Kris Allen performs “Heartless”, yo, on the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series this morning. He shared the stage with fellow Idols Adam Lambert and David Cook (videos coming soon!). It was a veritable IDOL FEST PEEPS!

Kris and the band rock out….

…video after the JUMP…

  • Matt

My absolute favorite version of Heartless. Loved the addition of the electric guitar to make it more rocked-out.

    Kris killed it.

  • unique28v

This was a good version of heartless! My favorite so far. The weather looks absolutely beautiful!

  • babybelle32

I love every version of this song that Kris has done. Kris looked and sounded great, he was a little hoarse, but it was early in the morning, so it’s expected. I love how he has really grown into this song, and made it his own.

ETA, while I love Kris’ acoustic versions of this song, especially the ones where he uses his lower register more, I also like the addition of the other instruments, and the rock vibe.

  • mmb

It is a picture perfect day in NYC today and Adam, Kris and David were all terrific this morning at GMA….so much fun

  • Vada

Irony: Kris turned out to have the high energy song of the morning.

  • SharB

Thanks MJ for posting this. I can’t wait to see David. By far, he’s my one and only Idol. I love Kris and this rendition of “Heartless” was great.

  • Mtlfan

    :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

love it!! great outfit too! love that he’s wearing more bling than usual

  • ross

    Love

  • weareallinnocent

This “Heartless” was indeed fantastic. Congrats to Kris! Really, really terrific.

They all did great, imo! Starlight was beautiful stripped down. I’m SO glad Adam did something other than Mad World. Thank you Adam!

If only Cook could have done something (anything) other than CBTM. :-( But, he did it well, as always! I’d have loved to hear Lie, particularly with his acappella part. Oh well, another day… Maybe we’ll see a sales bump as a consolation. :-)

ETA: GMA also has the entire Tell Me Lies up with Cook, Kris and Adam. It’s fantastic!

  • Gerien

This version of heartless is the best I heard so far. I wish he could do this on the tour.

  • dietcoke

I love it! Great job, Kris!

Isn’t this the version he does do on tour, just with less band?

  • babybelle32

Kris, Adam and David performing “Little Lies.” http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=8275870

I love it when Kris gets into a song, he’s having so much fun interacting with the crowd and David’s guitar player.

  • Gerien

Isn’t this the version he does do on tour, just with less band?

Yup I wish the band would tone it down a notch for the tour. And the little girl holding up the Love Kris at 0.32 is so adorable!

  • wjmtv

    Damn, Krissie. That was fiiiiine.

  • lucy

All three guys did a great job this morning, as usual.

For the most part, the Idols can really really *sing,* and many, such as these three, are fine performers, too. So ironic that much of the “music” world disrespects the Idol alums when so many of them are way better singers and musicians than so much of the “top” talent out there putting on stadium shows and lip-synching on television. Clearly, the music industry isn’t very much about music, in some ways. I really don’t get it.

  • BestAI

I wish Adam and Kris could have sang more on LL, but I guess they need to save their voices for the concert. Adam sounded fantastic in that song.

  • happycamper

Kris sounded great this morning. I like his version of the song. Good for him.

  • BootStar

Kris sounded awesome, but did he steal that shirt from Ade on SYTYCD?

  • readon

Tell me Lies was my favorite of the morning. They should have aired the entire performance.

  • washpd

I so agree. I mean, just compare how so many of the “stars” who performed on the results shows this year sounded compared to these guys.

I love Kris’s “Heartless” this morning. I swoon every time he starts that a capella intro. It’s so beautiful.

Oh, and Kris totally looked like he wanted to be rocking out on his guitar during the trio performance (or David Cook w/ Kradam as backup singers). He was practically air guitarring.

  • cookcricket

I have to admit I didn’t want it to be “Heartless”, but he killed it!!!! Every. single. time. I watch Kris sing, part way into the song I realize there is smile plastered on my face that just won’t stop. Okay, off to check out some of these other videos. :)

  • tierbee

ETA: GMA also has the entire Tell Me Lies up with Cook, Kris and Adam. It’s fantastic!

I thought that was awesome, too – made me smile! They should’ve aired that whole thing, they all sounded fantastic. And great Neal guitar solo camera time (and lots of Andy, too). Loved that!

  • SuzforKris

What I loved about Kris “NAILING” it this morning was the importance of tying his win as worthy and re introducing him on television (not concerts, etc) to the viewing audience as someone who perhaps had more to offer than originally thought……………………….unknowingly he may have just picked up some new fans! No excuses (i.e. concert last night, one coming up tonight). He NAILED it!! I just hope is as proud of himself for this performance as all of his fans are.

