Katharine McPhee Set To Star in Feature Film “Depravity”

With the Smash TV series behind her, Katharine McPhee is moving on to her next project. The American Idol season 5 runner up is set to star in a feature film titled Depravity, a thriller directed by Paul Tamasy and a script by Dennis Lehane.

The plot involves a group of roommates who accidentally kill an innocent man they believed was a thrill killer. According to Deadline, which is reporting the news exclusively “It sends the group into a world unhinged from any moral compass, one in which they may be forced to confront not only the evil around them but the evil within them as well.”

Katharine will play a twentysomething the group tries to scapegoat.

I hope that Kat takes some acting lessons before filming starts.

    What no sharks?

  • HermeticallySealed

How do you think they get rid of the body?

  • curly_yenta

Who is this girl paying off to be able to continue in this business? Did she even bother to take any acting lessons after Smash? #another_disaster

Doesn’t sound like she’s going to be eaten by fish in this one. Maybe buried alive or thrown from a building? Things are improving!

Can’t find if she’s the lead or not. Just says “starring.” If she’s the lead her life expectancy improves.

I am astonished someone else has hired her to act again. She cannot act. She can sing….why not go with your strengths? I just don’t get it.

  • HermeticallySealed

So . . . has anyone checked local petting zoos for missing goats yet?

  • Incipit

Dennis Lehane is an interesting writer in a genre that I like to read – not my favorite, but he likes to pose tough questions for his characters to deal with. I think movies made from his books depend a great deal on the director’s interpretation. I have never seen Kat act at the level that interpretation would require – hmm.

Paul Tamasy is a screenwriter, I thought — looking to find what he has directed in the past.

  • MV007

I dont know who is more assertive in expressing their feelings about McPhee. Her fans? Or her haters?

  • bridgette12

Kat has great management. I don’t care what she do or how many times she fail at acting or singing, she lands on her feet. Who in their right mind, would hire her to star in a feature film? I wouldn’t hire her for a thirty second commercial, let alone a movie. Did these people even look at Smash to see just how bad she is as an actress?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Steven Spielberg is a big supporter of Kat, so that could be why Kat is landing on her feet.

  • bridgette12

I am not a hater, I am someone who’s amazed that someone of Kat’s talent level, keep getting all of these opportunities.

  • Lovesyesha

Looks like Kat’s got some haters…I’m just going to say congrats and move on.

  • 1DFans.org

You people are hags. Katharine McPhee is a great actress, but of course you can’t be happy for her. Pigs.

  • bridgette12

If he likes her, maybe it’s time to tell her that possibly acting is not her future.

  • http://www.facebook.com/beaugard.stevens Beaugard Stevens

She can’t act. She proved that with “Smash”

  • bridgette12

I don’t know in what alternate reality Kat is a great actress, but in this dimension, she pretty much sucks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/beaugard.stevens Beaugard Stevens

I agree, I don’t get it, she is one of the major reasons I could not watch anymore of it- she’s a terrible actress. And there doesn’t even seem to be potential there for her to get any better.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Unfortunately, true. “Smash” was Kat’s big opportunity for a breakthrough, and I would have thought that she would have taken intensive acting lessons before that show. Or, maybe she did, and that was a good as she was going to get? lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Is that you, Kat? lol

  • curly_yenta

    Haha!

  • HermeticallySealed

I wouldn’t say never, but I seriously hope she considers classes if she plans on trying to go beyond the indy/SyFy level.

  • alt28023

I’m pretty sure Smash failed because it wasn’t mainstream enough. Not to say McPhee’s acting is any good, as I only have The House Bunny to judge her off of. She is quite the looker though, so…shes always got that going for her.

  • emme1000

Congrats Kat! Don’t listen to the haters…those who can’t do tear down those who can.

  • Kevin

For me, it didn’t matter whether Kat was a good or bad actress. Smash failed because of the bad storylines. So basically I blame it on the writers who couldn’t write better scripts and characters that would appeal to the general public.

  • fuzzywuzzy

True, the storylines were bad, but even with that, other cast members (Megan, Christian, Jack, others) managed to impress me with their acting and performing abilities, despite all of the other problems. Unfortunately, as one of the leads in the show, Kat’s poor acting was front and center.

    Reminder:

OVERINVESTED STANS. Calm down. Bitching and calling out commenters as “haters” will get you banned forever. GOT THAT?

  • HermeticallySealed

Really, Megan and Kat should have switched roles.

  • Incipit

Dennis Lehane in an interview with Collider.com about his latest book today says NO to this story –

Lehane: Okay, this is bizarre! I just heard of this today. I have no connection to this thing

Lehane: Oh, yeeaah . . . uh, no. No connection. Maybe it’s
Tim LaHaye? I don’t know. I don’t know who is writing this script, but
it’s not me. I’ve never even heard of this.

