On the latest episode of the “American Nobody Show”, Michael Johns horrifies Jon Peter Lewis as he explains why he is a HUGE fan of the pointy pose!   Last year’s group numbers rocked so hard, ’cause Johns and Cook got it.

Fun fact: JPL knew Michael before he auditioned for Idol through his friend Sky Elobar.

Plus, Idol Recap in Crappy Pictures, more March Sadness, and MJ performs an acoustic version of “To Love Somebody”.

I actually really dig Jon’s weekly “show”. It’s entertaining and I like his personality. I think the editing is done well too.

  • majordude

@MJ – You added something to the site that is driving my Firefox (on a Mac) NUTS!!! It sounds like it is trying to play something (like a flash video or something) and then it locks up the browser for a few seconds and then a message comes up saying that something is making the browser unresponsive and do I want to stop the script (something about Flash). HELP!!!

  • leome

    That was entertaining.

I always like to know a bit more about idol’s BTS.
25 songs for 12 people… really, that sucks.

  • pj

The problem is with JPL’s vid. I am having issues, too. I will say that I’m rolling my eyes at him proclaiming himself a blue-eyed soul singer. Nice revisionist history, since he demanded to be taken seriously as a rocker and did that on tour. Hopefully, I’ll get to see more because I have the feeling there will be some snarkworthy moments if I can get this vid to play properly.

  • Victoria

^ PJ, it can’t be with JPL’s video. MJ didn’t embed it.

Majordude, it’s the video of Kara, I think.

I love JPL’s show. I didn’t watch his season but seems like a nice guy, very entertaining.

  • CSFan

I wonder why JPL hasn’t had anybody on from his season. I’d love it if he’d do a catch up segment with Diana or Matt or even Camile.

  • pj

Oh, well I had issues with JPL’s and I think he has too much going on with his site, but I finally made it through it.

I can’t believe he was complaining about not getting “Let it Be” when that’s the night he sang “Across The Universe.” One of his better performances. Dude, maybe that was a blessing in disguise. Know Thyself.

ETA: Anyone else get the feeling there was a little eye rolling on JPL’s part?

  • leome

ETA: Anyone else get the feeling there was a little eye rolling on JPLà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s part?

    LOL No, not just you!
Honestly, to hear Michael talking you’d think he’s the busiest guy out there, working with the best people out there, and that he’s super successful à   la Jen Hudson and poor guy was in the most complicated season evah and wasn’t lucky enough to pick the song from the hat.
    Michael is very entertaining.

  • annoula

I get what you guys are saying about Michael John’s personality and all…he was getting extremely annoying with the whole record company talk….it doesn’t matter how many times you say you’re lucky if every word in between is all rodomontade (sorry, I had to use that word once in my life).

However, “To Love Somebody” was all kinds of awesome for me. I want that mp3.

I’ve said it before, but I miss Season 7. It wasn’t just David Cook, it was everyone and everything. Paula was nuts, Simon was appropriately mean and not overly pimping anyone, Kara didn’t exist, the save didn’t exist, there were more entertaining group numbers, Ford commercials, results shows, everything. Hell, I’ll even take Kristy Lee Cook again if only the magic of Season 7 came back. It was even a time before Michael Johns left the show and apparently became a total a*hole. I want my time machine NOW.

  • cookcricket

Is “To Love Somebody” supposed to be on his album? Is it going to be acoustic?
    Loved it!!!
So here’s the funniest part of the whole thing for me; Sky, who introduced MJ to JPL snarks on Kris’s disco/acoustic song while MJ then performs “To Love Somebody” acoustically on the show! LOL!!!!! :lol_tb:

Loved Kris’s acoustic turn as well as MJ’s!!:)

I like MJ and try not rag on him too much, but he was so full of excuses (about past record deals and the show) on here. That’s okay Michael, if I can download your acoustic, “To Love Somebody”, I’ll overlook it.

Did I mention I liked MJ’s song at the end?

  • bubbles

Maybe I have to go back and watch that again, but I think Michael said that he didn’t go for Let It Be because he knew that it was going to be one that everyone was going to try for.

And yes, I am a Michael fan so maybe I don’t see everything objectively, but I just have to say maybe he is genuinely happy, maybe he does feel very lucky and maybe he does have a very busy schedule.
Oh, and I’m sure he knows that JPL and Sky have said some not so nice things about him in the past, and here’s JPL saying he was one of his favorites. Michael could have been doing a little eye rolling himself but if he did he kept it to himself.

