Kara DioGuardi tells Entertainment Tonight that she’s not feuding with her fellow judges, loves working at American Idol and is not ready to quit.

She also mentions that her contract with Idol is for only for 1 year.

While she hasn’t added anything new or original to the panel, Kara’s critiques are often constructive, even if they are long-winded.

There is potential there, but the established clique of three–Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell haven’t been willing to adjust their egos game to make room for her. The show time overruns are one consequence of that problem.

Considering the 4-judge panel has been a bit of a cluster f**k this season, I won’t be surprised if Idol producers choose to let Kara go at the end of her contract.

If Kara is let go, I would love to hear a tell all, how druged up is Paula? Do the judges really get along? so many question she could answer

  • Victoria

^ That would be fun, but I think she’s too nice to actually do it.

I feel bad, but I think we won’t be seeing her again next year. She has a ton of potential as a judge, but she hasn’t really found her stride. It makes her look even worse because she’s the odd one out in a panel with the Original 3. I think she could really help the contestants if she were given a chance to work with them behinds the scenes for a longer amount of time, instead of talking in soundbites. I’d love to see what she could do as a mentor, but I doubt TPTB will let that happen.

Although I appreciate Simon’s honesty and candor, he is like the other two, egomaniacs. I never really noticed it much before this season, but adding Kara certainly has brought out the bratty side of the other three, that’s for sure.

Abdul rambles incoherently most of the time, and offers very little in the way of constructive anything – she feels her job is to sugarcoat and play nice, fine, but it isn’t helpful and becomes tedious.

Simon is Simon, and he likes to think his opinion is the only one worth spouting, and at times it is – always the last word, but at least he doesn’t ramble and gets to the point. I like that.

Randy has his catchphrases that get old after hearing them over and over. Sometimes his critiques are right on, and then other times it’s just a collection of colloquialisms.

Kara is constructive, and pointed, and I don’t mind if a few are long-winded as long as they make sense and offer advice and direction to the contestants.

    I hope she stays.

  • hwc

I think all four judges should go.

  • sallyas1

I’ve heard that Kara does help them quite a bit behind the scenes. Adam has given her credit for helping him “reign in” his performance style.

I do feel bad for Kara as well. On the negative, she’s too wordy. Takes too much time with her comments. On the positive, her comments are the only ones that are constructive to the contestants. Paula is just out there, Randy is stuck on his catch phrases, and Simon is more interested in being rude than actually giving something constructive to the contestants.

Simon should be ashamed of himself (though I’m sure he isn’t). He’s been rude to Kara since day one, and flipping her off behind her back on camera is uncalled for and frankly AI or he should have to pay some kind of fine (though they won’t).

  • bean99

They showed a Paula interview on GMA and she said she and Randy found out they were adding a 4th judge on their way to the first auditions. Maybe that’s why they’re so pissy about her. The problem isn’t that she talks too much, it’s that none of them are willing to cut down what they say as Mj said. I think the only way she’ll be back is if Paula makes good on leaving which I doubt.

  • undercub

Kara has been consistently perceptive about the ins and outs of the music industry, as well as providing the most specific constructive criticism and guidance for the contestants. She’s a better actual “judge” than either Randy (whose vagaries have prompted TWoP to drop him from their recaps) or Paula (who just loves EVERYTHING!). She’s doing her job, and to this viewer, doing it well. I don’t understand the Kara hate.

  • Victoria

^ I agree, she’s more constructive than Randy and Paula. However, I love Paula anyway and I hope she stays. Randy, eh. It would be wierd without him but it wouldn’t kill me or anything.

Sallyas1, I think when Adam said Kara helped him reign in his performance style, he was referring to her Hollywood Week comments that he was too theatrical. She helped him realize that the cameras are so close (as opposed to an audience at a performance) you have to reign it in. That’s what it sounded like to me, from the context he made the comment in.

And, you’re right, Simon should be ashamed of himself.

  • ettacandy

Kara was actually great this week – her critiques were actual critiques. I’ve been very disappointed but I do see potential.

Perhaps they hired her to do some on-the-job (in the fire) training with the other 3, knowing that at least one will not renew their contract next year?

And what abotu Randy – wouldn’t his contract be up at the same time as Simon and Paula?

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

I actually think that up through the Top 13 this has been Paula’s most logical and pertinent year. For the first half, the woman actually made sense on more than one occasion. Then we get to the Idol Dome and phhht.

I think Kara is a far better judge than Randy. He’s never ever had much cred with me and that comment that this is the most talented 7 ever….someone swapped his and Paula’s cups.

  • johnnyp

Who is that hot chick doing the side pose behind Kara to the right at the very end of the video? Is that Fergie?

  • sallyas1

Yeah that’s Fergie. Hard to recognize her with the dark hair (which I hate on her).

  • sallyas1

Randy used to be good. First couple of seasons he was the best judge of the 3. And I think Simon didn’t like that and put the kibosh on it. Ever since then, Randy’s been stuck on his catch phrases.

I suspect Paula will be back next season as well. Simon won’t let her go. He’ll lose his arm rest if she leaves.

