Finally, a decent video of the Kris Allen/Smokey Robinson duet that closed the Wal-Mart shareholders meeting Friday has surfaced.

You can watch Kris perform “No Boundaries” and “Heartless” HERE.

Kris Allen will perform the National Anthem tonight at Game 2 of the NBA finals at the Los Angeles Staples Center.

This duet was a very nice match up! Loved it. :)

  • TKat

Maybe it is the recording, but Kris and the band sounded good to me, but Smokey didn’t sound so great.

  • canuck

Nope, this duet is still making me think of cruise ship here I come. Or, maybe it is Smokey’s outfit not helping matters much.

Kris, for heaven’s sake, dress-up a little. Right now you are fading into the background.

  • Pixie Baker

Ok, this really is painful to watch. These are the little things the finalists have to do when they win……and thank goodness, not too many people see it. Kris just doesn’t have a spark here….but then again….maybe no one would in this setting. I bet he is sooooo ready to move on…I am too! yikes!

  • rfb

Kris could fit in with anyone. Kris has the talent, personality, and good looks to be very successful.

  • jpfan

Wow, that was pretty bad. Smokey sounded terrible. And Kris was quite meh.

  • BootStar

Is it me or is the sound out of these Walmart shareholder meetings always kind of shitty? Everything always seems muffled.

And I was kind of hoping Kris was going to don a satin, puffy shirt too. Oh, well. :mrgreen_wp:

  • annabelina

Haha. Kris is adorable. He got kinda into that. I liked hearing the song Kris-asized. Smokey looks like he’s wearing pyjamas.

Kris, for heavenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sake, dress-up a little. Right now you are fading into the background.

Should he wear a shiny suit? ;)

  • canuck

Well, m’aybe not wear a shiny suit Kris. But at least wear something that makes you stand out, especially when you are with Smokey.

Toss the running shoes and look like you want to be there.

  • Norcal2009

Wow…impressive performance from the “Arkansas Idol”…NOT. This would validate the comments Simon said about eating ice for lunch. Bland and Boring. Adam, on the other hand, would’ve lit up the stage.

  • colette

listen a couple of times and you may find that Kris actually sounds pretty good. they gave him a bum mike though — the backups are turned up way loud.

as for the Smoke Man and the outfit: he’s 69 years old. He’s from another era of show biz entirely. And he is a true genius. Hundreds of songs written and recorded, dozens of hits of his own and that he produced for others, and still a lovely guy and a terrific live performer — see him, and it’s a party. Back in the day, you went out in sharp suits, ties, the whole nine — and you got yourself up in powder blue satin. I just consider it a campy trip in the flashback machine.

Yeah, it was impromptu, and seat of the pants. It’s a toss-away, and it’s really unbelievable they don’t have a better sound guy at this thing. But I thought Kris looked delighted to perform with him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Motown is a favorite kind of music for him.

It is confirmed. After suspecting as much when he was on idol this year, weird shiny clothes and waning voice aside, Smokey Robinson is freaking adorable. He seems like he just radiates joy.

  • AC

I think it’s more the sound from the walmart feed than anything because when I hear it from someone’s own video on youtube, it sounded a lot better. Also, I think Kris does stand out.. you know.. from all the shiny white. hehe.

  • spring2009

Good lord what are they trying to do to this poor guy.

Adam is being stalked by paparazzi – and Kris gets Minnie Mouse and Walmart shareholders – not the best publicity IMHO. That was terrible….I feel sorry for him.

  • GeminiDolly

I actually thought Kris sounded pretty good. Smokey OTOH….

  • jpfan

I wouldn’t knock Walmart. They’re the #1 seller of music in the U.S. They sell a heck of a lot more music than the paparazzi do. Hopefully they still like Kris after that performance.

  • Tony

Didn’t really like any of this.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Is it me or is the sound out of these Walmart shareholder meetings always kind of shitty? Everything always seems muffled.

Nope it wasn’t just you. I noticed it too. I don’t blame it on Kris. As far as what we were able to hear from Kris I liked but it was as if the mics weren’t turned up enough.

  • Lux

Omg not only Kris has to endure the torture of singing No boundaries everytime he is on stage but now has to sing boring songs with a bad sound, i like Smokey but this was all kinds of cheesy.

  • rfb

David Cook wore jeans and cowboy boots to this same event last year and people didn’t mind it at all. So, what Kris wore was A-OK to me. He is 23 yrs.old and he is very young minded, meaning he is not old fashion. You want to see him in a suit, go to his official website. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree — he really does radiate joy! You know, the performance wasn’t too bad considering the setting and limitations they were working with (this seems to be a conference space and not a performance space so I’m sure the sound is pretty dead in there). And you know, they were singing it like a duet, as in they were facing one another and playing off one another. Just saying…

  • Kirsten

What a fun duet. It’s great to see singers just playing off of each other. I love Smokey (his “Tracks of My Tears” has been one of my favourites forever).

