At the House of Blues in Dallas last night, American Idol alum, Kris Allen sang his duet “Loves Me Not” from his recent album, Thank You Camilla, with a cousin of his guitarist, Cale Mills.

After (at the 5:25 mark) he covered the Garth Brooks classic, “The River”, a cappella, in 4 part harmony! Gorgeous. Cale’s cousin is a wonderful singer, too.

Kris was invited to open for Keith Urban and they played 6 shows together, even sang together Boys of Summer and Jack and Diane.

This is just gorgeous and why wouldn’t it be, Kris slayed “to Make You Feel My Love”
which was a Garth Brooks hit. Garth’s version of TMYFML was what allowed Kris
to sing it for “Country Week”. I happen to be a huge Garth fan. I remember a
while back when Kris and Katy got to meet Garth. So many exciting and creative
things have happened for Kris since he became “free as a bird”. Playing with
Jose and sharing the stage with Bruce, his Christmas EP and the Paul Simon
song. I love that his new management is packing Kris’s schedule with all these
great opportunities plus all these wonderful club dates.

Both of these were such a treat last night. Cale’s cousin has a beautiful voice. The River was simple and gorgeous! It had almost a gospel feel to it imo. I’m a sucker for close harmonies. I can’t wait to see what else Kris and the guys have in store for us in his upcoming shows. Maybe more new originals will surface, too! :)

Despite claiming that they no longer remembered how to play it, Kris et al did a fine job on Before We Come Undone last night   :)

So soulful and beautiful! I’ve listened to it about 7 times in a row, ha. Being acapella you didn’t really get the strong country vibe of it, but his voice really does soar with this type of song. Darn you Kris Allen for being so awesome!

Wow, that is lovely. Killer harmonies! Many years ago I babysat for a couple who were going to a Reba concert. Next day I asked how they liked Reba and they said “we liked the opening act a lot better, some guy named Garth Brooks”. lol True story. And this week that “some guy” opening act was inducted into the cm hall of fame. Moral of story = there’s not a darn thing wrong with being an opening act. Congrats to Garth!

Elliegrll, I too would like to see Kris cover Shameless.

I had forgotten how much I liked this song.  This was one of my favorites from his first album.  As always, he did a great job.  Thanks for posting.

This is very good. I’ve never heard “The River” before, but I love the harmonies and Kris sounds awesome. Though I didn’t care for the clapping at the end. I think the performance was a powerful delivery on its own.

Actually, I wish he delves more into his inner blues/folk/soul/country side more often. Maybe southern bluesy blue-eyed soul?

This! I’ve thought all along that Kris needs to find a niche for himself that plays to his strengths. I think he would have a better chance for long term success if he goes the alternative route and maybe he would have a song(s) that cross over to Pop. Or he could focus on songwriting/producing — at least in the short term. Whatever he decides, I hope at some point he will shed some light on his career going forward.

Simply beautiful.  Kris never ceases to amaze me with his beautiful voice and I love it that he continues to surprise his fans.

Thanks MJ for the wonderful video.

Really lovely rendition of “The River” by Kris.  I agree with this statement by Rayni:

“[T]hat lovely warm voice with that little ‘cry’ would make some country love songs exquisite.”

Kinda ironic, because that “cry” in Kris’ voice has irritated the heck out of me in the past.  (Not on TYC, though.  I love his 2nd CD.)  I never understood before when others suggested that Kris could go country.  But this cover sounds authentic, and the “cry” fits in well with country.  Still, given my druthers, I’d rather Kris stay in the pop end of things (or whatever you’d call something like TYC).

I also agree with Keisha Monteith:

“I wish he delves more into his inner blues/folk/soul/country side more often. Maybe southern bluesy blue-eyed soul?”

I am so tired of genre tyranny.  I like good music, and I don’t care what genre it is in.  If Kris can sing in multiple genres, or incorporate elements of multiple genres into his music, more power to him!

Since this is a dedicated Kris post, I’d like to say one or two things.

    (1)  I didn’t have an opportunity to post when the announcement was made about Kris and RCA parting ways.  I wanted to extend my condolences to the Kris fans on the site.  I felt bad.  And frustrated, because I think “Thank You Camellia” is an undiscovered jewel.  I thought Kris’ 2nd CD showcased a very current sound, along with Kris’ songwriting talent, and I thought there were multiple songs with hit potential.  It makes me sad that those songs won’t be pushed to radio.

    (2)  I’ve read more about Kris and his doings since he parted ways with RCA than I ever did when he was still signed with them, and I take that as a very positive sign.  I do understand that Kris changed management, and I am sure that is a big part of the explanation.  Even so, I am just getting a very good, happy vibe.  He is getting out there and is performing, as he clearly wants to do.  Perhaps some of the venues are smaller than in Era #1 — (I have no idea for sure since I don’t follow Kris closely) — but even if so, he’s paying his dues and growing his fanbase.  (Think Eric Church, the Zac Brown Band, and the Eli Young Band, for some examples from the country music genre of the grassroots approach.)

Overall, I’m feeling reasonably upbeat about Kris’ career.

I just got back from Texas this morning and I went to both shows in Dallas and Austin.  Had the best time, of course, since it is a Kris Allen show. Both crowds were so AWESOME.  I loved the duet and The River.  In Dallas and Austin, you could hear a pin drop while Kris was singing The River. Last night at the Austin show, Kris performed The River again as an encore but Tracey was not there.  It sounded just as awesome with the three of them too.  I am so happy for Kris because he seems so happy and excited about his future.  I cannot wait to see what’s coming up.

  • girlygirltoo

Yeah, since they did this in 3-part harmony for an encore last night, hopefully Kris will keep it in his set for the rest of the shows he’s doing this year
