David Cook’s bass player, Joey Clement, is leaving David’s band.   There is no permanent replacement yet. Via DCO:

First off, we are sad to announce that Joey will no longer be playing bass for us. We are certainly sad to see him go, and wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to his next musical endeavor. Our good friend, Monty Anderson, will be filling in for the immediate future while we attempt, amidst the shows ahead, to find a permanent, viable replacement.

Well, I hope everyone split up on good terms! I not, I want to know what happened. Heh.

Also, David Cook, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen will be performing on August 7th in Central Park in NYC, as part of the ABC Good Morning America Summer Concert Series.

I think it’s Clement Mj, Joey Clement.

  • hypertwink

    MJ, it’s Joey Clement. :smile1_tb:

    Who is Joey Barnes?

  • lamslova

They become like a family. Im sure its got to be hard on them to see a band member leave.

“Also, David Cook, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen will be performing on August 7th in Central Park in NYC, as part of the ABC Good Morning America Summer Concert Series.”

    WOOHOO to this, Im going!

  • GeminiDolly

Joey Barnes is the hot drummer from Daughtry.

  • sma11ie

Suffice it to say, I’m a tad bummed because yeah, I’m a little attached. I understand this stuff happens, but nonetheless feel a bit blindsided precisely because I saw so much evidence of Joey being such an integral part of the group, both on stage and off (PorkBeans, playing baseball with DC, etc.). I know there’s good reason for this, and DC’s blog was perfect as always, but it’s still sad. I hope the guys all the best. I’m a little worried that DC has to find a replacement amidst his crazy schedule, but I trust that they will find someone great, cuz c’mon it’s DC and he’s always been great at surrounding himself with good people. End rant/

  • Fergie

Joey Barnes ? Ha Ha. The bass player never gets the glory. Check out the movie Spinal Tap. I’m glad David addressed this so some of the drama queens in the fandom can move on and all the speculating can end. I’m sure now those same OTT fans will want to know all the details. It seems like Joey opted to leave the band and I would be shocked if there were any hard feelings. Without David I never would have heard of Joey . I wish him luck but I don’t think I’ll be following his career. I spend way too much time keeping up with David. lol

  • Pam

awwwww I gotta admit I’m going to miss Joey and that I’m a bit surprised by this news. He will be missed but things do happen for a reason and hopefully Monty will be a good fit till David can find a good replacement.

  • happycamper

    MJ, it’s Joey Clement. Heh.

From what I understand Monty played on Analog Heart. I think he has a history with David and is someone David can rely on in a pinch. I wish all parties well. I have faith that David will find a new band member that will be a good fit.

  • wellhesback

I’ll miss seeing Joey CLEMENT at my David Cook concerts (I’m been lucky enough to go to two) and miss seeing him in the youtube videos – but I wish him all the best. Meanwhile I’ll be watching & listening to DC and those other extremely talented guys in his band & reading MJs every day looking for news about them.

  • aga

I’m glad David addressed this so some of the drama queens in the fandom can move on and all the speculating can end.

Same here. I am David Cook’s fan and I support David Cook 100%. I am not attached to any of his band members. My focus is on David Cook only.

A Couple of Short Joey Vids. (Am deleting my post on the golf thread and moving it here.)

Someone on DCO started to analyze this Joey clip from 7/24/09:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RnqJqMxWpY&feature=channel

Don’t know if it means anything. The whole mystery has become almost amusing.

ETA: To balance the video above, here’s Joey clapping during Come Back To Me during his last performance with Cook and band on Saturday:

Thanks for answering my question, GeminiDolly!

I, too, have a feeling it was Joey’s decision to go. David uses the word “sad” twice in his blog. He didn’t have to. I love the tone of his announcement. Joey has been a part of David’s life ever since his record came out. So, it’s but natural for him to be sad, and it’s cool he acknowledges this.

  • cookcricket

This sad news indeed. I hope it’s on good terms. This type of thing happens to everyone at some point. But still sad and a little shocking. I haven’t visited DCO in forever, but still keep up with DC things right here at mjs. I wish Joey the best.

  • SashaB

David’s a class act. I’m not surprised he’d address this.

Well, it’s a little weird that a Joey would leave in the midst of tour. Oh well. Best of luck to Joey.

Thankfully David’s friend Monty was available and good enough to step in. Monty played last night in Delaware, and by all accounts, it was a fabulous show. Hope they will find a good bass player quickly.

