Kanye West appeared on the View yesterday to talk about his upcoming tour with Lady Gaga and his album 808s & Heartbreak.

At about the 4:04 mark, Sherri Shephard asks Kanye about Kris Allen’s rendition of “Heartless”.

After viewing a clip of Kris’s performance–with a big, big smile on his face–Kanye said, “Everyone who sings the song sings it better than me.” Kanye added, “The Fray, one of my favorite rock bands, covered it, and that song got played on American Idol twice.”

He went on to compare his tunes to Broadway and country melodies, and mimicked what the song would sound like done country. Stick to rap Kanye!

Kanye got a little more specific to Kris when he told USA Today, “I’m so happy that he performed it on his road to victory. I’m just really happy that he involved my song. That my songs are a part of people’s consciousness spirit like that is amazing.”

  • Akatot

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Everyone who sings the song sings it better than me.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I couldn’t tell whether he was saying that with sarcasm or not. Using everybody though makes me think that he is unhappy being compared to an upstart — he’s not called Mr Ego for nothing. But then again, maybe he knows that auto-tune sucks. Even that USA Today statement doesn’t really say anything, except that he’s happy that his song was performed.

  • weareallinnocent

That’s very cool! It makes me happy (and a little teary) for Kris to see this!

I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t tell whether he was saying that with sarcasm or not.

I think Kanye was being self-depreciating with that comment. He had a big smile on his face when he watched the clip. Also, he’s right about the killer melody. I don’t care what anyone says, I heart me some Kanye. :-)

  • girlygirl

He said on his website a while back that he really like Kris’ version. I think Kanye’s just taking a little jab at himself — he’s said in the past he knows he isn’t a great singer.

It would be cool if he and Kris could collaborate on a song for Kris’ debut album! Kris has said publicly how much he loves Kanye’s latest stuff — and there have been a lot of collaborations between rappers and pop/rock/r&b singers in the recent past.

Meanwhile it looks like Kris and Adam are finally back in the studio rehearsing for the tour (paparazzi alert)

i can’t believe the “Voice of My Generation” took to someone else covering his song that nicely. I have a feeling his manager had some words of advice for Kanye to use…

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Every cover of the song means money for Kanye. Kanye likes money. Money makes him smile.

  • suebrody

I love Kanye as a rapper. Kanye as a pop star is pretty sad; autotune, anyone? AND YET: he scores #1 singles (as does Jamie Foxx) using said autotune. Sigh.

Happy to see KRADAM together again! Even if TMZ sucks.

you know, auto-tune and Kanye’s lack of singing ability notwithstanding, in my slightly biased opinion (bc I love Kanye and think he’s brilliant and don’t give a flying frig how big his ego is), I think “Heartless” is his best song yet. Having someone like Kris or the Fray rearrange it in a different style and sing it so well only accentuates how good a song it is and how well written it is, imo. But like I said, I’m biased. LOL.

ETA: and he’s touring with Lady Gaga? I might have to go to that tour! Sweet!

  • unique28v

Kanye went on the view???? lol oh wow.

  • girlygirl

Kanye is co-headlining a tour with Lady Gaga. THAT is going to be interesting — two huge stars with huge egos…should be great, but could also be a train wreck!

Anyway, the Fray’s version of “Heartless” has been a sizeable hit, and Kris’ version has done well on the digital tracks charts — so all’s good in Kanye’s world with that song.

  • KayGee

I don’t think that Kanye takes himself serious as a singer. He is first and foremost a producer, then a rapper, and he wanted to sing so he hooked himself up with the autotune thingy…

I don’t think that everything that Kanye says or does is ego driven, he is a human too. All my decisions aren’t based on the same ideologies of my life.

    Leave Kanye alone!!! :smile_wp:

    Go Kradam!!! :clap_tb:

  • sma11ie

I love Kanye– he’s a brilliant song writer and artist IMO. Singer, not so much. Also, my Top40 station totally started spinning the hell out of Heartless after Kris covered it, even though it had been on the wane prior to that. So he’s benefiting, I think.

