Kris Allen sings an acoustic “Come Together” at Little Rock, AR FOX 16 last night. Kris’s cool phrasing comes to the forefront without bandzilla drowning him out.

After the jump, check out videos of Kris performing at the Riverfront Amphitheater in Little Rock this morning

Ain’t No Sunshine

Falling Slowly

She Works Hard for the Money

  • insanoshano

AHHHH!! I was there at the Riverfront!!!!! IT WAS INSANE!!!! The most people i have ever seen at the Amphitheater….and i have lived here my whole life..It truly was an amazing moment for the guy..He was in awe!!

  • amiroamor

This guy can make any songs sound good when he makes them acoustic, since he doesn’t have that BIG LOUD voice. Kick Awesome

  • Miss Chaos

He sounded good, and wasnt doing that sideways thing with his mouth. Enjoy it Kris, you deserve it.

  • canadiandcfan

    fabulous!!

  • maturin

wow, very very pretty. I like seeing how the Idols do on the spot with these live performances in hastily set up spaces, no big production etc.

Haven’t heard Danny’s, but Kris and Adam both sound great.

  • ShariG

Thanks for the great videos. Loved his performances. What a great guy and talented singer. I am so hopeful he goes through to the finals.

  • mikeyb

Holy crap. I haven’t been a huge Kris Allen fan, but with just the guitar, you can really hear his masterful phrasing and delivery. Very nice.

  • tara8

This is pretty awesome, even more so than on the show. This is his thing, hands down.
    KRADAM FINALE ALL THE WAY.

  • cwy

Amazing performances. Thanks for posting. Watching these clips, Kris’ performances really give off the vibes of a Jason Mraz or John Mayer concert. Great phrasing and delivery. For those who complain of not being able to hear his guitar-playing on the show, hopefully you can finally appreciate his skills. I wish that he can do at least one performance on Tuesday like this — just him and his guitar, nothing else. More people need to appreciate this.

  • ShariG

Beautiful guitar playing, too. Our guy can really do anything. So glad he had a good turnout for his hometown visit. I would love to have seen him. Hopefully on the tour.

  • tara8

Oh and “Ain’t No Sunshine” acoustic? The best.

  • Dlynne

Great performance. Plus, he’s so stinkin’ cute!

  • ohreli

I hope he wins. We have enough LOUD in the business.

  • Lys

Yay, thanks for posting this, MJ! :) This is really where Kris shines. I love that both his voice and guitar are clearly audible… something the sheer volume of the Idol band rarely allows.

  • Michelle

    Thanks for posting these MJ!!!

  • westcoastgirlie

Aww, Kris does such a nice job with just him and his guitar, and I’m glad to hear he has so much support. Thanks for posting, MJ…any chance you’ll post the videos of Adam’s performances? :)

  • piperlily

I loved his Come Together much more than with all the electric going on on the show.
There’s something pure about Kris — where you need to clear out all the “noise” and get down to stripped acoustic to appreciate his style and talent.
I hope he’s in the finale with Adam.

  • ettacandy

I officially love this guy. What a sweet and talented man! the crowd looked huge in the photos… I’m so happy for him.

  • LovelyLady

Love these!!! I really hope kris makes the finale. Ohpleaseohplease. I love his acoustic sound…and his voice. Super!

  • maturin

I would rather have a finale where I think the element of surprise and high interest is . . . what they’re going to sing! And how they’ll sing it! And not culture clash/personality conflict.

I *liked* having a finale last year where both finalists were lovable to me, never mind Simon and his stupid “you should hate each other” nonsense.

An Adam/Kris finale I would anticipate with glee! Whereas a finale with Gokey would have me really disliking half the show, and no, Simon, that would not be better.

  • cookcricket

    Acoustic Kris is Kick Awesome!!!!

  • ShariG

Awwww. Great videos on the Little Rock Fox network. I love the sign that says Arkansas Eats Ice for Lunch. LOL They interviewed his wife who is really into this. They were only married last September so it has been a whirlwind for them. She is so proud. Also interviewed his brother who talks about how Kris lost his voice just before auditions and that even when his voice isn’t at its best he is better than most. They interviewed his mom and dad who basically said they are so proud of the person he is as much as his voice, that what you see is what you get, he is just a really great person. I know its his parents, but I think that is a part of his appeal. He just really is a genuinely nice guy.

