Katie Stevens strips the irony from the Taylor Swift tune, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” in her cover of the hit song.

The Season 9 American Idol alum is taking her break up VERY VERY seriously, and she pulls it off. Her earnest performance is lush and emotional. Plus, she’s a WAY better singer than Taylor.

The video features Katie singing cut with scenes of her and the soon-to-be-ex boyfriend, played by Hunter Smit. Charlie Buhler directed.

Watch below.

Love Katie, but dude, she must have retweeted every compliment she got on Twitter. . . .LOL I don’t know why they didn’t support Katie more when she was on Idol. She was better than a lot of the others.

This is possibly my favourite cover of this song. Love it.

Here is Brielle Von Hugel and her friend Justin covering the song

A pleasure to look at and listen to – good job, Katie.  And, yes, big improvement on the original because of her voice.

I think Katie is the perfect example of what happens to most of the talented top 10 or 11 that didn’t win or come in second. They end up with a slight leg up on other talented non-reality show folks  but not much else.  I think it is further proof that if you get a contract and put out an album right away and never take your foot of the gas that is your best shot (not your only shot example Casey James)  at making a name for yourself after idol.  Katie is extremely talented she might break through into TV or movies.

Wow. This version actually makes me like this song. Katie’s got potential. She’s got a great voice and she’s very pretty. The emotion she puts into this basically fluffy song turns it into more than it really is. That takes some skill.

Always liked Katie Stevens, and this is surprisingly good. And so is Hunter Smit…

Very nice!  Katie does a much better job than Taylor.  You know, she could pass for Kelly Monaco’s (DWTS) younger sister.  Such a pretty girl; I hope she gets a break.  She’s going to play a Princess with Kat McPhee, right?

  • Caro3278sweet

    And so is Hunter Smit.

    Ah yeah. ;-)

  • DB987

Katie’s voice is without saying so much better but I think the song is fluff and works better as fluff the way TS performs it for me.

I don’t know if I agree with this. And not just because of my special snowflake’s choices either.

I think the key is to figure out what kind of music you want to make and who your audience is. Instead of slamming out an album designed to satisfy all your AI fans, with a miss-mash of different songs showing no clear direction for your music, better to take your time, figure things out and then launch. Sometimes that will take a peep a month or so – sometimes two years.

I always liked her, but after seeing her recent youtube covers, I think she is one of those teenagers who would have benefited from waiting a few years of trying out for the show. There are those who didn’t need to wait(Paris, Jordin, David, Allison, Scotty, Skylar, Jessica) and those like who have improved SO much since the end of their seasons that it would have benefited them.

  • Chicagolaw

Except it’s the irony that makes the song, imo. Strip that away and you are left with syrupy fluff that’s not worth the effort.

Katie is ok, but there are probably thousands of “Katies” She just doesn’t stand out much.

I think in part because Katie has improved tremendously since she was on Idol.  When she was on the show, she wasn’t bad really, but she also wasn’t really standing out in a good way either.  Mind you like most she got a lot of conflicting feedback from the judges, which I think just got her confused.  But as someone else said, she’s someone who probably would have done a bit better with a few more years of experience under the belt.  She seems like she’s grown up a lot in the past few years.

What I think is you have to work with the hand that is dealt you and make the best choices for you.  Clearly if you put out a bad CD your fanbase is not likely to grow but diminish.  But I do think that you can put out decent CD in a short time that speaks to your fan base and hopefully beyond and be true to who you are and what kind of music you want to make. Lauren speaks passionately about the songs she choose for Wildflower and I actually think for her age they were really great choices so for her I think it worked  to get her CD out quickly and capitalize on being a hot topic right off the show. It has allowed her to solidify and build her fan base. Bottom line more then one road is possible to get where you want to be.

It has allowed her to solidify and build her fan base.

We’ll know if this is true when her second album hits. I am a fan of Lauren and her voice. But I don’t think a person can claim she’s done the above until we see what happens to her as she pulls farther and farther away from AI.

Bottom line more then one road is possible to get where you want to be.

This I agree with totally. ;-)

  • DB987

Ya  I didn’t mean to over state that I just am going by her concerts of late that have been drawing better crowds like tonights in Salem Va it is a radio show at some fair she is the headlining act  and its sold out. I do not even know how big it is most likely one or two thousand but she wasn’t selling those out at the beginning of the summer. But you are correct the second album will tell more.

Sorry everyone just realized this was Katy’s thread forgot where we were.

  • roarpen

     Nice job.

Might be my computer speakers, but I felt the instruments were overpowering her singing. Would have preferred to hear her voice clearly at the forefront.

  • julesb2183

I thought Katie was one of the most marketable people in her season. Certainly more than Crystal or Lee.

  • arkboy

This song sucked so bad when Taylor Swift unleashed it on an unsuspecting world why would anyone want to cover it?

  • zjzr

It was a very good cover of Katie! I think her voice is good for the pop genre and hopes she gets her bigger break someday.

I remember during S9 she has a good vocal, but her major problem was she is so pitchy that she needed to fix and her stage presence, add to the conflicting advice from the panel (do R&B, do Country, do Polka, etc.) made her performances just sub-par IMO. It wasn’t until “Let It Be” that she got her groove (not sure what Simon thinks that it sound Country) and I thought she didn’t deserve to be part of the double elimination with her sassy “Baby What Do You Want Me To Do” (which is kind of poking at the way the judges treat her). I hope her and her fellow non-instrumentalist teenage (during their run) singer Aaron Kelly would have a great break cause they were quite underrated during their run.

  • overthetop1

    Why did she make this?
