During Kelly Clarkson’s tour stop in Biloxi MI on Tuesday (2/14), Clay Aiken surprised the audience when he walked on stage to sing Journey’s “Open Arms” with Kelly!

The two sang “Open Arms” as a duet when they co-headlined a tour back in 2004. They have remained friends ever since. Aw.

Watch the performance below

Is it just me or does Clay seems to be hanging out at a lot of Kelly concerts these days? Are they collaborating on something? Is he stalking her?

  • Allison

I think they’ve just always been friends, and when they are in the same part of the country they hang out.

  • http://twitter.com/1WaySTweet Ron Simpson

Just you and I didn’t think it was possible to turn their friendship into something awful.

  • Anonymous

2 great voices. I wish the audio was better.
I haven’t seen AI season 2 but a few years back, I watched Clay’s run on it.  Stellar voice but a bit passe on the singing style imo

  • fuzzywuzzy

No, it’s not just you.  Clay has been very public in touting his friendship with Kelly of late.

  • Anonymous

Oh folks, of course I was just kidding about the stalking. I remember that MJ posted a photo of Clay backstage at her Raleigh Durham NC concert, and I believe there was something posted about him being at another of her concerts in yet another city in the audience. But maybe that wasn’t here.

He has a new CD coming out next month, it makes sense he is trying to up his profile with these appearances (even if they are friends) and his Apprentice gig. But it would also be cool if they were collaborating on something……

  • http://twitter.com/1WaySTweet Ron Simpson

It looks like it may be the other way around. She stayed at his house when she was in Raleigh, he took her to dinner and she Twitter bragged that they were at the movies. She invited him to come to Biloxi.

    2 of my favorite “Idols”.

  • breakdown

Haha, I think she has better things to brag about!

  • fuzzywuzzy

“But it would also be cool if they were collaborating on something……”

    Just. no.

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol  How do you know that tweeting it was at her instigation?  And that Kelly invited Clay or he persuaded her to “invite” him?  Clay has seen Kelly perform in the past and never blogged anything, even though he blogged about seeing Ruben and Fantasia.  No, all of this public Kelly love is very recent.

  • MissMyEm

Clay and Kelly sang this together during their Independent Tour back in 2003 or 2004 (can’t quite recall which year).   They were co headliners but sang this for their Finale.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J5DBFW7GJOC6MF6NDQWGL3HZVQ NathalieR

Fuzzywuzzy, what have you got against Clay??

I went to the co-headlining tour in 2004, and it was great! Ahhhh, *memories*. Clay’s an AWESOME singer, especially live. I just wish he wouldn’t make himself into an old fogey before his time. Haha.

  • fuzzywuzzy

The Independent Tour (in 2004) was really great.  This duet closed the show and it was always a highlight.  Nostalgic.  Cute that Clay is dressed the same way as he did during that tour.

  • stargazed

Both Kelly and Clay have wonderful voices and they have always sounded great when blended.  That little video was quite a treat this morning and I don’t care how they got together or why, I’m just glad that they did and we got to see it.

What a treat!  Thanks for posting the video.  Great friends, great voices!  They’ve been friends for years.  Ruben too.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/HZ5CAPHLDTFKEU27LG7GINMZEI Pat

Nice video!  Brings back lots of great memories of when they toured together.  How sweet that they have remained good friends these years.  And from what I’ve read before, Kelly often stays with Clay when she is in Raleigh.  That’s what good friends are for.

  • Trina

This brings back such good memories! The Clay/Kelly fanwars that came out of that tour were pretty ugly but these two were so great together whenever they sang this every night. IIRC he gave her roses when they sang this for the last show..and one of the best moments of the whole tour was when Kelly came out during the last show wearing a I Heart Clay shirt and started dancing with him during his set aww lol. I dont know if Clay is bringing her name up on purpose now but I’ve never doubted the sincerity of their friendship over the years.

  • MissMyEm

LOL regarding the dress.  I was thinking the EXACT same thing.  That’s what he wore back then, but I thought I was making it up.  Ha.

  • Anonymous

Well, that brought back memories!  I thought the audio was good.  Better than we’ve been seeing for Lauren and Scotty’s performances on tour.  Clay can still make the crowd scream.

