Katharine McPhee Cast in CBS Pilot “Scorpion”

American Idol alum, and Smash star, Katharine McPhee has been cast in a drama pilot, Scorpion, for CBS, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Based on the life of Walter O’Brien, the drama revolves around Walter (Body of Proof’s Elyes Gabel) an eccentric genius and his international network of super-geniuses who form the last line of defense against the complex threats of the modern age.

McPhee will play Paige, a working-class hero and diner waitress who understands geniuses who becomes a nanny of sorts and translator for Walter’s super team of socially misunderstood masterminds.

Katharine starred for 2 seasons in Smash for NBC and is currently has a feature, Depravity, in the works.

No wonder Kat’s PR has been busy with damage control lately, leaking stories that she’s back with her husband, Nick Cokas in the wake of a cheating scandal a few months back.

Of course, just because a pilot is ordered, does not mean the series will hit the airwaves. CBS has to like what they see before deciding to give the series a green light.

Go Kat Go! Hope she gets a chance to be back on TV!!

  • MichaelG

I don’t understand how she keeps getting cast for these series/dramas/pilots.

  • Dakota

how does she keep getting cast?

  • mumumu

should be pretty easy to guess

  • Henrique Mendes

well she auditions i am guessing?

  • Sassycatz

She’s an adequate actress, good looking, with connections.

  • usedtobelucy

A drama? Well, that ought to be …. highly mediocre.

Makes me feel bad for all the excellent actors out there who don’t get these parts because Kat’s connections and looks are blinding somebody to the fact that she’s a crap actor. …. I used to hope that she would improve. But it’s been eight or nine years now — plus the time before Idol when she was apparently training for this career — and now I just think that she’s too fundamentally a dim bulb to actually learn how to act well. I’m not convinced that she’s even ever *tried* very hard to learn.

And I hate to break it to them, but crap actors often are bad for the chances of your tv show. No matter how pretty and sexy they are. …. Depends on the show, of course. Maybe Scorpion will turn out to be the Baywatch of the eccentric, world-saving geniuses genre.

Good grief — this sounds like a “serious” version of the Big Bang Theory with Kat in the Penny role.

  • Bankston

Great for Katharine! She is definitely someone with “movie star” looks.

  • hello

    by auditioning?

  • hello

the entire business is based on people in the right positions believing in you. so the right people believe she’ll do a good job.

  • Corrine43180

    Yay Kat!!!!

  • MichaelG

Oh, sure. I guess they must not care about acting ability and overall talent. Yeah…I see. Lol…

  • Tinawina

LOL! To be fair, Penny on TBBT is less “waitress who understands geniuses” and more “girl next door who tolerates weirdos”. She never understands what any of them are talking about. Heh.

This sounds like a crime procedural with a twist to me. Like twelve hundred other shows. Sigh.

  • Porfivor Nixon

They do know she can’t act, right?

  • HermeticallySealed

Shame she doesn’t have the acting part to go with it. But, guess she wouldn’t be the only one.

  • HermeticallySealed

Somewhere, there is a field of sacrificial goats which answer that question.

  • emme1000

Good for her for getting a pilot. I hope it is good enough to get picked up.

  • mshepnj

    Katherine has a great agent.

  • schmanda

I’m noting with not a small amount of amusement that she wasn’t cast as one of the super-geniuses.

  • Larc

Getting cast in a pilot is one thing. Realizing success because that pilot is picked up by the network is something else altogether. Kat may not be depriving anybody of more than a very temporary job.

  • iluvai

I think she is lovely. Good for her and I hope it’s a good show.

  • iluvai

I thought she was cute in House Bunny. She’s just too pretty, normal and non-trashy for regular tv, perhaps.

  • iluvai

I wish her the best of luck. :) Sometimes pretty girls get all the criticism!!!

  • HermeticallySealed

“Too pretty” for regular tv? Is there a sudden dearth of pretty people on t.v.? And I am sorry, no matter how nicely one tries to wrap it up, making out with a married man in public IS the very definition of trashy behavior.

Seriously, there are plenty of pretty, non-adulterating actors on t.v.. Even then, being pretty or normal hardly make up for flat acting in an acting career.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    ….and amazing connections! lol

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

“Regular TV” requires acting skills to create a character from week to week, in a variety of situations. No director has yet figured out how to get that performance from McPhee consistently.

  • fuzzywuzzy

When I learned that Steven Spielberg was a big supporter of Kat’s, and that he wanted to fire Megan Hilty, I seriously questioned his judgement. lol

  • MN Sue

Maybe the part calls for a beautiful young actress with 1 dimensional acting abilities. Wouldn’t be the first time.

  • nycguy

I wish her luck. I’m still upset Smash didn’t make it while Glee is still burning our retinas.

  • carola99

I agree. I wish Smash would still be on instead of Glee.
Smash had his faults of course, but it also had so much more potential.

  • iluvai

I meant that she is not overly made-up and plastic looking. I don’t know anything about her extracurricular activities, but what you describe is probably not considered polite behavior. Still, she strikes me as a nice woman. I wish her the best.

  • breakdown

Who is her champion? How many chances is she going to be given to become a star, in spite of her limited talent?
