Kris Allen Hits the Road With New Songs (VIDEO)

Kris Allen opened his winter 2014 tour in Watseka, IL last night. According to concert goers, he performed a slew of new songs from the album he is currently recording with producer Charlie Peacock.

Some of the new songs the American Idol 8 winner performed were “Paul Simon,” “Dance” mashed up with “I Want You Back,” “In Time” and more. He also performed old favs like “Alright With Me,” “Out Alive,” “Monster,” “Rooftops” and “Better with You.”

Kris introduced a new song, titled “It’s Always You,” as a ballad written with a college pal, Adam Hambrick, who has a co-write on Justin Moore’s new record Off the Beaten Path.

Kris closed the show with a song written especially for the tour called, fittingly “This is the End of the Show.” Kris said he wrote it on the fly but his band members thought it sucked so they changed a lot of it. It is not for the album. They call it the dorkiest song ever!

Thanks for posting this, MJ. All of the new songs sound promising — looking forward to hearing how they recorded them. Always nice to see Kris performing live :)

ETA – Looks like Cale is no longer the tallest guy in the band

Thanks for the new music! Kris has a way with melodies.

I just love Kris. You can’t watch or listen to him sing without smiling. Or in the case of ‘This Is The End of The Show’, grinning from ear to ear.

I can’t wait for the rest of the new songs to be uploaded. Really good stuff.

  • Indigobunting

Hoping Kris includes more Midwest on his tour stops, would like to see him live.

  • Madilo

I hope he finds success with this album :)

I hope the weather cooperates for Kris. He has a gig scheduled for this Wednesday in my area, which has been hard hit this winter. Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

  • Miz

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you too.

  • Miz

    This is so beautiful.

Of the 5 new songs (not counting the “end of the show” song, which won’t be on the album), I’m a bit iffy on the “non-dance dance song,” but I absolutely love the others–gorgeous melodies on all of them.

It was hard to hear the lyrics clearly on a lot of these, but here’s my initial take on what I think I heard: “In Time” is both hopeful and heartbreaking. “Beautiful and Wild” has a great beat and message. “It’s Always You” is an interesting take on the idea of loving someone so much it’s scary. And “Don’t Set Me Free” is funky and a little twisted–kinda reminds me of Gavin DeGraw’s “Sweeter” (only not as twisted as that song). :)

  • Miz

I’m loving all the songs. Now I have to listen to ‘Don’t Set Me Free’ again to see if I hear what you do.

  • MissMyEm

So far I really like all the new songs but as of now, Don’t Set Me Free is my favorite. I had a good chuckle listening to The End of The Show song. So typically Kris and his humor. However, humor aside….the harmonies are really good. I’m loving real drums!!! Can’t wait til they get to Cali.

Tonight’s show same setlist as last night but full titles.

    Kris Allen ?@KrisAllen 10m
Thanks for an awesome show Lansing!

  • wordnerdarchie

One of my fellow Cook fan concert travelers also is a Kris fan, and she was at the show in Lansing last night. She currently has 3 vids up and probably will upload more (given her past history of recording at shows).

Here’s “It’s Always You”. Check her channel for more.

Kris was on Fox8’s (Cleveland) morning show today. He sand 4 songs and had a sit down interview. He said he hopes to have the album out in the spring, but may be later.

#Thanks to @fox8news for havin me on this morning!

The station posted vids of all the performances here:

This YT vid has the performances plus the interview.

I am not a Kris Allen fan but I have to say I admire his tenacity and stick-to-it-tiveness in prolonging his career. It has to be a tough road out there, playing at out of the way venues, and working 24/7 to let people know you are still around and still viable. He must really love what he is doing.

  • Indigobunting

Yeah, I wasn’t a fan during Idol or first album-I thought he was boring. But he records well and is a good songwriter-I never fast forward when Thank You Camelia comes on, which I thank Amazon for the deep discount at Christmas a year ago.

I am also impressed with his artistry and work ethic. I wonder if there is any hope if a label on the horizon out there-I would think so-any of his fans know?

  • nncw

Thanks for the find – great sound quality. Lovely song.

  • lovetheusa1776

Just a beautiful performance – gorgeous song – Kris’s voice sounds better than ever – sings with such heart.

  • buffyloverlori43

My favorite of the 5 new songs!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait until the 21st when I get to hear him sing all of the new one’s live!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting the video, as well as the link. And thank your friend as well for taking them!!!!!!!

  • girlygirl

No news in terms of possible label yet. I’m wondering if Charlie Peacock may use his connections to try and hook him up, at least with meetings.

  • hoosiermama

Since I never get the lyrics right, I appreciate your take on the songs and I agree with all your comments! The dance song just doesn’t feel right to me, even with the nod-to-idol I Want You Back thrown in. I did enjoy seeing Kris’ “non-dancing”, though! :-) And the other four are keepers (especially DSMF and IAY)!

