I really like it, but it’s a total ripoff of Sara Bareilles’ Brave. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4

  • Joob

    Love it.

  • girlygirl

Not really…it doesn’t sound like Brave at all. And there are lots of songs with this same theme out there. Kelly Clarkson and P!nk have released a few just by themselves. And so has Katy Perry …”Firework” is very much along the same lines in terms of theme.

This is a solid song. Probably will be another hit for Katy.

  • Tinawina

It’s cool. I’m not mad at it.

  • washpd

Doesn’t sound like it at all? Are you serious? And I’m not talking about the theme or the lyrics. I’m talking about the music.

  • Jason Gorny

i like it! it got a cool vibe to it. like a edgier rock sound?

  • Face

very power pop… pretty much what you’d expect from a Perry song… expect it will do well…

  • Face

maybe it’s me… but I don’t know if i’d use words like edgier and rock to describe it!

  • YankeeFan08

Love it! It’s sure to be another big hit for her!

  • jan

Yeah, I see others saying the same thing. Guess it’s hard to be original.

  • chloe18

I like it. I don’t love it or think it’s anything really different but I definitely like it.

  • chloe18

The beat sounds really familiar in the beginning but I can’t think of where I’ve heard it before. It’s reminding me of some rap pop type song but I can’t think of what it is. The one I’m thinking of is by a male but I can’t place it.

  • jan

Get your popcorn ready because a Katy fans vs Gaga fans war appears to be brewing. If you are not invested in either one it will be fun to watch.

  • iani

Not bad at all, I think is an anthemic pop song on the Imagine Dragons-beat that give that alt rock sound.

  • EB

I hear you. Whether it was intentional or not I don’t know. They are different enough that it’s not too startling but still there are similarities.

I like Sara’s voice better than Katy’s so I err more toward that one, I prefer the song overall too. I don’t think I want to hear ‘Roar’ again, lol. There is something I don’t like about it… I think ‘Wide Awake’ was better.

  • EB

Oh no, fan wars. You can have my share of popcorn! Ok, bye! *hides*

  • Listening

Hmmm did I miss something why would that start warring?

Is this similar to one of Lady Gaga’s songs or is it simply b/c they’re both popular pop acts.?

  • heartly

Both are ramping up the promo for their newest songs/albums at the same time and whether intentional or not, it seems like they’re trying to one up each other. And also, two female pop acts can’t possibly coexist at the same time, in the same space. ;)

  • Listening

I like the song sounds good and the beat is really cool. I bet it’s another hit.

This doesn’t sound like Katy though seems like someone younger singing most of the time.

  • Incipit

This will probably be a big, big hit on Pop Radio, because I only made it 35 seconds in. I ought to have had fair warning from the uniformity of the sound waves…just couldn’t do it. smh. Good fortune to her?

  • jan

Just check the comments on any Katy or Gaga post, new story, or video – you will see the war starting. I guess it’s no different than Idol – you have your favorite snowflake – and he/she must do better than everyone else’s snowflake.

  • J3$$!C@

    Catchy Chorus

  • zaclona77

same feeling here, would it be possible that we are both thinking of this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxtn6-XQupM
it is the first one that immediately came to my mind after hearing the first couple of beats

  • Mateja Praznik

    I really like it.

  • chloe18

omg Yes!!!!!! I was actually thinking of Empire State of Mind and thought of it as soon as you posted this but this is pretty similar too! I kept hearing that beat and a male rapping when I heard her song but couldn’t place it. omg thank you it was driving me nuts.

  • Beaugard Stevens

Yes, sounds like another big hit for her. She really is good at choosing good material.

  • MargieIdol

And someone has already mashed/compared the two on Youtube.

  • Karen C

Not bad, a little more rock in it than her previous older music, which I like. I’m not sure if it will be one of her bigger hits, but I’m sure she’ll get a lot of promo for it, so it might be anyway.

  • Karen C

I get more of a rock feel than I did with her previous music. I agree, it’s a bit like Imagine Dragons.

  • bestmusic

When did she become Avril Lavigne??

  • fuzzywuzzy

Also very good at composing hit songs. Katy co-wrote every song on “Teenage Dream”, and all 6 #1 hits.

Katy Perry is no manufactured pop princess – she wrote or co-wrote her songs every step of the way, including the record-breaking six #1 singles from Teenage Dream.

  • Karen C

THe music and theme do sound similar. It might be a case of them both trying to use a current sound. The final version of Katy’s song might end up being different sounding, than the leaked version, also.

I’m wondering though, if they used a cowriter that was the same, I believe they both write or cowrite their own music, but it could be another case like Halo/Already Gone, where the music was the same because Ryan Teddar cowrote on them both.

  • taptap

I’m not sure this will smash. There’s not much difference – sonically – between the verses and the hook, and I think that makes the song a bit flat/monotone throughout. It needs a bigger sonic break, imo. But who knows, Katy does great and this one might hit.

  • girlygirl

I edited my response after listening to both songs again.

  • taptap

The relative flatness of the audio profile was sort of a give-away ;>

But yeah, I had the exact same thought – not enough distinction between the verses and the hook. It needs a sonic break imo.

  • tripp_ncwy

This leak seems too well orchestrated. I guess the label wanted to get it out with a bang.

  • iani

THe music and theme do sound similar

“It looks the same but doesn’t spring the same”, different verge and totally different vibe.

  • Lake

I like this song better than Roar…

  • Gleekeeper

    I love it!!!

  • J3$$!C@

So, I decided to see what all the fuss was about with Sara’s Brave and yall were not even exaggerating. LMAO. I hope Katy gives Sara a piece of the pie when this song is a hit.

