Kris Allen Covers Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” (VIDEO)

Watch Kris Allen sing a cool, soulful cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic, “Breakdown” in Asheville, NC earlier this week. Kris has been performing fan requests nightly on his “Out Alive” tour.

The icing on the cake? Tom Petty returned a link to this you tube “Nice.” he said. Kudos Kris! Also, the Season 8 Idol winner had his big ole wrist cast taken off. Nice to know that he’s feeling better.

Kris must have been overjoyed to know that Tom Petty listened to his cover and liked it.

  • milwlovesadam

Wow, good for Kris. A tweet back from the original himself.

  • milwlovesadam

Here’s the video: ( I noticed it’s by the same poster who filmed Adam at Napa, kudos!!! )

Loooove this song & Kris does it justice.

  • girlygirltoo

Really like the way Kris & the band covered this song. Very cool that Tom Petty seems to have enjoyed it as well.

  • luly

I think that Kris did a great job covering this song and it’s really cool that it looks like
Tom Petty saw it and liked it.

  • Valarie

Kris now seems completely comfortable without the guitar. He was never just a WGWG, but it took a broken wrist to prove the point.

  • mzhallcat

Soulful and sensual, I really like it. Great cover and very nice that Tom Petty commented and retweeted the link. I am really enjoying these fan requests. Every show I look forward to the new cover and so far I have not been disappointed with any of them. Kris seems to have a knack for choosing songs that suit him.

  • hoosiermama2

    I agree. Nice! :-)

  • Miz

I was thrilled that he finally covered a Tom Petty song. He’s one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Super cool that Petty tweeted about it.

I’m really enjoying the nightly requests. Really great songs.

  • linsmile

Love it!  I’m sure one word “nice” from Tom Petty speaks volumes to Kris.

  • MissMyEm

Thanks again, MJ for posting this.  Tom Petty is one of my favorites and I love this song.  Kris put his own spin to it and it sounded so cool and even a bit jazzy.  I can imagine what a thrill it was for Kris to know Tom Petty, not only said “nice, but tweeted it to all his followers.   Between kudos from Tom Petty, compliments at Little Kids Rock from Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, how Kris still manages to remain grounded is beyond me.   Cale tweeted today about Tom’s tweet too.   It’s nice to know that these icons who’ve made it big in music, like Kris.   Thrills me to pieces.

  • Shoriagirl

Kris has covered Tom Petty before – he did Free Falling with GRO on his first tour. I am pretty sure there are some videos out there.  I love this cover, perfect vocal and arrangement. Band is great on this, too.

    Thank you for posting, MJ!

Why on Earth does Kris not have any Missouri dates?! I’d be there in a heart beat.

Concert at The Old Rock House, St. Louis, MO
    April 15, 2013 from 7pm to 10pm – The Old Rock House

  • parsenip

It’s amazing to me that those guys learned that in one afternoon.  Excellent sound quality on that video too.  Really nice.

  • Ratna12

It’s great to see what’s Kris will sing next.
I love this cover even though I’m not familiar with the song at first (I know only Free Falling)

  • nncw

He’s just so talented and I love his harmonies with Torres.

  • Shana Collier

Thank you.  Apparently, I just wasn’t patient enough.

  • Ratna12

I don’t think Kris is finished making up the tour list yet, because he keeps adding to it.
Please check his Facebook or check

I really hate it when on the night of the show some people tweeted that they don’t know that Kris was coming near their town. :(

  • mtlfan2

that is very good :) I love to discover new music through Kris!

  • lovetheusa1776

So true – that’s one of the reasons enjoyed his concert on the 14th – his emphasis on the vocals.

  • snappp

Just when you think it doesn’t get any better. With him playing live, it’s not just trying to make a great arrangement but also just as important the feeling that seems to emanate from within and pours out through his singing. His shows shows are the best. Awesome job, Kris.

  • lucysfave

That was really great!  It really seemed to fit Kris’ voice.  The band did that song justice.

  • Incipit

He was never just a WGWG, but it took a broken wrist to prove the point.

He never was, neither are any of the other winners “just” a guy playing a guitar…and they all have fans who appreciate their musicality/style/vocals.

Be good if they didn’t all have to break a wrist to lose that dismissive, lamebrain label, but the truth is, even if they did – it would still get used, even though it is useless.

  • Valarie

It is true that several Idols have been damaged by the ‘dismissive, lamebrain label’ of WGWG, but it was coined as a way to devalue Kris Allen. It spread to include others at a later date. Hopefully all of those artists who have been tarred, can gain some redemption from Kris’ broken winged triumph.

  • Valarie

Torres has such a beautiful tone and blends so beautifully with Kris.

  • Valarie

Chris Torres has such a beautiful tone and blends perfectly with Kris’ beautiful tone. Torres is too old for Idol, so maybe he should audition for The Voice.

  • girlygirltoo

He’s got his own band, called The Grass Heat. He is the lead singer. They play a lot of gigs, although mainly around San Diego.

  • David??[08-09????]

Always great tot hear Kris, this was beyond amazing!

  • almondean88

Thanks again for this post MJ!  Kris’s Out Alive Tour is fantastic!  Each performance brings a new cover/request song on which Kris works his unique style. Why, oh why was Kris not touring last year, or this year when his record was released?  I’m so very glad Kris has new management! In spite of his injury, Kris seems so energetic and happy!

  • girlygirltoo

Hopefully someone videotaped the band intros from the 2nd show tonight, because just,

anyway, this is from a couple of nights ago, but check out the banter between Kris and Jillette as she attempts a southern accent. lol

  • S.G.

I have always believed in his talent, & he has broven me right time & again, with every song he write, perform, cover or rearrange. I am a huge fan & will always be!

  • David Facenfield

    very cool

  • siennalily

Love this to death. The falsetto at the end :)))))