  • Adamdebomb

Wow. Kris looked and sounded so hot this morning-I love the new shirt! It seems to me that he really took it up a notch performance wise-I was really impressed. Adam looked so gorgeous -he took it DOWN a notch. LOL.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I so loved him singing Heartless like he did here. I thought he killed the song and I mean that in a good way. I just love My American Idol winner.I loved when they were singing Little Lies and how he gets so involved in his performance. I loved Adam and David also. And David’s band is fantasic. All three guy’s were so Fantasic singing there songs today.

  • suebrody

May I marry all three of them? I guess Cook is my best bet. ;)

I didn’t realize they didn’t sing all of Tell Me Lies on GMA. I don’t know what they didn’t show…I guess I’ll find out when I watch tonight. It’s interesting how different they are and yet so awesome.

    *thud*

  • washpd

They didnt’ sing Tell Me Lies at all on GMA. They caught the end of them soundchecking it on the show, so you got a little of that. But, they didn’t show any of the actual performance on GMA.

  • wjmtv

I lurve Cookie’s shirt. That’s a great color on him.

Kris really looked like he was wanting his guitar on TML.

My fingers are crossed for that second album too! (As if they needed to be….)

  • 123abc456

Kris was great here. I loved it.

  • ladymadonna

I don’t mean to hijack Kris’s thread but since the question has been asked and Cook’s video hasn’t been posted yet, I’ll report that yes, since this morning Cook’s album is up 69 slots to #95 at iTunes and still climbing.

I just got back from the GMA concert myself and I must say it was a complete blast (despite my hangover and minimal sleep after last night’s epic Nokia Theater show). All three guys sounded amazing through multiple soundchecks and the live performances. Kris continues to wow me with Heartless. Folks that are dismissive of his win and his talent take heed – the guy is really fantastic and he had no trouble commanding the stage next to Cook and Adam.

  • Renina

Wow, I absolutely adore this version by Kris. Has to be my favorite performance of all 3 guys this morning…

  • gulfluv

Kris is great as usual, especially for so early in the morning. I always love to hear him sing. The crowd seemed like they liked all 3 of them this morning.

  • mmb

I’m sure this will be unpopular, but imho, after seeing all 3 live this am, Kris still really needs to work on his stage presence…he sounded good, played the guitar well and seemed to really enjoy himself, but there is something very “small” and “young” about the way he performs…David Cook seems like a man on the stage, definitely commands the stage (he really impressed me)…Adam is just a pure star, you can’t take your eyes off of him…Kris, to my eyes, still seems like a little pup…he is not as commanding or compelling….but maybe that will come with age and experience

  • girlygirl

The full video of Little Lies is up on the GMA site now. Hopefully someone will stick it on YouTube.

That was an interesting performance — David is definitely the rocker of the 3 guys. Kris was jumping around the stage like I don’t know what. I assume they only rehearsed this once or twice before performing it, so — not bad, not bad at all.

  • Q3

Irony: Kris turned out to have the high energy song of the morning.

Yes, he did. And it was a very nice way to start the morning!

My absolute favorite version of Heartless. Loved the addition of the electric guitar to make it more rocked-out.

This version of heartless is the best I heard so far. I wish he could do this on the tour.

It is different than the Idol competition acoustic version, but I think it is the same guitar and the same arrangement he’s doing on the tour. It’s still early so I may be missing something. If so, sorry.

Kris Allen – Heartless (Live) DC

  • jpfan

I’ll be happy when Kris starts doing new stuff. I wasn’t overwhelmed by GMA to say the least. Hopefully, the new songs can make it happen for him.

  • lucy

I’m sure this will be unpopular, but imho, after seeing all 3 live this am, Kris still really needs to work on his stage presence’ ¦he sounded good, played the guitar well and seemed to really enjoy himself, but there is something very ‘small’ and ‘young’ about the way he performs’ ¦David Cook seems like a man on the stage, definitely commands the stage (he really impressed me)’ ¦Adam is just a pure star, you can’t take your eyes off of him’ ¦Kris, to my eyes, still seems like a little pup’ ¦he is not as commanding or compelling’ ¦.but maybe that will come with age and experience

I think he can get it. He doesn’t have the experience the other two have in crafting performances for large venues, being a rocker and so on. David has tons of that experience now, and Adam talks in the LA Times interview about that being a big part of what he learned from theater — how to turn a song into a *performance*, a moment, a compelling experience for the audience. You can learn that from experience if you want to, and Kris is a bright guy.

A case in point is Elliott. I know most people think of him the way he was on the show — super awkward at first, then gradually tending toward slightly less awkward but still inexperienced and too retiring and way dorky in mannerisms and such (much less advanced in his development as a performer than Kris, in other words, because Elliott had only the tiniest amount of performing (as opposed to singing) experience before the show.) But I think anybody who hasn’t seen his live tours post-show would be shocked at what he’s like today.