  • adh1018

I LOVE HIM. That is all

  • http://dcmjlive.wordpress.com dcmjlive

I saw these videos earlier before these were posted as we were following the events in Little Rock via the net. I really loved the acoustic versions of Come Together and Ain’t No Sunshine. It’s so good how he was able to convert the versions he made into acoustic and still sound great.

Falling Slowly was done in a key lower though in the first few parts. A bit too low but it caught on at later parts.

And of course, my favorite is still She Works Hard for the Money. It was so nice to hear the fans singing along.

  • haruhi

Kris was “kick…awesome.” Loved the phrasing, and the acoustic sound.

  • gingerly

I can’t help but think this is the best thing ever for Kris Allen He gets to hear that fans love his take on songs. Hopefully he will ignore the f’ing judges who continuously attempt (unsuccessfully albeit) to throw him under those awful bus wheels. Just know judges, that many of us hear what we hear and don’t need or even want you to interpret for us. Sometimes you look, sound and act like asswipes.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

    I flove these.

  • risalea

Just getting home after a big Kris Allen day! The event at the Riverfront Amphitheater was amazing, and I have to agree with a previous poster that I’ve never seen it so full. Fox estimated 15,000 in the crowd. Kris was so humbled with the whole experience. He didn’t expect the turnout that he got. In Conway, his minister talked about how humility is misunderstood as thinking less of self, when it is really thinking more about others.

Keep your humility, Kris. It will serve you well and your home state is “Kick Awesome Proud!”

  • Suzanne

I never realized what a good guitar player he is. His playing is so drowned out by the band on AI.

  • cookcricket

    http://www.fox16.com/content/idolminds/kris.aspx

Looks like there are more vids up on the Fox link for Kris now.

  • skylight1219

I’d love to hear Kris and Jason Castro do an acoustic duet. They both have great a gift of unique phrasing when they sing. I think Jason said he’d love to do some singing or songwriting with Kris. Not to mention, they’re both as cute as buttons.

  • lizzy12345

Why is it that you have blogs about Adam and Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ hometown visits but you have nothing about Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Danny had 26,000 people at his concert, had a parade and sang the National Anthem at the Brewers Cubs game and you have nothing about it on your site. If you watch the videos from his local fox channel, you will see that he was very funny, likeable and overwhelmed by the support he received. They streamed live video of him from morning until night. It truly was Danny Day in Milwaukee. I have read your blog for a while and I know there is a lot of Danny hate here but you could give him his props for having a huge turnout and loyal fan support from his hometown of Milwaukee.

  • hollygo9

Everything about Kris is adorable including his homecoming. I haven’t enjoyed a homecoming this much since Elliott Yamin’s.

  • Menzel

Good job Kris but damn dude tune the guitar, you’ve got yer low e out of key.

  • lorenzo

He did really good… Adam really… REALLY took it easy today on his songs… for sure resting the chords… but Kris’s style wont hurt his voice… Adam’s songs today were really low key…

Kris did really great today, but I still think it should be Adam and Danny, they’re the best two since the start…

  • TwigLA

Loved following Kris around via Fox today. He sounded great and the fans there were awesome.

    Kris and Adam final two!

  • lakhesis

Haha he sounds quite sexy in this version of “come together”. Great voice.

  • cookcricket

Okay, something I was thinking about today…I really love everything about Kris! What a great guy! I would 1st, love to see him in the final two and truly wouldn’t be disappointed if he won by some miracle. However, he just doesn’t bring the controversy that Adam and Danny seem to bring and so that’s why I believe this line in “Come Together” is so perfect for him:

He’s got to be good-lookin’ cause he’s so hard to see!

Kris’s album is definitely the first one I would buy and that’s why I am behind him so much!

