven’t seen a music video since the days of the genius of Peter Gabriel. (yes, I am older than most here..) This video has grown on me, just as Kris’ performances did last year on AI. Wishing him continued success and good news!!

  • cookcricket

    Hi Diane! :D

I’m listening to Red Guitar right now and have noticed several mentioning hearing it in various places on twitter. I lurk there sometimes. I love this song! I could just envision a video of it. Would be cool, but don’t think it’s going to happen.

ETA: I’m still amazed at how many good songs are on this album! I’m hoping we’ll get more than one more single and video!

cookcricket, I love that song too!!! One of Kim Allen’s friends joined my group, and she has seen the actual red guitar. How cool would that be? I’m still waiting to hear one of his songs when I’m out. I did notice my grocery store was playing music last week, so maybe I’ll get lucky!

kino, you are so right!!

  • Ratna12

Thanks Seeker and babybelle32 for the LLWD video explanation.
I never thought about it like that.

Yeah, I’m soo thankful for AI and for incorporating the use of instruments starting in season 7 (?), because if not because of that maybe Kris would not have tried out and we’ll miss knowing a Kris Allen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 ai_fan

I love Idol so much more with the instruments. That was the best move they ever made and I’m so glad those intruments brought us Kris!

I heard LLWD a couple of weeks ago in a Cato’s clothing store! Stopped, sang then resumed shopping!

Yep and yep! Season 7 was it and when I watched the entire season for the first time. And Kris is certainly someone I would not have wanted to miss out on.

I have yet to hear one of Kris’s songs while I’m out. It took forever to hear LLWD on the radio, but now I hear it all the time.

I don’t. But then the only time I listen to radio is in the car so this limits the times I can hear it. At least I can listen to entire CD any time I choose, but I’m wanting others to hear it too. :D

  • Mtlfan

Thanks Seeker and babybelle32 for the LLWD video explanation.
I like the symbolic; it’s a good fit.

Absolutely, and it brought different types of singers to AI.
Now, not only singers with big ranges in notes have a chance.
I truely believe that Kris winning last year changed things (hopefully).
It should be interesting to watch AI9. The Jason Castros, Brooke Whites type of singers. I like diversity.

Can someone explain how VH1 Top 20 Countdown works? (voting)”

    http://www.vh1.com/shows/series/top_20_countdown/vote.jhtml
Go to this site and you’ll see a list of music videos by artists below left and a grid on the right side. You can the read the instructions covering the grid and then close that window. Then you can scroll up and down the list and put your favorite music videos from the left side to the right from your favorite #1 through#20. Use your mouse to put each one in the slots and then press submit. You can just do 1 or 2 or however many you want. Doesn’t have to be all 20. If Kris is your favorite, then put him in #1, etc.

  • maturin

Can someone explain how VH1 Top 20 Countdown works? (voting)

The online voting is not the only factor. VH1 like any TV channel makes its money from advertisers, who want viewers, and don’t benefit from people going to a website and clicking millions of times.

Therefore, VH1 wants hit songs they think are popular with more then a hardcore fanbase. They decide which songs are added to the countdown in the first place by chart popularity and by the demographics of who they think watches–eg, almost no rap and hiphop or harder rock, even for very popular songs, and lots and lots of songs charting well on HAC format radio.

They do add some variety to the mix, with occasional videos of new songs that they think might become popular but aren’t big yet. But many of these vanish relatively quickly.

Every year fans rage because they can’t get certain songs on the countdown even with organized voting campaigns, and because VH1 will also remove a song from the countdown if it is falling a lot in radio airplay.

Right now, Kris and Adam are doubtless benefiting from online voting, but also from the rising popularity of their songs on the radio.

  • mika1234

    Thank you Cher.