  • Anonymous

This brings back amazing memories for me as I actually saw Kelly solo for the first time during this tour. Great find.

  • http://twitter.com/1WaySTweet Ron Simpson

” How do you know that tweeting it was at her instigation?  And that Kelly invited Clay or he persuaded her to “invite” him? ”

Clearly he held a gun to her head to force her to tweet that she would slap him if he talked during the movie. No way could it be a couple of friends teasing each other in fun. And of course Kelly wouldn’t dream of singing a song with her friend unless she was paid a hefty sum to go along with the gun/head thing.

    What was I thinking.

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 starfishy2000

Clay and Kelly have been friends over the years. But Clay is new to tweeting. And when he used to blog, it was not very often. So it may seem like he is up to something, its just the public getting a bit more of a glimpse of their interaction. I am glad they stayed friends!

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol  The bottom line is that you don’t know what happens behind the scenes.  No fan does.  I think that Kelly had Clay as a guest because she knows that his career is in trouble and she’s being a good friend.  I also think that Clay is now more public in his friendship with Kelly because of her success (and it gets him more twitter followers, and fans are happy about that lol ).

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I think they are both good for each other in any environment.  They are good friends and know that fans are happy to see an appearance of another Idol on stage.  And when that other Idol has a voice like Clay (or Kelly) they are even more happy.

  • Anonymous

Hell nobody is talking about this being her worst cover.  She sounds okay, but he’s strained and over affected.  What happened to his voice?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I know.  Clay sounded great until the end of 2005, on his Christmas tour that year.  Then, he had a long break, and when he re-emerged to promote his next CD, his voice wasn’t nearly as good and he’s never recovered. He was on Paxil (and maybe other meds) for panic attacks, so that could have messed up his voice. He started having problems with his voice breaking a lot. Plus, there were all of those tabloid scandals.

Why does it have to be more than friends having fun.  am just thrilled to see them singing together. Love them both.

  • jeff2683

Well that is a fun video!  I read on twitter that this was a fan request.
Great that Kelly and Clay made it happen!  Good for them!

  • http://twitter.com/1WaySTweet Ron Simpson

Not a fan, I’m guessing. LMAO

  • http://twitter.com/MyEyesBabyEyes Judy

Kelley and Clay fan here, they sounded good together and looked like they were enjoying the moment !

  • Jane Sutherland

Clay has been supportive of his idol friends over the years and goes to their performances when he is able.  In an interview a while back Clay said he and Kelly talked to each other at least once a week and they have remained close friends over the years.  We are only hearing a little more about this friendship because social media makes it easier for people to see it.

Did Clay do this for publicity?  It’s doubtful, his name has been everywhere over the past couple weeks as one of the main Celebrity Apprentice contestants.
Unfortunately there are still people who hold grudges.  Doesn’t seem
like either Clay or Kelly would be too happy about that.  They are both
moving forward and singing together was a good way to demonstrate that.

  • Anonymous

Because it’s a concert where people paid money one could say. Not knocking the friendship it is longstanding, genuine…….I love that so many idols form these friendships with each other, I just don’t want to hear her sing with him again.

  • Anonymous

Of course one of the reasons he did it was for the publicity. He has something he is promoting, he isn’t wrong for doing so. This notion he’s above self promotion belies all evidence denoting the obvious. I ain’t mad at him, get on your grind Aiken!

  • Anonymous

I guess it would be up to Kelly to decide who she wants to sing with so maybe that will keep you from going  to see her concerts again.

  • Anonymous

Touche’. Sorry for having an opinion, doesn’t change it though.

