American Idol season 8 winner, Kris Allen, took his show to the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles last night. His fan request of the night actually came from his opening act, singer, Jillette Johnson.

Listen to the two duet on Ryan Adams’ lovely “Oh My Sweet Carolina” below.

First time I heard the song. Don’t know who Ryan Adams. Maybe I am biased but Kris and Jillette sang it beautifully. It maybe a country song (which I am not a fan of) but I enjoyed listening to it. Their voices blend well together.

I loved it–the harmonies were beautiful!! They apparently had not even practiced this song together. Sounds like they decided to do it at the last minute.

I had never heard of Ryan Adams or that song, and I honestly did not care for his and Emmylou Harris’ version, but I loved the Krillette version. Kris has a way of making me love songs that I initially do not like. :)

I commented in the Headline thread but, again, Jillette and Kris did Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams proud. This is so beautiful. I love how Kris’ voice melds with a female voice. I hope he has another duet on his next album.

Loved this when I heard it live last night and still love it this morning. :)
Ryan Adams is a fantastic songwriter — this is not really a country song; Adams is one of those artists who is hard to stick in a box, but I used to hear his music played a l on alt rock and AAA stations (and for those who don;t know, he’s married to Mandy Moore)

Not much of a Ryan Adams fan, but this is a great song, and Kris and Jillette did a fantastic job. Wow, girlfriend can SANG!

  • siennalily

Oh Girlygirltoo I can’t even imagine how glorious this was live. When I saw that they covered this I had feelings mixed with anticipation and trepidation since I love the Ryan/Emmylou version so much but Jillette and Kris were amazing. And to think they only had a few minutes to prepare.

    This was very nice.

Did not know that…love Mandy Moore. Thanks girlygirl.

Paul McDonald sang a Ryan Adams’ song (Come Pick Me Up) on Idol.  Remember? Jennifer said she didn’t know who Ryan Adams was.

Ryan Adams is a fantastic singer-songwriter, sort of a mix of alt-rock-country-rockabilly. His album, “Gold” is one of my all-time favorite albums by anyone. He has a really unique voice, and his songs are often heartbreakingly beautiful, much like this one. I was there last night, and I have to say, it was such a beautiful thing to experience this live, in this intimate venue. The fact that they hadn’t really even rehearsed it, but were just sort of messing around backstage right before Jillette started her set, and decided to do it, is amazing to me. Just gorgeous.

Btw, MJ, a little Idol tidbit from the show, Michael Orland was there, and Kris called him out from the stage, thanking him for being one of the people responsible for him being where he is today. It was a really sweet moment.

I have a feeling that both Kris & Jillette know this song really well, because they sailed though it like they’d been rehearsing it for weeks, not just for a few minutes before they actually performed it. Sometimes Kris isn’t totally familiar with the lyrics of the song requests he does, but not last night :)

  • mzhallcat

I never heard this song before but that was just beautiful. I will have to check out Ryan Adams. One of the perks of following Kris is that I’ve been introduced to new artists and songs that I enjoy but never knew existed before he covered them.

Is Michael Orland the AI person who referred to Kris as “the quiet storm” when he was on AI? Or was it the band leader?  Can someone refresh my memory? I always thought that was an appropriate description.

  • mtlfan2

    lovely duet!

Love this! Can’t believe that they only rehearsed this for a few minutes. Beautiful!

I’ve watched this video over and over already, and yet it does not do justice to watching it live. Kris’ voice seemed so deep (sigh) live, so amazing.
His voice is not “powerful” but wow, incredible.

A full set of his videos from last night is posted and in the middle of Rooftops, he mentioned that “this song is for my beautiful wife who’s having my beautiful baby, and I don’t care who knows it”.

Awwww, and he looked so giddy saying that, so nice to see.

  • lovetheusa1776

Beautiful song – nicely done here.  Think almost anything by Adams is a good fit for Kris.  “I Love You but I Don’t Know What to Say” – and dozens more.

  • Miz

This was so fantastic live. Rich and beautiful and the audience went crazy. The entire night was just awesome.

