According to EOnline, Kara DioGuardi will return to American Idol next year, but will make significantly less money than her cohorts:

Guessing which of the judges will be back on American Idol next season has become a popular game. And yeah, we’re having trouble keeping track of the rumors, reports and whispers, too. However, we can tell ya that Kara DioGuardi will be back for season nine of the hit reality show…

“Her deal is done. There are no ifs, ands or buts,” a source said. “Done. She will be back.”

No surprise, but the source reports that DioGuardi’s new deal doesn’t even come close to what the other judges are getting or, in Paula Abdul’s case, asking for.

DioGuardi is set to start shooting a new season of auditions in the next week or so. Reps for DioGuardi and the show declined to comment. Even if Ms. Abdul is still hammering out a deal, we have a feeling all will be worked out in the end and all four judges will return.

I’m not surprised.   I predict Paula Abdul will be back too. Just watch.

Nice!! I love Kara so this is very exciting news. It’s fine that she is making less, she should be. She’s new and hasn’t done her time yet. I’m sure she enjoys her time on the show and is happy with whatever they offered her.

  • iluvai

I luv Paula and she better be back! Negotiate girl! Damn, I hate men with the power and the purse strings. She is so worth what she is asking for. imho.

  • Sherena

Saaaaaame. I really think they wouldn’t be holding out on Paula if she were a man who was worth what she is worth to the show. She needs to stand strong on the $12 million number, because she’s well worth that and they know it.

  • abbysee

Just keep her away from numbers and the coronation song and I guess I will adjust.

  • cookmerized

Let’s just hope that kara’s new contract comes without a coronation song clause.

  • Sherena

I like Kara & am glad she’s returning. I just hope all the judges’ talking time, except for Simon who seems to be reasonably succinct, should be cut in half.

  • Tony

    Damn.

  • competitivebynature

    Damn.

Lol I was just about to write that.

  • lostinidol

I was kind of thinking they were negotiating in order of importance. How did Kara squeeze in there before Paula? I wonder if this is some kind of message to Paula that they are set to go on without her so she better get in line.

  • LindaT

Ugh … Kara doesn’t add much to the panel, so I was hoping they would drop her.

I agree with MJ — we’ll probably have the same 4 judges again. However, I wish the show would go back to a 3-judge panel. With 4 judges, there is too much blah-blah and not enough focus on the contestants and on singing.

Oh well, come January I’ll be watching anyway, whoever the judges are.

  • AC

Kara’s freaking rich already off all those songs she has so that’s probably why she doesn’t seem to care about the money so much. I think even though she gets a lot of criticism, she does like this job and that’s why she’s also coming back.

I hope Kara doesn’t let me down when I say this, but I think she’ll be better next season with one out of the way. If anyone watched Idol the first season, it was really hard to watch the judges (or at least to me).

  • HotHotHot

Yuck! I was hoping they were going to dump her.

  • jammasta

I actually didn’t think Kara was terrible, though I think she talked WAY too much. I thought her critiques were usually well thought out, and gave what I thought was one of the weirdest judge lines ever when she critiqued Taylor Vaifanua and said something about how Taylor didn’t show her personality well and Kara said “What’s it like to go shopping with this girl?” Whenever Kara talked I immediately thought of that moment. Kara just needs to stay away from that coronation song and talk a bit less, and I’ll be good.

And I am with you on Paula staying too. I’m curious about audition time, though. Will Paula be there? For some reason I have a feeling contract negotiations will push her out of the auditions (Auditioners see the judges next month, right?), and if she isn’t there, how her absence will be explained in January. I have no idea how these negotiations work though.

    Yes!!!!!!

I’m so happy to hear that Kara is coming back! I hope it’s true!

  • http://www.thriftysisters.ecrater.com tammyinohio

Crap, I was really hoping Kara was gone!! Well, as long as they do whatever is necessary to keep Paula, I’ll be happy. The only two judges I care to see anyways are Simon and Paula. But, what I wouldn’t give to see Sharon Osborne sharing the judges table with Simon and Paula!! Now, that would be a hoot! *lol*

  • will

I have three words: Paula won’t be back.

(Not that I don’t bow to your expertise MJ!)

  • Squirrely

I have three words: Paula won’t be back.

LOL – I should clarify I’m laughing at Kara’s counting skills. I hope they do bring Paula.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

I’ve never seen the show without Kara, but what I’ve seen of it with her, leads me to the conclusion.. bullocks!

I was just this morning re-watching Adam’s performances, with judges comments, and frankly the woman is as irritating as an itch you can’t reach.

  • mar

Oh crap. Guess it will be a season with more judge-jabbering than actual singing yet again. Thank goodness for fast forward.

  • Dr. Tracey

Bummer, I was hoping she was history.

  • SpenserJ

I like Kara. I actually find her comments interesting, and relevant to the performances. I prefer her to Paula’s incoherent babble and Randy’s repetitive wind-up toy responses.

And, she doesn’t hide props under her skirt. So, she’s a-okay with me.