  • Anonymous

Everyone can have an opinion no need to be sorry. Mine is I love that Kelly is a down to earth girl you makes her own decisions. Love that she brought back Clay to sing a song from the early years. They sounded great together.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree.  Especially since Clay just finished telling his fans on twitter that he did NOT want to sing the kind of music that Kelly sings.  He’s mocked Top 40/pop music on his tours and now he appears at a concert of one of the top Top 40 artists of the past decade?  Yeah, a major reason why Clay did this was for publicity, no question.  As you said, there’s nothing wrong with that, just like there’s nothing wrong with Clay gong on the Celebrity Apprentice to try to revive his career.   He’s bluntly told his fans that his recording career is in trouble, so I also don’t get that his fans refuse to admit that he needs all the help that he can get in that regard.  Kelly is a good friend for trying to help Clay out.  I’m just not so sure that if the situation were reversed Clay would be so kind.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Did Clay do this for publicity?  It’s doubtful, his name has been
everywhere over the past couple weeks as one of the main Celebrity
    Apprentice contestants.”

Please.  The man is trying to revive his recording/singing career so any publicity that focuses on that is helpful for him and he knows that.  So does Kelly.  Again, there is nothing wrong with this, but being in denial about it is silly.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m just not naive or in denial about Clay like so many of his fans.  He still can sing certain kinds of song very well, but he’s not nearly as consistent as he used to be.  In the past few years, the best he’s sounded is on show tunes, like when he sang “Home” at Broadway Backwards.  I still like some of his Christmas music, but again that was from 2004.  I don’t know what’s happened to Clay’s voice, but it’s a shame.

  • jeff2683

Thought everyone would love to see this video.
It has Kelly’s introduction of the song and telling how every night on tour that she does a fan favorite to change the concert up some.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hV7Hv5XC6GU
This is the best one yet.

I love the videos.  Clay’s voice is better than ever and he can sing anything.  His new single BBML is really gorgeous.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O5XPI5FTOBODXBJKCM6T3OI2AA PamelaL

Now that’s just untrue.  Both of them have been very public about their friendship for 8 yrs.  E.g., Clay was one of the few artists publicly defending “My December” & Kelly’s run-in with Clive.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O5XPI5FTOBODXBJKCM6T3OI2AA PamelaL

Seriously?  His voice has never been in better shape.  If you listen with an open mind, that is.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O5XPI5FTOBODXBJKCM6T3OI2AA PamelaL

“realistic fans” = you and anyone who agrees with you

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O5XPI5FTOBODXBJKCM6T3OI2AA PamelaL

My favorite Kelly quote was several yrs ago when she happily stated, “I’ll never love my future husband as much as I love Clay!”  :-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O5XPI5FTOBODXBJKCM6T3OI2AA PamelaL

“mocked” = making fun of his own aversion to that type of music & adding humor to very enjoyable concerts

  • Anonymous

I love how some observations about fans prove themselves, over and over again.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Classic, huh?  So predictable.  lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol  Hardly.  He ridiculed songs that were Top 40 hits, sarcastically referring to them as “classics”.  His envy and bitterness was pretty obvious.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I don’t recall that.  Where was he “public” about this?  In the media?  Link please.  Maybe Clay encouraged Kelly to bash Clive.  lol

  • homefair

Well, he certainly encouraged her to leave 19M.  Their close friendship has been very public ever since they toured together in 2004.  Perhaps you can provide “proof” that this is not true.

  • homefair

Btw, anyone who’s heard Clay sing live in the past couple of years knows for a fact that he is in the best vocal shape of his career.  To try to paint him as losing his voice is ludicrous.

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol  The “proof” is that there appears to be no public statements from Clay about his friendship with Kelly until relatively recently.  He blogged about encouraging his fans to see Fantasia and how great she was on Broadway and promoted Ruben and his shows as well.  Nada about Kelly until recently.  I’m not saying that they haven’t been friends, but Clay has not been public about it until recently.

  • Jane Sutherland

Clay has made public statements about their friendship over the years.  I don’t save links thus don’t have the “proof” demanded, but there are articles from the 2004 tour that are interesting.

    Here’s a question and Kelly’s answer–

Are you finding that you and Clay have a lot in common?
    “The
other day (we were) talking about how we can be onstage singing, and
through the show you can be thinking of something totally different than
the song. I could be thinking about dinner that night, or just
    anything.”

Looks like they are both just being honest.  Most likely many singers do the same thing.  Sounds like they had lots of fun touring together and riding in the same bus.  They probably know each other very well after being in such close quarters. The articles of interest–
