I would have been more impressed if she squeezed in A Moment Like This and Breakaway

She needs to up her stage production for this type of events; can’t just depend on vocal for this type of show and be forgotten amongst others.

After Kelly kicked off her performance with that big of an AI shoutout (not to mention her liner notes for the GH: Chapter 1), I think it should and hope it does put to rest any remnants of the “Kelly distancing herself from Idol” meme. Maybe there was a short period 8 years ago with The Firm where she was pushed that way but, that shouldn’t outweigh the many times she’s embraced AI. The fact that she’s been so open about embracing AI 10 years after her win when she’s coming off yet another Hot 100 #1 and has so much momentum unrelated to AI says it all IMO.

Kelly sounded great! The shoutout to the SUBG video pillow shredding was so much fun. Medleys can be disjointed and this one was, plus the ending was kind of limp. I was really frustrated not getting to hear her being able to build the arc of a single song. Those clunky boots didn’t let her move though the production made up for that. But, she really did sound great.

AMAZING performance, one of the best of the night. LOVED it.

  • Nadine_Bitch

wow she sounded so goooood! I liked it the way it was, no over production to distract from her vocal prowess. A great performance, indeed! well done, Kelly:)

  • hayes

I agree with everything you said. I think anyone who goes on Idol has an impossible task of distancing himself/herself from the show even if he or she wanted it, just because of its huge popularity. That is a testament to the show itself — it has sustained success after 10+ years of being on air. I don’t ever hear Miranda Lambert or Chris Young being on Nashville Star because no one remembers that show. So Kelly, even with all her merits that goes way beyond her Idol win, will always be an Idol winner. But yep, I totally agree that the fact that she releases a Greatest Hits cd and still looks back to how she ended up there in the first place is pretty amazing of her.

I also agree that the medley is disjointed, but Kelly sounds great as always.

Loved it! The nod to Idol in the beginning was so cute, and I loved how the dancers were recreating moments from her videos of the other songs.

  • http://twitter.com/lufflyness Jenna

Lol the fact that she doesn’t kind of sets her apart more actually, and I think she very well can depend on her voice because she was one of the top reviewed performers of the night.

Found this picture. Kelly at her Idol audition and at tonight’s performance. 2311 ;)

Kelly will never be more than the Idol contestant, especially compared to Pink, Xtina or even Nicki Minaj who are artists.  Kelly is just a singer, not an artist.

What makes one an “artist”? Are there any other Idols in the past eleven years who fall under this category? Could you please share those examples of real “artists”?

  • suenigma

Couldn’t disagree with you more. And something tells me that artist-Xtina would love to have even close to singer-Kelly’s album and singles sales right about now. Heh.

  • MellyPer1692

When you have a voice like that, you’re never “just” a singer. Kelly’s voice is her instrument and it is glorious.

  • MellyPer1692

I love the performance, but her hair….yikes. In some angles it looks like a mullet.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ENXWTPQX7WDUGFKDMOUHAWCQMY Van

Awkward. Billboard recently released the Top Pop Artists from 1992-2012 and Kelly’s #4! You should read some tweets from the younger generation, they had no clue Kelly was even on American Idol. They know her because they hear her on the radio.

Not to mention Kelly is the only artist that’s had a #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop, HAC, AC, Dance, and Country. Kelly’s instrument is her voice and that’s why she’s lasted 10 years in a very fickle industry. Girl can sing!

What makes an “artist” is believability and Kelly certainly has that. You wouldn’t last a decade without that factor.

I thought that was a clever way to start a “greatest hits” performance by incorporating the Idol concept including her audition number (!) and using her first hit on her own to kick it off.  Having the dancers reenact the parts of the SUBG and Stronger videos was also a great touch.  Ending it with CMB, besides it obviously being her current single, was a perfect song to go with because the song itself is about the arc that that performance was showing, imo.  I also thought the walls behind were great.  And last but not least, she sounded good.  Medleys on these shows are always clunky so I wasn’t expecting it to be much different.  What would’ve been neat was if they did come up with some transitions like they had on tour for the MI/MKIA combo because that was great.

I’m going to have to disagree here.  It was actually stepped up and if she did anything more, people would be complaining that she’s doing too much and should stick to just singing.  With these shows that are packed with so many overboard performances, it’s a nice reprieve when you get a few that are about the vocal.  Afterall, Kelly is known for her voice, first and foremost, she’s not known for huge stage productions.   Some are great (questionable?) at the spectacle performances and lack on the vocal side, some can marry them both together brilliantly (P!nk!!).  There’s a place for everyone and she knows her place.

Shoriagirl, I don’t even know what that means so I’m just going to leave it alone. [buttonsnotpushed]

    Love her!

  • mmb

That was not one of my favorite Kelly performances (and I’m a huge fan, seen her live etc….)…not even close to her best vocally (was pretty shouty) and her outfit was kinda, WTF.  That being said, it was an effective way to sell the GH album and remind people that Kelly is a true blue hitmaker.  I have to disagree with whoever said that she is less of an artist that Pink, Xtina etc.  Kelly has had an incredibly successful career that has spanned ten years; she is releasing a greatest hits package.  That is HARD to do in any day and age. While she doesn’t suspend herself from the rafters or walk tightropes or anything, her live show is plenty entertaining.