And his possible connection was the only thing that made this interesting to me. Good to know.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That was a big disconnect for me in the premise of the show – why anyone would choose Kat over Megan for the lead in “Bombshell”.

  • Connie Stamley

Congrat Kat. She’s a bright, beautiful talented young woman that has worked hard and deserves all the best. Really don’t get all these harsh criticism. Your guy won already.

  • thirdtime

I didn’t watch Kat in Smash, so I can’t say if she’s a good actress or not, but I did like her on Idol. I do know though, that you don’t need to be a good actress to star in a low budget horror film. My local Redbox is full of ridiculously bad horror movies with ridiculously bad actors in them. I doubt that she’ll have any problems getting roles like this even if she is a bad actress, because she’s so beautiful and has a few acting gigs under her belt now.

  • MV007

I’m not over invested. In fact I couldn’t care less about McPhee. But I see your point about calling out haters. I really wasn’t trying to call anyone out. I was making an observation. But I can see how my initial post could be perceived that way. For that I apologize.

  • jennyl2

Kat and Jack is the reason I watched Smash and I didn’t like her during her idol season at all. This is good news. Congrats Kat!

  • HermeticallySealed

Can’t speak of others, but my opinion of her skills is predicated entirely on her acting, not some hokey karaoke competition. And the fact is, she’s kind of flat as an actress.

  • songsungblue

I remember reading somewhere that her full time manager is…her husband. So maybe he has a vested interest. ;) Oh Kat, you are the Pia Zadora of the decade! She really runs the emotional gamut from A to B when she acts. Which is to say, she is quite wooden. But good luck to her! Her career is utterly mysterious – who else has had so very many chances?

  • songsungblue

That was the most WTF moment in television.

  • Liteasy

I think it’s probably who her parents are that has helped her to get roles. Her daddy works(ed) at FOX and her mother and sister are vocal coaches for Idol. So they’re well know in Hollywood town, and probably have some pull to get her these roles.

  • http://twitter.com/AwesomeWillis Willis White

I liked Smash. The storylines were cheesy and I kinda found that part of the charm. The ratings were bad, but I think they still should have stayed with the Monday slot. The dating show flopped anyways. Smash was pricey. If they lost the NYC locations and a few expensive “names” could there be a 3rd season? There’s a potential franchise in the name.

Smash had a loyal following but it wasn’t enough. For me, the music was the main drawing factor. That’s why I don’t mind Kat being a part of the show. There’s a lot of great music on the soundtrack.

  • Wfish88

Her acting was not good on SMASH, but her looks are what prob gets here the job. Give her alot of credit to keep working, altho SMASH failed, I’m sure it only helped her. She was off the map before SMASH/Shark Night

  • Pietro Matos

hahaha it seems like its a b movie. Love Katharine she’s still haven’t developed greatly as an actress and this probably wont be her breakout moment either but i think she has potential, she needs a good director and a good script like most in the business, not everybody starts with a bang as JHud. Kat is not the worst actress in the business either, so i don’t get why so much hatred. She seems to be a sweet girl in real life too, maybe some still have a grudge because of idol not sure why. But if you don’t like her, there’s no need watch the movie or anything associated with her.Plain simple like that, no need to bash the girl there are lots of bad actresses right now in Hollywood so it’s not like the standards are too high lol. Well, obviously i prefer listening to her gorgeous voice but i’m happy she’s active and working hard to get somewhere.

  • Jonins

She is boring and a terrible actress. And still get parts. Proof that in Hollywood, no matter how bad you act or sing, when you have connections, you will still be in demand.

  • vamp111

Kat definitely has “movie star looks.” She is gorgeous. Good luck to her!

  • breakdown

I’m sorry but Kat is just a vapid performer and actress.

  • Lovesyesha

Well at least she is an amazing singer! More than you can say for many in Hollywood.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“But I see your point about calling out haters. I really wasn’t trying to call anyone out. I was making an observation. But I can see how my initial post could be perceived that way. ”

But that’s the problem. It’s not a matter of erroneous “perception” by others, but your misguided perception in regarding those with criticisms as ‘haters”.

  • curly_yenta

A “B” movie plot for a “B” pseudo actress. And so it goes…..

  • curly_yenta

That is a matter of opinion. She’s the queen of screech.

sure is funny that Katharine brings out ALL THE HAGS cough MJ cough when there is something about Katharine

and don’t worry I will never visit your site again

  • Pietro Matos

I agree with you. Even a vet like Angelica Huston was awful on smash. Her character was completely one dimensional but we all know she can act if she’s given the right script and director. I’m proud of Kat because she’s trying and chasing her dream, She’s not there yet but i can see she’s a hard worker. Plus she’s a fine singer and performer.

  • Dalki

Horrible actress. Who in their right mind would pay to see this?