  • AC

I think the fact that Kris did perform Heartless did feed into Kanye’s ego so I’m thinking he is happy that one of his songs basically did push Kris closer to the title. I doubt that he would hold anything back if he didn’t like it because he doesn’t really have that much of a filter, so that image of him smiling is really cool.

  • auntieaimee

Very cool. :) That’s the sign of a great song when it totally holds up no matter the style in which it’s delivered. Kanye should be proud!

  • ShariG

I loved that Kanye was smiling from ear to ear and bopping his head along with Kris when he was watching the video of Kris singing Heartless. He obviously enjoyed Kris’s rendition. Good for him and good for Kris. With the kind of bad press Kanye gets regarding ego, it is nice to see that he was pleased that others are covering his song.

  • Sunn

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care what anyone says, I heart me some Kanye. :-)

So do I :) . A concert with Kanye and Lady Gaga!! That’s a dream concert for me. Looks like I’ll have to look up the concert dates and arrange a short trip to the states. I don’t usually do this (I did it for Streisand) but this concert I can not miss.

  • colette

    hahaha

    sweet.

but also, ya gotta remember the guy has an ego the size of Texas. it’s always all about Kanye — he just “wrote” a book of aphorisms!

he was gracious, cool, more than Ray LaMontagne was originally about Taylor singing “Trouble” on Idol and giving Ray’s music a HUGE bump in the process.

    anyway, it’s all good….

  • callitags

I know Kanye has a reputation for ego, and I’ve seen bits and pieces of it here and there. (I don’t really follow Kanye) Given that, I found this interview really interesting, especially in terms of body language. If you knew nothing about Kanye, and only saw this interview, he might seem a little insecure and self-conscious. I was struck by the contrast of what I’ve heard about him versus how he came across in this interview.

He was obviously delighted watching the clip of Kris doing “Heartless.” That was sweet to see.

  • Matt

That was the most gracious smile I’ve ever seen on Kanye when he was watching the clip. I think he really dug what Kris did with it.

I’m really liking Kanye as of late. I think he may be one of the most misunderstood people in entertainment.

  • colette

    hmmm. Misunderstood? Methinks not.

but who ever said being in show biz means leaving your ego at the door? It’s part of his shtick.

  • Matt

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s part of his shtick.

I don’t think he has a “shtick.” I think he’s a guy with a very high opinion of himself (to say the least) but is respectful when means necessary. I wouldn’t classify that as a “shtick.”

He is a brilliant musical mind and has earned everything he has received.

  • maturin

I love our culture. This is where capitalism is a force for good: here’s the young hiphop singer who’s comfortable with all these mom/nana types! Sell a few more records and books!

Fun to see him enjoying Kris! I think we knew he liked it, he’d posted to his blog, but it was fun to see him beaming. Probably all good from his perspective–his song was one of the big moments on a show half the country watches, as well as being a cross-over hit for the Fray.

And he was making tons of sense! I’m use to the Kanye with the crazy blog posts, and he’s being so charming here. About the teaching kids and his mom.

His imitation of the country singing is LOL.

  • lavender1960

Kanye said a few months that he was making an effort to be a better man
because he was realizing just how arrogant he was coming off and he is right, everyone sings his song better than he does but it is kudos to him for writing the song in the first place. Because one cannot deny that he has brought something clever, fresh and unique to the world of hip hop and rap when it comes to his writing and his videos, I even love the stage presentation for Heartless.

Or perhaps 2 public humiliations vis a vis his singing have humbled him.

  • May

I love what Kanye said about Kris and I don’t think he was being sarcastic at all. I think he genuinely liked Kris’ rendition. Kanye may be arrogant but he is also a brilliant artist who also has the ability to recognize the talent in others. Kris also mentioned wanting to do a song with Kanye and I think that would be cool (although I doubt it will happen in the near futrue). FYI: I heard that there are a lot of fake Kanye’s on twitter. LOL

  • kamokun

Urm… I thought people hate Kanye West?? I don’t really care about him but I have heard that people said Kanye West is a douche/as*hole, and he’s so full of himself?

Anyway, who cares about him, Kris is more awesome! Kris is gonna reach #1 chart someday… for sure!

