Katharine McPhee has signed with Verve, the well respected Jazz and Blues label. Her label debut will be released by year’s end.
From today’s Billboard:

Former “American Idol” star Katharine McPhee has signed a new deal with Verve, Billboard.com can reveal. The artist is recording her label debut, due before the end of the year.

“The album she is working on will show many new sides to her talents as an interpreter and a songwriter, and show everyone just how special she is,” Verve Music Group president/CEO Bruce Resnikoff says.

Verve’s impressive roster of artists include, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall, Loreena McKennit, Blues Traveler and Queen Latifah.

Congratulations, Katharine!

It’s always nice to see somebody wind up where they belong. Kat will do well if she winds up with the same kind of career as Diana Krall.

Hey, anybody know how Melinda can be reached? She says she’s a fan of Jody Watley’s and she’s recorded one of her songs. I want to see if I can connect the two of them since I have had some dealings with Ms. Watley.

Hmmmm. If this is a jazz album, I will definitely have to pick that up.

Wow! That’s fantastic news for Katharine. Good luck to her!

  • SallyinIllinois

This may be where she belongs….I’m sure Dave Foster had something to do with it….but you know, she’s been around and around….tried this and that….and this seems like her last chance.
Pretty girl, OKAY voice not distinguishable, needs a lucky break. (and she’s competing against all the recent AI alums from Carly to Joanna)

  • http://myspace.com hgzaj

MJ- Do you have any news on the album she is supposed to release with David Foster that was apparently due sometime this Spring?

  • BootStar

Wow, this seems like great news for her. Never been a big fan, but this sounds like it’s right in her wheelhouse. I look forward to hearing what she does. She always struck me as much more the sophisticated chanteuse than some ditzy pop star. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” = lovely; “Over It” = yuck. YMMV, and all that!

  • star

An album of standards from Kat would be SWEET!

Oh, and I saw The House Bunny recently and thought it was really cute. My enjoyment had nothing to do with Kat and everything to do with Anna Faris, but still! That was a good thing for Katharine to be a part of.

  • Glamour

Congratulations! This is exactly where she should be and this is a good match.

ARISTA – you got it all wrong and you definitely blew it. Trying to make her into a teen pop star was so totally wrong for her. I knew that cd going to be a BIG flop. I don’t blame Kat at all – this is ARISTA’s fault, but hopefully Kat can make a comeback for herself.

  • forlife

Congrats. I think she her voice goes nice with this genre.

  • uplink2

Great Great news for Kat! She is the first Idol in history to be dropped by a major label and be re-signed by another MAJOR label. Verve is a label of great quality music. And going forward we will finally get to hear the truly unique and talented young woman she is. I am just so happy about this news!!

    Congratulations Katharine!!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Verve isn’t a major label in the technical sense, but it’s been around forever, and does have a very good reputation for creating quality music.

ETA: nm, I see it’s owned by Universal Music Group…so it is part of a major label.

  • shell29

Aw, good for Kat! I think this will be a better fit for her. Congratulations!

  • itsalleternal

Go Katharine! You can make the comeback and prove 19E wrong! She was definitely screwed over by them…

A new artist NEVER makes the type of cd they want to make. An artist will NEVER diss their work – how is that good marketing?

Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Kat say she made the type of album she wanted to make?

Back during the PR blitz for the album, the angle was that Kat told the suits what kind of album she wanted to make, and got her way. It probably didn’t go like that, but that was the spin at the time.

And in fact, she did scrap some early stuff to take the album in a new direction, that’s why she didn’t release until the end of January, rather than in November/Dec with everyone else.

ETA: I wrote about it back in November of 2006

    http://mjsbigblog.com/1042.htm

I got my ass kicked for that one. LOL.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

She only had one performance on the show that I liked. The first album was a mess. This upcoming project, as others have said, seems to be a perfect fit for her. After all, her audition, with “God Bless the Child” was exceptionally good.

That first album was a mess.

She’s getting another chance. Hopefully, she got it right this time around.

  • sma11ie

ARISTA – you got it all wrong and you definitely blew it. Trying to make her into a teen pop star was so totally wrong for her.

