Check out this ABC News Radio interview with Kris Allen conducted after he performed on Live with Regis and Kelly this morning in New York City:

Kris says he felt he grew a lot througout the competition.   He says his strategy was to “do me” feels he picked the right songs every week.

Kris says everyone “did their own thing” but nobody felt Adam Lambert had it “in the bag” including Adam himself.   Kris can’t wait to tour.

He feels like being able to play instruments and arrange music helped in the competition. “If it was just a singing competition, I don’t know how well I would have done,” he says.

Very nice interview. Kris is a very honest and down to earth kind of guy. Thanks for posting mj. :)

  • TwigLA

Thanks, MJ. Good questions from the interviewer and good responses from Kris. He needs to learn how to drop ‘like’ from his vocabulary, though. I’m sure he’ll get better in time.

It seems his biggest obstacle was just learning how to deal with being on TV and performing with the cameras. Once he got comfortable with that, he really was able to just be himself and show his talent.

  • Truthiness

Awww. He’s so nice. And much better questions this time, and so some good answers from Kris here. Not as canned as the others have been. Well done interviewer and Kris.

  • sauer1

I don’t know if it is just me but Kris sounded really tired. His answers seemed a little short. Maybe he is just a little burned out and overwhelmed at this point.

  • annabelina

Hm. The ABC News Radio is usually one of the better interviews, but I don’t know if Kris was just (still) super tired, or if the questions were just not great, but I didn’t get too much out of it. Some of the other interviews have been better this time around. I think with someone like Kris who’s very down-to-earth almost to the point of dryness, there’s really a need to ask some of those silly and ridiculous questions to get him out of his shell.

  • wand3rful

this woman managed to cover all the points in a cpl of min that stupid LKL interview attempted in the course of 2 hrs. she was quick and to the point.

yeah, kris’ “ands” and “umms” drive me crazy LOL its a big pet peeve of mine…doesnt fly well with me at the office. grrrr

  • hollyncali

Kris is so down to earth and humble I really respect him.

  • colette

Kris isn’t smooth, he isn’t glib and he clearly is not used to public speaking. So are some of my favorite rookie baseball players, and so are a lot of other musicians I like.

I mean, has anyone ever seen Ray LaMontagne live? He’s so shy and monosyllabic on stage and in interviews, he makes Kris look like Chatty Cathy! You can hardly get a word out of Van Morrison sometimes either.

I do like how he talks about his mission work. Nothing about converting people, just about helping others and learning from that. That does ground a person, to be around people who have much, much less than the average American, gives you a lot of appreciation of your own privilege.

anyway, Kris will do the boogie OK (he’s no worse than Rubin!) and get back to music soon.

and frankly, it’s just refreshing seeing a talented guy who isn’t all polished, scripted and styled for maximum media consumption. I think his genuineness bodes well for his music too.

  • sauer1

I don’t think he did a bad interview, I was just saying he sounded really tired and didn’t have alot of energy like he has in alot of his other interviews.

  • Adamdebomb

I am now officially sick of No boundries AND Mad World.

I caught Kris on Ellen-and some of the grammatical errors make me cringe. (Yeah, I know, I can’t spell….)

  • anna in vegas

Kris says everyone à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“did their own thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ but nobody felt Adam Lambert had it à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“in the bagà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ including Adam himself.

Maybe not inside their bubble, but just the rest of the world?

  • TwigLA

The interview portion of Ellen with Kris is up. I found it at this link:

Excellent interview and a lot of fun. Kris dances out :) She mentions that she had liked him early on in the competition. I only occasionally watch her show these days, but I do recall her mentioning Kris and that is when I started looking for him on the show.

I also found a video from Hollywood Week with him and Matt in their ‘White Chocolate’ group song. THE best group audition ever.

Maybe not inside their bubble, but just the rest of the world?

You could tell that Adam knew he did not have it in the bag. Did you see his face when he was in the bottom two? Also, at his High School, he said, “you guys are going to vote for me right?”

Adam knows he does not play well in middle america. But the top two is just fine for him.

I can’t wait until the billboard numbers come out. It will be interesting to see who sold more Kris and Adam and how they fit overall on the chart. Oh, and Allison too. Did you all download her version of Papa was a Rolling Stone, it’s up there with Heartless and Mad World.

  • jammasta

LOL, Kris got really big eyed when Ellen asked him if he was going to buy Katy something.

About the audio interview, this makes me curious. How well would some people have done if they didn’t have instruments? I don’t really want to think about that because most of my favorites used instruments, and not seeing them go very far would’ve been strange.

Maybe I was just reading all the media stuff and watching the gambling site odds.

  • colette

TwigLA — love that Hot Chocolate number! That’s one of Matt’s best moments, IMO. and kris is adorable, as per usual.

could that have been just one year ago? god, those kids have to age about 10 years in 12 months on this show…..

another thing I love, though it’s hard to find, is Kris singing “Man in the Mirror” on Top 12 elimination night. you can just see the confidence growing from the previous week. He obviously responds well to pressure — which is the opposite of me!