Anyway, kinda babblin’, but have to say his looks aren’t hurting him since he can be really great, imo. Esp., considering Idol’s record of always going for the big voices.

So in conclusion: Go Kris!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy for your great day!!! :)

  • primeminister

Wow, “Come Together” sounds really good. I wish he could have done that version on Idol!

    KRIS FTW! :)

  • primeminister

By the way…is Kris the first married Top 3 finalist on the show?

  • NOLA

Kris is a great kid. Glad so many of his fans turned out. WTG, Kris!

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

By the wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦is Kris the first married Top 3 finalist on the show?

Hey, pm ~ This version of “Come Together” is indeed amazing. I read on TWoP a few days ago that he is indeed the first married person to reach top 3.

  • Cakenbake

Love the cool vibe and his voice. Kick AWEsome. I like musicians and people who are laid back and cool. Thanks for posting MJ. It reminds of the David’s homecoming. I am glad that Kris has made it this far. It shows that musicians can also do well on American Idol. Kris is the Cinderella story of the season.

You can tell he is Market ready. His voice is really soothing and comfortable.

    Congrats Kris!

  • Cakenbake

You know what is AMAZING, Kris took a Disco song, yes a Disco song, “She Works Hard For The Money” and totatlly changed it into a cool arse vibe.

He did that in a week. That is pretty impressive.

  • anijsch

Kris did really great today, but I still think it should be Adam and Danny, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re the best two since the startà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

The problem with that is that we don’t know how good Kris has been at the beginning, because they haven’t show much of it.
It seems Kara was very excited of his Hollywood week performances, so he could have been in the best too.

  • elisa3da

I love how he pick ‘She Work Hard For The Money’ and sing it in front of thousands of people who strugglin during this bad economy.
It’s so appropriate and encouraging. Well done Kris !

  • luvnlife

I’m sorry, I think Kris and Danny are only good as opening acts and will be one shot cd wonders. Adam is the lead act. Always has been and he’s great and exciting to look at, whether glam rock or suit & tie. Kris and Danny are pretty much boring and don’t have enough variety or energy to keep me interested in listening to their music and watching them is just..well, boring. Not saying they aren’t nice guys. All three of them are, it’s obvious. Unfortunately, the only one with any real talent, marketable talent is Adam. Kris is getting the “tween” vote because he is just cute. Danny is getting the leftovers, the ones that find Kris too bland and Adam too over the top.

  • AC

I don’t think Kris gets the tween vote.. since I’m not a tween! haha… I think both Adam and Kris have good careers ahead of them but on different tracks since I think they are for 2 different markets.

I love Kris- he may not have the loudest and showiest vocal, but he makes up for that in phrasing and making me really listen to a song and hear a story in it. He seems to have a really good ear for music and I think that will help in choosing songs or writing for his album. Go Kris!

  • monleo1705

Are you kidding me??! Listen to that crowd and how hysterical they are! If that doesn’t scream CD sales by the millions, i don’t what does. Btw, Kris is not far behind Adam in Itunes sales so it’s not just Adam who can sell records.

I can’t say much for Danny, but even Jamie Foxx can foresee Kris will have a great successful career! Adam i agree is talented with strong vocal range and pipes, but Kris can just pick up his guitar and sing in front of millions WITHOUT any other music accompaniment and still make it sound original and ear-pleasing! NOW THAT is true true musical talent. I LOVE KRIS!!! And I LOVE how the crowd is singing along with him as he performs….like a real superstar concert!!! KRIS ALLENATION!!! :laugh_tb:

I am happy for Kris that he had such a wonderful homecoming! Perhaps now that he knows how loved he is he will stop all the self deprecating talk and show more self confidence on stage. I hope so!

  • jmom376

I am another lurker coming out of the closet :} I have been reading MJs blog since last year, but I don’t think I have posted before.

I am a big Kris fan and am very happy to see all of the support that he has during his visit. It is great to see him out of the AI bubble and for him to see how much people really like what he is doing on the show (We all know that the big voices always seem to get more praise/attention from the judges, so it is nice for him to see reality). I also like Adam, so I am hoping for a Kris/Adam finale.

