The cool Kelly Clarkson continues to be freaking cool. In Manchester UK, on her UK/Ireland tour, she covered “Wonderwall” from hometown boys, Oasis.

The original-flavah American Idol mashes Ryan Adams acoustic cover with the full-blown rock of the original Oasis arrangement. Freaking perfect.

I like both halves but I think it needed more transition between them. But if I had to pick, I adore Adams’ version, so I’d go with that. (The best thing ever done with Wonderwall, however, was Boulevard of Broken Songs, a mashup that includes exactly what one would think it does.)

As for genre-flipping, one of my favorite covers of the last five years was Solange Knowles’ R&B version of the Dirty Projectors’ Stillness is the Move. Recasting rock songs into other genres can sometimes be more enlightening than the reverse, IMO. I wish audiences would give acts who work in those genres more credit for doing it.