  • k4dc

Didn’t I read a while back that they were going to be expanding the performance shows next season so that they don’t run over time so often? Sounds like they have been planning on four judges for some time now. *sigh*

  • mmb

blech…4 judges is too much…my 9 yo son was watching Idol with me one night and commented re: Kara “She’s pretty and all, but I don’t like her attitude”

  • tinawina

I like her. I hope she hits her stride this year.

  • jumpstart

Let’s just hope that kara’s new contract comes without a coronation song clause.

Or with a clause forbidding her to ever write one again.

  • Gerien

I don’t understand why Kara gets so much hate, as with Danny this season. None of them has done anything to warrant it, imo. People just want to find scapegoats to blame for the failings of AI this season and the unfortunate ones are those 2. Expertise wise, she definitely far surpasses what Paula can bring. Just watch the video of her giving Megan advice here. The woman sure knows what she is talking about.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul_ElufubJo

Paula for sure can win vocabulary idol, but doesn’t bring much else to the table imo. I can see though why people like her because she is the “mother” of the group. Kara on the other hand says it like it is, though I didn’t care for her sometimes OTT rock god comments and I didn’t agree with her criticism of Kris’s apologize as karaoke. But other than that, she is usually the one that gives the most constructive critique among the group.

The producers should tell all the judges to cut their talking them by half from what they did this season. The show should be about the contestants and not the judges. Just my 2 C.

  • weareallinnocent

I like her too. I also like Paula and will find the show lacking without her.

If they needed someone to go, it should have been Randy. Likable guy, with a rich (connected) history in the business, but for me (for you for me) he rarely adds anything new or different to the mix. And talk about childish, Randy v. Simon antics at Top 3 when they’ve chosen songs for the contestants? Worst stuff I’ve seen, by far. They let their own egos and competitiveness bleed into their reviews of the Idols. Blech!

  • sallyas1

The biggest production problem with AI this season was their time management issues. While an extra judge added time, it should have been resolved a few weeks into the season. And it could have been once Kara stopped being so wordy. I’m good with Kara coming back.

However the time suck continued. I think Paula’s insistent interruptions during Simon’s critiques, and the coloring book time suck, and on and on were the biggest time wasters and the 2 of them showed no inclination to stop. Obviously Simon isn’t going anywhere. I’m hoping Paula doesn’t return. Maybe Simon’s head will get back into the game and he will give more constructive critique.

  • cwg509

I think Kara will be better next year, and I’m glad they gave her a second chance. The 3 judges were just getting old and I think Kara made Paula pull her shit together for the first time ever. So I hope Paula is back too. The main problem with the judges comments is that they have run out of new things to say after 8 years (esp Randy). I don’t know how TPTB can fix that.

If SYTYCD can be 2 hours of performances every week, why can’t Idol? That would give the kids more time to sing, and still leave time for video packages (one of my favorite elements) and the judges comments.

  • paperhearts63

I’m fine with her coming back as long as they don’t let her write the winner’s single again, because she is not a talented writer at all. They should let the top 2 contestants each write their own winner’s single.

  • Q3

I have three words: Paula won’t be back.

    I think that’s 4 words! LOL —

And like 4 judges it’s one to many! LMAO at that one. Very clever Will!

I’m OK with Kara or Paula, just not 4 judges again. Yak yak yak. Why don’t they just hire 5 judges and then they can just eliminate the contestants all together. It could be just like The View!

  • suebrody

I’ve said this before, but with all of the expertise Kara has, and God she knows the current musical scene as much as anyone *coughRandynotcough*, why didn’t we hear much of this show? Okay, I know these are sound bites, but when she actually did give a cogent opinion, I enjoyed it. SO…I hope she has the opportunity to do so this season and *will*. I will absolutely miss Paula if she leaves–she has been a staple of Idol, of course, and I often (not always) found her bantering with Simon amusing (plus she was SO supportive of the Idols, and they have all mentioned this)–but if this means that the judges get more time to critique, then fine. EXCEPT THAT THEY WON’T. So I hope Paula comes back, and TPTB figure out time management. If SYTYCD can do it, Idol can, too. They have 10 couples during Top 20 week, and we still get to hear some real criticism/praise (despite Mary’s Hot Tamale Train mania and Nigel’s perv comments).

BTW: I caught a snippet of Randy’s critique during S1 (for the woman who didn’t get that far in America’s Got Talent). Wow. He had some useful things to say! Did he forget how to do that?!

  • sallyas1

BTW: I caught a snippet of Randy’s critique during S1 (for the woman who didn’t get that far in America’s Got Talent). Wow. He had some useful things to say! Did he forget how to do that?!

I suspect he was told to tune it down. That Simon was supposed to be the “best judge”. However the first couple of seasons Randy was the best judge. He was the one the Idols looked at for constructive critique and they looked to Simon for his immediate gut reaction to their performance. If Simon liked their performance they were thrilled, but they looked to Randy for the constructive critique.

For some reason the AI powers thought Simon’s way of critiquing was the only one needed so I think they put the foot down on Randy. And that is when we started getting his “you can sing the phone book”, and “that was the bomb dawg”, etc etc.

