Kelly Clarkson covered one of her favorite country classics in Indianapolis Sunday night.

She sang “Stand by Your Man” by Tammy Wynette without even a whiff of irony, y’all! Kidding. I get it. The song is iconic and a product of a per-feminist era (the 60s).

ETA: I missed the little “maybe” Kelly slipped in there after “If you love him, you’ll forgive him.” Ha. She couldn’t resist being a little snarky despite loving the song unabashedly.

Nevertheless, Kelly’s vocals are achingly beautiful. She’s got the country heartbreak thing down pat.

Watch.

It was good ’til she got to the chorus.  Then she couldn’t resist her compulsion to ruin great songs.

Would love for Kelly to make a country album (not just remixing her pop songs for country)!

Nice job, Kelly! She sounds especially fantastic in her lower register on the verses, and the snarky “maybe” about forgiving him was really funny. It must’ve been hilarious hearing this in the middle of all her songs, do contrasts get bigger than that?

It was good ’til the end because I was sad it was over =(

I’m so glad she covered this! I always thought Kelly sounded great singing these types of songs (I remember a long time ago where she did a couple of Brenda Lee covers for a TV show and they were lovely). My grandpa constantly plays this song and complains about how current singers can’t sing with this type of emotion anymore and I’m just like AHHHH KELLY CLARKSON!!!!!!

Thought it was great!  I have watched a few of these videos MJ has posted of her doing covers, and my only complaint isn’t about her voice. I think she looks better as a brunette.

After a week of misses for me, she brought it back with this one.  I know it’s coming, just a question of when, but there will be a throwback country album out of her and I’ll be waiting for it, happily.  Just a hunch, but I think she does have people whispering in her ear about this.

(I remember a long time ago where she did a couple of Brenda Lee covers for a TV show and they were lovely)

American Dreams!  That was a great show and it was always neat to see modern acts dressed up and singing as an older one.

HA!  I couldn’t make out what it was that she said right there.  That’s funny.

this is one of best cover i have ever heard….kelly you done it again . Thumbs up

Kelly could do a country album if she wanted to – no doubt. It’s easy to tell when she covers a country classic. She has the tone just right, her voice sits right in the pocket, and the emotion is palpable when she sings…must have been a treat for her fans who also like country to be there to hear this cover.

I don’t prefer country, and I really don’t like the 1960′s message of long-suffering woman – no matter how passive/aggressive the lyrics can be interpreted – but ya know, even so  - Kelly knocked that one out of the box.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • suenigma

Oh Kelly, how I love you. That must have been incredible in person.

Can somebody please request a Patsy Cline or Roy Orbison song next? I don’t even think of these iconic songs as Country songs – just part of the Great American Songbook.

Agree on all counts. An outstanding rendition!

I’ve always loved Kelly’s lower register, and yes, the “maybe” was hilarious! lol

The first concert I ever attended was when my Grandma (RIP) took me to see Tammy Wynette when I was a kid. Tammy is a country music legend.  It’s nice to hear Kelly do some songs that are totally uncharacteristic of her to sing lol.

I loved Kelly’s version. She sounded great.

Kelly is fearless and mega-talented.  I don’t think any singer out there could do a better job of learning all these different style songs the day of a concert and then performing them so well night after night.   I’ve never seen anyone even try it.  Kelly is very giving to do this for her fans…good thing she has the talent to back it up.

Thanks, for the link for Brenda Lee cover.  I think Brenda Lee is way underrated who had great success as an international pop star and rockabilly star and than had success as a country star as well.  It is not often a person is in 3 Halls of fame rockabilly, rock, and country.  Kelly did great on it.  I like it better than Stand By Your man cover.

Seems rare to have quality vocals nowadays. Many seemed to prefer non-sense crap music, computer generated, enhanced voice. Standards are getting lower & lower.

  • heartly

I’ve tried for both legs of this tour to get her to do some Patsy with no luck.  lol  She did do a bluesy version of Walking After Midnight on her All I Ever Wanted tours.

Watching those old American Dreams clips reminded me that Kelly did meet Brenda back in 2008 at the Country Music Hall of Fame.  I knew Brenda was a tiny woman, but putting her next to Kelly who isn’t exactly big herself, it really puts it in perspective at just how tiny she is.

Interesting, h jones, I never followed Brenda Lee beyond her early rock music, and had no idea of the three phases of her career. If Kelly covers her early songs, that’s rock, IMO. It certainly was when they were originally played, anyway.

There are quite a few classic songs which started out on rock that Kelly could cover, her voice is very versatile…and I have always liked it – just not the pop music she sings.  The classics with really good bones give her plenty of room to adapt a song to her style, if she wants to.

Seems like everyone enjoys this cover thing; the artist, the band and the audience, which is cool.

Yes Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison please.  Why does Kelly’s lower register seem so much stronger when she sings country??  It’s as if she has a different voice for Country – love it !!

  • Goodvibes27

Kelly is just awesome. She can nail any style of music.

  • heartly

Here’s another good quality video with her talk after.  Says she loves country music, but especially the old country because it sounds so classic and makes her feel like two-stepping.  lol