  • heartly

I actually like the song. Like others though, I can’t get past the glaring similarities with Sara B’s Brave. Seeing as how Dr. Luke is involved with Katy’s song, I shouldn’t be surprised.

This song is also getting the uber annoying CC hourly treatment, effective today with a rush to iTunes either tonight or tomorrow.

  • Ronnie D

    Very catchy!

  • heartly

    This tweet kills me. LOL

  • jpfan2

Not bad but not as good as one of her TD songs. The lyrics are very cliche.

  • suenigma

I see your healthy dollop o

  • maymay

    I like Kelly`s stronger more.

  • GlambertWLA

Radios already playing it without reservation. Lucky!

  • supersonic

This song is simple as all hell and is a straight rip off of Sara Bareilles. They are basically the same song. Hope Katy Perry gives Sara Bareilles a cut because it’s going to be a hit. It’s just the nonsense that radio of today loves to play.

  • springboard2

I don’t think that it is a rip off of sarah Bareilles’ Brave. They are different songs to my ears.

That said, I find this OK, but not as good as her previous singles. It’s a bit generic pop, in ‘Stronger’ vein but not as good.

Of course, it will climb the pop charts fast, but I wouldn’t predict it to become a memorable smash like many of her previous singles were.

  • Bizmu

Oh they will get away with it, you can count on it. Bruno’s recent song Treasure is also a plagiarized version of another singer’s song, which is Breakbot’s Baby I’m yours. The story is Bruno asked for permission to cover the song for his new album but Breakbot declined and instead of letting it go Bruno just went and copied the song anyway.

  • TheREAL Amanda

I hear it. Sounds very similar. Instead of Brave it’s Roar… good find

  • usedtobelucy

“Guess it’s hard to be original.”

Especially when getting a shot at radio play apparently means that your song has to sound just exactly like everything else that’s being played at the same time.

The “acceptable to radio” styles are so constricting and specific at any given moment that it’s a wonder there’s any variation at all in what people put out.

Hate fashion. And maybe hate it in music most of all.

    Just sayin.

That being said, though, I like both of these songs. Although the superiority of Sara’s singing sure is clear when I’m listening to them both at the same time.

  • Not fit to print

I listened to Sarah Bareilles “Brave” and there are similarities but these two songs were released fairly close together, so it’s unlikely that it was intentional. KP has the POP formula down pat. Lots of remixing the same stuff for radio-readiness these days.

If Roar charts higher than Brave, you could argue that it is due to KP’s POP princess status. She built that – $$$ go to her.

  • Not fit to print

Looks like the ladies themselves are trying to put a lid on it:

These two are quite far apart in sensibility. Lots of room for both of them to hit a home run with their new music. Fun to watch, though; especially if you don’t have a horse in the race.

  • tripp_ncwy

Billboard: Update August 11: Perry’s “Roar” will hit iTunes at 12 a.m. Monday (August 12).

  • Sassycatz

Boring, but expected. (I’m surprised by Sara Bareilles, though. She’s a better songwriter than that Brave song.)

  • girlygirl

Driving home from work last night I heard “Roar” on both KBIG (the primary HAC station in L.A.) and KIIS (the main Pop station). So I have a feeling radio will jump all over this very quickly.

  • Madilo

The song debuted at #50 on HAC today lol

  • iani

She’s a better songwriter than that Brave song.)

Reading on this thread about the two-songs similarities, my reaction to the songs is something like this: if KP song leaves me cold on some parts to somehow pleased with others, the SB one leaves me completely annoyed from start to finish and willing to change the channel any moment. If there is/are for me every year the summer’s hit song(s), the SB-song is on my top of the most annoying and unpleasant “hit” of this summer, P!

  • Karen C

I don’t get radio at all.

  • Madilo

Don’t even try lol but i don’t think it’s radio only, sometimes i don’t get people buying the songs too lol like Harlem shake topping itunes huh

  • jan

It’s very simple – the label has a deal with Clear Channel stations to play the song once an hour (probably for a week) – the same was done for other hit artists. It costs money and favors from the label. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/earshot/katy-perrys-roar-arrives-early-603802

  • Sassycatz

And that’s why they are “hit artists.” It’s so “organic.” LOL!

  • chillj

I’m in boston and was just out; it seems to have jumped here, too. But I have liked other of her songs much better.

  • SM

Prediction: This is gonna be all over the Winter Olympics on NBC.

  • EvilTroyandEvilAbed

Yes. I mean lyrics like “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag” are truly words that will stand the test of time

    *insert dry pause*

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

What ever happened to “show, don’t tell”? The opening verse is supposedly about being shy or some such, with the chorus being the triumphant emergence into a tougher person… but the whole song’s at one emotional (and volume) level, so musically, it’s not actually about growth. It’s just a big “here’s how wonderful I am” statement that doesn’t bother with even the slightest internal tension at any point.

The original Survivor “Eye of the Tiger” referenced in metaphor builds tension with pacing of the drum line flourishes and the lyrics building to the glory notes, even though it’s kind of all done at “loud” with the big four-on-the-floor beat. The lyric is all about rising to the occasion (no “before” state is explicitly referenced) and the music rises to the occasion. Boom! (Ironically, “Eye of the Tiger” also feels more danceable than “Roar.”)

Perry’s song reads like The Breakfast Club thought their story was secretly a Rocky installment. I’ve liked Perry songs in the past, but this time, I’m not convinced.

  • Jaejae1

Oh wow! I like Roar and yes it is strongly inspired by Brave. Verrrry similar!