  • lavender1960

Oh what a cool show and the Crappy Picture Recap was priceless. Reminded me of the days when SNL use to have funny animation on the show, reminded of the days when SNL was actually funny period. Except when Justin Timberlake drops by.

Gee that was a great rendition of To Love Somebody.

The whole issue of song choice is what really pisses me off about Idol, every time I hear Simon go on and on about song choice, you know the poor peeps had to choose from a pretty short list of songs, even when the theme is theoretically wide open so it is so disingenuous.

Didn’t Danny say he had to choose his 3rd or 4th choice one week? You’d think Idol has more clout or are there still a lot of song writers etc who do not want their songs in anyway associated with Idol or are they just too cheap?

I liked it better on Rockstar where the show managed to get a group of all great songs each week and the contestants had to barter for them. At least all the songs were great classics. Guess Mark Burnett has more friends in higher places.

  • SpenserJ

too. I will say that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m rolling my eyes at him proclaiming himself a blue-eyed soul singer. Nice revisionist history, since he demanded to be taken seriously as a rocker and did that on tour.

Okay, so you’ve basically covered all of the salient points here PJ :)

Seriously, Michael’s got talent. I don’t understand the need for all of the rationalizations, explanations and flat out excuses.

  • NOLA

I will trade you two Taylor Hicks and one Adam Lambert for Michael Johns.

  • jan

That was a very interesting interview. I love knowing that Michael & David starting changing up the dances and then that the others joined in. I will now have to rewatch all the group numbers.

  • majordude

@Victoria (& mj) – You might be right. That sound I hear (before things lock up) is from that video which seems to want to play on load instead of on click.

  • lavender1960

I do remember David Cook bursting out in laughter or barely containing himself on a number of occasions. Oh and Castro rolling his eyes a lot. The chest bump was legendary. Can you imagine if they threw in the lip synching too?

Can I say I abhor the lip synching or at least lip synching done so poorly? I guess I have to excuse it for the Paula dance number but…

I would add that for some reason Canadian Idol manages to put together group numbers that are not cheesy nor lip synched. I was pleased to find out a hometown boy is the choreographer/arranger. Maybe AI should steal him.

  • pj

Indeed. He has a ton of talent. He should let it speak for itself. Not constantly cry foul. Everyone in his season had to deal with the same stuff he did and he went out 8.

ETA: Nola, I’d keep Johnsy over Hicks, but not Lambert.

  • NOLA

yeah pj; but Lambert would be like kissin’ your sister

  • pj

Nola, I don’t need Lambert to kiss me. We can shop, gossip and go to the spa. :-) I think I’d rather spend 24/7 with him over Johnsy.

  • heart2

Michael love ya..don’t evha change. Nola..totally agree.

  • Chipmunk

I want my time machine NOW.

I think Micheal Johns can lend you his…if he can get out of 2008, that is

I enjoyed the interview (as I do with most things Michael Johns). To be fair about Michael making a complaint re: song choice JPL asked him his least fav thing about Idol and he answered the question. Not seeing a problem there. It’s actually interesting to hear they only had 25 songs to choose from, I guess Paul McCartney was pretty cautious when he let them have their music for 2 nights (oh, and why did they do a second night?).

I guess I should have known MJ and Cook revised the dance routines–no way that chest bump was in there originally! Oh season 7, how I miss you.

  • t2

I love that Michael is so loving of all things idol, even after the judges Jeckyll and Hide’d him out of the competition (IMO). He’s fond of everything except for the limited number of songs to choose from. Gotta love a guy who embraces the cheese and is thankful for every blessing.

    And that voice…sigh…thud!

  • ettacandy

Said it before and say it again: love JPL. I just didn’t get him when he was on Idol, but his music is among my favorite post-Idol stuff. And, he is freaking hilarious…. the Idol Recap in Crappy Pictures is just awesome.

I liked Michael Johns on Idol but lately… not so much. Seems full of himself, to me. But: “he can really sing!” (God help me, it’s a Randy reference!) I do enjoy Michael’s acoustic take on “To Love Somebody.”

  • TwigLA

    For Majordude:

I’m also on a Mac, but I use the Safari browser (for Mozilla/Firefox dependent sites, I use Camino).
I had no trouble with MJs site or the Nightline Interviews. However, my Activity monitor for Safari shows that something using Flashplayer didn’t load. It caused no slowdown or stoppage, and I had no trouble watching the videos other than having to refresh the page due to a timeout on the embedded DailyMotion.

Make sure you have the latest Flashplayer plugin. Also make sure you Repair Permissions using Disk Utility.

