Kris’ voice is so perfect for this song. So sexy and beautiful. Band and harmonies sounded great too.

  • Jonins

That video grab of Kris is so mesmerizing. Also, his rendition as well. But still, love that picture above. :)

  • RalphResty

He’s still one of the best Americal Idols.

  • Latin2

    Very sexy. :)

  • Latin2

I just saw Devin Velez’s idol intro video and he said his favorite Idol was Kris Allen, and I remember Johnny Keyser saying the same last year.

    They have good taste. :)

  • Kesia Monteith

I got a question. Do I have to attend a show for me to request a song? I have no clue if he ever is coming to Toronto, but I so want to tweet him to sing Kelly Clarkson’s Why Don’t You Try. Thing is, I’m not sure he knows it, because it’s an exclusive download album track, but his tone would sound great with that song.

Anyway, Kris sounds awesome here as always.

  • washpd

Kesia, anyone can request a song on twitter or Facebook when he asks for requests. He is coming to the Rivoli in Toronto on April 23, though.

  • Kesia Monteith

    Thank you :)

  • mzbet

    Holy cow! thatisall

  • mtlfan2

one of my favorite covers of him. Gorgeous!!
This video has a better sound quality

  • nncw

OMG hot hot hot – perfect!

  • MargieIdol

Here’s the ticket link for the Toronto show:

Kris has said that since he’s not playing the guitar, what song they choose is more about whether the band knows it/can learn it right now. But keep trying.

  • mzhallcat

Squeee!!! This is the song I’ve wanted Kris to cover since he started doing requests because (a) I love this song and (b) I wanted to see him emotionally connect with the lyrics. He exceeded even my expectations. THAT VOICE!!! And A++ job of conveying the angst and bringing the sexy. That performance invokes too many emotions, I am a puddle.

  • MargieIdol

This was sooo hot. Thanks MJ for posting these covers.

  • girlygirltoo

Kesia, you don’t have to be going to the show to request a song.

However, he IS coming to Toronto on April 23. Tickets have already gone on sale. If you are interested in buying one, here’s the link:

  • girlygirltoo

Love this! Wicked Game was a fantastic choice…well suited for his range and style.

  • Banished

I still think he’s the sexiest winner ever! I wonder if Kris has to get permission from the artists before he does these covers every time?

  • Incipit

A lot of people take a pass at that song, very, very few can pull it off with any believability – their vocals or their emotional connection, or the fidelity to the ‘tone’ of the song; the quality of their performance is usually lacking in some way, sometimes in every way. I have been burned a few times, and apprehensive to listen while someone trashes it.

But Kris and his band more than did it justice, IMO. He transitions into falsetto very smoothly, and keeps the dramatic tension with the haunting quality of those minor notes –  all told, this is very very nice. Thanks for the post!

  • girlygirltoo

The performances are reported to ASCAP, BMI and/or SESAC, which allows whatever organization the songwriters belong to to collect a royalty payment for the live performance. It is covered under a general license, so artists don’t have to request permission every time someone does a cover song in a live performance.

  • washpd

You don’t have to get permission to do a live cover. And considering that he usually picks what cover song he’s doing about 30 minutes to an hour before the show, I’m gonna say no lol.

  • luly

Kris sounds amazing and very sexy!

  • rayni

I hate to be repetitive and shallow but…..that’s all I got.  Whew.  He’s just better and better and more and more delicious.  Like buttah.

  • Eilonwy

Well done, Mr. Allen! That performance got right to the heart of why it’s an interesting song, and I think it gains from KA’s making it a bit grungier and smokier than the original.

  • vtu

That was great!  Kris just keeps getting better and better.

  • HappyDaisy_2

One of the coolest songs, one of the coolest performances of it.

    Nice work, Kris!

  • Triskel4

    Woah baby!

  • Sunny Mc

Oh my.  This is so hot and sexy, Wow! One of my fave covers he’s done.

  • parsenip

Worlds are colliding.  Chris Isaak is one of my favorite singer/songwriters, and Kris nailing his iconic song . . . it doesn’t get a whole lot better than this.