I don’t care how much music Walmart sell – there has been very little in the media about Kris….it can’t be good. IMHO

  • Victoria

It is confirmed. After suspecting as much when he was on idol this year, weird shiny clothes and waning voice aside, Smokey Robinson is freaking adorable. He seems like he just radiates joy.

Oh, ITA. Even though I didn’t like his vocal, he always looks like he’s having so much fun. It’s impossible to watch him and not smile.

I thought Kris good, but I agree with the person who said the mics weren’t turned up enough.

  • weareallinnocent

Awww, they look like they’re having tons of fun, both of them. Kris sounded and looked fine to me. I’m just glad he got his vest back from Gokey. :-)

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kris was holding back a little to balance the duet with Smokey, who today is a slightly weaker vocalist. Regardless, I thought it was fun, which probably is what it was supposed to be.

    I’m happy for them both!

  • jerzytrash

Kris needs to stick with acoustic type, mellow vibe or be playing an instrument when he performs. Uptempo songs just do not do him justice (or vice versa). Even though Smokey’s vocal were not as great as in the day, he still brings the *feel* of the tune home. I just didn’t think they were a good fit.

  • canuck

Maybe Smokey was holding back for Kris? Agreed Smokey is a musical genius/legend and he can do no wrong on stage.

Just thought Kris pales quite a bit in comparison, but he also doesn’t seem to try to arise to the occasion of being on stage with Smokey.

  • jmom376

I think they were a very good fit. Kris seemed to be having a lot of fun and he sounded good. He has said before that he admires Smokey and others like him. This must be mind boggling to him to perform with his idols. Good for him!

I honestly don’t think Kris is to worried about not being hounded by the paparazzi like Adam is. There are all types of artists out there and plenty of them stay under the radar as far as papparazzi goes. I think he is getting just the right type/amount of press.

  • colette

I’m not making excuses, but: how many rehearsals did they have? Didn’t it sound like Smokey’s mike and ONE of the backup mikes turned up twice as loud as Kris’s?

As for Kris not having enough pr — ok, he’s done all the major morning shows and the talk shows and the Idolatry interview and he’s singing the national anthem today…..Sounds like a full plate to me. It’s a wonder the guy has time to tie his sneakers.

No way can you tell anything much about either of them from this silly command performance IMO! except that they had fun….:drunk_tb:

  • weareallinnocent

Maybe Smokey was holding back for Kris?

LOL That very well could be! I agree he’s a legend and a fantastic entertainer, personified joy if you will. I simply offered a possibility of why Kris sounded faint. And, I likened it to when, IMO, Adam seemed to hold back a little to balance with Kris during the Queen duet…

But whatever. Just don’t mistake me for a fanatic Kris fan — I’m not. I, however, do have the ability to view a performance objectively and opine fairly, which is all I was trying to do.

  • erinnthered

It is confirmed. After suspecting as much when he was on idol this year, weird shiny clothes and waning voice aside, Smokey Robinson is freaking adorable. He seems like he just radiates joy.

    Totally agreed!

Looked like it was a good way to close the meeting. Both of them worked off each other well, and were having fun up there. I think “Get Ready” was the theme this year?

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I love Smokey Robinson, but that arrangement was…. phlegmatic.
I second the not enough rehearsal comment- sounded like the drummer tried a time or two to get the lead out but keyboards and vocals weren’t buying it.

It’s sad that dynamic performers have to do this type of dreck.
I guess as long as the check clears…

  • SparklesATL

    Adam fan here.

Kris has come soooooo far since his audition. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Idol contestant grow so much in so short a period of time. He’s gone from “I’m sure there are better singers out there than me.” to looking and singing like a pro on stage with Smokey.

I really, really, really wanted Adam to win, but I can see why Kris is the American Idol. He’s supremely talented and is developing a great stage presence. He and Adam are both very talented, just in different ways.

ETA – Someone get that man a stylist STAT! I hope Katie waits until Kris is asleep one night and burns every vest, tshirt and jeans he has. Then maybe she’ll call Adam up and they will all go shopping!

  • colette

didn’t the AI stylist in some interview say Kris was impossible? They could barely get him to have his hair cut, he hated to try on clothes or shop, and to get him into a leather jacket was a real victory.