  • Ratna12

Love the new songs that Kris performed already, but I must say that I’ve been repeating Beautiful and Wild the most.
I just feel that Kris is such a great singer songwriter, he has a knack on writing great melodies. I’m a fan.

I listened to the Fox interview and his voice sounded scratchy, so I hope that he is not having a cold.

  • MissMyEm

And glad his fans are for his tenacity. If he wasn’t tenacious, we might have to be happy admiring from a far, so for me I’m glad he’s touring in the US as opposed to some out of the way foreign country I could never get to.

  • MissMyEm

Sounded to me like he’s just tired. Those shows start at 6 AM and he’d have to be there most likely by 5 AM. If his show ended at 10 PM and then they had to take down equipment, he might not get to sleep til midnight or later. Probably he’s exhausted. At least it would seem so to me.

  • Miz

Don’t forget they also had to travel overnight. I doubt he had much sleep at all.

  • Miz

I know he has offers. (no, I won’t elaborate) I don’t know if he’s willing to take any right now from what he has said in recent interviews. He is determined to do this album under his own terms and consider options once it’s finished.

Kris has gained a lot of experience in how the business works in these past 5 years and also gained a lot of friends and admirers in the business.

  • Miz

Kris absolutely loves what he is doing. Creating music and performing for others is what he was born to do and it is as innate to him as breathing.

My take, based on things he has said, is that he wants to bring music at an affordable price to people and places that normally do not get name acts. That’s why he’s priced himself at a rate that smaller colleges and venues can afford. No matter what someone’s opinion might be to the contrary, Kris Allen is a name act. Kris is constantly playing, writing, singing every single day with or without an audience.

It’s a little over a year since he had what would have been a career ending accident for most. But he did not let that stop him. In fact, against medical advice, he was out on tour within days working through the pain. He endured 3 operations and endless hours of painful rehab over the year, but continued to perform, write, record, and much more during it all.

Now he is releasing album #3 and what we’ve heard so far is pure lightening in a bottle.

  • Miz

I have a gut feeling that he will.

  • Miz

I’ve been seeing more dates being added. Someone mentioned last night a WA date for the summer. I hope you get a date close to you when weather is good.

  • Craigin

I wonder if he will try to connect him with Joy Williams’ (The Civil Wars) husband and get him signed to his indie label. They need something to do now that CW’s are on their never ending break… Peacock and Joy go way back. Charlie Peacock also discovered Switchfoot and originally signed them to his own label. I’m sure they still are friends- maybe he can get Kris a connection with Switchfoot who can get him a meeting with Atlantic (wishful thinking I know) or Sparrow (Switchfoot’s CCM distributer) but I will say that Switchfoot and Kris do have similar fanbases (not exactly the same but the CCM and Hot AC crowds do like them both) so that would be a good connection I think. Anyone agree or am I crazy? lol

Are there never heard of foreign countries that idols have toured in? Most that have the opportunity to tour internationally seem to tour well-known countries in Asia, Europe, as well as New Zealand and Australia. The people in those countries are fans too, or do fans only count if they’re in America? I also don’t know of any idol who did foreign concerts to the exclusion of concerts here in the states. Plenty of opportunities to see most of them here. Are they all playing in bars and clubs? Nope. But one good venue of 1500-3000 people can reach as many people as 10 or 15 club dates. These college dates that have the opportunity for larger audiences are great for Kris.

That being said, it’s cool for Kris fans to see him in a more intimate setting. I’m not a huge fan, the concert I went to on the last tour didn’t have a large attendance, but for those of us who saw him, it was fun and memorable.

  • girlygirl

Kris already has a connection with Switchfoot. One of the songs on his 1st album (Lifetime) was written with Jon Foreman :). However, aside from LLWD, he’s never gotten any CCM radio play and he has said several times that he’s not a CCM artist, so I don’t know if Sparrow would have any interest.

  • Craigin

Cool- didn’t know that! Well SF always says they’re not a CCM artist yet gets CCM airplay regularly. Aside from LLYD, Kris really hasn’t had label support for a single that would fit CCM (The Truth was a break up song and RCA did nothing to support Vision of Love- which would have been a hit at CCM I think) so maybe with the right push he could be a crossover artist if he wanted to be. Also, sometimes artists rethink their career focus after a few failed attempts in one genre or another. Maybe one day Kris will go CCM. Who knows….

  • MissMyEm

In answer to your question it does appear to me that some Idol singers choose to tour in foreign countries that not too many have heard of rather than do national tours on a consistent basis as Kris has chosen to do. That being said, as I stated, for me and perhaps for some fans, touring in the US is preferable. That’s because I live in the US. I didn’t say it was bad or wrong to tour in other areas I merely stated my preference. I couldn’t get to a small country in Indonesia. Or countries like that but if other can, more power to them. I also prefer the smaller more intimate venue because that’s where Kris shines.