I have been reading a lot of the comments this season and the one thing that always comes to mind when someone says how this person out sings this one and so on, is that there is a market out there for all kinds of singers. I usually listen to Kris’ style of music so I have downloaded most of his songs and I can’t wait for a CD to come out from him. However, I am also looking forward to hearing what Adam comes up with and purchasing some of his songs (I usually don’t like the really loud voices but he has won me over with the risks he has taken and his awesome voice). In the real world, they will both appeal to two very different types of audiences and will do just fine (JMO). Just look at Jason Castro-alot of people discredited him last year because he didn’t have a huge voice, but he seems to be doing just fine in the real world(YAY).

I will be ok with who ever wins this year, eventhough I am REALLY hoping it will be Adam or Kris :biggrin_wp:

I guess I just think that Kris has the talent, but maybe if he doesn’t believe, it’s difficult for him to make others believe. I only voted once this year, and it was long long ago (before anybody who gets to go on tour), but I think I will definitely be voting my hardest for Kris now. I don’t know if he can make final 2, but his not making it won’t be because of me. That’s all that really matters right now to me.

  • anijsch

Perhaps now that he knows how loved he is he will stop all the self deprecating talk and show more self confidence on stage.

Imo this is more Simon’s propaganda then anything else.
Kris just mentioned onetime that his voice is not so powerful then the rest still standing at that point, but he never seemed unsure during his performances.
And only because someone don’t constantly have to stand in the center, he has not no self confidence.

  • cookcricket

^^^ITA anijsch, I honestly believe Kris’s self-confidence comes forth every time he hits the stage!

I think people are just buying into the Simon propaganda when they listen to his comments re: Kris. Especially after “Ain’t No Sunshine” and on.

I’m with Arkansas, “I eat ice for lunch!” Go Kris!!! :)

BTW, someone posted that we didn’t know about Kris from the beginning, this is by AI design not because he wasn’t good enough to show.

  • Lys

Has anybody posted this yet? Acoustic ‘Man In the Mirror‘. It wasn’t my favorite performance of his on the show, but I’m diggin’ this version. :)

  • hollygo9

It seems Kara was very excited of his Hollywood week performances, so he could have been in the best too.

Kris Allen, now and forever, destroys the excuse ‘I didn’t get as much camera time as the others’. He got virtually zero coming into the semi-finals and went top 3 (possibly higher).
If you’ve got it, you’ve got it.

  • cookcricket

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxJo7NUmtYo

Okay, I think Kris Allen’s brother loves him some spotlight! LOL! Proud brother intro above.

It sounds like Kris almost didn’t even get to audition for AI!

  • maturin

Here’s a massive sweeping over generalization, but why not! The judges’ confusion about Kris seem like a mix of cultural confusion and their pre-set ideas about music stardom. Acoustic singer/songwriters, male and female, have been on the rise for years as contemporary and cool. But these folks still conceptualize a sort of 1980s/90s glitziness–Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, George Michaels etc–as the epitome of pop stardom.

So long as it’s this set of judges and producers, makes it hard for them to deal with you vocally and stylistically if you’re a younger guy or gal who aims to join the Jack Johnson/Sarah Bareilles/Ray LaMontagne/John Mayer/Erin McCarley/Glen Hansard side of music.

And then culturally, they’re a bunch of LA showbiz pros. They honestly don’t get the sort of personality and context where self-help books don’t rule. Oddly enough, even though Simon puts down this dude for supposed lack of confidence, I think it’s kind of a really different confidence. While Kris seems surprised and joyful, on one level, to get this far, throughout the deal, he’s never seemed like one of the kids who’s desperate for the judges’ approval or on the verge of a breakdown from the suspense. He’s grown a lot and stepped up his game throughout, but seems to have an underlying certainty about who he is and how he approaches music. Which is pretty great.

  • hollygo9

    Bo Bice?

Pretty sure Bo didn’t get married until after the show. Oddly enough, Ruben Studdard is now the only winner to have married since being on the show.
Having the support of a family hasn’t hurt Daughtry any. Go Kris and Katy.