This is interesting. Why didn’t this work? I never watched Kat’s season, so my understanding might not be complete, but I got the impression she succeeded on Idol mainly with older-sounding ballads. But isn’t that similar to Archie and Jordin’s paths on Idol? Why is it that Archie and Jordin were able to re-brand into believable teen pop material when Kat failed? Is it their age, or that Jive is just much better at this kind of artist? I also remember hearing David Foster say near the end of season 7, when asked about Archie’s commercial prospects, (paraphrasing badly from memory) that Archie would absolutely fail if he tried to go the pop route. I remember thinking he must have been thinking of Kat at that point. Anyway, I’m glad Archie went the pop route because David Foster stuff makes me Zzzzzz…

  • Glamour

sma11ie, age does have a lot to do with it. Archie and Jordin are teens. Kat is in her twenties, but she looks very mature for her age. I did see her in person and she looks nothing like a teen popstar…she looks like a very sophisticated woman and your image has a lot to do with music.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I think it’s a combination of Jive being really good at marketing young, current acts (And RCA, not so much) and Archie and Jordin being able to connect to the music they were singing.

Did Foster really say that? Now I don’t feel so bad for saying the same thing. Of course, Foster is sort of an asshat. LOL.

  • lurksalot

…and a very sophisticated woman married to a guy in his forties. Not exactly the tween/teen image.

  • SashaB

This seems like a great career move for her. Foster is appropriate. Good luck to her.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

My spidey-sense tells me sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a young woman who has yet to develop a clear artistic sensibility.

Well, you said it, MJ. That just might have been the problem right there. I think it’s fair to say that’s the problem with the majority of Idol contestants from any given season.

So…there question remains, is this truly where she wants to go, or has someone told her to go there?

She seems a bit settled now although her newest venture isn’t guaranteed.

I did have to laugh at this, though:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a hit record then Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll try the record thing again and try the movie thing. And then [if those donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t work] Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll just get knocked up and be a happy married woman.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

She has almost completed her list.

  • abbysee

I don’t think that Foster said that exactly, but it doesn’t matter. Well he is an asshat, but that’s another story, lol.

I don’t know whether this is such a great fit or not. I know that her first effort wasn’t a good one. I never liked her on the show. I thought she was okay, but certainly nothing I would be interested in. I really don’t know if she has the chops or the gravitas to do anything approaching say a Diana Krall. I feel that was her problem as far as I was concerned, she is not a great interpreter of songs. Therein lies the rub, imho.

  • sma11ie

    Did Foster really say that?

Yeah, it was on Access Hollywood, when it was down to Top 3 or 2 or so. Anyway, it was near the end. I agree with the asshat comment. He also said he wasn’t sure either David would have commercial prospects, and some other lame things as well.

I love the quote from the CEO of Verve/Universal

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The album she is working on will show many new sides to her talents as an interpreter and a songwriter, and show everyone just how special she is,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Verve Music Group president/CEO Bruce Resnikoff says

    My thoughts exactly!

  • SallyinIllinois

RE: the two Davids….well neither one is at Daughtry status. AI tried to push the “male” teen idol onto the audience and it succeeded. Let’s face it they need a BIG BIG Star like Daughtry, Kelly, and Carrie….a BIG star, and those two davids aren’t anywhere near being BIG yet…or a breakaway star like Jennifer Hudson…..
There’s an age factor involved too. it’s fairly believed that if you’re young you have a better chance of getting contracts, getting noticed, etc….and Kat is quickly crossing that “old” age line in show business.

She can still make a “living”….heck — most of the ex-AIs are making a living doing reality shows, events, singing at sports events, etc….but they’re not BIG stars, selling megamillions.

That’s what AI wants and needs badly.

  • snuffles

I agree. They’re looking for another Kelly, Carrie or Daughtry. The Davids are doing well (as is Jordin), but in Idol eyes they’re success is considered mediocre. Why do you think 19E released Jordin from her contract after only 1 year?

  • Niall

This is going to be a much better fit for her than pop music.

  • jnd1221

This is wonderful news. Katharine is a stunning girl with an amazing voice, but she wasn’t a run-of-the-mill popstar type. A bluesy/jazzy album is perfect for her.

