These songs are from an album Kris Allen recorded called Brand New Shoes. The song “Brand New Shoes” goes on forever, but I like “Beautiful Moon” and “Wastin’ Time”. He does have a Mrazzy vibe…

THIS is what I’ve been waiting for from Kris. I just felt he had more in him that we weren’t seeing, especially after I found out that he plays several instruments. Whether he leaves AI tomorrow or shows up in the finals, I will be buying his music if it has this sound.

I agree that Brand New Shoes is way long.

Does this change your view on Kris, mj?

Thanks for putting this on your blog!

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

“Waistin’ Time” is an ok song. The other two are just elevator music. I think he has a real nice voice, but could sure use some management to steer him into a somewhat better direction.

  • ohreli

Lambert and Gokey may be the front-runners right now, but they also come off a bit pretentious, and their “buzz appeal” may soon wear off. If Kris Allen could pick a song that would give him that “Imagine” moment, he could zoom to the Idol finals. He has a beautiful soulful voice, good looks, comes off nice, charming and unpretentious—everything Archuleta had. He just needs to take some risks, and give that one performance that makes people take notice. Personally, I would love a Kris Allen-Alexis Grace finale!

  • Hazehel

I can see Beautiful Moon done by other singers and I think I would like it, but not when it is done by him. His voice isn’t interesting enough to make me want to buy his music.

  • AnoopFan

He’s a pretty face, but he is just so boring, and his voice isnt anything special.

  • holeighannie

Mmhmm…thank you for posting these! I was hoping some of his originals would start floating around.

  • shuey

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Beautiful Moonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a very cool tune! to bad the drummer sucks bad on all the tunes.

  • lovepeace

I didn’t like the songs. Too boring. I love the song he sang on AI “man in the mirror”, I’d like to see him do more stuff like that. Maybe people were right he is like jason mraz if thats true then good for him then, maybe that’s his genre or since his religious he might do religious songs.

  • weese

I like Waistin’ Time. He should do really well this week with country. Kris seems to have a lot of potential and more versatility than some of the others. I hope he sticks around for a while.

  • background_noise

Thanks for posting these! I think Kris would be a real stand-out in the contemporary Christian music field. Can’t see him as ‘pop star’ though.

And, heck, yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing him take Gokey’s “spot” in the finals.

  • chc

kris is becoming my fav along adam and danny and allison and scott, ok i have 5 favs, any real musicicans here.. especailly the ones that say that he is boring, go krissssssssss!!!!

  • weese

He’s cute, he’s not afraid to choose songs we wouldn’t expect from him(man in the mirror),he’s doing unusual arrangements (acoustic guitar on a MJ tune with bandzilla), he can dance —So how does he overcome the boring factor, do you think by choosing less repetitive songs?

  • May

Not bad. They do have a slight Mrazzy feel. His voice is pleasant but not fantastic, but I’m still looking forward to hearing what he does next. He was one of the only contestants who really attempted to put his own personal stamp on a Michael Jackson song and change the vibe a bit. I’m hoping he continues to do that and gets the chance to improve. Also, the next time he plays the guitar on stage, it would be nice if we could hear it.

  • Suzanne

thanks so much for putting these up MJ. I only listened to Beautiful Moon so far, but I really loved it. There’s a lot more to Kris than we’ve seen on the show, which is really exciting to discover. there are songs by John Mayer and Jason Mraz that have this same sort of feel. Personal, honest, not manipulated by “hit makers.”

I liked him before, but now I love him. I hope a lot of people play the songs. Must go listen to another.

  • SOcal_idol

Cool, i love kris!.. i wish he would use some more changes in his voice, like low and high pitchs.

  • Tess

Couldn’t make it all the way through any of Kris’s songs. Just didn’t feel the pull or couldn’t wrap myself around the song. To me, his voice isn’t unique enough…I really can’t remember what it sounds like after I stop listening to it; it just doesn’t keep playing in my head. I’d like Kris to stick around for awhile. It’s nice to have someone in the field who isn’t controversial, and is that nice rest between all the drama.