  • HopeForMusic

I really, really liked Kris on Idol.  He joined David Cook and Bo as my two favorites ever, but no offence to David and Bo, but Kris became my very favorite, and he just keeps climbing the stairway to getting better and better.  He’s sexy, has a gorgeous voice, tremendous artistry, unbelievable musicality, sexy, lol.

It’s rare that I am left so unable to express my feelings, but Kris keeps doing this to me.  I can’t even imagine how you guys manage not to become blithering fangirls…

  • Aakash Mansukhani

People underestimate Kris so much and he’s often given the unfair treatment of the unknown idol winner. They keep forgetting who won American Idol in Season 8 when compared to Lambert but like screw everyone he’s such a freaking boss musician. He needs to be recognized more.

  • almondean88

This is gorgeous, sultry, smooth, Kris at his best!  I’m another fan of Chris Isaak and this song is one of my favorites.  Chris Isaak’s video of the song appears on lots of “sexiest video” lists.  It is such a wonderful, heartbreaking love song and a perfect fit for Kris Allen.

  • mzhallcat

mtlfan2 thanks for the link to the video with the better audio. His voice…holy crap! I am sooo envious of the fans who were there. I’ve seen many say that as good as the videos are, Kris sounds even better live. Would like to mention that in this video you can hear Torres voice better and he sounds great also, Individually these 3guys are all very talented, but put them all together and they make epic happen.

  • siennalily

Love this so much. Kris excels at these emotional songs. His emotional connection to music is what sets him apart for me. I get sad for him sometimes, too, since he’s had such a struggle since AI but touring small venues and honing your craft is the way most artists get started. I know he’s doing it backwards but I’m hoping this will payoff in the long run for him. In the meantime we get to enjoy these amazing performances. Thanks for posting MJ.

  • B

This was the song I have wanted him to do! I knew he would nail it – his tone of voice…….this was soooooo hot.

  • breakdown

Looking forward to seeing Kris tomorrow nite :).

  • Miz

Kris tweeted an adorable picture last night and the Canyon Club borrowed it and tweeted it today. :)

    @canyonconcertsGreat show last night @KrisAllen

Kris’ caption was ‘just my size’ :D

  • James M.

First I hear David Cook do Stockholm Syndrome, then I hear Carrie Underwood doing Fix You, now Kris Allen is doing Wicked Game.

This is why I love Idol, awesome covers of some of my favorite songs.

  • Ratna12

What a great song to cover, the minute I heard the intro…oh oh.
I was holding the railing and couldn’t breathe, he was smouldering last night.
And he was closing his eyes on this song, it was just him and the song, it seemed.

Kesia, he is coming to Toronto and you have to see him.
As good as the video is, nothing compared to see Kris Allen live.
As a matter of fact, I told Kris at the M&G last night that some fans in Toronto are excited that he is going there. He smiled and said “I know”. I said, make it a good one and he said, I will. :D

The River is on the set list and he sings it Acapela, and it is breathtaking.

  • Pippygirl

This song + Kris’ gorgeous voice= perfection.

  • David??[08-09????]

    hell yes he is

  • Elizabeth

Wow!  I don’t know what else to say that hasn’t already been said.  Kris is simply amazing,  georgeous, sexy, super talented, funny, kind, and beautiful on the inside and out, etc.    He connected with this song on such an emotional level, you couldn’t help but be mesmerized by him.  Yet another wonderful cover.

  • Shoriagirl

Perfect song for Kris voice and the band did really good job with the accompaniment. Bravo!

  • jasmine1111

Since forever, I’ve wanted him to cover that song.  I knew he’d be one of the very few who could give it those sexy, yet haunting, yet vulnerable qualities that make it a stand-out song.  When Kris Allen performs, he makes you feel the emotion he’s feeling throughout every nerve ending in your being.

  • durbesque

If Kris keeps going like he is, he will become too big of a star to go back to strummin ‘n’ sangin’ when the wrist heals.

  • Miz

He’s not a yokel. He’s a musician and uses that ‘strummin’ and piano playing to compose music and write songs.

  • Shoriagirl

Kris never “needed” guitar to express himself.  On his first tour he’s done quite a few songs without any instrument, some with guitar/piano/ukelele etc.