I’m not sure why Simon’s contract doesn’t end until next season. I think after one of the early seasons he renegotiated? But that’s just a vague memory on my part.

Once Simon’s contract is up, I don’t think he will be back. And at that point Paula will be gone as well. I think that is why Paula hasn’t signed on for another year yet. I suspect she wants more than a year, and the AI powers don’t want to do it. Only reason AI will bring Kara back is for her to take over Simon’s slot once he leaves.

She’s not feuding with them. They are feuding with her.

    Good.
I hope they don’t renew it, she’s a huge disappointment and a waste of time.

I find this comment to be very insightful and accurate. I feel the same way about Kara, Randy and Simon.

The only additional comment that I’d like to make is that I feel that Paula adds to the experience of the contestants. She’s always in their corner and cares about them as PEOPLE. You can always find her dancing to their songs, jumping up to console them etc. I feel like the contestants benefit from having Paula there…particularly the young ones.

  • pj

I think 4 judges are too many. I say get rid of Randy and keep Kara.

  • CSFan

I’d much rather see Randy leave so we can get a sense of how Kara could do without having to battle the clique of 3. The times when she says “F it” and doesn’t even try to fit in with the other three are the times she gives the best critiques. Too often though she seems to be trying to parrot the others or say things that will please the producers.

I’d like Kara to come back and hope it is her, not Paula or Randy, that rounds out the judges table next year.

  • elisa3da

I kinda agree with pj, get rid Randy, He’s getting worse :(

He has always been an ego maniac. I believe people only like him because he is so cutting with his comments. I think it speaks to people’s desires to release their frustrations. Best way, see others get cut down.

Abdul rambles incoherently most of the time, and offers very little in the way of constructive anything – she feels her job is to sugarcoat and play nice, fine, but it isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t helpful and becomes tedious.

Paula’s feeback, while not always articulate, is constructive. All the contestants that are allowed in the top12/13 should be considered talented. I think since Paula has been in the industry for a long time, she recognizes the power of positive feedback. A SINCERE, encourgaging word goes a long way. IMO she is genuine.

Simon is Simon, and he likes to think his opinion is the only one worth spouting, and at times it is – always the last word, but at least he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t ramble and gets to the point. I like that.

If he actually paid attention, then perhaps yes. The problem is that as brief as he is, he is frequently over critical without merit.

Randy has his catchphrases that get old after hearing them over and over. Sometimes his critiques are right on, and then other times ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a collection of colloquialisms.

Randy, eh. There are times he is spot on, but he too is inarticulate and his catch phrases annoy me.

Kara is constructive, and pointed, and I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mind if a few are long-winded as long as they make sense and offer advice and direction to the contestants.

Thing is, she’s not constructive, at least in terms of why she is there and the premise of the show. She is smarmy to me, and her goal of putting contestants in a box is terrible. I had high hopes for her, however, her demeanor on the show has put me off.

    I hope she stays.

    I hope she goes. :)

The only additional comment that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d like to make is that I feel that Paula adds to the experience of the contestants. Could not agree more!

  • aiken4olivia

I totally am diggin Kara as one of the judges this year. I think harsh criticism about her judging is unfair. Simon, Paula and Randy had it rough their first year and “we” were tough on them….Why Kara should stay, she’s up Paula’s game. If not, Paula would definitely be inarticulate. With that said, I think some one is writing Paula’s comments because there is no way in heck she can come up with something so smart in just a few short seconds that she has time to make a comment….Kara’s comments have been just and pin point and equally as smart as Simon’s although Kara is a bit kinder…..Simon and Kara should stay….find another judge that can match their wits, then we would have a true Idol judging panel…..

  • Victoria

Aiken4olivia, I don’t think someone is scripting Paula’s comments. I’ve seen her read a script and it’s not that she’s bad at it, she just sounds different. Not as Paula-ish. So I knnow I’m in the minority, but I think she’s actually giving her own critiques. She’s certainly been in the industry long enough to say something remotely smart. Of course that’s just my oppinion.

I’d like to see Simon, Paula, and Kara stay, but I’m afraid losing Randy would kill the show. Crazy as it sounds, most casual viewers still love him and view him as the “reasonable” one.

  • TwigLA

If Kara talked in the voice she used on this interview, I think she’d be much more likable. On the show she seems to be talking down, uptight, and as someone said up-thread, smarmy.

I think she’s having a problem finding her identity here. It’s different than anything she’s done before. She’d do well to use less words … and a whole lot less body language and just be loose.

Speaking of body language … the incident being repeated on the Kris critique with Randy and Simon.

Here is what I saw. The audience was going wild over Kris and this was after they got blasted for running over and cut down to 2 judges per contestant the week before. She and Randy were talking to each other and it appeared a ‘what should we do?’ type of conversation. The applause was running into Randy’s time. Randy shrugged (like a go ahead) and Kara started saying Kris, Kris. Again looked at Randy when the audience quieted and he gestured to her. She gave her critique.

Randy was also turned and looking at Simon who was looking back and also to the audience. This ‘finger’ gesture of his – thumb under side of face, 3 fingers folded, one finger up towards temple is something he does often.

