Jordin’s Christmas song actually sounds better than Kelly’s.

  • suenigma

I love it – Jordin sounds exquisite. It is VERY reminiscent of Mariah’s iconic and perfect All I want for Christmas is You. Smart move.

  • jdanton2

Jordin sounds great on this . she has performed and recorded quite a few other Christmas songs over the years and hopefully someday will release an album of Christmas songs . her version of Do You Hear What I Hear ? last year was a top 10 song on AC radio.

While they both have, you should forgive the pun, a spectre of Phil Spector about the arrangements, it’s MoTown flavored – on Kelly’s single reminding me of the powerful pipes of Martha Reeves from the Vandellas – this track is more reminiscent of the Ronnettes. IMO.

It just depends which vibe a person prefers. IMO.

  • suenigma

Well said. I think that they are both excellent, and good point about the Phil Spector sound. Do you think it sounds like MC’s All I Want…?

  • Incipit

I don’t really know that song, or any of MC’s stuff but ABMB for obvious reasons, suenigma – so I went over to youtube and listened to it.

My impression of that was the arrangement owed less of a debt to the jazzy MoTown Wall of Sound and more to an earlier Rock & Roll vibe – especially from the tempo and the piano work – but I think it’s close enough for government work, KWIM?

Listen to them side by side – their song structures are almost identical. and Jordan definitely gets Mariahesque with her vocals.

Fantasia also has a song on this soundtrack doing What Christmas Means To Me.

  • Incipit

OK, that works. – I wasn’t there at the song structure – I was listening to the arrangements that gave each one their particular ‘vibe’. In historic progression, those two sounds and styles are back to back, so they would have give and take from each other, I think.

I’m hopeless when it comes to talking about Mariah’s vocals, you have the expertise; I’ll believe you. I only know one of her songs, and I don’t prefer her singing style, what I have heard of it.

The Christmas Music attributions are not surprising, IMO – there is a festive celebratory quality to the vibe of the music arrangements that they are sampling from that suits the season to a T – whether it’s R&R or MoTown.

Heh! While I accademicaly admire her vocal gifts I am distinctly not a fan of Mariah’s music, but ”All I Want” is a modern classic. Jordin and her team are wise to emulate it.

    From Wiki:

Critically, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has been lauded, with The New Yorker calling it “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon”.[1]The song became the nineteenth-best-selling digital single of the 20th century, the highest-charting entry by a female or holiday song on the list.[2] The Daily Telegraph hailed “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as the most popular and most played Christmas song of the decade in the United Kingdom.[3] Rolling Stone ranked it fourth on its Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs list, calling it a “holiday standard.”[4] With global sales of over 12 million copies, the song remains Carey’s biggest international hit, and one of the best-selling singles of all time.[5]

See now, this is great too! If we can’t have the Idol Charity Golf Tournament I want the Idol Charity Christmas Album.

  • heartly

Even better, both at the same time! haha

Jordin has a truly beautiful voice. Actually the song reminds me even more of the Vince Vance and the Valiants one that came out before MC’s with Lisa Layne.

  • Kariann Hart

I actually prefer Darlene Love and the Ronettes Christmas music. Jordin sounds nice but not exceptional, IMO.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Jordin sounds great on this Xmas song! A few Mariah-esque flourishes in there as well. Nice!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Thanks for posting that! Fantasia sounds terrific on this Xmas tune!

AIWFC also received a lot of exposure from the movie “Love Actually” (one of my favorite movies).

  • elliegrll

    Fantasia sounds amazing.

Darlene Love? She sounds like Mariah Carey to me.
