UPDATE: Jason tells Billboard Magazine that he’s signed to Atlantic Records and that he hopes to get a record out by summertime. Check the video interview after the jump.

Kara DioGuardi spills the beans in a new video she just put up on her You Tube page.

After the jump, check out Jason, in a Los Angeles studio working with Kara and producer John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Switchfoot) on a song Jason and Kara wrote together called “Miles Away.”

Further proof that good things are coming Jason’s way: In his latest blog, Season 6′s Chris Sligh–in Los Angeles recently for songwriting sessions–talks about meeting Jason for dinner recently and hints at big things to come:

I called Jason Castro to say hello and found out he’s living in the L.A. area now working on writing his album. I won’t steal his thunder but congrats to Jason on his success… He’s writing like crazy and is excited about what’s happening for his career. Again, there’s not much else I can say at this point, nor should I say…but know that Jason is doing great!

So, maybe those rumors about a record deal are true…

Oh- yay we now have a – oh what is that word – to save the page like we all used to do last year??, I am so happy for Jason

Oh thats the word I was looking for, a crack thread, thanks Jersey – ha

  • jersey

This news makes me so happy. Can’t wait for Jason music! It’s been a while since we’ve had a Jason crack thread.

  • mandalay

What about the Billboard video in the headlines thread where he says he has a new home at Atlantic? Doesn’t that confirm the record deal?

  • Dr. Tracey

    Cool!
I can’t wait to hear what Jason’s been recording, hopefully they don’t wait too long to release, i’m not a huge fan of Atlantic so if it is them I hope they do right by him.

  • houstonrufus

That’s awesome. I really like Jason and hope he has great success.

  • primeminister

FINALLY. someone spills (just a little) YAYAYAYAYAY!

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Oh that was a nice post from Chris, he seems like the nicest guy and I bet that was pretty cool for Danny – ya know he was getting some insight that will help with his time on Idol – though Jason and Chris were not as well received by TPTB as he has been, so far.

  • brie200

Yay! So happy. I also like to hear the little bit of Jason’s recorded voice playing in the background.

I really think Atlantic is a good fit for him. They have a nice stable of artists and singer/songwriter types. Now we just need an official annoucement from Atlantic, though I don’t think we are getting that on Good Friday.

  • KrazeeK120

Aw yay, some great news about my favorite Season 7 finalist. Evidently, Jason is a package artist!! I have 3 words for you: Way to go Jason!!!

  • brie200

    Aw, you’re using Kara math.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

What about the Billboard video in the headlines thread where he says he has a new home at Atlantic? Doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that confirm the record deal?

That wasn’t posted earlier when I started writing this post. I updated with the latest news.

  • mandalay

Okay cool. Thanks mj, as always.

  • GeminiDolly

Thats great. Glad Atlantic is giving him the chance.

  • kerfuffle

Oh Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! That’s most awesome news, indeed. Jason was my favorite last season (followed by Brooke, then Cook). I’m so happy. LOL @ the “Kara Math”, KrazeeK120.

Per sumidol‘s instructions: Must save “Crack Thread”.

  • sma11ie

Jason fans, any word on what his album’s timeline is? I know we have Brooke in June, and isn’t MJ somewhere around then as well? I’m assuming Jason has been working on writing and his album this whole time, so I can’t imagine it’ll take a super-long time for it to be ready.

  • http://www.myspace.com/blakelewisfansunite Cindy

    yay! Good for Jason! :D

  • cacity87

YAAAY!! I am so happy for Jason!! My Season 7 favorite, for sure!

Also…Jason still cracks me up in the silliest goofiest way. LOVE that guy! :)
Can’t wait to hear his album!

  • Keel

Congrats to Jason! That’s great and I hope it’s confirmed soon AND that he releases soon.

Wow, that makes four S7 contestants with major label releases, right? (Michael Johns was indie produced, but he got a disty deal via Sony (IIRC) right?)

Also, we know Brooke has an album coming out, but don’t know yet whether it’s with a mini-major (Sanctuary Records), a major or something else. Sweet!

ETA: Whoops. It’s actually really five, but I’m trying not to think about how shabbily and carelessly Arista Nashville treated Kristy Lee Cook.

