Katy Perry’s stint as a guest judge on the upcoming audition round of Season 9 of American Idol was looking a little iffy there for a bit.

Other guest judges like Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas, and Neil Patrick Harris came and went from the panel, without any announcement of exactly when Perry would be taking her seat next to Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson.

But now, Perry tells Mark Malkin in a recent video interview with E News that she “thinks” she’s set for the upcoming LA auditions, and that she plans to be every bit as mean as “asshole” (yes, she went there) and future BFF Simon Cowell.

I think she’ll be great. She IS current which makes her a very relevant choice for AI. I saw her last night in Santa Barbara and she was great. I have never listened to her album, but she seems talented. Strong voice, guitar skills…no bad pitchy moments, cursing or anything unprofessional. The thousands of screaming girls last night kind of reminded me of my first No Doubt concert. I enjoy artists like Katy Perry who take the just “one of the guys” kind of stand in music. It’s cool to witness that affect on young girls. Even if they are kissing each other more than they did when we were in high school! Ha!

I look forward to her contribution/perspective on AI. I enjoyed Gwen Stefani when she was on too. I liked that she was hard on the girls (like Haley Scarnato) who seemed to play up the sex kitten without any grit or substance. I think Katy Perry will take the same approach.

  • LaraC

She’s awesome for this gig. She’s like Kara, only funny and not afraid to say what she really thinks.

  • luvadamlambert

    eh.okay then:)

  • suebrody

I don’t particularly like Katy Perry’s voice live (unlike, say, ADAM’S–listen to the caped one on the results show, Top 3), but she is going to be snarky and real. I can’t wait. If anyone understands the current state of the industry, it’s Katy.

I am really looking forward to the auditions this year all the way around.

  • alxsavage

Can’t wait to see her, she is talent-less, but hilarious. I was just watching her performance of “Like a Virgin” with DJ AM (RIP) and Travis on MTV.com. How can people complain about Megan if this girl has made it in the industry? Yes, her songs are catchy as it can get, and I won’t deny I was cracking up when she started singing “Like a Jonas…” instead of “Like a Virgin…”.

It’ll be interesting to see her and Simon interacting on the same table. I’m glad to know she is gonna be judging after all.

  • Truthiness

She so grates me for some reason. I get she has a succssful recorord, but she has yet to prove she has any kind of staying power.

And Katy, based on how crappy you sounded on the AI show when you performed? deciding to be all “honest,” and tellling people that they can’t sing, will be….interesting. And gee, despite sounding like crap live, she managed to get that one successful album, so isn’t that also interesting how it all worked out.

Well as always there is my fallback, seeing how much lulz there will be watching Katy try and prove how hardcore a judge she can be.

I love this girl. Looking forward to seeing her and her outfit.

  • KrazeeK120

Katy SHOULD be mean to the people auditioning because she’s such a wonderful singer and all….

    /sarcasm

  • PattyH

I love Katy. Sometimes she sounds great sometimes awful and pitchy (like on AI.) Her duet with Ferras, of “Rush” is beautiful and it’s live.

In her defense, nobody on that panel can sing. Kara can sing moderately well, but that’s about it. Paula couldn’t sing. Randy and Simon can’t sing.

What she has that nobody else on the panel has is relevance.

  • Studio57

I’m probably the only one thinking she looks like Rosie ODonnell in the Flintstones, right?

Eh.I have 2 songs of her on my iPod.at the begining of the last school year I kissed a girl and hot n cold were must-haves which u HAD to know .2 out of 4 of those the other 2 being disturbia and so what.
Isn’t next mnth tommorow though ?lol

And yet Randy and Simon had a lot more experience in recording people and knowing what good singing is, even if they can’t produce it. Paula worked with top performers for years, outside of her crappy singing and besides, she was she was the nice one, so she didn’t go on about how she was going to set someone straight about their crappy voices.

Relevance? or luck/flash-in-the-pan? Who knows at this point. She doesn’t have perspective. Just like a Jonas Brother doesn’t. Even Paula had more perspective given her dance work, before she went into “singing.”

  • revcat

Katy has been successful at packaging herself and that, like it or not, is the most important ingredient in the rise to stardom in today’s (and probably yesterday’s!) music industry.

