iTunes has released it’s year-end Top albums and Song charts, and Simon Cowell’s girl, Leona Lewis takes the top spot on the Songs chart.

Season 6 winner, Jordin Sparks’ duet with Chris Brown, “No Air” is #7. Pretty awesome for an Idol who had virtually no buzz coming off her win last year.

Great for Jordin, IÂ ´m happy for her… anyone remember when NO AIR was released for iTunes…

  • SashaB

    Go Jordin.

Magic Rainbow was #58 in the Top Overall 2008 Songs, #24 in Pop. Wow. That song amazes me.

    Crush was #62, Overall.

    Congrats to both Davids.

  • soundscene

With just 3 months of downloads, Crush made it to #62 on the Top Songs list. Go David A.!! I think the iTunes “year” ended the week before Crush went platinum (that’s when all the other charts ended their sales year, so I’m assuming iTunes is using that date as well).

TOML comes in at #58. Go DC!

Jordin did really well with her other songs. Tattoo is at #41 and One Step at a Time is at #63. Jordin’s album also made it to #97 on the Top Albums list!

  • Kirsten

anyone remember when NO AIR was released for iTunes

It would have been released to iTunes with the CD back in November of last year.

Since iTunes is releasing this chart now (grrr….this is not the year end), I suspect that the “year” starts in November.

  • soundscene

Since iTunes is releasing this chart now (grrrà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.this is not the year end), I suspect that the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ starts in November.

Soundscan started its new year the week of November 18 (using a Tuesday to indicate when new releases come out). I figured that may be when iTunes started its new year as well.

Which is odd since DA will register a week of album sales in 2008, but DC won’t. It also explains why TOML is higher up on the list than Crush when Crush passed it during the sales week of November 18th.

Thank you Kirsten, so it has almost a complete year of sells… still pretty amazing for Jordin…

DA and DC both did really well considering that their songs don ´t have lot of time out…

Thank you about the chart information soundscene …

Which is odd since DA will register a week of album sales in 2008, but DC wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t.

Well, it’s not odd. It’s just usually what happens. This is why Idol likes to have their big release the first week of the BB year. Taylor Swift will also lose her first week sales which were significant. Josh Groban has the best selling album released in 2007, but his sales were split across two chart years, so he doesn’t get credit for them (except from true year end charts).

It really bugs me that people have such short attention spans that we cannot wait until the end of the year to find out which song/album was actually the best seller within that calendar year. You can go direct-to-print in hours, but nope, we cut the year off in mid-November. Why don’t they just invent a new name for these years? Lots of countries don’t follow the Julien calender. Invent the Record Year and year one could be the year that SoundScan started (or the year that phonographs were invented). I’m such a nit picker. Thus ends my yearly rant on end-of-year lists.

  • tinawina

Magic Rainbow is like the zombie of coronation songs. It Just.Won’t.Die. That thing rose in sales AGAIN this week, didn’t it? While I am happy for David, I am sad for my (hopeless) dream that the Idol producers would drop the whole crappy coronation song tradition. But now, because the damn Rainbow refuses to go away, they will be all about the treacly suckiness more than ever. 6 (7?) months later and it’s still charting. *shakes fist to the heavens* Damn You Rainbow! :laugh_tb:

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

    lol Kirsten…

  • AInoob

Weird. My post disappeared :blink_tb: Lemme try again…

Congratulations to both Davids! Definitely goes to show that the music business is big enough for both of them (plus other Idols too! lol). Is there a link to the complete list? I can’t find one at the RS link above. I’m curious to see what other Idols (like maybe Daughtry or Carrie) charted as well.

I’m pretty happy that Magic Rainbows made the list, I’m pretty sure not many would have predicted that when the song came out. Go Little Rainbow, Go! :clap_tb: :lol_wp: (ETA: oops, sorry tinawina, lol)

I’ve never paid attention to charts before so I don’t know, but is it usual for soundtracks to make the top albums list? I only recognized one of those three movies. :huh_tb: (I do seem to be especially smiley happy today!)

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

    wtg JORDIN :)

  • Trina

Lord. When I heard the demo of TOML that morning of the finale my prediction was that since it was such a boring, cheesy piece of dreck it would cause whoever was forced to sing and release it much failure and would probably be one of the worst selling coronation songs. Oops :lol_tb:

  • IGetCranked

I agree about the year end calendar Kirsten.

I’m glad that both David’s were able to get a song in for this year though! Jordin did very well!

  • soundscene

Yeah, Jordin did awesome. Good for her. I’m really looking forward to her second album–I have a feeling it will be more sophisticated than the first. She’s recording soon, right?

I haven’t heard, but I hope so. And it would be amazing if she did a duet with Archie on it! I didn’t buy her first album…the clips I heard weren’t enough to convince me to buy anything other than singles, but my sister loves the CD and she’s very picky, so I might reconsider. I am partial to Archie’s album being one of the better teen debuts in a long time, Idol or not. He has so much more versatility than even I expected. He’s not just ballad boy, that’s for sure.

  • soundscene

^^ What’s strange regarding his “ballad boy” designation from Idol, none of the true ballads on his CD are really singles. They’re beautiful, but pure AC that I don’t think Jive would release. David will be releasing midtempo pop-rock/R&B songs instead.

I would love a Jordin/David duet. They’re voices would really blend nicely together. They’ve both mentioned it now, so I’m assuming that Jive might try to make that happen.

  • IdolFanatic

David will be releasing midtempo pop-rock/R&B songs instead.

I would love it if they would release Works For Me as a single. That song is perfect for him and should be the direction they go with him next album IMO. It’s funky, soulful song that just “works for him” – LOL! Sorry I’m a dork! :)

  • john_socal

who is Jack Johnson. He’s #2 and I’ve never even heard of him? The top 10 albums just looks odd to me. The top 10 songs I can believe.