  • colette

    well, grumble grumble, OK.

but if you’re gonna have four judges (instead of the three, any three, that many of us prefer) can TPTB please take the advice of nearly every media critic and many, many AI fans and do the following? I realize it’s Tough Love, but:

    1) Air fewer audition shows

    2) Try to give some audition airtime to all ( or most) contestants who wind up in the Top 36? better yet, cut the Top 36 back to Top 24

    3) Cut the BS melodrama related to shrill, grating celebrity wannabes like Bikini Girl, or hysterics like Lydia, andcut at least by half the sturm and drang within the small group auditions. Who the F really cares? Most of these people are not serious contenders. I just changed channels whenever that crap came on.

    4) Tell the judges to grow up and shut up. I’m for a time limit on their chatter, and a bell going off. Or better yet, an electric shock to their chair. I guess if you’re giving them millions a year to play patty-cake and run off to grab a smoke at every opportunity and to squabble with each other, it’s your loss. But you are seriously toying with the patience and interest of your viewers, who are getting very bored by their antics.

    5) More music! What’s the use of bragging that these are the “best top 12 ever” if you hae as few musical numbers as possible? If there’s anything that you should have learned from Season 8 its that when people are very talented, they deserve more of a showcase for the audience to enjoy and evaluate their music. MUSIC, REMEMBER? Look into it…

    6) Please give more breaks to former Idols on your elimination shows. That may not be essential, and I’m sure if you get miley, the jonas brothers or whomever the ratings will get a boost. But give your loyal fans a treat, and the people you “discovered” some help, by showcasing them — Elliott, Melinda, LaKisha, hell even Bucky….

    7) Have an independent commission or something decide on the Coronation Song. Or ask Stevie Wonder or Stephen Sondheim to write it. Or anyone on the street. ANYTHING would be better than the sludgy mess Kara & Co. came up with. Sure, we understand you want a new tune to rake in more profit than you would with an older tune. But do you really want the song to be the laughing stock of AI? Do you really want to repeat the poor reception it got in Kris’s set on tour? Wow, here’s a concept: what if it was a really good song by ONE songwriter? :rolleyes_wp:

  • will

    7) Have an independent commission or something decide on the Coronation Song. Or ask Stevie Wonder or Stephen Sondheim to write it.

Stephen Sondheim?? Now THAT I’d like to see!

Actually, Sondheim did already write the theme song for the Idol judges. It’s called “Send in the Clowns.”

  • Sherena

None of the original three judges are what they used to be. But I think it means something that all the contestants this year who were asked about their favorite judge said Paula, and even past contestants like Jordin want her to be back. She’s the heart of the show.

As for extraneous judges, why can’t we dump Randy? He didn’t say anything this season.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Oh darn, she didnt really add anything in my opinion. Her being there really took away from the Idols even more than it ever did before. I am disapointed to hear this

  • wand3rful

i actually dont mind kara. i hope she comes out of her shell next season and puts more effort in her critique……and yes, she has had her “blonde” moments :) however, i find it more irritating to listen to paula and simon quibble and randy’s staple comment: “dawg, for me for you….err… you know what im saying?”

plus, it seems she along w. simon have the most relevant feedback from the contestants. they all agree she was able to give them important critiques regarding their artistry (yeah, i went there), song choice and performance style. all anyone can say about Paula is that she’s “nice”.

  • wand3rful

thank you Colette!!!!…..hope Ken/Fox is listening and is able to incorporate at least some of those suggestions. especially #2, #3, and #6 !!!!!!!!!!! I keep saying year in and year out…show us more of the auditions of the semifinalists….show us more of hollywood week…the REAL hollywood week….i want to see everyone’s group performances…i want to see round 1 and round 3….thats exciting. make it more like a documentary about young artists trying to succeed…no need for bikini girl or norman gentle, you already have enough drama by simply showcasing the talent.

  • HappyDaisy

Disappointed, but not surprised. Kara’s too dramatic and four judges is too many.

I like Randy, he’s my favorite if I had to choose. He’s the most humble of the judges. The other three are so full of themselves that Randy gets little attention and chance to speak. The antics of Simon and Paula often cut into Randy’s comments last season, if I remember correctly. They typically have Randy speak first and he seems to try to stay within the alloted time, unlike the others. They should rotate and not have Simon as the always-final speaker.

The Simon and Paula “stuff” consumed way too much of Season 8. It was insulting to the viewers and unfair to the contestants. During judges’ feedback time, some of the Idols received only a very short time before the camera and almost no comments while others received much more.

  • cookcricket

GOOD! I’m glad. Someone on the panel of judges needs to be able to give constructive feedeback and I think Kara was able to do that quite well last year, esp. by the end of the season! I’ll think she’ll be even better this year. Congratulations Kara!!!

I do wonder however, if this announcement gives TPTB more power in their negotiations with Paula. I hope it works out for her to be back too.

Simon, leave Paula along when she’s talking and things should go a little smoother.