  • HappyDaisy

According to Terry, The Blue Light Tech, Joey Barnes is the bass player who used to work with Dale Cook. :)

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I would have gotten them mixed up, too. They are both band members in kinda generic rock bands. Which Joey is the one who likes to take drinks from fans?

  • skippy

I am not a Cook fan, but it’s common for band members to change. Especially early on. Maybe Joey didn’t like being nameless, since David is the artist and not known as a band. Or maybe he likes the quiet life and doesn’t want to be in the spotlight. Many different reasons.

  • Sydia

I hope they left on good terms, however, count me in as one who is not too attached to the band members. I love the fact that Andy and Neal are in the band because they are people that Cook has worked with and trusted for a while.

  • hollygo9

Joey wasn’t the hot drummer, right? It’s Kyle…right?

Joey Barnes will be very surprised to learn that he’s the bass player for David Cook AND leaving his band. LOL.

Hee. You are too funny mj.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Actually, Daughtry had a personnel change early on too. Very early on–in the first couple of months of the bands first tour.

  • Trina

When all is said and done I’m glad it was a friend he’s known for a long time that was able to step in. The whole situation has got to be stressful enough but RCA and or/19 could have stuck in some quicky replacement. At least a familiar friend should help make the temporary transition a bit easier. Everytime I look a new tour date pops up. It’s really a grueling schedule. Maybe Joey just got burnt out.

  • skippy

Yeah Brian is a much better fit for Daughtry than Jeremy was. ^^ Jeremy quit early on. I think he was sorta shy and not ready for the limelight. That happens sometimes. Most bands have had changes at one point of another. There is probably no big meaning behind it.

  • EmmaJK

Aw, I’ll miss Joey. I’m not overly attached to any of the band members, but Joey was my favorite, if only because he seemed to be as goofy as David, and the most willing to be silly onstage. Neal and Andy just look at him like he’s from another planet when he tries to engage them in the banter.

The blog certainly has some lines to read between. Trying to find a bass player in the midst of a tour seems – I don’t know, seems a bit sudden and unplanned.

Glad he has Monty, a long-time friend, to count on. Yay for him for stepping in. Simon was oh so wrong when he said friends never want the best for you. He doesn’t know David’s friends.

Obscure David Cook reference ahead -

    – is this the same Monty who was pining for Scandaliers (from the unreleased album)? Oh Monty – I’m pining for Scandaliers, too.

And LOL and David calling us kiddos – I haven’t been called kiddo for a very long time.

  • Matt

Like I said in the Golphin’ Dave thread, I’ll definitely miss Joey. I really thought his personality meshed really well with David’s and the rest of the band. I’ll echo the sentiments hoping the terms were good.

I’m a tiny bit depressed, but Dave-and-Band will be just fine. Now had Neal left, then I’d be stressed.

Can’t wait for the GMA performance(s) from David and Kris / Adam. Why do I have a funny feeling that thread will be chaos?

  • 123abc456

It really sucks that Joey decided to leave mid tour. I wish him well but his timing stinks. I am glad that David had Monty to step in cause that would be a daunting task for anyone. They have tons of dates coming up. I hope Monty is up to it.

  • wellhesback

These interesting little twitters relating to Cookie’s cancer charity work were mentioned in the golf DC thread. Not completely unrelated, since its DC related.
    From twitter:
    @Steve Case
Just had dinner in DC with Amer. Idol David Cook. He, like me, lost his brother to brain cancer, and wants to find a cure. http://abc2.org

@chrisgrundner: Had the pleasure of meeting Idol winner, David Cook, at the State Fair http://www.khgfoundation.org/davidcook
    . .

  • CathyMK

I’ll miss Joey, he’s so much fun, besides being a great bass player. Isn’t he married? Maybe he wanted to spend more time at home and got tired of the grueling tour schedule. After all, the Declaration Tour has been extended and extended again.

Wonder how they’ll fit auditions and rehearsing with a new guy into the schedule.

  • Laurie

HappyDaisy – your post above is hilarious! That is exactly what Terry would say! On a more serious note, I am first and foremost a David Cook fan, but I am sorry to see Joey go. I just saw the guys in WI and the band was on fire. They are really tight as a band and in perfect sync when performing. Joey did an amazing jump/twirl onstage that was pretty darn entertaining to watch. I am now so happy to have seen that live. I wish him well and I am certain David and the band will continue to give great concerts.

  • noctem seizure

He seemed like a good guy, and his bass provided a solid backbone to the band, but, honestly, he was the most disposable member. Kyle and Neal (especially) have amazing chops, and as for Andy– well, a stage-ready guitarrist/ keyboardist/ backup vocalist isn’t always the easiest combo to find. And it’s even harder to find an individual like that who is also a longtime friend.