ETAA: Didn’t we also hear that Chikizie might have something in the works with Universal? I wonder what Syesha and Carly are up to.

  • oceana

That’s exciting! Jason was my favorite after David Cook last year. I love the kind of music he grooves to, and I know I’ll love anything he puts out, as long as it doesn’t have that intrusive mechanical drum beat that drowns out everything else. Please don’t do that to Jason’s music. Let it be mellow.

  • brie200

Timeline, other than summer there hasn’t been anything more than that. The only thing Jason said semi recently that he was pretty much writing/recording every day this month.

  • background_noise

Congratulations to Jason! He was the only reason I tuned in to S7. Stopped watching once he left. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what Jason is gonna do. Good news (on this Good Friday).

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

So it is for sure, for sure, so they did Carolina Liar – well I really like Carolina Liar – so thats a good thing and they have been getting a lot of play lately. I hope they do good by Jason, he so deserves it.

    Krazeek you are so funny

  • primeminister

    haha, KK- package artist FTW!
    *monkeyclap**monkeyclap**monkeyclap**monkeyclap*
haha, can you tell I’m really excited about this?
I’m even capable of mustering up some love for Kara now, heh.

  • pj

Yay! I feel bad that I was letting the naysayers get to me regarding Jason. This is awesome news.

I guess the naysayers can be as wrong as the cheerleaders. :-)

Did he say he’s working with … err, Pete Ganbarg? *chuckle*

  • primeminister

Yay! I feel bad that I was letting the naysayers get to me regarding Jason. This is awesome news.

Well, you weren’t the only one. I was starting to get annoyed at Jason for keeping everything so quiet; I even thought he was leading us on, heh.

  • CathyMK

Congratulatios, Jason! This is exciting news! I love it that he’s on the same label as carolina Liar and Paolo Nutini, as Sasha pointed out in the other thread. I’ve been noticing for a while now that Carolina Liar in particular has had absolutely fantastic support from their label as they’ve slowly grown over the past year. Let’s hope Jason gets the same treatment- he definitely deserves it. And when is that single finally going to be released! :clap_tb:

  • snuffles

    Congratulations Jason! Well deserved!

  • serenade

Congrats to Jason. This is awesome news. :)

  • idolbeat

Yay Jason! Can’t Wait! Most exciting news in a long time!
    Go Kara too!

  • Layla

Great for Jason. He gave a couple of “moment” performances last year so I think there is a LOT of potential there.

  • LovelyLady

Absolutely wonderful news! Congrats to Jason!! Looking soooo forward to the CD. So happy!! *clappity clappity*

  • SpenserJ

Yay! I feel bad that I was letting the naysayers get to me regarding Jason. This is awesome news.

LOL, and I feel bad for BEING one of the naysayers. I really never thought this would happen. Good for Jason. I’m a fan, so I’m really hoping that Jason’s CD actually contains good material that I’ll want to buy.

  • justantonio

finally they spill the beans!!..ive been listening and watching to all his new material since he has been off idol…the album is going to be amazing…hit song after hit song….this means he will finally tour and hopefully comes here or at least close enough for me to drive …fantastic news…congrats jason

  • May

Yay! That’s such great news. Jason had some of the loveliest studio versions last year. Can’t wait to hear his album.

  • brie200

The record label stuff aside, my actual favorite part of that Billboard interview is his “Good luck…sucker” aimed at his brother.

  • amy123

I wonder what Syesha and Carly are up to.

I can’t speak for Syesha, but Carly also did an interview with Billboard and she talked about her album, which she says is almost finished. We are hoping to hear some news/updates on her release date soon. Here’s the video of her Billboard interview :

Jason’s idol songs are the only things I ever bought from Itunes. I’ll look forward to checking this out. Hope it’s good. His will be the only other Idol CD I’ve bought other than taylor’s.

Great, great news for Jason!!!! I love him! Can’t wait for his cd!!!

All good things come to fans who wait..or something like that. I can’t watch the videos at work, but I sure can read the good news! Good for you, Jason! I’m one hoppy, hoppy girl!

Jason always makes me smile! He’s such a lovable goofball with a heart of gold. And I love his unique sound. I’m so happy for the good news! Finally!