I’m sorry but what?!?!?!  Actually, I find it laughable that anyone would call Nicki Minaj an artist over Kelly Clarkson, and really that’s all the argument I need here…

  • bridgette12

I never bought anything by Kelly, but she’s a great singer. She’s not my cup of tea and not someone I would go to see in concert. But having said that, if I had a choice of going to a Kelly concert and Nicki concert, it would be Kelly by a mile. Nicki can put on a colorful show, but I don’t pay good money to see some kind of freak show by someone who lip sync most of the time. Pink, Xtina and Kelly are artist, Nicki is just a fad who will be replaced by the next fad.

  • elliegrll

Kelly will never be more than the Idol contestant, especially compared to Pink, Xtina or even Nicki Minaj who are artists.  Kelly is just a singer, not an artist.

I think that the number of hits that she’s stacked up and the number of albums that she’s sold would be evidence enough to against this claim.  Kelly isn’t treated like most other idol alums.  She, Carrie, Daughtry, and Fantasia have been able to do what most idol alums haven’t, build up fanbases that don’t just consist of idol fans, and because of that those who control the industry treat them just like they would every other artist.  Nobody else from AI is going to have their songs pushed up the charts right when they come up, like Kelly will.  And only the people that I mentioned, with the possible exception of Daughtry and Fantasia, who is in a genre where the audience buys albums and not singles, can release a song and have it top Itunes without radio play or too much promotion.  Kelly can do that.

  • elliegrll

She can just depend on her voice.  She doesn’t need anything else.  That statement reminds me of “Already Gone”, which was struggling before Kelly performed it on VH1′s Diva event, which made everybody in radio realize how good the song is, and forget what Kelly said about it being just like Beyonce’s Halo.

Kelly has the type of voice that gets people’s attention.  Not everyone has a voice like that.

  • girlygirltoo

Sorry, but I disagree. Just because she doesn’t have some OTT stage personality or a lot of production for her performances doesn’t mean she isn’t an artist. Do you consider Adele “just” a singer? Because she doesn’t have any production tricks at her shows — she basically stands (or sits) on stage and sings.

IMO, a true artist should be able to capivate people just by singing on a bare stage. Kelly does that as well as pretty much anyone.

I am a big fan of P!nk’s, and I like Christina, but I don’t consider them (or Nicki) any more of an artist than Kelly, just because they have dancers or crazy production values or whatever.

Kelly is one of the few ex-Idols who actually is considered a relevant artist by people in the music industry. Her track record over the last 10 years is among the best of any pop artist — check out the BB pop charts from 2002. Besides Kelly, how many of those artists are still successful and/or considered relevant? Probably very few.

  • standtotheright

Kelly is just a singer, not an artist.

And Lichtenstein was just a guy who used screens to put dots on canvas, not an artist.

An artist is someone who allows an audience to see or hear things in a new way, with the tools at his or her disposal. Clarkson’s tools include an astonishing ability to phrase songs, the ability to write lyrics and occasionally melodies that reach people, and the awareness of image and how it can be manipulated. She isn’t “just” anything.

I think that they are all real artists.  Christina needs to work on her sound, but for the most part they all have their own brand and style, and they all know what works best for them.  Someone posted a quote from Katy Perry a while back, about how her first label tried to make her imitate Kelly Clarkson, but she was smart enough to say that she couldn’t be successful by doing what Kelly does so well.  Katy built up her own career that’s based on her strengths, and not someone else’s.  The same is true for Kelly.  I wish that all AI alums would learn that lesson, because then maybe those in the industry would see them as more than just AI alums.

  • iani

Kelly is just a singer, not an artist.

I’m not really a fan of her music, I like some of her songs, but I would never say she’s not a good artist. Even though she doesn’t write/co-write all her songs, she delivers a lot of emotions and connections with her audience; she’s doing pretty well in the industry with her “girl next door” image in a calculated musical world of “images” and “performances” we see today.

Nicki is talented, she is the queen of that humoristic, unique style, I would expect nothing but fun and “crazy” when her name appears somewhere(not really with her last night performance).

Pink is great, she often  says in interviews “I’m still crazy”; she’s “crazy” good.

Christina is another story; in my opinion, she’s so chasing the fame and stay relevant in the “pop” successful style of the year, electro/non electro “flavor”, that she’s going down with her artist-image, losing fans and deteriorating her artist persona she has built years ago.

  • http://twitter.com/mwk89 Matthew Kitson

wrong. All Kelly needs is her voice, she doesn’t need a grand stage production. And please, don’t even try to say that the garbage that is Nicki Minaj is more talented than Kelly, don’t make me laugh

  • http://twitter.com/mwk89 Matthew Kitson

Kelly, just like Adele, only have to rely on their vocals. They don’t need a bunch of flashy stuff on stage to distract you

  • CB40

    Thank you!

  • mtlfan2

lol you got a few replies on this.
She’s not theatrical like those you named but for me, her interpretation and the notes she choose to sing scream real artist. imo
