Kelly Clarkson performed her second single, the Kara DioGuardi-Katy Perry penned “I Do Not Hook Up” from her latest album All I Ever Wanted on last night’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

I love this song. Kelly sounds great.

I hate this song. Kelly sounds great.

  • May

    ^^LOL Gingerly. It’s a guilty pleasure.

  • Duke

    I thought black was slimming?

  • JulieR

I have a feeling the comments in this post are going to be more entertaining than watching the video. LOL

  • dbt

I tuned in to Leno at the end and didn’t hear the musical guest announced. I had NO idea who that was for much of the song. Not to be negative … but that song… YUK. And nothing personal Kelly, but style-up before coming on TV. It shouldn’t matter, but people will be talking about how bad you looked instead of focusing on your music. Overall, thumbs down for that performance.

  • dv

Great performance, I thought Kelly looked good.
Its not my favourite song on the album but i can understand why they released it.

  • NOLA

She really looks bad and it reflects in the music.

  • bjames

i adore kelly. she sounded awesome. i even love this song.

but she looks like a hostess at ruby tuesday’s. come on!

  • Laurie

LOL at what gingerly said and completely agreeing with the comment! For me Kelly looks very natural and I sort of like it after seeing the likes of Lady Ga Ga. Kelly doesn’t need the artifice and the gimicks because she can actually sing! I am still far more interested in past contestants than anyone on the show this season.

  • yeahyeahsure

    Loved it! Kelly’s awesome.

  • ppwars

What WAS that thing she wuz shaking!

  • maria4hitz

Kelly and Adam are the best singers to ever appear on AI. And they couldn’t be more adorable!

Her ass? I seriously watched the entire thing again (and I seriously don’t like the song) and saw her shaking nothing that isn’t part of her. I’m absolutely ok with her size. She looks like a normal woman to me. We come in different sizes and shapes and it’s all good. You don’t have to have any certain shape to sing well, and it’s not something I think we should be teaching young girls that they need to be a size 2 to be worthy.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

So no matter if you are talented or nice or smart…if you don’t meet societies standards for looks (size fucking zero) you still suck and we are gonna ridicule you? Was she unwashed? Were her clothes dirty? And just exactly HOW many people out there look like the mini models?

  • AC

    She sounded AMAZING!

  • latingrl2005

Maybe Kelly should start puking and doing coke to make people happy? Because once she’s a size 2 her music and singing should get soooooo much better.

  • thesheriff

awe, i just love her to pieces, though i prefer the more bluesy stuff.

you know, maybe it’s a freudian thing, maybe because the song was co-penned by kara it is easy to dislike? there kara goes trying to use the “in” words/phrases….(“hook up”) just like on the show.

I was going to suggest a sensible diet, exercise and not having that comforting “cookie” when she gets home at night, but, as they say, whatever works.

Seriously, Kelly is a doll and she could be rail thin or fifty pounds heavier and I would think so. Personality, intelligence and, irrespective of the size of the package, pretty easy on the eyes. Plus she is a great singer, which is still has to count for something.

  • cheese

Kelly sounds amazing. This song works better live than “My Life Would Suck….” even if it does have the stench of Kara and Katy Perry on it. So maybe she could use a little volumizer in the hair and a little color in the wardrobe. Who cares?

Most young girls are going to turn out looking more like Kelly than like the Pussycat Dolls and I’m glad she’s out there for them to look up to.

  • Thea

don’t like this song at all. please don’t let Kara turn every song into watered down rock/pop bs. sorry, still like Kelly but this is cookie-cutter fake rock

  • Tess

Kelly reminds me so much of the young singers of my day…Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy, Carly Simon, Karen Carpenter, Aretha, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Patti Smith and the list goes on and on. Never the prettiest, but always the most talented. None of the stick thin pseudo talented flash in the pan singers of today compare with the power women that I listened to. Keep going, Kelly, being yourself will get you a place on the alltime list.

  • galaxygrrl

I don’t know, I kinda of think that kelly is already on that list. Betcha more people know who Kelly Clarkson is than a couple of those women you listed. ;-)

  • carnold0630

Would you rather have someone who can look very posh (i.e., Brittany) who can’t sing a note, or someone who is more casual and sings the hell out of a song? I liked this song better seeing it live than hearing it on the radio since her personality comes out and the crowd gets into it. It’s a catchy toe tapping tune to pay the bills and she can get more bluesy here-and-there. She’s a smart and very talented artist.

  • carolinacharms

The song is meh, but Kelly Clarkson has an amazing voice and is a rare talent. Beautiful face. Now, THAT is a superstar.

  • Soulkaren

    I simply adore Kelly! :mrgreen_wp:

  • Lisa

Add me to the don’t care for the song at all side.

    Love Kelly tho!

  • piperlily

She’s too good for a crap song like this.

  • maria4hitz

don’t forget to watch kelly on Ellen tomorrow!

  • s fl sizzler

I just think everything about Kelly is GREAT and better yet ……… REAL! Her personality ~ talent ~ stage presence ~ looks ~ attitude … as uncontrived as you will ever find in the entertainment field. That makes her IMO … very refreshing, likeable and appealing. Besides that she has an amazing set of pipes. Not every bonafide pop star has to lip sync and gyrate on stage.

  • bambambam

I do feel inside that many of the people who bash Kelly for her figure are hoping that she will respond like Karen Carpenter.