Jason is my favorite from S7 and Adam is my favorite this season. Both so different in many ways, but each of their music affects my soul and makes me warm and happy inside!

    Did he say heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s working with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ err, Pete Ganbarg? *chuckle*

Yes, the Pete Ganbarg of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles/Vanilla Ice/Dora the Explorer fame. Heh. Mr. Ganbarg is the Exec V.P. of Atlantic. He also worked with Cookie, Blake, Kelly Clarkson, and Taylor Hicks, among other non-Idol greats like Jason Mraz.

At this year’s annual South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, Ganbarg gave this quote to the LA Times:

Expect labels to continue to take on more management duties, and vice-versa. Pete Ganbarg, executive VP/head of A&R at Atlantic Records, indicated that the Warner Music Group label would be employing in-house managers. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Atlantic tries to do broader rights deals,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he said.

Hopefully, this means that Jason’s family won’t be managing him any more.

  • brie200

Jason’s family was never managing him.

  • lavender1960

Yes I heard Chikezie signed a deal and Carly is close to having an album done, she is probably doing the shop the album after it is done indy route, it is riskier but you maintain more control, and if this is all confirmed, glad to see Jason had got his deal too.

I just figured Jason has a very specific musical direction in his mind and he strikes me as athe kind of fellow who would not just jump at the first opportunity, that he would really want a team behind him that he could vibe with because that is crucial to your overall success.

  • Tony

    lol well I’ll be damned.

  • weareallinnocent

    Yay for Jason! Can’t wait~

  • hypertwink

Yay for Jason! But step away from Kara “Package Artist” DioGuardi because she’s going to package you up with love.

  • CFIdolsfan

Oh that was a nice post from Chris, he seems like the nicest guy and I bet that was pretty cool for Danny – ya know he was getting some insight that will help with his time on Idol – though Jason and Chris were not as well received by TPTB as he has been, so far.

Congrats to Jason! He was my season 7 favorite. I trust that that he and Chris will be better received now, with Rascal Flatts singing Chris’ “Here Comes Goodbye.” :-D. It is also being performed on the Am. Stars tour. He has written with Phil Stacey as well, so awesome. Chris, btw, has been nominated for his song, “Empty Me,” for Song of the Year, if I remember correctly, for the Dove Awards, to be aired April 23 on the Gospel Music Channel. Jason should receive some respect, too, for having caused Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” to be downloaded so much, plus he sang the song for 2 independent Latino films.

  • abbysee

Go Jason! That season was speshul, that is for sure. The Kara connection notwithstanding, this is great news for him.

  • dante

I am so happy for Jason -can’t wait for his album – still the same ole laid back cute guy – lol

  • gingerly

I honestly hope Jason has some amazing writers. He’s not one of them, and I think, without amazing writers, he’s nothing. I’ve always been a fan. I’ve always thought he needs somebody to write for him to bring out the best in Jason. But I also think the beauty of American Idol is that you can fairly suck at songwriting (Jason) and have amazing songwriters at your feet. At least I hope so for Jason. He’d have gotten exactly nowhere on his own.

  • vagabond

Well I’ve been getting most of my Idol news from MJ’s this season since I’ve moved in with friends & my new housemates don’t like to watch it *GASP – HORRORS!!* – thank goodness for MJ!! :)

Haven’t posted much on here lately but this news about Jason gives me the warm fuzzies. I really adore this kid, love his voice, and am thrilled he’s gotten a recording deal. Good for him! And good for all his fans, too!! YAY!!! :)

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

“I trust that that he and Chris will be better received now, with Rascal Flatts singing Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Here ”

I hope so too – that show is just not right for some of them(but without it we might not have ever heard these two), but look at Chris now and Jason is just on his way.

  • hardkandy

oh yay! That’s so great for Jason! Congrats!

  • gabam

Darn, I wish I had signed on to the internet earlier today. Thanks for the news, MJ. I’m sooo excited for Jason and for us, his fans.

Congrats to Jason. I’m really looking forward to buying his CD and tickets to his tour. YAY!!!

  • itsalleternal

Congrats to Jason!! That has to be a huge honor!

From my count, of the top 8, only Syesha will not have an album out by the end of the summer.