  • StevenD

I think sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a great interpreter of music when she wants to be. She connects to the music in her own way and has a distinct breathy sound to her voice. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s funny because I was listening to her à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Somewhereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from the David Foster concert and I thought there were moments of sonic perfection and then there were things that needed to be worked on. I think that in a studio making the type of music that sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s designed for (as opposed to more of a current sound) she could excel at. I loved her take of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ordinary World: from her last disc.

  • IdolFanatic

Did Foster really say that? Now I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t feel so bad for saying the same thing. Of course, Foster is sort of an asshat. LOL.

LOL. Well of course, Foster wanted him to do the old ballad thing since that is what he likes. This route suits Kat and her voice perfectly. Over The Rainbow and Someone To Watch Over Me were stellar for her on the show and will always be favorites of mine. Showed that she was in a completely different league from the others vocally. And those songs suited her personality too.

I agree. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re looking for another Kelly, Carrie or Daughtry. The Davids are doing well (as is Jordin), but in Idol eyes theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re success is considered mediocre. Why do you think 19E released Jordin from her contract after only 1 year?

Jordin is no longer with 19 Management, but still with Jive which is under the 19 umbrella. It’s far too soon to be calling the Davids successes just mediocre. In this economy, they’re both off to a phenominal start ready to hit platinum status which is incredible even after only a couple months even in a good economy. They all over radio and have a lot of commercial success to back up their sales too. I would most certainly not say their success is only mediocre, especially considering how long they’ve been at it.

  • snuffles

Jive isn’t under the 19 umbrella. It’s under the Sony/BMG umbrella. As for as 19E/M/R is concerened, they washed their hands of Jordin.

But I’ll agree it’s too soon to tell on the David’s. I’m just saying though, in AMERICAN IDOL eyes, they aren’t happy with anything less than a multi-platinum SUPAH-STAH!!!

  • ILoveKatharine

Congrats to Katharine! I love her sooo much! I got to meet her in the summer of 2007 at one of her radio shows here. I saw she performed on Jan 15 in Chicago too. I wish she would come just a few hunderd miles south and perform like that more often.

Can’t wait to go see her again!

  • J.S.G.

Thatks MJ, this is great news for Katharine.

And I, for one, liked her debut album. What killed the album was over-production and inconsistent promotion.
The probblem was not the quality of Kat’s vocals or the song writing.
For example, there is a great ‘jazz ‘version of ‘Each Other’ on YouTube that is a huge improvement on the song that is on the CD.

Well fine whatever concerning Jordin. Thing is, she’s still with her label and doing well for them and herself. Yes, it was a slow build for her, but she sure ain’t no slouch either. They must have washed their hands of Kelly Clarkson too ’cause she has different management as well. Their loss on both accounts if you ask me.

Re: the Davids, they’ll get there, but even Idol cannot expect multiplatinum in just a couple of months. Well Clay did that, but he had no commercial success so it really didn’t matter. I think that Idol is very happy with the Davids and their success so far. The Cook promo on the this season’s AI says that at least about Cook. We’ll see if they give Archie any promo during the SLC show. But I would imagine they aren’t sad for him either.

RCA/Jive/Arista/etc are all labels under the Sony BMG umbrella. 19E is a completely different entity – they are a management/production/etc/etc company – but not a label. The reason almost all the Idols seem to be on Sony labels is 19′s contract with Sony where they get the winner and the chance to sign anyone else they want for a certain period of time. But, regardless of that, 19 doesn’t have control in any way over Sony. Thus, why someone (Jordin, Kelly) can change management and still stay with the initial label.

RCA/Jive/Arista/etc are all labels under the Sony BMG umbrella. 19E is a completely different entity – they are a management/production/etc/etc company – but not a label

Close, but not quite. RCA/Arista/Jive/etc are all labels under the Sony umbrella. BMG sold out to Sony last year. 19E is a television production company. It’s part of the 19 family under the control of CKX (Content is King/Robert F. X. Silleman) a company that also controls the Elvis estate (though, I can’t remember if Fuller regained control of the 19 companies from CKX).

Anyway, 19 (named after Fuller’s first big production hit, the song “19″ from 1985), has a bunch of divisions that do everything from touring to merchandising and more. 19E does the Idol show. 19M does the management (mostly Idols). 19R is a record label. Idols that sign contracts with Sony also sign them with 19R (look at any Idol albums you’ve purchased and the 19R logo will be there).