You’re right, it’s show biz and you gotta come dressed for the party in some fashion. But I just kind of dig that he’s so not-vain. My husband’s the same way, and he’s a cutie too (albeit a somewhat older one).

Tho DC, despite some mascara and a few other things, also seems like a super-casual dude……

  • TKat

These performances are for Walmart’s key stakeholders, not their buyers (merchants). Wal-Mart’s music sections use sophisticated category management systems, if it sells they stock it (except anything explicit). Plus, if they get enough vendor $ they’ll make a major push for just about anything (but explicit material). These days the record business is not throwing around a lot of money, so it’s almost totally on sales.

  • MaryS-NJ

I watched Smokey’s performance before Kris joined him and thought, sadly… a legend who is past his prime. It wasn’t really his voice but it seemed… out of place or something.

Then I figured it’s just got to be really difficult to get that concert-like energy at a shareholders meeting where you’ve got corporate executives giving speeches and it’s not really about the music. Then, when Kris joined Smokey they looked like they were having fun together and Kris sounded strong and in synch with Smokey, and that made it better – for me anyway.

  • CindyM

Thank you Kris and Smokey for getting Danny Gokey’s “get retty” performance out of my head when thinking of this song. I think Kris looks cute just as he is. It’s his style and he wears it well. How many people were at this performance? The crowd shot makes it look like a ton of people. I think Kris did a fine job, there are obviously some mix issues, but overall a good performance.

  • spring2009

Urgh – someone just tweeted that he butchered rehearsal of the national anthem for the NBA playoffs tonight (and they called him Adam)….

  • babybelle32

What a fun duet. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great to see singers just playing off of each other. I love Smokey (his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tracks of My Tearsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has been one of my favourites forever).

Yes, despite the sound quality, this was a fun performance to watch. It’s good to see two performers totally get into the music, and make it about the sone, and not themselves. BTW, a quick listen to Smokey when he was on Idol this year, pretty much dispels the idea that he was trying to bring his voice down so that he wouldn’t over sing Kris.

I love Kris’ stye, just like his music, it’s a part of who he is. And it hasn’t stopped him from gaining fan, or attention for his music. I don’t get the idea of wanting gossip mags to hound Kris, when he is actually getting press for his talent. The man wants to be an artist, a singer/songwriter, not a celebrity in the vein of what Lindsey Lohan has turned into, or someone who is only covered because of their personal life. Walmart, has shown that they are very kind to the idols who do these events, and I’m sure that they will pay Kris back in kind for doing their event.

And, if someone wants to read all the press and radio interviews that Kris has done, all you have to do is do a google search.

“Urgh – someone just tweeted that he butchered rehearsal of the national anthem for the NBA playoffs tonight (and they called him Adam)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.”

Given that people are probably being allowed into the arena right now, since the game begins in about an hour, I doubt he is rehearsing in the arena right now, so I highly dout the truthfulness of that tweet.

  • JenG

    Kris is adorable.

Urgh – someone just tweeted that he butchered rehearsal of the national anthem for the NBA playoffs tonight (and they called him Adam)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

lol. dude. the game hasn’t even started yet. Doesn’t start till 5pst. He hasn’t butchered anything.

ETA: I meant to say, if the tweet is true, it’s just the rehearsal and he hasn’t butchered anything yet. I’m sure he’ll do fine.

  • AC

No, the stylist at first wanted to try and change Kris up at first but then decided to keep him at the boy next door look because no one else had that on the show. if you look at the AI site, the stylist even said at the end that they were glad they kept him simplistic. Haha.. I think I was missing AI one day and I read through all the stylist’s comments for each person.

Also, I kinda like him in just a plain white tee because I think he looks hot like that. I think Kris might keep Miles(?) as the stylist because Cook still has him too right?

  • girlygirl

Maybe Kris’ mic was deliberately turned down? I watched Smokey sing a couple of songs before Kris joined him on stage, and Smokey’s voice sounded very thin. And the band wasn’t exactly jumping. But Kris looked like he was havig a good time, and he looked perfectly comfortable performing with a legend.

  • CindyM

The twitter feed was from about an hour ago. There is a cute picture of Kris on twitpics.

    http://twitpic.com/6v4p8

Photogs sure love the peace sign, don’t they?

  • AmericanIdolatry

I’m gonna say something that I’ve been wanting to say for a long time. I don’t care that Kris isn’t getting as much media attention as Adam. I’m glad he dresses like a normal guy and doesn’t wear expensive suits or flashy costumes. I’m glad he went to Disney World. I’m glad he went back to Arkansas to rest for a few days. And I’m glad he performed with Smokey Robinson (and didn’t try to outsing him).