    Miz,
I posted this  a few minutes ago in the thread from last night. I brought it here so you would see it.
SO glad you went to see Kris. I’m shy too but I did talk to all the guys
at the first show I saw a couple of years ago. My husband was taking a
picture of me with Torres and he couldn’t get the camera to work and I
just laughed and told him to take his time cause I was standing there
with that gorgeous creature’s arm around me. Shy? Not then lol. You’ll
want to go to all the shows Kris does within a decent distance form you,
    for sure.

  • Triskel4

This is lovely.  A few of the things I’ve heard from Jillette Johnson have seemed kind of “shouty” but this sounds great.

Lyndsey Parker was also at the show & tweeted: My Berklee College grad friend has informed me that @KrisAllen has “perfect pitch.” #thingsialreadyknew

Lyndsey also had a tweet chat with Kris’s
    Mom.

    Lyndsey: It is
    worrying me that @KrisAllen
keeps banging a tambourine against his broken wrist. #stopthat

    Kimberly Allen: @lyndseyparker The
doctor says he needs to use it, guess he listened

    Lyndsey: @allen_kimberly Okay
    then! Looks painful though!

    Kimberly Allen: @lyndseyparker the
pain will come after the show I’m sure. He’s a determined boy!

This was beautiful.  It wasn’t the song I requested but the harmonies between Jillette and Kris were beautiful and you would have thought they’d been singing together for years.   The show itself was so so good.  I brought a neighbor to the show.  She knew of Kris from Idol but didn’t really follow.  She thanked me for bringing her about 5 times or more.  She loved it.  I may have said this in the other thread,  so apologize for duplicating if I did but it’s true.

I love the way Kris just mingled after the show in the back.   I tend to think if this was a mid sized venue, he would not and/or could not have done that.  So there’s a lot to be said about small venues.  Much more intimate and much more sociable.   Kind of like one big party which is kind of like what it was at The Hotel Cafe.

  • luly

    That was beautiful!

So glad you decided to go and not surprised at all that the entire night was just awesome. :)

    Lovely song — beautifully done!

  • linsmile

Beautiful - certainly even withough considering that they didn’t really practice.  Impressive that it is so beautiful without practice.

I, too, was not familiar with this song.  I will admit to confusion.  Ryan Adams?  Oh!  Not ~Bryan Adams!  /o  I will definitely take a look at ~Ryan Adams.

  • hoosiermama2

Lovely performance to listen to before heading off to bed. Glad everyone had fun at the show!

  • macfae

    Really lovely.
I was a bit hesitant to listen because I am such a huge Ryan Adams’ fan but was too curious not to with it being Kris
Ryan is a brilliant songwriter and am so pleased to read that people plan to check him out.

  • opalruby

I haven’t really liked Kris and Jillette’s duets on Love Me Not since I think Kris always sings rings around her (it’s almost like she can’t hear herself and sings too loud and not very tunefully at times).

But this was lovely. Kris is always awesome and Jillette sang with more restraint. Very pretty. Could you call this sound Americana? I love its timeless quality.

  • Miz

Thanks. This was my 2nd time seeing Kris. I saw him last year at the Mint. I think I should just stop thinking that the ‘Idol bubble’ is reality. It is not.

On Jillette – her set was VERY LOUD even though it was just her voice, her keyboard and a cellist. I had read some comments regarding the HC acoustics on yelp that some shows are too loud, so I chalked it up to that. However, when Kris and his band came on the sound level was very pleasant.

I think her voice can be best described as strident. This song and the duet of ‘Loves Me Not’ are still lovely, though.

Lovely duet . I love how well Kris’s voice blends in duets -male & female.
I can’t believe Jennifer Lopez didn’t know who Ryan Adams was -he’s been around since the 90′s & is regarded as alternative country in America. He’s quite well known here in Australia as well. My kids really like him & have quite a few of his albums.
Glad at Kris’s concerts are going well. Hope he doesn’t delay his wrist being healed by banging it with a tambourine. Not sure that’s what the doctor meant when he said move it.

  • ehowders

They sound great together:) Anything Jillette sings is amazing though<3
