Kelly Clarkson – Radio City Music Hall – New York City (VIDEOS)

Kelly Clarkson performed “My Man” from the Broadway musical Funny Girl and “I’d Rather Go Blind” (a tribute to the late Etta James)  at Radio City Music Hall in New York City Saturday night.

Those tunes were just two of the highlights from an amazing set of songs that included many of her most beloved hits and a generous sampling of tunes from her latest album Stronger.

Kelly told the audience that Saturday was the first time she ever set foot in Radio City Music Hall, and with Sony executives and her pal Reba McEntire in the audience Kelly was PUMPED UP and ready to go.

Kelly also performed an intense and dramatic cover of Florence + the Machine’s “Heavy in Your Arms”.  “My Man”, the result of a fan who requested “a Broadway song”, was worthy of The Great White Way. (“I’m a Broadway geek!” Kelly told us).  “Kelly wanted to pay tribute to Etta James, but instead of singing the popular “At Last” (Kelly’s Idol audition song) she chose her favorite of Etta’s songs, “I’d Rather Go Blind.”

The encore featured a moving and gorgeous acoustic version of “Never Again” that led into an updated reboot of “Miss Independent.” Kelly’s cover of Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” gave me goosebumps. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Kelly’s “Don’t You Wanna Stay” duet with a virtual Jason Aldean who loomed like Gigantor on one of the giant stage screens.

So much awesomeness.

A big shout out to MTV Idol guru, Jim Cantiello, who happened to have an extra ticket to the concert.  I thought I would have to skip Kelly this time around because  none of the Boston concert dates were working out for me. I’m so glad I didn’t have to miss.  And if you are at all a Kelly fan…make sure you don’t miss either!

Kelly seems very happy nowadays, I lover her setlist that allows for one or two surprises per show.
    Thanks for sharing Mj.

4 covers done in tonight’s show, and ALL of them slayed by KC! I just love the “Fan Request” section because it’s a different song each show :D

Congrats Kelly on tonight, just by seeing the videos they’ve posted, the tour gets better and better each time! Can’t wait to see you in San Diego!

The first and the best Idol. No doubt about it.

    The first and the best.

Stunning. I love how different her voice and style is between these two songs alone.

“Goosies” to plagerize someone… This is the difference between a career 12 years on and one that’s 1-2-3 years past Idol… I am in awe of 2012 Kelly Clarkson!

Amen to what’s been said above …. And so nice to see a shining example of actual great *singing* building and sustaining a pop-music career!

I’m so glad Kelly’s New York show went so well! Her cover of I Would Rather Go Blind is awesome – she really puts that rasp to awesome use. Repeat listens for me this morning!

I was at last nights show and Kelly was terrific. She sounded fantastic. She was definitely pumped for the show – constantly saying how excited she was ( leading to my husband joking all night long ” do you think she’s excited? I can’t tell!” ). I like Kelly, have downloaded all her hits , but not a big fan if that makes sense ( don’t follow her, buy all her CDs etc, had never been to a show). I really really enjoyed her show. Absolutely loved the acoustic Never Again/ morphing into Miss Independent at
the end of the show. Everything she sang sounded great. She is the last of the big pop divas to just sing with her band rather than put on a spectacle. I love spectacle, but it’s nice, for a change of pace, to just hear someone sing ( and sing well)

    Totally awesome.

“My Man” was never really Barbra Streisand’s song.  She may have sung it in Funny Girl, but it was first made famous by Fanny Brice in the Ziegfeld Follies.  That’s the real-life entertainer Funny Girl is all about.  Same goes for “Second Hand Rose” and “I’d Rather Be Blue” among other songs Streisand sang in the musical.

Wow, she really can leap tall buildings, huh? I am in awe, nobody does it better.

A couple of people on my twitter feed were at Kelly’s concert last night and they were raving about how amazing she was. I haven’t ever seen her live except at the AMA’s a couple years ago, so I’m excited to go to her concert here in LA in April

I remember learning a while back that My Man was not in the Broadway musical Funny Girl–but used in the film version. I was surprised by that. I just wiki’d it and it said that Barbra S. had it on her album that was out around the time she was appearing on Broadway. They used it later in the film. Besides Fannie Brice who made the song famous in the US–they said that Billie Holiday later had a jazz hit with it.

Kelly really has a wonderful voice. Would love to see her one day. So happy that you and Jim C were there!!

Kelly seems so confident and in such a good place right now.  I’m excited to see her in March!

“My Man” was, to use a Simon term, “brilliant.”

    Beautiful song, beautifully performed.

One of my all time favorite songs. I love Babs, but, seriously, Kelly should put this one in her concert set list.

I just love it when young, very talented performers pay homage to the past.

The NYC crowd really showed KC a lot of love. Such a talent!! Singing effortlessly pop, country, R&B, stripped down just with a piano, dance, and then throws a broadway tune just for fun, lol. This girl has such a love and appreciation for music. Glad you had fun at the show!

Every time I hear Kelly sing and think that AI would not have been the same juggernaut if she hadn’t been the first winner. She owes the show a lot, but they owe HER too!

I was there live with my wife, and we both said it was the best concert we’ve ever been to. Perfect venue, amazing crowd, and Kelly sounded the best I’ve ever heard her.

Absolutely amazing and she even did my favorite under the radar song of hers — I Want You — and turned it into an extended interactive crowd pleaser!

  • RustySax

OMG!  “My Man” was astounding!  She beautifully changed the melody from the original, but not enough to make it unrecognizable.  What a joy!

Coming from a Broadway number to Etta James soul – how many other singers today can pull that off?

Can’t wait to see her again when her tour swings thru CA in March.

For those of you who haven’t seen her in concert – GO!!!

FYI Kelly got RAVE REVIEWS all around from the local NY papers. Newsday’s Glenn Gamboa called her a real artist and was really impressed. I am so happy for her.