Why? Because it’s about the music. This performance was for fun–he’s not going to collaborate with Smokey on this song to try to win a Grammy. I don’t care if Kris never has a number one hit. I don’t care if his album doesn’t go platinum. I just want Kris to make the kind of music he made on AI. And that’s how I will judge his success.

I voted for Kris because his music is genuine and honest–it’s not over-embellished with costumes or lighting or staging. His performances come from the heart. He exudes both fragility and a quiet confidence that allows him to convey the meanings of the songs he sings. And that’s why he won AI (and also why he’d never win Britain’s X-Factor…hope to God that never crosses the pond).

  • jmom376

I like Kris’s style just like it is. I can’t picture a glam Kris. He does look nice in a suit, long sleeve shirt/slacks, but I think he looks the most comfortable and like his style of music when he is wearing casual clothes.

  • girlygirl

And I think Kris’ style is right for him. He is a simple t-shirt and jeans guy — and he looks fantastic. So why change? Lots of musicians perform in jeans and t-shirts or button down type shirts. It’s not a big deal.

  • girlygirl

    Who tweeted that? link please…

  • Trina

Getting stalked by paparazzi must be so much more fun than singing for thousands on stage with a legend and going to Disney. I wish I could be a SUPERSTAHHH so I could have cameramen cornering me.

  • girlygirl

Also, I work in sports, so I’ve been in arenas and stadiums where I have heard more than a few people have really bad rehearsals of the SSB…most of the time, they then turn around and do a good job with the real deal. So even if Kris did have a bad rehearsal, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be bad when he actually does it right before tipoff.

  • amiroamor

eh, didnt Kris butcher rehearsals on AI, and during the LIVE show was flawless so means nothing.

  • colette

AmericanIdolatry — my sentiments exactly. very clearly put. thank you!

Also — I’m still adjusting to/amazed by the 24-7 coverage of celebrities. It’s so unlike the way it used to be with celebs getting plenty of attention, but not being ambushed, recorded, photographed and tweeted about incessantly. If the papps could follow them into the men’s and ladies’ room, they would…

I’d hate to deal with that stuff, and though it comes with the territory, I think it’s pretty hard stuff for anyone to cope with…..Adam & Kris are both holding up pretty well, given that. Susan Boyle? not so much….

  • newshound61

I’m curious. What media coverage has Adam had that Kris hasn’t? He’s in all the same “gossip” type mags, US, Life and Style, People, etc. He’s actually done more TV and radio interviews than Adam. He’s on the front page of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette singing with Smokey. The only media thing Adam’s been in that Kris hasn’t is TMZ videos.
And as for him being low-key with Smokey, why would you try to upstage a legend? Kris is simply staying true to who he is and I applaud him for it.

  • TKat

I’m not even sure that Rudy Torres tweet was for real. He’s a commercial photographer. What would he even be doing at an NBA rehersal? I’m done putting much stock in these tweets. Many times we heard about an “awesome” rehearsal and it was a so-so performance.

And Kris even said he had a bad rehearsal of NB and then it pulled that off just fine.

  • CindyM

Since the competition ended, I agree, Kris has had as much media coverage as Adam has. He’s probably had more as the winner of the contest. I saw tabloid treatment of Kris at the grocery store this week (marriage issues-yeah right) and tonight’s singing of the National Anthem before the game is a big deal. I wish nothing but success for both of them.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/chachithegreat chachi

You could not pay me enough to watch the NA tonight. I watched my two previous faves (Elliott and DC) butcher it, and hell if I’m going to watch another one. Not only is it a hard song, but if it were me, I’d be going into a seizure from the nerves.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on the front page of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette singing with Smokey.

A lot of us don’t get that paper.

  • elw

I really don’t mean to be rude because I think Kris is a nice guy, BUT…this is such average singing it’s a JOKE.

  • kokko

Are we watching the same performance? That’s not a good performance at all. Kris sounds weak and strained, I would give him the benefit of the doubt that his mic might be a bit off. If Kris fans love this for the fun factor, that’s fine.

I think by now we all know what Kris strengths and weaknesses are. I feel that being the American Idol he has to perform the coronation song, and do certain gags like this Walmart thing, which as far as I am concerned, have not been playing well to his strength, and I feel that he has not been winning new fans from his post Idol performances.

The other thing I want to say is I have never seen so many fans “nervous” about their idol for singing the National Anthem. I think Kris has ample time to prepare so I would expect him to figure a way to make the song work for him.

  • newshound61

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on the front page of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette singing with Smokey.

A lot of us donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get that paper.