  • maturin

By the way, my comments on Kris aren’t a swipe at other contestants who do exude a lot of external confidence or charm or glamor either (eg not a dig at Adam). Last year my fave David Cook got slammed as being the one who Simon called arrogant, smug, overconfident. While I think that was a pretty big distortion of Cook, who is consistently gracious, the fact remained that he’s an ambitious and confident guy, and very verbal and articulate, all of which I fluved. Just think there should be room for many types of persona on the show–exhuberant, in Cook’s case, or glammed up and having fun, in Lambert’s, or winsome and low-key, in Kris’. (insert other faves as needed)

  • maracaibo

I think Kris has a nice talent, he can arrange songs and all, but there’s something that’s missing. He is not quite exciting on stage.
Maybe it’s because of the type of music he does, I guess, I just don’t see him as the AI winner.

His vocals are good but not that great. Many people out there have a voice quite similar to his. JMHO.

I think he will sell records though, even if he leaves next week, he will get signed.
So he’ll be fine, but I don’t see him as a superstar at all.

  • cookcricket

Ricky Minor called Kris a quiet storm who’s wonderful! I agree!

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s grown a lot and stepped up his game throughout, but seems to have an underlying certainty about who he is and how he approaches music. Which is pretty great.

I agree maturin. May he’s not seen as a “superstar”, and I guess this is what AI wants…I’ll be curious to see if America wants that as well. Probably so and that’s okay. However, I’ll be voting for Kris as long as he is there.

I see a quiet strength in Kris that seems a little rare these days, imo.

Btw maturin, I agree on your take on DC as well. :)

Dude, did you ever see John Mayer perform? How about Jason Mraz? Or anyone from that genre? That’s how they are! It’s the simplicity and purity of singing just with an acoustic guitar that make this genre of music unique and attractive to a lot of people. I’m sick of people calling Kris “not exciting.” Any more “excitement” would be OTT and a misfit for his style. BTW, people who sing the style of music that he does generally don’t have super powerful vocals or a “belter’s” voice. They are generally smooth and easy to listen to (again, Mraz and Mayer are two prime examples). I see Kris Allen as similar to the both of them, and the last I checked, they are both pretty big “stars”.

  • drea

Here is Kris reading the judges’ song choice (apparently from Randy AND Kara):

For me Kris is also a little bit like Taylor Swift and I think he can be as successful as she is.

  • ShariG

Gingerly, I am so glad to read that you will be voting for Kris. Last year we were a pair of Chicago area girls crazy about David Cook. Kris has not reached the David level for me this year, I doubt anyone ever will again, but he is by far my favorite of the contestants. I have been voting for him since the top 13. I know you don’t get interested typically until it gets closer to the end, but I am glad you are a bit on the Kris Allen train now. He’s going to need our votes. There is something about his voice, his smile, his personality, and particularly the way he arranges music that I just love. It has to be the whole package for me as it was with DC and I think Kris comes the closest to that for me this year.

  • ShariG

Thanks for the youtube link, Drea. There are lots of videos there by that same person. I am blown away by how great he sounds with just his guitar. And, he plays the guitar so incredibly well. He really doesn’t need a band. He sounds exactly the same out in an open air amphitheater as he does on the AI stage. What a performer.

  • ShariG

Maturin, I love your posts. I get that from Kris too. He isn’t desparate. It is a television show. It is an opportunity. He doesn’t take himself so seriously, but he has a quiet confidence that I find charming. There is no doubt in my mind he will be a big star no matter the outcome of Idol. He is mega talented and a sweetheart on top of it all. He’s a guy you just want to do well.

  • ShariG

Cricket, I think Kris’s brother is going to be a minister He is getting the crowd motivated. LOL He is certainly more talkative than Kris. Pretty funny.

  • Anya

“For me Kris is also a little bit like Taylor Swift and I think he can be as successful as she is.”

Gosh, I hope not. She is a vapid, tacky, gossipy, catty girl. If she wasn’t good looking she would be Taylor who?