  • sanggurl

This is fantastic news, but I wonder why there has been no official announcement from Jason’s camp, other than him saying he “found a home” at Atlantic. It looks like some sources are picking their words very carefully by saying that “finding a home” with a major record label doesn’t necessarily mean they are signed. To me, that doesn’t make any sense. If you are working with a label, and you expect to have a CD out soon, and you are working with major producers, wouldn’t that lead one to believe that that artist is signed to that label? I wish an official announcement would come out and clear up any speculation or misinformation. :wink_wp:

  • barefootgirl

This is exciting news. Way to GO Jason!

I honestly hope Jason has some amazing writers. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not one of them,

lol, much as I love Jason some of his lyrics make me cringe. I attribute it to youth plus limited life experience. When he is inspired, he has had moments – as in “So Fast”.

  • pj

lol, much as I love Jason some of his lyrics make me cringe. I attribute it to youth plus limited life experience. When he is inspired, he has had moments – as in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“So Fastà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Eh, Jason is young. His lyrics will improve with life experience. He’s still better than a LOT of stuff out there. “My Life Would Suck Without You” is a prime example. I am a tad skeered that he’s working with Kara. I mean, she wrote “Open Toes.”

  • Meg23

Yay! I’m so happy for Jason. He was my favorite last year!

  • 2dogs

I truly think Season 7 had the greatest depth of talent of any season by a big margin. So glad to being see so many of them making a go at this, including Jason. There is something special about him and I’m glad others saw it too (No, Randy Jackson, I am not talking about you).

Really hope he puts together a solid album.

  • cc1228

This is wonderful news. Jason was my favorite last season and I laughed at all the haters out there who said he wouldn’t go anywhere because I knew he would get some great opportunities. He’s got the looks, charm, and just overall appeal. This is huge for Jason and listening to his recent stuff, I think this album will be amazing. Another 4th runner up that will be HUGE!!

  • brie200

I don’t see how there is any misinformation out there. Jason was getting criticism before when info was put out there too early so now it’s understandable that he isn’t annoucing anything until it’s a done deal. Besides, isn’t it the labels that usually announce? If anything, Kara was the one who started spilling the beans and I get the gist she wasn’t supposed to be yapping her trap.

As for people saying that it doesn’t mean he’s signed, from what I’m seeing that is coming from the people who want to find something negative to say. Of course I don’t expect everyone to be fans of Jason, but there is a camp out there who hate him and go out of their way to clearly find any little loophole in anything that can be considered positive for him.

All signs point to him being signed. Especially since he himself has said he’s been in negotiations for the past few months. Besides, I don’t see a label he’s not signed with shelling out cash for him to make a record on their watch with their producers. Makes no sense. Plus why would Kara have slipped and said he was signed?

  • pj

I don’t think Kara, Sligh and Jason would all say something if he weren’t signed. I also don’t think Jason would have dropped Pete Ganbarg’s name for no reason. Just sayin’.

I tend to be pessimistic about these things, but all signs point to go and I’m happy!

  • http://myspace.com/arcadata arca

I liked that Billboard interview – made me remember why I was rooting for Jason last year – that boy totally exudes effortless charm. Hope the formal announcement comes out soon – I want to see Jason back on the Idol stage promoting his single!

  • Suzanne

Atlantic has some great artists–Jason Mraz, Tracy Chapman. This is great–really incredible–news for Jason. When so much time passed, I really didn’t think it would happen for him. I really hope he releases a great album.

  • ladymadonna

This is awesome news – Atlantic should be a very good fit for Jason. I liked him a lot last season and several of his performances rank right up there amongst my all-time Idol faves. Hell, I liked almost the entire top 10 in S7, which has never remotely been the case before and is decidedly not the case this season. So it’s fantastic to see so many of them working hard, forging their own paths and getting some breaks that could help them find success in this meatgrinder of a business. I look forward to hearing what he puts out there.

  • 4got

I nearly missed this party and I’m glad I scrolled down!! Yay for Jcas, can’t wait t get that record.

Who knew Kara had some positives??? I better not let her negatives blind me and hope she’s a positive for Jason. I’m willing to give her a second chance.