I understand that, but the original comment was that Kris is not getting much media attention, something I disagreed with. The Democrat Gazette is the top newspaper in Arkansas and I’d say making the front page qualifies as getting media attention. Not as widely read as say USA Today, but it’s still top coverage in his home state.

  • PattyH

Looks to me like Kris rescued Smokey! I love Smokey but I am really glad I didn’t have to listen to him do the entire song! I thought Kris looked adorable. He looked just like Kris!

  • leome

That duet is not exactly the best thing, but sounds like it must have been fun for those there.
Kris sounded better than Smokey though. The thing with Kris is that it never looks like his singing is natural… seeing him sing, even such a simple song as this one, it looks like he’s putting lots of effort into it and forcing his voice.
Maybe it’s just the visual… and maybe he can handle, but I kinda wonder how it will be after the tour. Because his singing is not one you can say “oh, he hit that note so easily”. It does not sound/look easy for him.

  • Tess

Interesting the “stuff” the AI champ has to do. Since Kris is not making any of the decisions about what he sings and who he sings with and where he sings he’s getting a pass from me on all accounts. I’m looking forward to see what he brings to the stage when the idol tour starts and if he can “electrify” the audience like the reigning AI champ should.

  • hollygo9

Kris is so freakin’ classy. It’s nice to see someone defer to a legend and not try to showboat and hog the mic. Flove him.

  • CindyM

Very nice rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner….great job Kris!

  • Tess

Great job Kris….you did a very good job on the National Anthem. Guess I got my basketball in for the playoffs, since my Phoenix Suns blew it this year.

  • RubySlippers

I thought Kris did good with the NA! He put his own spin on it.

  • frogcooke

That was a decent version. :) Not the best but not the worst. so kudos

  • ilovetohateai

decent i agree. a small improvement from cook’s last year.

  • girlygirl

That was a nice version of the SSB. Kris did a good job!

  • jmom376

YAY Kris. I liked your version of the Star-Spangled Banner and think you did a great job. You did what you do best and made it all about the lyrics and the meaning of the song.

GO MAJIC!!! I am an Orlando girl and am really hoping they come back to Orlando tied.

  • ross

I thought Kris did a great job with the anthem. Very pure-sounding, and nice tone. Way to go, Kris.

  • ShariG

Kris more than holds his own with Smokey and actually knows how to sing a duet as a partnership not a oneupsmanship. I have now heard the Star Spangled Banner which is knocked out of the park. Absolutely beautiful, but I was never nervous that he wouldn’t do a great job. He rises to every occasion quite well.

  • ShariG

Leome, I don’t see that at all when I watch Kris sing. It looks like the most natural thing in the world to me for him to sing what ever he is singing. In fact that is one of the things I love about him. I guess it is all in the eyes of the beholder, right? We kind of see what we want to see.

  • linsav

It may be that he does the same thing as Daughtry does. Chris Daughtry always looks like he is straining to sing, but I know he has a big enough range and so that isn’t really the case. It seems to me like a lot of guitarist do that when they sing, I think it is something they started doing when they first starting singing and it was never corrected.

  • iluvai

My big problem with this is that the video doesn’t play straight through on my computer. Every other video clip does…. So I can’t really hear them sing coherently. But it looks like Kris is having fun. It looks like Smokey is having fun. There sure were a lot of camera flashes out in the audience!!

  • Suzanne

yeah–Kris even looks a little bored up there. About one minute after Kris came in on the song, I started feeling badly for him. You KNOW that it’s one of those things he was told he had to do, maybe only just before he had to do it.

There’s a point at which old guys who had hits decades ago should stop singing because they just don’t have anything new to offer. Smokey is so there–I mean–THAT shirt?? Timewarp back to the 70s (when Smokey was singing his hits of only one decade ago).

Smokey doesn’t have much of a voice anymore. The song sounded lame when it was just Smokey, and with Kris, it was only slightly better. Kris would never sing (if he had a choice) a song with that lame of an old, snoozer of an arrangement.

Poor Kris–the Idol crown weighs heavily upon noggin.

  • QueenChiro

not good???? you can’t be serious. he didn’t sound weak or strained…it was flawless and on key. his type of music might not be your cup of tea, but you can’t criticize his talent. i’m so tired of people doggin’ his ability because he doesn’t have a 5 octave range! go listen to James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet, Carol King, the list goes on and on and on! you don’t have to have a Mariah Carey range to be considered talented! and, quite frankly, I don’t like Mariah’s music! she may have the range you’re looking for, but it’s not my preference…I’d rather listen to the soulful song-writer type. Kris’s ‘Beautiful Moon’ that he recorded pre-idol is amazing!!!