I also do it, as does most of my family. It’s not conscious and it has nothing to do with what we’re thinking. It’s just comfortable. My Dad was even worse though. He always pointed with his middle finger when he was trying to make a point and that always set us off into giggles.

Lastly, I think Paula’s great. I think her words are her own except when she does those little games with Simon and Randy. You know the ones where they bet each other to fit some ridiculous phrase into a critique.

Randy is the one I’ve really grown tired of and I feel is less and less relevant.

  • bean99

I don’t know if someone is writing for her or not but Paula has comments that she’s memorized. I’ve noticed it at least twice this season when talking about Adam’s songs. They didn’t even fit the song and were so OTT.

I think Kara will get better if given the chance but not as long as the other judges are banding against her. I like her and hope she stops worrying about what the others say and give honest critiques.

  • abbysee

I think Kara should go. I don’t think she knows how to cut to the chase. Her drooling after Matt is unseemly and unprofessional. I know it killed her to have to criticize him for a performance she would have loved two weeks ago. I also think that she lost all credibility after the bikini girl incident. First I thought it was cool, but in retrospect there was a little playa hatin there. I always get the impression that she want to perform still, instead of judge. This is not the right platform for that.

Simon is Simon, while I am sure he could be replaced there are very few men who could do what he does and still at the end of the day you know he’s a human being doing his job. He’s like the executioner, but without the cloak to hide his identity. It takes some serious cajones to tell the truth and shame the devil as the old sistahs in the church would say. I also think he just damn gorgeous, so he stays.

Paula is my homegirl. I like that fact that she get up and shakes her ass if she wants, she cries when she wants, and is speechless when the all words fail. That is what music does to me, so I can totally relate to her. I also trust her judgement alot more than the others as I actually think she cares.

Randy, Randy, Randy. I think when it comes to voices, he’s the one who usually is spot on in that regard. He is the champion of the singer. I will always appreciate his championing some who would have not had the chance, or those who were being depimped, if Randy thinks you can sing the phonebook, he’s usually dead on. His slang and the endless search for a catchphrase is ridiculous, but then what is this show if not ridiculous. Remember this dude produced Mariah and played with Journey, he has cred. Not if he can stop booing Simon, and retire the dog pound then I say he keeps his gig too.

  • Victoria

Lastly, I think Paulaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great. I think her words are her own except when she does those little games with Simon and Randy. You know the ones where they bet each other to fit some ridiculous phrase into a critique.

ITA, and I love that game, lol. It makes it so entertaining… the moth and the melon ball… :laugh_tb:

  • Grammie Kari

I was so pleased with her critique this week on Anoop’s performance. I think, with time Kara could be a valuable assest to the show.

After what Paula did to Jason last year, I don’t care if she does leave. She has her good moments and does bring humor to the show. However, there isn’t enough room for two girls on the panel.

  • http://www.f3-properties.com Animated

Maybe I will watch AI if Hugh Jackman takes the place of Simon, Catherine Zeta Jones will replace Paula and JayZ will replace Randy.
Otherwise I am done with AI.

I am only holding on because of Adam Lambert. It’s like watching a supernova unfold and you would not want to miss that. I make time in spite of all the business pressures.

Have never followed through this show, except last year, listened and checked out David Cook as my family was crazy over him, but did not actually have the time and patience to watch every single show.

  • iluvhollywood

I just don’t like Kara at all, it’s just awkward watching AI when she comes on. It’s been working fine with Randy, Paula and Simon, now all of a sudden someone else thrown into the mix like that, it’s hard to adjust to.
Honestly I don’t care if they get rid of Kara or Simon. I don’t know what his deal is, but Simon is getting worse all the time and he’s just ridiculous. Someone seriously needs to tell him to grow up, or if it’s gonna bother him so much to have to sit there and do the show, he can take himself and all his money an go back to England, hopefully he’ll stay there. He is such an ass.

  • sillypraguer

Paula’s been particularly good this season, I don’t see Simon renewing his contract since the show is beginning its decline, and I don’t see Paula staying once Simon leaves. Or at least I don’t think she should stay, because like it or not, the loss of Simon would accelerate the ratings decline by quite a bit.

Re: Kara, yes, she’s been a disappointment. Not everyone is cut out to be a judge — I think they should have brought in Cheryl Cole. She did last season of X Factor and I think she was great. MJ brought up in another thread the idea of Simon gifting America with X Factor once his Idol contract expires. Paula would do great in an X Factor format, actually mentoring the kids. So they should just play scavenger and steal all that’s good from Idol (Simon, Paula and Ryan), leave behind the chaff (Randy and Kara), and start a new but very similar show. I think MJ’s totally right that Simon might do it — that’s where X Factor came from in the first place, just different enough from Pop Idol to get away with it. Although there was some litigation over that one? Anyway, I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong about my X Factor history.

  • sillypraguer

Another note — Kara is way more natural and appealing in that interview clip than she is on idol.

  • bleep

Aw, c’mon. Give Kara a chance. It’s her first year and she never really had experience with this sort of stuff. Like she said in Ellen, she was never really in the limelight. It’s hard for her to adjust.