  • julieitis

He’s so darned cute, and I’m so tired of the rest being shoved at me. I think I’ll start voting for him.

  • Lys

    Dark horse. :)

  • flynnsgirl

Kris seems to have an OK voice, but I see absolutely zero charisma coming off him. He is passably cute and what else? Guys like him are a dime a dozen. I think he is incredibly boring.

  • Michelle

    I don’t care, I like him. And look, he’s a songwriter too!

I’m not feeling Danny or Adam. Kris, along with Allison and possibly Matt, are who I’m pulling for — even if they are *doomed*. I hope they stick around awhile so I can watch to like instead of watching to hate on the two chosen ones.

  • Lys

^Michelle, our tastes this season are pretty much identical, then.

  • jpoppin

These songs are very good considering that he wrote ALL of them and had it produced by an independent label. I’m pretty sure he has grown since this, so imagine what will happen next time if he is able to get a respectable record label. I would definitely buy his music. I think he will be very viable in the music industry.

I think Kris has so much to show us still. His confidence grows each week. I hope to see him around for more weeks so we can witness a star being born. Down to package artists!

  • calimari

I liked the same 2 MJ did. They are all a bit in the “adult contemporary” range – I’d like to see him do something more upbeat as well because I thought he brought a lot of good energy to Man in the Mirror the 2nd time he sang it – when he was all geeked up about making it thru. I’d like to see more of that. I do put him in as a dark horse – not to win, but to go deep. I think some of the early favorites will suffer from being the same thing every week. It happens every year.

  • kerfuffle

Wah! I’m dying to hear them, but can’t until I get home. (No sound on my work PC. Grrrr!!!) It sounds like I’ll either love them or hate/be-bored-by them. I’m so hoping for the former.

My faves are Kris, Matt, Allison, Alexis. Probably Adam too, because I always look forward to what he’ll do. (I hope he doesn’t scream once this week.)

The rest are pretty meh for me. (Though I do like Sarver’s voice. He should do well this week.)

  • gingerly

I’m still only interested on how they bring it on Idol. All the previous stuff is good and well, but it’s only us uberly obsessed fans that even hear this stuff. The majority of the voting public doesn’t even know this extra music exists.

  • Layla

meh…pretty generic sounding but better than I thought. He is no Mraz.

I don’t see the cuteness that othrs are seeing. He looks okay…nothing special. He certainly doesn’t have that x-factor.

  • http://www.AuthorsTeam.com ghostwriter

I kinda liked these, even though they were also bland. I think Kris has the prettiest tone of the men in the competition– with Alexis being the only woman whose tone i like.

These all used double tracking, which gets rid of all the warmth in Kris’s tone. I think he may be top 5.

I still don’t get Lil Rounds. She’s okay but not close to spectacular. It’s hard to live up to Fantasia and JHud. (I never got London, either– even numbers like All by Myself had pitch problems to me.)

  • Cakenbake

I like the fact that Kris is a song writer also. A songwriter is a plus for an artist. He is not singing someone elses music but his own.
I like the idea of singing to the moon. The songs grow on you after you listen to them for awhile. I like them. He has a cool vibe to him. Thanks for posting them MJ.
I notice the people who don’t care for the songs are fans of other guys on the show…lol. What songs have they written?

  • Cakenbake

Why do people think that a someone ‘religious’ is going to do ‘religious’ music? Did David Archuleta, Crhis Daughtery, Brooke White, Clay Aiken and Melinda Doolittle do ‘religious’ music? They have a strong religious background. I don’t hear any ‘religious’ feel to any of these songs. That is a stereotype.

  • s0x_prisoner

    I really like Beautiful Moon!

  • Hazehel

No idea if this has been posted before, but here’s a YouTube video of him performing O Holy Night –
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTvesVoV64g

  • cay

Meh. I’m not in love with any contestants previous music. Matt’s got 2 cds out too.