  • MissMyEm

Kris is the most underrated Idol winner ever.  Listen to the barritone and the falsettos his voice emits.   He can go from one end of the musical scale to the other end all in one smooth swoop.   Inasmuch as I would have loved to get the song I keep tweeting, I loved this song.  So sexy.  So beautiful.  So Kris.   Kris is such a talented musician and artist.  It so surprises me that he had to wait to get on Idol to gain some recognition.   The guy is a major talent.
And if you think these videos are great…you should have heard it live.   Mesmerizing, to say the least.

  • http://MJO judes

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll ever hear Kris live [ the best chance Kris has of coming to Australia is with other Christian musicians] unless there’s something happening when we’re touring the US & Canada in August . I only have videos to go by but this song was absolutely in Kris’s wheelhouse . Hey if he befriends Chris Isaak , Kris could tag along to Australia with him as he comes at least once a year here!!

  • milwlovesadam

Very very nice Mr Allen. Very sultry and smoky.

  • too-cool-for-school

Ugh, Kris… your voice… *sigh* Great song request and a beautiful rendition.

  • girlygirltoo

because of doing Grammy press today, Kris and KAB didn’t have time to figure out a new cover song for tonight’s show, so they did the Oh My Sweet Carolina duet with Jillette again

  • Kariann Hart

Kris has a beautiful voice and his persona is sexy.  I must say I also love Siobhan Magnus’ version!  Both are terrific!

  • Jenny Williams

and Phillip Phillip’s version is amazing too. He completely re-worked the song, and Erol’s guitar playing is sensational. I’d like to see people cover PP’s version.

  • Incipit

I must say I also love Siobhan Magnus’ version!  Both are terrific!

I’ll agree – That was the first time I noticed Siobhan, and I thought the woman’s take on “Wicked Game” was excellent, as were her vocals. I bought that, it lost nothing in the translation, or even by being shortened to fit Idol’s chintzy time frame, IMO.

But this song is justly known for being evocative – sultry, sensual, whatever adjective one wants to use there – and many bands have covered it, not all of them well. IMO. Of course, that’s subjective.

Listening again to this version, the background singing from the band and the sweet harmonies at the end, juxtaposed against Kris’s smoky vocals in mtifan’s video, I was impressed by how well they interpreted the song without doing any structural damage. It was so skillfully built by Chris Isaacs to convey a haunting atmosphere of yearning with the phrasing of those lyrics, the dramatic tension built into that music, and the ‘tone’, and the textures of the vocals were very faithful to that intent, while still giving it a ‘grungier, smokier’ slant, as Eilonwy pointed out. Tricky thing to pull off, IMO – and they did. Good musicians there.

I wasn’t aware until recently that it was written in Dorian mode – B Dorian, I am told (Music theory isn’t really one of my skillsets, but I try.) –  but a partial list of some other songs written using Dorian Mode would immediately bring that haunting quality created by the ascending and descending phrases and the major/minor notes to mind.

“Scarborough Fair”, “Billie Jean”, parts of “Eleanor Rigby”, and Surprise! “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple – are a few. Something about the way those songs are constructed also resonates, like “Wicked Game” does, I think. And when a cover artist messes with that structure because they don’t see it as integral – it falls like a house of cards, also IMO…and also subjective.

  • Elizabeth

I just finished watching SnapCracklyPop’s You Tube video and her close ups for this song are to die for.  She’s also got a great video of 7 Nation Army and Shut That Door – Kris & Cale and Kris & Chris :) – they are all having so much fun with these songs.

  • Miz

Seeing the videos that show the full band, I realize it is only Chris Torres doing backup/harmony on this. Their voices compliment each other perfectly.

  • Eileen99

    This is so awesome.

  • durbesque

I agree, Phillip’s version is amazing too.  This one is him alone.  He takes every phrase and squeezes out every bit of meaning and emotion that are in it.  He holds me spellbound.

  • mjsbigblog

This post is about Kris Allen’s version of “Wicked Game” not *insert your special snowflake*.

    No thread jacking, please.

  • nyc57

it doesn’t matter if you are going because kris wouldn’t know anyway.Kris is going to Toronto.i don’t know the date but check his facebook or Little Pawns.

  • nyc57

I don’t really know any of the contestants yet but if Devin Velez makes it to top20,he’s got my vote for having such good taste.Lol

  • David Facenfield

impressive… almost like he’s back on the show doing one of his classic covers