19M dropped Jordin. I don’t think 19R did. Jive certainly didn’t. Kelly, Clay and Fantasia left 19M.

ARISTA – you got it all wrong and you definitely blew it. Trying to make her into a teen pop star was so totally wrong for her. I knew that cd going to be a BIG flop. It isn’t Arista’s fault at all. She was signed to RCA.

  • Kirsten

The point is 19 is not the God of all that is music. Jordin does not need them to be successful nor does she need their approval.

No. I think that if 19M was all that and a bag of chips they’d have more customers other than Idols (and the Mr and Mrs. Posh Spice). 19M starts with customers that already have built in ability to get onto talk shows due to their Idol fame (until this season, I don’t see much difference between what Taylor/Kat got for promo compared to 19M clients). The only clear benefit to being with 19M is that they are more likely to feature you on the show (which is quite a considerable benefit, but the rates they are rumoured to charge their clients is supposed to be quite high for the biz).

Didn’t Jordin sign with Azoff? He’s good. She won’t be missing out in the promo.

The point is 19 is not the God of all that is music. Jordin does not need them to be successful nor does she need their approval. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s doing just fine and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s silly to act like she is just down in the doldrums and not having any success.

Did I say that? I was saying in the eyes of TPTB at Idol and 19E, they are only happy with mega multi-platinum success. *I* think Jordin is doing just fine. She not “mega” but she’s still a success. Just not Carrie Underwood level of success.

  • IdolFanatic

Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Jordin sign with Azoff? Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s good. She wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be missing out in the promo.

  • sma11ie

RCA/Arista/Jive/etc are all labels under the Sony umbrella.

19R is a record label. Idols that sign contracts with Sony also sign them with 19R

Thank you, Kirsten. I was hoping you’d chime in to clarify. Boy this is a confusing setup. I still don’t quite get the point of tacking 19R onto the contract when the Idols are signed to a Sony label, but I guess that’s 19 wanting their stamp on everything? Whatever, I guess there’s a lot about this industry I won’t get.

Other than Taylor Swift from what we can see so far, who IS selling multiplatinum these days? If that’s the threshold 19 is looking at for success they may want to start lowering their standards. I find it interesting to see “the Mr. and Mrs. Posh Spice” when David Beckham worldwide is one of the most recognizable figures ever. That America doesn’t recognize him as such may be one of our biggest problems (it’s not our sport so it doesn’t matter/exist).

  • weareallinnocent

Tiptoe-ing into the thread…and after only reading mj’s most recent post…

I’m no McPhee fan, and I’m not a diehard Idol fan or even total follower for that matter. With that disclaimer, Katherine impressed me as someone who might be trying too hard — to be whatever she’s “supposed” to be. IMO, she should just be who she is, granted, she may not be certain who that is. But, she probably should figure that out. Maybe signing with Verve signals that she has. If so, I’m really happy for her. She’s a talented girl.

  • snuffles

If thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the threshold 19 is looking at for success they may want to start lowering their standards.

I agree. But I haven’t seen any signs that 19E has bought a clue. It’s clear to me that they really don’t like to put in too much effort into their clients. As far as Idol is concerned, they seem to think that the show should do the bulk of the work. Post show, they get lazy and expect the Idols to sink or swim.

  • Kirsten

    A) I’m not American so you shouldn’t blame Americans for my post.

    B) I very well know who David Beckham is. On the other hand, I would have trouble picking Posh Spice out of a line-up. Does that woman even have a name?

    C) Fuller is the creator of the Spice Girls, so I’m betting the reason he managed to get the Beckhams as clients is more to do with his previous relationship with Posh than anything to do with Beckham. The reason I used “Mr. and Mrs. Posh Spice” is to illustrate this.

    D) I think that “Mr. and Mrs. Posh Spice” sounds funnier.

    E) If you think that Americans don’t know who Beckham is, I wouldn’t blame their disinterest in football. I would blame Fuller and 19M. It’s their job to make David Beckham a household name and this is a prime example of how they may not be all that great. “Bend it Like Beckham” probably managed to do more than 19M ever managed to do.