  • Grammie Kari

I am so happy for Jason – this is terrific news! He was my favorite from Season 7 and one of my favorites of all time. Such charisma…just a sweetheart! I can’t wait to buy his CD. WTG Jason!

Hi vagabond! I agree about the warm fuzzies.

  • Ashley19

    Awesome! Congrats to Jason!

  • bean99

Good for Jason. He may not have been my favorite during the season but he seems like a sweet guy and I wish him luck.

I honestly hope Jason has some amazing writers. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not one of them, and I think, without amazing writers, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nothing. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve always been a fan. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d have gotten exactly nowhere on his own.

Gingerly I’m curious what this is based on. Have you heard a lot of his own songwriting? Did you know about him before Idol? On the show, he had to sing covers, so there was no hint of his own songwriting abilities.

I get the feeling that he is a songwriter and he’s been writing a lot of songs. I’m not sure why you think he is a terrible songwriter, based on what? Plus he’s young and probably has a lot of learning still to do, but I like his sensibilities and sensitivity, I think he might have something to say worth hearing.

    Suzanne Apr 11th, 2009 at 2:01 am

Atlantic has some great artistsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Jason Mraz, Tracy Chapman.

John Fields, the Jonas Bros. producer working with Jason on “Miles Away” in the Kara video, has personally produced top 40 or AC albums for Miley Cyrus, Mandy Moore, Clay Aiken, and Pink, as well as for more alternative artists like Soul Asylum, Jimmy Eat World, Lifehouse, Rooney, and Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket. The latter two in bold type are favorites close to my heart.

Looking at the albums Fields has helmed, his production values on those with which I am familiar seem to be glossy and smooth — but in a way that is respectful of the artist’s uniqueness. I hope he will let Jason be the best Jason he can be.

  • lizland

I may end up liking his music the most of any, who knows, but he comes across as so vacuous I can’t stand to see him in interviews.

  • http://castrofics.com suszalwaze

i’ve read so many threads on jason being signed with atlantic and writing/recording for his album that i don’t remember where i read this but his album is slated for a july ’09 release so the single should come out very, very soon. you know it’ll come out months before the album considering atlantic records is a major record label and that’s the way major records promote their albums.

Cute video clip of an interview that Jason did with Sirius radio last May but they just put it up on YouTube:

It’s official! From the front page of Jason’s website ( http://www.jasoncastromusic.com/ ), the official statement from Atlantic Records:

    APRIL 13, 2009
    ATLANTIC SIGNS JASON CASTRO;
    ACCLAIMED SINGER/SONGWRITER SLATED TO RELEASE
    DEBUT ALBUM LATER THIS YEAR

Atlantic Records has announced the signing of singer/songwriter Jason Castro. The Texas-based tunesmith à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ best known as the third runner-up on the 2008 season of Foxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s American Idol à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ is currently hard at work on his debut album, set for release later this year. Among his creative collaborators are Grammy Award-winning producer John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Soul Asylum) and a number of acclaimed songwriters, including Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Jewel, Santana), Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall), Sacha Skarbek (James Blunt, Jason Mraz), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams), and Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat).

A multi-talented singer and guitarist, Jason Castro was among the most popular and talented artists in American Idol history, entering the record books as the first contestant ever to play an instrument on the show. His performance of the Leonard Cohen-penned classic à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hallelujahà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ proved such an audience favorite that cult hero Jeff Buckleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s rendition of the song hit #1 on the iTunes chart the following week, selling an astonishing 178,000 digital singles. Jason scored a chart-topping single of his own a few weeks later, when his interpretation of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Over The Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ also hit #1 on iTunes after a show-stopping performance of the song on American Idol. Upon the seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s conclusion, Castro was among the stars of the hugely successful à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Since then, Jason has been busy writing and woodshedding the new songs that will appear on his debut album. In December, he teamed with Amazon.com to release a free download of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“White Christmasà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as a special holiday gift to his fans. Castro has also recorded a new version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hallelujah,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which will be featured on the soundtrack to the film, Amar A Morir, to be released theatrically this summer.

In addition, Jason has been a prominent supporter of a variety of charity organizations. Last December saw him starring at a Garland, Texas Christmas concert benefitting the cityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Best Education Foundation. He has also been an active supporter of The Recording Academyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s MusiCares Foundation.