ETA: Anyone else get the feeling there was a little eye rolling on JPLà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s part?

Oh yeah. And JPL seems to like MJ, too! MJ seems like a great guy– he just has a knack for coming off really egotistical in interviews. Reminds me of Scott’s Idolatry– a little painfully self-absorbed, unfortunately. I had no problems with what he said, just something about how he says everything– did y’all notice JPL couldn’t get a word in edgewise? He just went on and on and on… Gah!

I’m glad he confirmed that he and DC went “off-script” on some of those group numbers. I always suspected. I complain about MJ in interviews, but it’s clear he was the life of the party in Season 7, and I do think their energy got zapped after he left. The group numbers after Top 8 got noticeably worse.

  • sunchick

I assume that’s JPL’s voice immitating the contestants in the Crappy Pictures segment? He’s pretty good at that, heh.

rodomontade (sorry, I had to use that word once in my life).

Ha ha ha. You know, I don’t sweat a lil rodomontade when it comes with a sexy Australian accent. Shallow, yes, but that’s how I roll. Honestly, though, humility is nice, but it’s not the be all end all.

Either Michael is the mayor of Excuseville, or he really did have some shit bad luck. Probably a combo of both. Ryan Star, the dude touring with Cook, has commented on the way his band was signed to Maverick and then promptly ignored because of a big behind the scenes upheaval with the uppity ups, so that’s not the first time I’ve heard that kind of thing about Maverick during that time period. Interesting stuff, really. The ego could be a bit of a defense mechanism cuz the music business comes with it’s fair share of bad breaks and rejection. He doesn’t know when to shut up sometimes, but I will give him props for plugging away at the dream like the little Aussie who could, and leave it at that.

The whole issue of song choice is what really pisses me off about Idol, every time I hear Simon go on and on about song choice, you know the poor peeps had to choose from a pretty short list of songs, even when the theme is theoretically wide open so it is so disingenuous.

Word. It’s been painfully obvious this season especially that the wide open themes aren’t as wide open as AI might have the public believe. Too many of the same ol AI standards popping up to be coincidental. The song selection segments were always the best part about the reality show portion of RS. And yeah, the songs were just better, period. Although I don’t think I’d trust the AI band to tackle the stuff the RS Houseband could tackle, like Nirvana and Pink Floyd.

  • I want pizza

I watched that and didnt find anything wrong, thought he and JPL made for a really nice interview. Reading now other’s interpretations now I guess you could see MJ’s comments in a negative way, but its reaching a little, IMO.

Like the Jennifer Hudson reference, I didnt see it as in “Im as successful as Jennifer Hudson” but as “example of people voted out early who still made it big time”. This whole interpreting other people’s statements thing is very subjective. Then again, I like Michael and always have so you could chalk up my not being bothered to fangirliness….I do agree the guy has no filter tho, heh

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I agree MJ talks a little too much most of the time. Good thing I love that accent. I’d rather he sang more, though, of course. He just made me like To Love Somebody again.

Please keep your opinions focused on the subject. Don’t make judgments on or criticize your fellow posters opinions.

  • MJfan

To love somebody was awesome. Michael is another Idol that you either get or you don’t, there is no middle ground. I like his snarky comments.

  • I want pizza

^^ Ok sorry, my bad. Heheh :)

  • lavender1960

Word sunchick. The Rockstar House Band – the best house band EVER assembled for TV.

I miss those guys so much. Nate, Sascha, Raf, Jimmy, Paul sniff. People have written to Burnett to have a Rockstar season featuring the house band and they pick a lead singer to form a bona fide band. Bwah.

I will say however that the AI band has kicked it up a notch over the past few seasons but….

  • flyaway

If you visit michaeljohnsonline.com you’ll find he has been constantly busy starting with the David Foster show in Las Vegas between getting voted off and touring. He’s been in Manila and Australia, done mini concerts at car races, polo games, Ellen’s birthday party, done the soundtrack for a dvd, released a Christmas cut and a duet with Brooke and is releasing his first cd next month. I think he’s earned the right to brag a bit.

No, he’s not Archie with the whole “meek, mild, gee you really like me?” persona. He obviously didn’t like the AI bullshit – even mentions his wife is the one who begged him to audition. I think he comes across as a guy’s guy and the interview had the tone of sitting at a bar, sharing a couple of beers and telling tales about the office (in this case previous AI seasons).

edit: please don’t tell posters what to do

  • BootStar

Aw, he wouldn’t be Michael without the swagger and sexy foot planted squarely in his big ol’ mouth now and then. I find his frankness refreshing even if I do cringe a bit after some of his comments.