  • gingerly

I think 19E puts efforts into clients that give them a return. I can’t see that they’ve lacked on effort where David Cook is concerned. Maybe I’m wrong but I see effort and I see return. I seriously doubt Daughtry would complain about their efforts…maybe I’m wrong. If you think somebody (anybody) isn’t a star because of their efforts or lack thereof, well just remember that you can lead a horse to water…

Close, but not quite. RCA/Arista/Jive/etc are all labels under the Sony umbrella. BMG sold out to Sony last year. 19E is a television production company. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s part of the 19 family under the control of CKX (Content is King/Robert F. X. Silleman) a company that also controls the Elvis estate (though, I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember if Fuller regained control of the 19 companies from CKX).

Anyway, 19 (named after Fullerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first big production hit, the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“19à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³ from 1985), has a bunch of divisions that do everything from touring to merchandising and more. 19E does the Idol show. 19M does the management (mostly Idols). 19R is a record label. Idols that sign contracts with Sony also sign them with 19R (look at any Idol albums youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve purchased and the 19R logo will be there).

Hmmm… what I had been led to understand (and it’s been a little while, so it may have changed… or I may have been told incorrectly) was that 19R was not a record label in any sense of the word, but really more of a “holding company.” From what I understood, according to the Idols contracts, 19R owns all the masters and gets their revenue from licensing those. The label (whichever imprint it is) still does all the PP&D, and still has a contract for x number of albums with the artist, and generally fulfills all the functions of a label (except not owning the masters).

Anyway, I didn’t think 19 really did anything very label-y with the exception of licensing the masters to Sony. As a whole though, I generally tend to find 19E’s deals to be unconventional and a bit convoluted, so who who knows what the deal really is (besides, apparently, you Kristen :smile_wp: )

And, last I heard, CKX still owns 19, but Fuller is negotiating to buy it back.

Well, that’s good for her. I’m not a fan but this is good news for her fans so congrats! :)

I actually think that if you’re from Canada (and I’ve no clue where anybody is from, nor do I really care) you have less credibility in the football/soccer area than somebody from the U.S. At least we compete. Canada is fairly worthless unless on skates, and then of course you rock. I also don’t see anybody putting Victoria in front of David otherwise, unless you’ve seen the totally awesome Ali G interview on YouTube, and then you will know she’s so much more than her man. I guess I just don’t give people here credit to understand that. I’m sure it’s my problem and not yours.

Wow this is interesting. A thread about the Katharine always generates a lot of interest! What I am most happy about is this is a label of true quality music. It is a label that has musicians who are masters at their craft. Not creations like so much popular music. I’m not saying that Kat is there yet but it is obvious that the Executives at Verve and Universal see something really special in her. They see potential to be a true “artist” in every sense of that word.

Bravo Katharine you have done something no one else has ever done from Idol.

Bravo Katharine you have done something no one else has ever done from Idol.

You mean with House Bunny, right? :unsure_tb:

  • uplink2

No she is the first Idol ever to be dropped by a Major label and re-sign with another Major label. Everyone else has either gone Indy or just gone.

  • wonderwhy

Katherine looks like a beautiful jazz chanteuse in the picture. Congratulations to her for getting signed with Verve! I think it’s a nice reward for her perseverence in the business, and good luck to her.

Personnally, I would never label an entire nation “fairly worthless”. Especially, if I was doing it an attempt to try to slam somebody while admitting I don’t even know if that person is from that country. That’s just not circket, IMO. And nobody was even claiming to be good at football/soccer. Even if Canadians, in general, don’t play the game all that well, isn’t it possible that at least one of them might watch it and know who Beckham is?

Seriously, the dude is way more famous than his wife. That’s where the attempt at humour lies.

I merely pointed out that I was not American because I didn’t think that it was fair to generalize about Americans because of what I posted. That’s hardly slamming anybody. It was actually an attempt at defending. I did not mean to drag any other nationalities into the fray.

I think 19E puts efforts into clients that give them a return. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see that theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve lacked on effort where David Cook is concerned.

Once again, 19E runs the show, American Idol. 19M is David Cook’s management firm.

And Beckham is getting lots of press for playing for Milan. Just not in the US (and probably not because of 19M’s efforts). So, I think he is putting in some effort.

I’m not sure what role 19R actually has in making the album. I wouldn’t be surprised if you are completely right. I’ve never heard of 19R playing any kind of role in the recording or promoting process. It all seems to be up to BNA/Arista/RCA/Jive/whomever. But, I’m pretty sure the reason 19R’s name is on attached to Idol records because 19 is somehow getting a cut of something.