  • twinkle

here is a link with more of the ellen footage that wasnt in the interview or performance videos.

there is a really cute part where the girl that ellen sent to the finale red carpet gives adam and kris t-shirts with their names on it and they swap them so that they are wearing the other’s shirt. :)

I think playing instruments really adds to make the person not just a singer but more of an artist/musician. It definitely is a plus.

I bet he was still tired. Interview after interview. They keep the winner running around all over the place and it’s non stop. In fact, it’s been go-go-go for a year now for all of them.

Frankly, I don’t know how anyone can keep up that kind of schedule. Sigh, right–I could have done that eons ago….it’s b***h getting old. LOL

  • callitags

Thanks for posting the interview link. Is it just me or were some of the first questions borderline insulting? It got on my nerves a bit when she asked him about his favorite theory on how he “managed to win.” Sure, I know the media buzz had Adam winning, but he WAS in the top two, so he had at least 50% chance right there. And does no one remember that Kris was never in the bottom two, and only shared bottom three with Adam?

I found them a bit insulting. It will die down after 6 months or so…

lol, yeah, hello..he did manage to get into the top two without gokey’s/the christian vote. and even during top 3, he and adam were seperated by only 1 million votes . clearly, something was working for the guy. if anything, i think kris should point to heartless as a “game changer” and credit that performance for turning casual voters into fans.

  • KrisAllen1

I dont think Kris will have much input on his album. He even said that he doesnt know how much he would be apart of it because of the tour.I hope
he atleast writes some of the songs.

  • ShariG

I think it would be really nice if the people interviewing him would focus a bit more on him rather than on Adam. He has to be really tired of being asked how in the world he beat Adam Lambert? How many times can he say he thought they both deserved to win. He is not the kind of person who is going to say how great he is. At least she acknowledged he played instruments and selected and arranged music well. I did like some of her questions. Some were a little better than some of the other’s I’ve heard. In actuality, Kris was third in the top five, so he was never in the bottom two. He might have been in bottom three but he was also in the top three that week so it just depended on the way Ryan wanted to present it. Adam, on the other hand was in the bottom two. I do think they underestimated Kris and are continuing to underestimate him. He sounded great on Ellen today. I didn’t get to hear most of Regis and Kelly since it was preempted for the Supreme Court Justice appointment announcement. Looking forward to watching the tape here on MJs.

Kris was also on radio PLJ this morning – so he seems to have had a radio/TV marathon this morning. At PLJ he sounded pretty good I thought, definitely more spontaneous than on the ABC interview. I agree if he always gets the same questions, it must be tough for him to still sound super excited.

Hmmm–Looks like Kris is going to be labelmates with Jordin Sparks and David Archuleta. I really thought they’d go with Arista Nashville. Interesting. Check the label here:

I’m going to go look at the things posted in this thread–thx, everyone.

Kris had stated quite clearly that country music is not what he wants to do, so signing with Arista Nashville would be a dumb. Like he said in the RollingStone.com interview today:

    People say youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“soft rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ guy on the show.
    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice to hear à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rock.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

This is perhaps my 4th or 5th post on this blog and I have been watching this show this season due only to Adam and have not so far even mentioned another contestants name in my posts, however after listening to the radio interview I have to say I found it very offensive when the interviewer asked Kris how he “managed” to win, as though he had done something wrong.

I wanted Adam to win more that anything, but it didn’t happen and I have accepted the outcome. Kris has been nothing but kind and genuine the entire time, I love the bromance going on between them, and I found it just plain rude. It ruined the entire rest of the interview for me, and maybe for Kris too, all the Adam questions and accusatory tones are probably wearing him down.

How can he possibly give peppy interviews when people continuously work at making him feel as if he shouldn’t have gotten the title? All this media blitz about how Adam should have won is not going to help either of them. I just wish they would all drop it and treat them both with the respect they deserve.

    - kanye actually gave props to kris. I think it would be a great idea for them to have a collaboration. queen and adam then kris and kanye .. i like the fact that kris might work with a current artist, that might help him solidify his success..

“If it was just a singing competition, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know how well I would have done,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he says.

How many times over the past eight seasons have we heard: “this is a singing competition?” For Kris to even think about saying something such as this seems that he is doubting his own talent. It sounds a bit like low self-esteem. I think maybe he needs some image-coaching to help him out with this type of dialogue. After all, he should be proudly speaking of himself as THE American Idol.

    Thank you.

I liked both Kris and Adam and felt I’d be happy whomever won the top prize but this media slant of making it look like Kris didn’t deserve a win is just tiresome. Adam has groomed himself for this industry and charted out a plan for success, and he has thus far succeeded. Kris went in I believe not expecting to get as far as he did, certainly didn’t expect to take to the top prize.

I also think that Kris’ background in working out in the mission field may moderate his perspective. After all, when one has worked in some poverty ridden areas and helped people rebuild in disaster areas how seriously can you take all the hype that surrounds the entertainment industry?

Kris and Adam are co-winners in my mind.