And another poster claims that David Cook is the best ever! Not really! he may be the best i your opinion only. Remember, musical tastes are different.

I only voted for two contestants EVER, David A and Kris.

  • maturin

And another poster claims that David Cook is the best ever! Not really! he may be the best i your opinion only.

Which post is that? I see ShariG talking about him still being her number one using the words “my” and “for me.” And how much she fluvs Kris.

I mentioned Cook as an example of how Cook got criticism for being allegedly overconfident as Kris gets criticized for being underconfident *neither of which I think is true.” Explain please where is “David Cook is the best ever.”

Not really! he may be the best i your opinion only. Remember, musical tastes are different.
It’s a discussion board, muffin. People get to express their opinions without a little curtsy to you personally.

I don’t mean her personality and her whole history. I just see her as an example that you don’t need a big voice and the singer/ songwriter type sell’s also in a mainstream market.

  • wand3rful

i was pleasantly surprised by how well he sounded w. come together and man in the mirror acoustic. the more i hear from him, the more i am impressed. for me, he is the total package…great, sweet, understated personality, talent and looks. im a firm believer in “you dont have to shout to be heard”….

Totally agree with this. I’ve seen both John Mayer and Jason Mraz in concert and both of the shows were awesome, engaging, and entertaining. Kris is my horse in this race and I can see him performing shows of the same caliber one day. (Can you tell I like this genre of music? :biggrin_wp:)

  • Grammie Kari

Ricky Minor called Kris a quiet storm whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wonderful! I agree!

That seems like the perfect description. Sweetheart would work too.

  • Michelle

I think it’s just that singer-songwriters like Kris tend to put the focus on the music as the main creation rather than on themselves presenting it. It’s like they are merely the conduit for the song to come into the world. If that makes any sense…

I don’t really seem to have a set preference as to personality or so-called “confidence” level in my AI faves. My picks have been Blake, DC and Kris and they run the spectrum. I think the common thread has been I’ve liked their pre-Idol music (which also runs the spectrum, lol).

To me it doesn’t really matter if Kris becomes a “star”, whatever that entails, after Idol. I just want him to be able to make more music for me to enjoy :D

I’m glad the homecoming turned out great for Kris. He is such a sweet guy and totally deserves this. Kris and Adam are my favorites from the beginning and I believe they are the only 2 who are ready to make records right now. Kris has been consistent and has shown so much originality. Personally I like him over Allison (no offence to Allison fans) who has bigger voice but hasn’t had much original stuffs as Kris has.

Quiet storm is perfect description. This guy has a career no matter he wins or lose. His studio version songs are actually quite pleasant to listen to :happy_tb:

I was able to attend all 3 Kris’ concerts on Friday. 20,000 plus in Litttle Rock at 11:30 in the middle of a work day with thunderstorms ready to rain at any moment, the one at the UCA campus at 3:00 on a Friday with school already out and then the one at “SIMON” park in Conway at 5:30 with over 30,000 there. All were great!! He was in the zone !! I thought it was awesome that people would drive 4 hours to hear him sing 3 or 4 songs!!! There ws not a baseball game or anything else just Kris !! What support !! So happy for him !! He made all the media stops they always have to do etc. even took time to stop at childrens hosp. cancer ward to see a little girl out of the cameras eye. What a class act !!! Loved his shows all he stands for.He is so talented !! And YES I will be eating ICE by the buckets !!!

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just that singer-songwriters like Kris tend to put the focus on the music as the main creation rather than on themselves presenting it. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like they are merely the conduit for the song to come into the world. If that makes any senseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Makes perfect sense to me. :) I really admire how Kris is all about the music. With him, it’s not about being showy, or having the best back story… instead, he just walks out on stage, presents us with a beautiful song, and that’s it.

Kris is the real deal. He’s a grounded guy, knows who he is, and he has stayed true to his style of music, no matter what the judges hit him with. Tuesday night they’ll slam him again, but he must be doing something right….he’s still standing.
He has said he wants to do acoustic soul, very cool, but the Idol stage is more geared for a Las Vegas vibe, so he may need to work it on his own. He’ll be a star.