As an American, I would like to state for the record that Canada is awesome. And, really, really clean.

Also – I don’t know any American’s who don’t know who David Beckham is – regardless of whether or not they’re soccer fans. Kirsten made a joke (apparently a dangerous thing these days). I don’t think she was trying to imply anything about American’s in general or even the Posh Spice’s for that matter.

Oh, and did someone call Kat sophisiticated? With that little girl giggle? Every time I’ve seen that girl I’ve thought she acted like a middle schooler. I don’t think the reason her CD tanked has anything to do with her excessive maturity or the fact that she married a guy old enough to be her dad.

  • Kirsten

Seriously. The only person I know of who doesn’t know who he is is a somebody who just turned 3 and isn’t allowed to watch TV (and does not yet read newspapers)

Thank you. I was not attempting to generalize about Americans at all.

  • Grammie Kari

IMO, Kat still remains the most beautiful contestant to appear on AI.

Jordin seems very sincere and sweet. She wasn’t my choice, but it is good to see the Idols doing something good with their lives.

  • J.S.G.

OK, who here has actually listened to Kat’s CD? Hold up your hands. That’s what I thought.

I don’t it is that bad, certainly not up to her potential, but she is still fairly young.

Sure 375,000 units sucks, but it is more than I expected given the timing and Kat’s lack of musical identity.

So I don’t think the CD ‘tanked.’ Maybe ‘bucketed’ is a better word. Or ‘pailed,’ a pail being smaller version of a tank.
Let’s just say sales of Kat’s first CD paled in comparison to other AI artists.

  • Lu

Good luck to Kat. Girl can sang for sure.

Sure 375,000 units sucks, but it is more than I expected given the timing and Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lack of musical identity.

Boy I know of someone who’d have loved to have sold 375K… yoohoo Connie… I’m talkin to you!

I listened to it, and thought it was super-generic rhythm/pop fluff. I wasn’t surprised when it failed to burn up the charts, exactly.

  • weelassie

Kat is a pretty girl and she doesn’t need to use gimmicks like her shoulder strap falling down and showing tons of cleavage to sell her music. If she does, then she is in the wrong business. I would love to see her wearing something that looks sexy without screaming I’m sexy, look at my chest. Maybe I’m old fashioned but showing less skin sometimes generates more interest. Hope the new label works for her.

  • Fender

    Gotcha :thumbup_tb:

Yeah, I’m almost positive 19R owns the masters. Which is a sweet deal for them, but a really crappy one for everyone who signs with them. Damn, those Idol deals are even more onerous than I think people understand. If they were any worse they’d be in Lou Pearlman territory.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

    LOL, Lu.

I agree we all know who the Beckhams are. Please. And I’ll say soccer. Yes. I will. I used to have season tickets to the Fire before they moved to the burbs.

I didn’t enjoy Katharine on the show. I didn’t like the snippets I heard of her first album. But this deal is a major coup for her. So, I’ll reserve judgment until I hear her songs.

  • sillypraguer

I’m happy for her! Hope she records some great jazz. That’s what I enjoyed from her on the show.

  • xoxoyc

Well I of course am very happy about this announcement. Katharine’s voice is perfect for this genre and I hope she does very well. I can’t wait to hear her new music!

And she will never sells the millions like Carrie, Kelly, etc but I think she can gain respect and a lifelong career if she puts out a good quality album.

  • beachn

Katharine is so gorgeous. I don’t understand why she doesn’t go straight
to the big screen. Singing should be a side line for her, like it is for Scarlett
Johansson. Anyone who looks that great should go for the big Star as an
    actress.

Jazz may serve her well. I hope so – wishing her the best !!

  • dee

There’s nothing like some tidbits about Kat to get those post numbers up! Man, that girl sure generates some intense feelings! :-)

Good luck to her with Verve. IMO, that label seems right up her song styling alley. I hope good things come of their relationship.

And btw, Posh Spice’s first name is Victoria and she is devoted to her husband and children…she also loves posing for pictures in gorgeous clothes(I wouldn’t mind doing that myself)…and apparently, she’s not very fond of eating.