They all need Idol for a reason – especially those that already have put out cds like this. Mostly, they need help with writing and picking the right songs. That’s why they haven’t made it so far, and it’s exactly what Idol is designed to do.

I think we see the performer, then hear the music and it sounds better than it is. I still think that all the professionals out there can make any of them sound good. My personal opinion is that Kris is more enjoyable on the show. Maybe it is the very cute visual!! But, I think he can do better and match his personality a little more. He’s be a great contemporary christian artist, but just as easily a pop star given the right song.

Another one I can’t listen to yet. O Holy Night is my second favorite Christmas carol (after Silent Night). And to sing it well, you have to really be able to ummm … sing well. ;)

    Glory notes, y’all!

Thanks, Hazehel! I’m forwarding this home. :thumbup_tb:

  • jpoppin

edit: you are now in moderation. congratulations!

  • Cakenbake

…and speaking of ‘religious’, wasn’t Matt Giraud’s cd a ‘religous’ one? So for those who think that Kris and Danny are the only ones with a religious music background there is also Matt.

  • Cakenbake

    edit: also, now in moderation!

  • weese

When I watch Kris perform I don’t think he is boring at all–he’s not dramatic like Adam or gross like gokey but really fun. I just watched all of his performances–lots of off key moments—but they just didn’t bug me cause of the joy he was expressing while he was belting them out. He has performed three Michael Jackson songs–we actually haven’t seen him do anything else yet. Now I am looking forward to tonight.

  • BootStar

The people calling these songs boring probably donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even like this type of music. He has a relaxing vibe to him. Please go listen to your overproduced synthesized mainstream music, while I enjoy the music of a talented musician.

Kris isn’t my favorite, but I think he did a nice job on these songs. There is something rather bland about them, and him, however. His voice doesn’t really stand out for me, yet, although I do think he’s a good singer. And, for the record, I don’t listen to much “overproduced synthesized mainstream music.” In fact, my iPod is loaded with mainly folk and Indy artists. I love Mraz and Mayer, but think Jack Johnson is boring. I’ll take a more unpolished voice and great lyrics from someone like Amos Lee or Joshua James over Jack Johnson any day. So far Kris reminds me more of Johnson than any of these others, but he has several weeks I’m guessing to win me over.

  • soundscene

I’ve come to really like Kris. I’m not over the moon about any of the contestants, but he’s got a style that I like. He dances around, he tries to engage the audience. I’m not getting a boring vibe about him at all. He’s not OTT like some others, but I think there’s room for more acoustic-y musicians in top 40. Jason Mraz broke through with I’m Yours and Matt Nathanson finally caught a break with Come On Get Higher. Eric Hutchinson might have a Hot AC (and potentially top 40) hit with Rock & Roll (so far my top 40 station makes up 1/3 of its spins, but hey, they play stuff early). Gavin DeGraw and Josh Kelley could come back with a vengeance, you never know. More of that kind of stuff could catch on, and not every one of those guys has Mraz-vocals. There could definitely be a place for Kris on top 40.

I think he could be one of the dark horses to upset the chosen 4 for a spot in the top 4 or 3.

Very nice. Screw “the-fixed-top-4″, Kris Allen is on his way.

Here’s another one. It’s the same version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ that Jason did last season:

I still prefer Jason’s version, but only slightly. :)

  • gabam

Thanks for posting the songs, MJ. Are these available to purchase? Is there a link that you could post where we can buy the songs, that would also help your site like you post for iTunes and Amazon?

This is the first time I have even considered purchasing any music from anyone from Season 8. I love the last two songs. Loved his voice on them. Kris may be my only hope for this season. There was no screaming in the songs. YAY!!!

Michelle and Lys– I’m pulling for the exact same contestants also.

Although I have to say, Kris’s pre-idol music is a LOT better than Matt’s.