  • cookcricket

Here’s my translation: Sure I gave Heartless a great melody and the lyrics are mine and anyone with a great voice and the musicianship to rearrange it to fit their style will sing it brilliantly (Kris). I loved his smile at Kris’s singing. :)

He knows he doesn’t have a great voice, right? The whole autotune discussion was very interesting to me.

This kind of reminds me of Collective Soul’s response to DC singing “The World I know” last year. They said something like, “It’s nice to hear someone sing this song with a great voice.”

I’m sure there are some great songs (filled with emotion) on his album. I may check some out, but could I just have Kris cover the entire album and then I’ll buy it? LOL.

I like Kanye, he’s doing some really good things!

I don’t watch the View. Are these ladies always so mixed up about what’s going on in the interview? BW almost seemed confused (dare I say senile?).

  • Sunn

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure there are some great songs (filled with emotion) on his album. I may check some out, but could I just have Kris cover the entire album and then Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll buy it? LOL.

cookcricket, “The Coldest Winter” off his latest album will make you cry. It’s beautiful.

  • jz

    Yayyy Kanyayyyyy. :)

  • cookbunny

I said it in headlines and I’ll say it again…you SURE we can’t just release “Heartless” as a full-fledged, promoted-to-radio, stay-on-iTunes-beyond-the-standard-AI-deadline, single, and pretend “No Boundaries” never happened?

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

lol…. he has to admit that anyone who sings his song shings it better because he, Kanye, use autotune ;) … lol I still love him and I like the original Heartless a lot…

  • Victoria

I didn’t think I would ever hear Kanye make a comment like that. Wow.

    I said it in headlines and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll say it againà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦you SURE we canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just release à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heartlessà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as a full-fledged, promoted-to-radio, stay-on-iTunes-beyond-the-standard-AI-deadline, single, and pretend à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No Boundariesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ never happened?

    Yes, please!

  • taran33

I thought Kanye came across like he liked Kris’ version. Got a kick out of hearing him sing the country version. I’m with cookbunny, release Kris’ “Heartless” to radio! :)

  • ShariG

I remember feeling the same way about David Cook last year. I really wanted some of his AI I-tune downloads to be released. I love about 7 of Kris’s downloads from this year any one of which I would love to be hearing on my radio. Oh wait! I am hearing them on my CD burned from I-tunes instead of my radio because I’m not liking a whole lot of the stuff they are playing on FM radio these days. It seems like they pick 10 songs and play them to death. Give me an entire CD of Kris with a couple of Adam and a couple of Allison thrown in and I am a happy camper.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

cookcricket, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Coldest Winterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ off his latest album will make you cry. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s beautiful.

The live freestyle of “Pinocchio Story” too. He really lets a lot out in that one. I think it gives an insight to what he went through after his mom passed and he and his fiance broke up. It breaks my heart. (the fan screaming is hella distracting though. lol)

I agree with Matt that Kanye is a brilliant musical mind and has earned everything he’s gotten. I’ve said it before, but I think “808′s & Heartbreak” is a brilliant album – his best yet – and IMO, it will be a real travesty if it doesn’t win albumn of the year at the Grammy’s next year.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

They actually showed Kanye on my local news doing his concert for the kids. It warmed my heart. He’s really sincere about that.

Like I said above, I heart him and his music. He is a genius, even if his vocals are not. He understands his limits. To me, that’s artistry.

Apparently, I don’t care about ego in performers. Why? Because you have to have ego to do that.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/RemusL/ RemusL

I hate to say this but that was actually a decent interview on The View. The women were all very respectful of him and made sure to bring up the important issues like his foundation’s charitable work with inner city school kids.

I thought KanYe came across very humble, which is quite different from his legendary reputation for oversized ego and arrogance. Perhaps the passing of his mother made him realize the things he needed to improve in himself. The upfront admission about him deliberately embracing Autotune for this album was a surprise for me.

As for Kris’ rendition of “Heartless”, I think KanYe truly enjoyed it, along with the Fray’s version. Personally, I like Kris’ version the best. Before it got pulled from YouTube, Kris’ AI performance of “Heartless” got over a million views. That’s pretty extraordinary.

  • ross

They need to release that to radio, seriously. How can we make that happen?

  • Cakenbake

I agree about releasing Kris’s version of Heartless on the radio.