Katy’s only 23 years old, but she’s been hustling in the music business for a while now. She’s an established songwriter who has several number one hits and has also done some producing. On top of that, people know her. She’s extremely popular.

I know I said this in a Katy-related thread last month, but I’ll go ahead and say it again. She’s a very animated personality and exaggerates. The type who tries a sample of food and declares it the best food ever made. If she hears a good song she’ll probably declare it FANTASTIC! or AMAZING! If she has a cold, she’s dying. That type. I know several people like that, who tend to exaggerate and such. It’s just a different personality than what some people are used to. When she says she’s going to set contestants straight, I seriously doubt she’s going to try her darndest to make them rush out of the room and break down sobbing hysterically. I look at it as somebody who’s extremely excited about the opportunity she’s getting. I know if I had an opportunity to be the judge on the biggest show in the country, I’d be pretty excited too. People act differently while excited.

    That’s how I interpreted it.

    Relevance? or luck/flash-in-the-pan?

I don’t think that really matters. She’s had a few #1 hit songs, she’s young, people know her, and she will attract new audiences. That’s why she’s on the panel.

IMO, she’s every bit as credible as Paula or Kara to be a judge. Especially Paula.

  • alison8701

She’s really annoying. She tries too hard to be cute and quirky.

  • evanjane

I actually wasn’t a huge fan of Katy Perry. I thought she was light-weight fluff. My daughter and all her friends loved “I Kissed A Girl”. They’d crack up while singing the chorus. I found myself singing along to it as well.

Not long after, I had a new found respect for Katy Perry when I saw her perform on GMA. Her attire was very “folksy” 60s vibe. She played an acoustic version of “Thinking Of You” and her vocals were beautiful. When I eventually saw the music video of that song, I was quite moved. It was so beautiful, very tragic/romantic and her appearance was totally 1940s starlet. Gorgeous.

Although songs like IKAG and the Vegas one sell records, it’s the songs like Thinking Of You that gets my attention and earns my respect. That said I do like Katy Perry.

  • jammasta

Don’t care much for Katy Perry (Mostly because I thought she was odd looking and that Adam Lambert cape), but I think she can be great as a judge. Not a good live performer, but I think she’d still be great as a judge.

Also, I think I like her hair. Well, so much for her being ugly.

  • luvadamlambert

Haha I lived the Adam lambert cape ( stupid iPod typos…):)

  • revcat

jammasta Are you Scott in disguise? That is the only explanation I can think of for anyone saying Katy P. is ugly! I don’t know why it is so popular in America to bash people’s looks even when it is completely baseless. Baffling!

  • Grammie Kari

    I am not impressed.

  • ianaleah

Katy would definitely be great-she is keenly observant, thinks fast, knows what she is talking about, is honest but nice in choice of wording, is articulate and quite intelligent. And, lastly, hey, she is a current and popular singer to be judging singing.

  • ShariG

From my biased point of view, Katy didn’t have very good taste this past season when she famously supported her favorite while guesting on the show. Don’t care for her and not excited she is going to be a guest judge. She is a flash in the pan from my perspective and not someone who has enough credentials to be a judge. But then Neil Patrick Harris????

  • iluvai

I will always love her for her shout out to Adam during AI. I was super thrilled, but then again, I knew it would make some people unhappy. But I cannot say enough how thrilled I was for Adam. It was epic… :)

  • iluvai

I just hope they dont have Kate from TLC…. That would freak me out. I’m bummed she is going to be a guest host on The View. Be weird, get famous. Ugh….

Katy Perry is a pop princess, love her or hate her. She’s doing what a lot of hopefuls wish they were doing.

  • leeaundra

She’ll be fine as a guest judge. Everything she does is “completely forgettable”. :)

  • iluvai

    luvadamlambert

I loved all your posts from either 8/31 headlines or ??? not sure….

I love your passion for Adam. Very sweet.

  • Chipmunk

I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEE KATY PERRY. I really hope she gets to do her guestjudge stint…She’s really quirky and funny, so it would be fun to watch

Lots of specialists tell that loans help a lot of people to live the way they want, because they can feel free to buy needed stuff. Moreover, a lot of banks give term loan for different classes of people.