  • Lys

^Hmm, I didn’t even know Matt had pre-idol recordings… Guess that says something about how high on my favorites list he is, lol. But he is there. :) *runs off to youtube*

Hmmm….of you want to keep Matt on your favorites list, you may not want to check his pre-idol music out. haha. Sure it’s independently recorded and everything, but it’s still pretty terrible, imo. (And I like Matt.)

  • Danica_K

Nice songs. Kris seems a genuinely nice guy, and he’s cute in a very ‘puppies and kitties’ sort of way.

He’s no Jason Mrasz. And while the songs are nice and quite pleasant to listen to, they seem very adult contemp radio which I don’t think is the market he’s looking to crack.

I dunnoh. I really like Kris. So far this season it’s Kris, Anoop and Megan for me.

  • yummystars

Wow, Beautiful Moon, I like it and I like his voice.

  • AC

Kris is my favorite and I hope he wins, but he’s being overshadowed by more powerful (and annoying) personalities. I like his musicality though! =)

I think if he polishes up his songwriting with some more catchier choruses, he can break out and be successful. He reminds me of those VH1 You Oughta Know Artists… in which most are singer-songwriters with good songs and they end up on the radio (even though most people would recognize the song and not the person)

  • dante

I’m not feeling Kris yet but maybe tonight will change my mind?

So far Adam is the one….

  • yeahyeahsure

    WUV him! :wub_tb:

  • Skylark

Any comparisons to Archuleta do NOT serve Kris well. He is just not in the same league. IMO.

  • soundscene

Any comparisons to Archuleta do NOT serve Kris well. He is just not in the same league. IMO.

Well, vocally they aren’t much alike. DA does, however, love the Mraz-ish music and tends to lean in that direction when writing songs.

The only reason anybody compares him to DA, though, is because they’re both cute, smallish guys who look like they share a stylist.

Except Kris’s hair last week which I would liken to a rat’s nest.

  • bean99

I like more than one guy this season and Kris isn’t one of them. I find him to be boring and bland and feel his looks are what’s kept him here so far. I have a feeling he was in the bottom 3 in votes last week so will have to step it up tonight. I think his biggest problem will be Matt because I don’t see both of them lasting for long.

  • abbysee

The thing for me is that to win this thing, or even come close you really have to be distinctive. Almost all of the idol winners were distinctive. I don’t even like Daughtry that much, but when I hear his voice, I know exactly who he is. Same with Ruben, Fannie, Carrie, certainly Kelly. I just don’t get a wow, that’s Kris Allen feeling. It’s nice, pleasant, but to coin a Simon phrase, I am not jumping up and down. I think his cuteness and singer-songwriter vibe, distinguishes him from the fodder, but I don’t know if he has enough of any one great attribute to make him worth picking up my phone to vote for him.

  • ShariG

I seem to be in the minority, but I really like Kris Allen. I like his voice. I see him more of a James Taylor kind of guy. He is laid back, he has a lovely voice, is a good guitar player, and on top of it all seems to be a really nice guy. I look at every other contestant this year and see someone already out there that does what they do as well or better than them. I do see an Adam-Taylor Hicks connection given their over the top style and Taylor has had limited success, although he makes a great Teen Angel in Grease. Lil Rounds is a lot like Fantasia and again, she has had more of a Broadway career than a Top 40 career and there is similarity with Syesha, but I think Lil has the passion and emotion of a Fantasia while Syesha always seemed a little cold to me. I don’t actually hear the Jason Mraz resemblence with Kris. I think Jason Castro was going for that and didn’t quite do it, or his own spin was more powerful, not sure which. I am hoping Kris does come out with a stand out performance. I would like to see him stick around. Thanks for posting some of his music. He’s a talented guy. Still, no one this season comes close to a David Cook or a David Archuleta for me, and I wasn’t an Archie fan. Still the talent from our two Davids of season 7 was undeniable.

  • Lys

The only reason anybody compares him to DA, though, is because theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re both cute, smallish guys who look like they share a stylist.