OTOH, you should dress up a little for the people when you come out to entertain, just so we can tell you apart from the audience members. Her lack of vanity is to some extent a shtick, too.

Even if you accept the RuPaul Rule — everything is drag, honey — Kelly doesn’t have to balance out the fantasy aspect of her album’s imaging with something way to the other end.

Like I say, it shows respect to the audience when you dress nice, work hard on stage and bow afterwards.

G-girl: Get off my lawn!!! Wait, I mean: the point of Tess’ list is that we (of a certain age) know who each of those singers are, despite the fact that their heyday was in the ’70s (little later for Patti, and of course Cher and Stevie kept going). When I was a little tiny girl, of course. Now if people still know Kelly’s name in 2030, then you’ll be talking.

Of course, some of us will be also be dead by then, or incredibly ancient. But you can come say I told you so on our graves. Or tell the MJ Hologram 3000.

Oh getting old is such a bitch! It seems like yesterday that you could turn on the radio and hear all of these amazing women. Now you turn on the radio and you hear can’t sing women being auto-tuned to death. But they sure make money for the paparazzi, and the slut media, and they sell out concerts to 12 year olds who dress and act like they are 30 and “work” for a living.

Go Kelly, keep it real and I will acquiesce that you are on your way to being remembered as one of the voices of the first decade of the new century. (Geesh, were almost into the teens…and I’m still waiting for the K2 fiasco.)

  • anna in vegas

I loved Kelly on Idol but I don’t like the path she has taken. I know, I know, it’s all about the $ but she sold well way back then.

  • dv

    what path?

  • baxter

Love Kelly’s voice and personality. No issues with her hair or weight, but damn girl, tv is a visual medium. Could you maybe dress up a bit. This was the Tonight Show, not a freakin bar in backwoods BFE. She looks like my frumpy neighbor.

BTW….I hate loathe detest this song. Not at all liking the new album of poppy dance music. Sorry Kelly…still think you are fantastic but not this album

  • jodeb

I thought Kelly looked and sounded fine. The only criticism that I have is the fact that her album covers are airbrushed to make her look like that size 4 that young girls will aspire to by any means.

Nothing wrong with her size. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, but don’t try to trick people, especially those teens who may not see the *real* Kelly on Leno, but will try to emulate a *fake* airbrushed photo.

As we know, that’s where the anorexia and bullemia starts. I am not blaming Kelly. It’s probably the production company, but still, it is sending the wrong message.

  • outofsorts

I don’t like that she’s seemingly sold her soul to get back on the pop scene. Even though her last album wasn’t a hit, and I didn’t particularly like some of those songs, at least it was authentic to her. She has a lot of growing to do in the songwriting area, but she can’t do it if she doesn’t experiment. I thought she didn’t really care that much about continuing to have huge commercial success, but apparently she does.

  • xoxoyc

I Do Not Hook Up is one of my favorites off of the album. It’s very catchy. I think it was a good choice as the next single.

  • Skylark

Kelly looked gorgeous! To me that was just a hip black outfit that probably costs more than my entire summer wardrobe haha. The hair was fashionably flatironed. She has curves … just like Mariah, JLo,
Beyonce etc etc … get over it!!

The song, on the other hand, is not worth her talent imo. But I am sure she is happy to be back on the charts, so good for her!

  • lizland

I’m 0 for 2 on liking the songs off of Kelly’s new album. I still think she is a major talent though.

But honestly, when she comes on the radio I first think it is Pink (and then think Pink isn’t sounding as good as usual) and more recently Katy Perry. Kelly has lost her unique voice to me. The songs seem so recycled and generic.

I don’t have her album, so I hope some of the other stuff will have more soul and highlight the unique qualities in her voice more.

  • thesheriff

and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still waiting for the K2 fiasco.)

I laughed out loud on that!! :thumbup_tb:

  • butte009

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her appearance. Were people expecting a glittery evening gown and tiara? :king_tb:

I can’t say that I’ve ever cared for any of her post idol songs though. Just not my cup of tea. Maybe there was one I liked… still nothing that I would buy. But she’s not put on earth to please me; as long as others appreciate her talent I wish her well. I personally prefer Daughtry and Cook.

The few Katy Perry songs I’ve heard are frivolous drivel. Throw Kara in the mix and you’ve got a real “who cares?” song. Just my opinion…..

  • kimberann

Meh, didn’t care for it. I think Kelly is overrated, sorry.

  • madmike2276

Love Kelly, and I think she looks good regardless, BUT if she was thinking about a diet, she should try the diet that keeps me thin: it’s called stress and worry. :)

  • penzap

IMO, Kelly is way over rated. Yeah she has a great voice but she has zero star quality. Image is very important in this business whether you agree or not. IMO Kelly looks sloopy like she doesn’t care. She seriously needs to wash her hair!!! IMO, she looks really bad.

  • noctem seizure

Kelly and Adam are the best singers to ever appear on AI.

Kellly Clarkson, I agree with. But, have you ever heard of Melinda Doolittle? Clay Aiken? And there are other former contestants who I think just may be able to sing rings around “the great Adam Lambert” as well.

  • RemusL

The song is growing on me and I thought Kelly looked and sounded great.

  • sammy

Kelly didn’t look great. She looked okay for a walk in the park. The song was not good. Who would expect more from Kara and Katy? Kelly is better than that. Who says that it’s a choice between hefty and bulemic? Where’s that middle ground?