In his indie position, he’s really running his own career entirely, pretty much, and it’s amazing what he’s put together — a truly excellent band that plays tight as heck behind him in a great, seamless unit, and he, as a performer, fronts the heck out of that band, plays to the crowd brilliantly, totally relaxes and lets loose with the vocals in ways that I think would amaze people who remember him sweating over Moody’s Mood for Love. … Like Kris, Elliott is not only a good musician but a smart, very motivated guy, and he made himself into a stellar live performer by dint of his own brains and effort and growing confidence. No reason Kris can’t do the same.

  • Truthiness

Awwww. I liked all three of them. There were issues I had with all their sets, I am not a fan of the band with Heartless, but seemed a little less than the studio/tour version, so improvement. But my favourite is still without a band at all. Kris’s voice was nice in it though.

Speaking of liking acoustic versions, I liked that version of Starlight, except it was a little too fast, they should have slowed it just a bit. And man does Adam sing that song high. I’m amazed that he can keep it as pure and as strong as it is with the key he starts with. But it was pretty and I liked it. And I’m okay with his hair up when it’s in close-ups, less fond of it in long-shots. But I liked that he was very stripped down in his look. Though those gloves were silly.

David Cook is always fun to watch and love how he interacts with the crowd, he still has it. Like parts of his song, but parts of it were so generic rock, I zoned out. But his voice was good, good guitar skills, he still is an excellent overall performer. And he was rocking the pink plaid.

I liked the Lies number, David Cook heavy of course, but still fun to see all three guys having fun on stage together and try and work together in a song, was cool. But man, I will never complain about Slow Ride being repetitive again.

  • snood199

Every time I see Kris do Heartless I hate the beginning and ending more and like the middle more. It’s crazy.

  • eliza

That was great! Kris always looked like he was having so much fun performing. I didn’t like the tour version of Heartless as much as the acoustic, just-Kris version, but it has really grown on me and this was my favorite performance of it yet.

  • girlygirl

Did you guys here the Adam-Kris interaction as they were walking off right before David started singing? I don’t think Adam realized is mike was still on…he said something like (paraphrasing here) “I don’t believe in family shows” and Kris responds (again paraphrasing) “only you”

LOL — Adam also whispered something in Kris’ ear when he was talking about no one throwing bras at him on GMA and the GMA dude was talking about how GMA is a family show, blahblahblah

(you can see all this on the long YouTube version of David’s performance)

Yeah, I think experience is the key here. Kris, I believe has even grown in his stage presence since the show.

So were you at the live performance?

Folks that are dismissive of his win and his talent take heed – the guy is really fantastic and he had no trouble commanding the stage next to Cook and Adam.

Awww LM, thank for this. :) Thank you for the report on DCTR as well.

  • AC

I loved this! I thought I was going to be sick of this because of all the tour youtube clips and everything, but nope, it was still great! Also, I think I pay too much attention to him because I recognize that shirt.

  • PattyH

My absolute favorite version of Heartless. Loved the addition of the electric guitar to make it more rocked-out.

Kris did not use his electric guitar. It’s just his acoustic guitar amplified. Sounds liek an oxymoron, huh, “amplified acousic!”
You know I have to bring up the back ground singers here because they have really been getting blasted in some recaps. True, they have absolutely no rythmn, dancing, but I think they are the best background singers I’ve seen. Their voices blend seamlessly with everyone.

  • gulfluv

I guess I pay too much attention too, I’m pretty sure the outer plaid shirt is the Urban Outfitters shirt that he first wore to his birthday dinner out with Katy. I’m pretty sure I’ve also seen it in some meet & greet pics since then. Really sad that I would notice/remember that I guess. I have a life, I promise :)

  • SarahP

i remember this shirt! he wore it at some show which i unfortunately cannot remember..but i remember the shirt cos he had this fan who looked like Archie who had the same shirt on and they took a cute picture of both in the same shirt.

very very cute! i think it may have been during one of the earlier shows during the meet and greet but i’m pretty absent minded

here i like the shirt more cos he has opened it up…more open chest for Kris is always welcome…lol

  • Yss

Oh man, I never get tired of his “heartless” (even though my favorite is still the full acapella version), he sounded great and looked amazing…Love him!!!

  • jack5791

That was fantastic, and what a great day for them to be performing. It’s so nice up in the East Coast today!

I love Kris’ more rocked out version of Heartless. :)

  • Michelle

Kris did great! I think he does have natural presence on stage and can draw a crowd in w/o even trying when he performs, just cause he’s so *into* the music and that energy shows. Once he gets a little more experience being on stage and polishes up his crowd interactions I think he’ll be fine.