That, and they both have this thoroughly wholesome vibe about them. But yeah, other than that, that’s about it. :)

  • hypertwink

While DA has the better voice, Kris sounds the more current. Despite Archie loving him some Mraz, it’s still up in the air if he can succeed in pulling off Mraz (since I have yet to hear anything of Archie’s that is in the neighborhood of Mraz or Jack Johnson) while Kris Allen does have that quality.

Wasting Time approaches Jason circa Waiting For My Rocket To Come

  • risalea

Looking forward to hearing Kris perform tonight…he’s from Conway, AR….he’ll know how to do a country song right! : )

“Works For Me” has a Mraz-vibe. I could totally see Mraz singing that song. “Somebody Out There” isn’t quite Mraz (he doesn’t really do straight ballads), but it is an acoustic singer-songwriter-type song. DA also does an amazing cover of I’m Yours in concert. The kid can pull off a lot. Plus, I don’t see how DA isn’t current given his post-Idol career thus far.

I think Kris is current–his vocals don’t have to match what is currently out there as long as his style does. And I think it does.

  • kerfuffle

Yay! Kris killed it (in a good way) tonight. imo, of course.

  • eveh

Ah shoot. I liked Kris a lot better before I heard those songs. They were a little boring to me. I don’t think he will outlast Matt, Danny or Adam. I don’t like Adam and I don’t think he belongs on this family show. I worry every week, that is going to do something obscene.

  • Diane2

Boring??? I dont think so. I have to wonder what people are looking for when they think he is boring. He is just not over the top like others. As far as the songs…from what I hear that is a CD with 11 or 12 songs. I can’t think of many CD’s I have ever bought that I “loved” every song. He did not pick 3 songs listed….maybe they are not his best work. That was over 2 years ago. I have personally been to a “Kris Allen” show in NW Arkansas and he is anything but boring. He is an amazing vocalist…but also a great guitar player and pianist. My favorite song at the show he sang was one he sang sitting at the piano. And as far as him getting this far because of his looks….really…because bikini girl is gone. So now it is a sin to be nice looking and have a great voice. Some people kill me! I think of all of the contestants that I will buy a “Kris Allen” CD when the time comes……and it will.

  • ordinarygirl09

Kris is MUCH MUCH better than stupid David.

  • SajiNoKami

Awe the idol fans did not like season 8?
It was the only season i was sad i missed. Never watched idol in my life, nor did i care, and that is probably why i didn’t make an effort to look up Adam Lambert, when my ma asked me to, when the show was actually going. Even the RS that showed up in the mail [and i kept it, the cover said: 'keep me'], it did not make me look at Idol. But then ma sat me down Nov 7th and showed me Adam stuff and i was ok, yeah so? But there was just a vibe that kept me watching. TBH, rarely do i like his stuff the first time i hear it, even now when i adore the kid. Then of course I needed to look into the show he was on and the whole everyone is mad at Kris Allen deal. I was determined not to like Allen at first, but then i watch AI on in reruns in January [oh look it is not a show of ballads like i thought]… and the Kradison, my goodness, adore them. Gokey too. They just have a vibe, I really like. Now when i was looking into the show, I did see lots of past idol performances and some i liked: Carrie’s Alone [got to love Heart], Cook… it was a theater number, very different from what he normally does, but i thought he was Hinder the first single i heard. And i do own Kelly’s 2nd cd, Hazel eyes, man. Now don’t get me wrong, these people are really good, i can understand why people like them, but for me personally, they do not have the it factor. I will listen to them on the radio and watch a vid, but will i buy a song or go to a concert..no. Adam was the first person i have wanted to see in 10 years in a concert. After watching Kris’ Manila concert online, want to see that boy too. Lately been watching Allison online and i want to see her. Gokey went country on me, if he went with a rock sound, Three days Grace, etc. I would be more likely to watch him.. But AI8: my idols of choice.
