Michael Johns and Katharine McPhee both appear on David Foster’s 2 disc CD/DVD Hit Man: David Foster and Friends due to drop tomorrow 11/11.

Michael Johns sings two numbers on the disc, “Man in Motion (St. Elmos Fire)” and “She’s a Beauty” both on the DVD portion of the disc.   I’ve got clips!   I’ll bet I haven’t heard “Man in Motion” in about 20 years.   David Foster produced it, so that’s reason enough to drag it out again.  Ãƒâ€š   Also produced by David Foster?   “She’s a Beauty” by the Tubes.   The eighties are back!   Check the clips below. Michael does a nice job with the, uh, classic material.

“Man in Motion” (about a minute long)

Katharine McPhee’s performances appear on both the CD and DVD discs.   She sings “Somewhere” and performs a duet with Andrea Bocelli.   You can watch them perform the lovely “Prayer” at the Amazon page HERE.

He sounds nice vocally, but he should never, NEVER sing this type of material again. LOL. Man talk about dated. He sounds tres corny, it plays into everything that is hammy about Michael. Ugh. Please stick to the bluesy/soul rockish vibe dude.

And always sing accompanied by a nice video, because the watching is the best part of the experience. Yummy Hot Aussie. Mmmm. LOL.

  • mcm

Thanks SO much MJ! You even scooped MJO this time. lol
    He sounds AMAZING!!!

Awesome Michael, You sound wonderful!! Michael can sing anything and I mean Anything. Good Job babe love it. :clap_tb:

  • t2

Yummy Michael — even without the video — the man is just plain yummy.

Will everyone hate me if I say that I think Kat sounds exceptional with Bocelli. She really should let David Foster guide her music career — this type of music suits her so well.

  • woo

I agree with tinawina, I’m a big fan of Michael but that 80′s pop music style doesn’t suit him at all. Its a good thing that from everything I’ve heard it looks like his album is gonna be blues/rock.

I cant wait for Michael John’s album. I am expecting big things from him

I don’t know much about David Foster’s music, but I got the impression he was given those songs to perform. If so, doesn’t surprise me he was given these, because Foster had his own little vision of who Michael should be.

But yes, he does sound great vocally. Can’t wait to get the DVD and watch his performances!

When everyone stood up after ‘The Prayer,’ they were all just getting ready to leave weren’t they? It is not like THAT was a virtuoso vocal performance..

  • proudmom

From the clips, vocally, Michael sounds good, but his versions sound like carbon copies of the originals. No new takes on the songs. (And if they sound the same, why should we care or buy them?) Michael’s voice is nice, but he doesn’t sound unique here. It could be darn near any artist singing these.

I do hope that you were not being serious there. editing rude remarks. Katharine’s voice sounds fantastic here. Her connection with Bocelli is real and it shines very clearly throughout this performance. I can’t wait to hear the complete version of Somewhere. That is one of my favorite songs of all time and to hear her sing it is something I am getting very excited about especially hearing how great she was sounding that evening. Josh Grobin and Michael Buble have said that David Foster brings out the best in their voices and he certainly does the same with Katharine.

edit: Don’t comment on how others post here. Stick to your own opinion. Bravo David, Andrea and Kat! A great great performance! And congrats to Michael Johns. David will bring out the best in you too!

edit: I think you need to read the guidelines again.

Michael, step away from the David Foster.

Maybe this isn’t the type of material that Michael will do going forward, as it was a celebration of DF’s hit songs, but the prospect of being involved in a project that will be seen by millions on PBS and sell quite a few copies, is a great positive thing for him to be involved in. The exposure is probably second to only an Idol appearance.

Not a big Kat fan but do think she sings very well, especially with Bocelli. David Fosters music is the kind Kat does great IMO. The kind on her AI album, not so good. I like her better doing duets as she seems to connect better when she has someone else with her. Michael needs all the exposure he can get. I’m sure he sang the songs the way David wanted them sang after all it was his party. I’m anxious to see what’s on his CD as I’m a big fan.

I think Kat’s voice is beautiful. I remember Michael doing
David Foster and friends when the idols were on Larry King Live.
I love Michael’s voice, and I’m excited he will be seen and
heard by so many people outside of AI.

  • Fran

Thanks mj for putting up those appetizers. Now I’ll have the song ‘Man In Motion’ in my head the whole day. He sounded great but the best part of the song actually comes after this one minute mark when Michael’s voice soared.

And I have no problem with Michael working with DF. He sang Aint No Sunshine on one of those EW shows (I am not sure which without checking) with DF on the piano doing an impromptu arrangement and that was very entertaining if not too short.

I think Michael has one of those voices that can cut through any genres given the right song, inspiration and guidance. I am happy for him to choose his own route for now. I just hope he will not postpone releasing his own music any more than necessary seeing so many of us are hanging out for his music.

I agree with tinawina et al. Michael sounds fine but this “interpretation” seems very irrelevant to me. A sure way to stay on the ‘B’, ‘C’ or ‘D’ track of the music biz. If he wants to be pegged as a karaoke wedding-type singer, its great. But I doubt that this is his ambition. I don’t think this was a very smart move for him to make right out of the gate of the AI tour.

  • maggiemay

michael did a really great job and i love him but kat is another league here. she sounds AMAZING :O i really wanna hear the full version of “Somewhere” now

  • bean99

Loved the clips, Mj. I have a feeling that Michael did the songs that David wanted to and were likely produced the way DF wanted him to perform them. I love them but I’m an 80′s music gal. :cool2_tb:

I bought Kat’s 2 tracks last night. I couldn’t wait for my DVD/CD package to arrive in the mail. She sounds amazing on them. I’m really hoping she performs Somewhere with David when they appear together on The View next week.

She has done some incredible work this year. Virtually an entire new CD of new material and covers. It has shown incredible growth and control on her part. I am really very excited to hear the new CD she and David along with other great producers are getting ready for this spring. Each of the rumored Major labels she is reportedly signed with or about to announce her signing with, will be a much better place for her than RCA was.

David Foster was so dismissive of this year’s idols when he appeared on the Today show. He so arrogantly said (something like)there was no talent in Season 7 that was the level of previous idols. I believe he said that there’s “no Clay Aiken.”

If he felt that way fine, but the way he said it. It was so condescending. His tone was vitriolic…very mean…and I remember Meredith Viera’s face. It was like “what? what’s your problem?” Shortly after that, it was announced that Clay was donating to make David Foster’s nephew and it was like Foster didn’t want us to love DC…but it was too late, we already did. So all Foster did was look small…very, very small.

Gonna take more than the recording of his fossil hits to make me forget that.

One of the things I like about David is he speaks his mind. If he thinks a performer misses a note, he will tell them. If he doesn’t like a singer, he will say it. When he was on the View 2 years back and Elizabeth said she wanted to talk about Taylor, he said “I don’t”. He said he thought America got it wrong and Kat should have won. That she was the stand out performer. And he has been true to that with all the work he does with her. Personally I prefer a guy who tells you like it is. That’s why Simon is my favorite judge. I may not agree with him all the time but I know where he stands. David found nothing special in Season 7 and he said his opinion. But he has done some stuff with MJ so he must see something in him.

And personally I happen to agree with him about Season 7 though maybe not to that extent. No one really stood out as something really special to me. Good? yes but special and unique? No.

Hey David has a huge ego but he is a great talent and I will always respect a man who tells you the way it is with no BS.