Oh, and I liked his hair here :D

  • ppwars

Well, I held my breath for Kris, hoping for a jammed up performance this morning. After all, he is an unabashed fan of my fav, Alli. Upon the untimely death of his beloved Grandmom, Kris wholeheartedly supported Alli to fill his live spot on Conan. You know he watched, hanging on every note. Alli delivered – big time. I can imagine Kris’ delight.

This morning, Kris delivered – big time. I can imagine Alli’s delight. And, for me, for you, for Kris, I see continued growth as an amazing artist. He will never be my fav – just a genre/style thing. The amazing part is that he continues his “sneak attack”. It wasn’t enough that he slithered his way to Idol supremacy with ever improving deliveries and charisma; but, now, post idol, he continues, less stealthy (fool me once, shame….). Characteristically it seems, Kris continues to exhibit the greatest strides forward in delivery and charisma of all Tour performers – by leaps and bounds, IMHO. Where Alli and Adam seemed to me to have the clear edge, neither has surprised much, if at all, as much as they have met expectations – not a bad thing at all!

Adam delivered this morning, as well – big time. Someone mentioned that his voice sounded a little “tired”. Maybe, but I’m not going to listen to it again.

The wrap regarding live appearances by Kris, Adam, and Alli on national TV since the Tour began:
    Kris – Home Run
    Adam – Home Run
Alli – Walk off Grand Slam

  • windmills

Kris did a good job. I actually prefer the straight up acoustic version of Heartless but it’s not a bad thing for him to change things up some. Vocal was pretty good, he missed a note right before the big “me” but it’s not a big deal. I like how he gets into his performances. It may not come off as well when you have roaming camaras a la GMA but whether you’re in a small venue or an arena, his stage presence is really good as long as you have a camera tight on him.

  • wand3rful

LOL ‘” Adam also whispered something in Kris’ ear when he was talking about no one throwing bras at him on GMA and the GMA dude was talking about how GMA is a family show, blahblahblah

(you can see all this on the long YouTube version of David’s performance)

man i love girlygirl, you always have the extra scoop

  • david90531

One of the best live performance of Heartless that Kris did. Kick awesome, loved it!! xD

  • Sherena

Kris sounds so wonderful here! He’s so adorbs. I still crack up when he says “homies.”

  • evanjane

I think Kris’s stage presence is perfect. David Cook works the stage when he’s not singing. There wasn’t much room for wandering on Heartless. I think Kris is very emotive, very expressive while he’s singing. Each word is delivered precisely and that song is chock full of words. Kris’s interpretation and performance of Heartless has made me think twice about Kanye West and his songwriting abilities. Kris’s vocals were great on Heartless and TML. He delievered his line straightforward with clean, clear vocals. He doesn’t showboat. I loved seeing Kris bouncing around and having a terrific time on stage. There is a childlike joy that shines from Kris Allen and I find it uplifting. David Cook, also, seems boyish at times, showing genuine joy interacting with his friends/band and the audience.

All three are different performers and all quite talented. I think they represent the American Idol franchise spectacurlarly well.

And as Ladymadonna said, “take heed.” I second that “take heed…Kris Allen has arrived.” ::grin::

  • carolinacharms

Kris needs a new, original single. ASAP. Covers are not appropriate for the winner, imo. Too bad that Kara song flopped. Not his fault, mind you. It was dreadful!

Hey, does anybody happen to have an mp3 of this performance? I’d love to throw this on the ipod.

  • JosieX

Kris sounded great this morning, I thought his voice sounded really beautiful on the intro. He seems to always do well with this song, I think it was a good choice.

  • poporange

Ok I listened to “Heartless” again something is off .I listened to MJ videos I don’t like he tried to rock it on those songs I heard just seems odd to me.Sorry I tried maybe just not liking the style because I like when David C rocked things out .I will wait for the Cd oh btw not saying Kris can”t sing or is not talented..(mo on the songs I heard post-idol thus far not overall )

  • BCU79

Matt – I found this on another board. http://www.mediafire.com/?nm0v4hgytom

I saw similar links on Adam’s Starlight thread so I’m hoping it’s okay to share this.

  • Matt

    BCU, I love you.

  • BCU79

Ha! You are welcome. It’s just a matter of knowing where to look. Some of these boards seem to have ripped the audio/video before the performance is even finished.

  • CanadianFan

I am a huge and total Adam fan, but I listened to Kris’ Heartless this morning on a widescreen TV and excellent speakers and was totally impressed. I still love Adam better, but I really really enjoyed Kris today.

  • yinyang

Great performance by Kris. I’m liking him more and more all the time.