The whole issue of song choice is what really pisses me off about Idol, every time I hear Simon go on and on about song choice, you know the poor peeps had to choose from a pretty short list of songs, even when the theme is theoretically wide open so it is so disingenuous.

Just once I wish a contestant would respond:

“Simon, with all due respect, I know you know how this show works, so you know we only got to choose from a short list of shitty songs.”

JPL’s “recaps” are hilarious. I always LOL.

  • 2dogs

Man, did I love that acoustic rendition of To Love Somebody. Really loved the guitar playing as well. Whatever the process was, and whose ever “fault” it was, I’m glad Michael moved off of the arena rock he was prone to on Idol and is embracing his soulful bluesy side. This is a great sound for him and I hope he finds success with it.

  • RealLifeRed

Hi, I am new to this blog. Just wondering: has anyone noticed lately that Michael is not wearing his wedding ring in his latest pics – don’t see one in this pic and didn’t see one on Idolotry (sp?) or on Jillian’s show. He also said in one of his interviews that one of his songs “Goodbye”, was written by him during a personal situation. What gives?

  • weareallinnocent

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m glad Michael moved off of the arena rock he was prone to on Idol and is embracing his soulful bluesy side.

MJ – oops, sorry about the bossiness. How ’bout I reword that to “the michaeljohnsonline site verifys he’s been busy”? :laughing_tb:

  • heart2

RealLifeRed….No worries everything between Michael and his wife are good. She attends almost every event with him (I’ve seen the Pic’s). Michael has stated “sometimes he wears it sometimes he doesn’t..Who Cares”. IMO… I think he just doesn’t like to wear jewelery of any sort. I know his fans have sent him all kinds of braclets, necklaces and etc.. he never has worn any of them. But, he wears the T-shirts..hahaha!

  • heart2

Oh, yah..I do believe that “goodbye” was written before him and his wife were even married. Not sure but next time I message him I will ask.

  • oceana

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve said it before, but I miss Season 7. It wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just David Cook, it was everyone and everything.

Oh God, so true, so true. Me too.

  • bean99

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe he was complaining about not getting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Let it Beà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ when thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the night he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Across The Universe.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ One of his better performances. Dude, maybe that was a blessing in disguise. Know Thyself.

I loved that one but Simon and Randy called it boring. I think that was the beginning of the end for him.

I thought it was a pretty good interview. I think Michael treated it more as talking to a fellow idol than an interview. I have a feeling that it may be the Australian way to be frank and confident instead of worrying about modesty, lol. I wasn’t bothered in the least and don’t feel he was bragging although think he probably does consider himself very lucky to get another chance which at his age is pretty cool. caveat is I’m much older than Michael but am talking about in the business.

  • undercooked

PJ, I’m right with you on this. I would take Adam 24/7 as well over MJ. I think Adam has lots of interesting opinions on varying subjects and a good sense of humor . I think he would be alot of fun to get to know.

  • RealLifeRed

HEART2: Thanks for replying so promptly! Glad to know “Life is Okay” (!!) with Michael and Stacey. My daughter and I are huge Michael Johns fans and she showed me a website, TMZ, back last November, which had a disturbing video of Michael. Don’t know if you or anyone posting on this blog saw that video (or discussed it here), but TMZ caught up with Michael and 2 “ladies”, with a bottle hidden in his jacket, getting into a large SUV. Michael looked like a deer caught in the headlights and was visibly upset. He actually got into the back seat with one of the girls, while trying to cover his tracks with the TMZ photographer.

My daughter and I are both hoping that he has cleaned up his act and is acting honorably these days and that his marriage survived the incident. He is so talented and his voice is so distinctive and soulful, that we would hate to see him do anything to ruin his career or marriage. Sudden fame can bring even the best intentioned men down; we just don’t want it to happen to Michael. Glad you are on the inside track and know for sure that he is still happily married. by the way, how do you know for sure?

  • heart2

RealLifeRed..Well TMZ has away of making people look like there up to no good when thier not. But, as I remember it there were five people..the three guy and the 2 girls. Looked to me like Michael was getting a lift home from the two guys..they hardly could all pile in the front seat..LOL. Look to me like it was five friends out for dinner and few cocktails after work..and TMZ jumps out of the bushes. How do i know..well if you follow MJO you will see that Stacey is at most all of Michaels gigs..and fans have actually sat and spoke with her. She also gives them a little scoop once in awhile. I’m sure if Michael was up to no good he wouldn’t be parading it up main street in LA.