Jack Johnson is amazing. Well, this album, not so much. But his previous works are great. But he’s not very mainstream/commercial (at least not like John Mayer who always has his name out there), which is why I’m always very surprised at how well his albums do on the charts.

I think his most popular song would probably be “Better Together.”

  • hypertwink

    who is Jack Johnson.

    He’s awesome. :thumbup_tb:

I love Better Together and Hope.

  • FolkFan

If you listened to positive comments about Jason Castro this year, then you at least heard the name Jack Johnson, as that seemed to be the only artist our distinguished panel of judges could think of as a comparator for him. He’s a little hard to describe—subtle, laid-back music.

    Nice numbers for the everyone.

  • Trina

I think Jack Johnson had the 2nd highest selling digital album of the year so his placement there makes sense. He’s pretty awesome.

  • soundscene

iTunes album sales charts rarely line up with the total sales charts, so it’s not surprising that you would see more obscure albums making the top 100 (Jack Johnson is no slouch in the sales department, but he’s not selling like Kanye, either). I believe iTunes makes up about 17% of the album sale market, but not 17% of each artist’s sales. It just offers a lot more album choices than a physical store, so it’s a lot of albums selling only a few copies each, but that’s enough for iTunes to make up 17% of total album sales. Plus, some artists simply do better on iTunes than others. For some reason, John Legend does better on iTunes than a lot of artists that ultimately sell more each week. The Twilight soundtrack sells an abnormally large amount of albums on iTunes relative to their total sales. But then you have Beyonce that clearly doesn’t sell as well on iTunes as she does in physical stores.

  • sma11ie

The entire In Between Dreams album from Jack Johnson is pretty awesome, but “Sitting, Waiting and Wishing” is probably my favorite.

Across the Universe was a terrible movie and underperformed at the box office– the high placement of its soundtrack baffles me. The actors did a fine job singing some quintessential Beatles songs for the movie… but why would you buy their covers on a CD, outside the context of the movie, when you can buy the real Beatles songs?

Anyways, go Davids and Jordin. Hope to see lots of the Davids in the 2009 list :) .

  • oceana

Jack Johnson is great, I love his music, especially In Between Dreams. He sells well in stores too. I always see that cd at Target and Walmart.

    According to wikipedia, he is:

a Hawaii-born singer-songwriter, musician, filmmaker,[2] and surfer who has achieved commercial success and a dedicated following, after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001. He has since released four more albums and a number of EPs. His music is best described as acoustic/soft rock/vocal.

His father was a famous surfer. Jack was also a surfer until he had a bad accident, and while healing he wrote songs and played guitar. His songs have a unique Hawaiian beat that is so mellow. He’s really easy to listen to and his songs have meaningful lyrics too. Like “where have all the good people gone” …

p.s. It’s great to have both Davids on the charts. It doesn’t matter to me whose song was out longer or who is higher on the list or any of that. They both made the top song list, that is something to celebrate.

Were any other Idols on the list?

  • hardkandy

but why would you buy their covers on a CD, outside the context of the movie, when you can buy the real Beatles songs?

I guess for the same reason people bought the AI studio versions from the Beatles week, and the Mariah week, and so on. Personally for me, it’s always interesting to hear some covers, sometimes a different interpretation gives a different perspective to the song.

  • oceana

I like to hear different versions of songs, as long as they are worthy renditions with something new to contribute. Like DA’s Imagine on the show, or DC’s covers (I loved Maria Carey week). Jason’s Over the Rainbow was nice too, though it was a cover of that Hawaiian guy’s amazing version (he has a long name and I’m too busy to go look it up on my itunes).

The Beatles songs have been covered by hundreds of singers over the years. They wrote great songs that singers like to sing and people don’t tire of hearing.

Nice to see Jason Mraz on that list too. I don’t like that Leona Lewis song but I don’t like r&b or hiphop type music at all. I’m more into rock, alternative, folk, acoustic, and a wee bit of the new country.

  • hardkandy

I like to hear different versions of songs, as long as they are worthy renditions with something new to contribute.

Yeah for me most especially I like it when a guy covers a song that a girl originally sang and vice versa. It totally gives a whole new meaning to the song. I think that’s part of the reason why Mariah Carey week went over so well for the guys and flopped hard for the girls.

Because the actors did a fine job singing some quintessential Beatles songs. At least, that is why I bought the album (and I didn’t even get to see the movie). :)

If you have ever seen the animated movie “Curious George” which features the voices of Will Farrell and Drew Barrymore, then you know Jack Johnson, as he wrote the songs for the soundtrack…

Both Jason Castro and Jack Johnson have a similar vibe, and it is indeed a delightful one… :happy_tb:

Good Lord…Sara Bareilles is the #5 album…..GAG!!! Sorry to any of her fans here, but I saw her in concert about a month ago and was so freakin bored I left early. My friend and I both thought that all her songs sounded exactly the same. It was like listening to one long song for an hour….shudders!!! The best sounding song that was completely different was the cover of a Feist song she sang. Was not impressed AT ALL!!! well except for the time she told some idiot in the audience to FUCK OFF!!! LOL

  • FolkFan

I finally got a chance to look at the itunes Top 100 myself. As glad as I am to see Magic Rainbow at #58, I can’t say that I’m happy to see it bookended by Britney and Miley Cyrus. Doesn’t seem like the best company for a nice little Magic Rainbow.

  • RV65

“Was not impressed AT ALL!!! well except for the time she told some idiot in the audience to FUCK OFF!!! LOL”

she did this during her concert?…haha!