  • Matt

Oh, I’m also going to miss the ROCK! KICK!

  • Keel

I will really miss Joey. For some reason, he and Neal were the ones in the band I really grew attached to. Neal, primarily because I feel I got to know him through his songwriting on MWK and Joey, because of his awesome, funny, ridiculous, joyous, awkward rock moves and the support he gave David on stage by being just as goofy and ridiculous as the band’s peerless and fearless leader. If there were personality clashes with David, you certainly wouldn’t get it from the concert videos and IIRC Andrew tweeted about Joey attending a Cook family BBQ during the band’s June break. Still, it seems odd that Joey would be leaving of his own accord because actually making David’s band seemed like a big step up for him (in terms of exposure on the national stage, TV appearances and size of crowds). Hard see him walking away from that. The “moving on” to other opportunities seems fairly generic to me. Wonder if there was a clash with other members of the band.

  • Grammie Kari

It is going to be packed on August 7th Central Park in NYC. WOW.

Did anyone think, “Why isn’t Archie included in this concert”?

  • hypertwink

If Adam and Kris are being managed by 19, you have your answer.

ETA: Hmmm, isn’t Archie being managed by 19 too? Fail. Probably tour?

  • daenarys

Joey’s fun personality will be missed. From the start right up to his last concert date at Monticello, he was hyping up the fans, leading the claps and the whoa2xs. I notice that he’s been in a lot of bands. Wish him all the best!

Actually, giving Joey exclusive face time in the last Pork Beans (Eppy 6) starts to make a LOT of sense now. I remember a lot of peeps were taken aback / miffed by David’s “absence” but showing us goofy funny Joey was absolutely genius.

Also, I don’t think there’s anything unusual about losing a player mid-tour because this tour is becoming like the Great Wall of China – when/where does it end?! LOL. When they started out in Feb, they were supposed to finnish in May, then in August, then David said October, now it’s all the way to the end of the year (from a Spring College tour it’s become the SpringSummerAutumnWinter tour!). Who knows what the deal was at the beginning and what plans / commitments they all may have had. Until David actually names a band, the only member that would really hurt me to see go permanently would be Neal. He’s David’s right arm.

But yeah, David has a way of making everyone family. So of course, anyone leaving is a bummer (Apparently Javi’s place is taken up by new soundguy – the one whose soundbooth he checked out when he jumped off the stage at Mystic Lake!).

Parm said it: “patience, grasshoppers”. LOL.

  • daenarys

Joey’s latest Facebook message: “Joey Clement: is feeling great. Thankyou!!!!!” The exclamation marks amuse me no end.

And we know David is as upbeat and funny as usual in the Delaware vids. So, whew!

On a different note: did y’all know Monty played bass on Analog Heart? We might start getting Silver *excited*, or Porcelain *flails*, or….Let Go *ded*

  • Hazehel

I like Joey, so it’s kinda sad to see him go, although bands’ members do come and go all the time, it would be more unusual to have a band where the band lineup never changes. It appears to be a decision by Joey to leave, and since Pork Beans ep 6 in retrospect looks to be tribute to him by the rest of the band, the decision to split is likely to be amicable. Perhaps Joey finds the tour schedule too tough (I must say David’s tour schedule is unusually tightly packed), or he has ambition in other directions (David Cook himself played bass for MWK before he decided he wanted to go solo), or he got another offer more suited to his own music. We won’t really know unless more is revealed.

The only person who is indispensible to David at the moment is Neal, and they look to have a very close friendship for any split between them to happen. But I have to say the band is sounding more like a proper band now – at the beginning they do sounded rather ropey, like they have been thrown together at the last minute (which is more or less what happened). I agree with noctem that Joey is the most disposable one (there isn’t any noticeable difference in the sound of the band so far with Monty), but it takes time for a band to gel, so it wouldn’t be good for any other member to leave, certainly not for the time being.

  • oceana

On a different note: did y’all know Monty played bass on Analog Heart? We might start getting Silver *excited*, or Porcelain *flails*, or’ ¦.Let Go *ded*

I like that thought! That would be great.

By the way, David Cook will also be on Kelly & Regis the same day, August 7. That show is 6-8 blocks away from GMA apparently, so the logistics will be interesting of doing both shows on the same day.

  • SarahBeth

On a different note: did y’all know Monty played bass on Analog Heart? We might start getting Silver *excited*, or Porcelain *flails*, or’ ¦.Let Go *ded*

OMG, I hope so. I’d die if he sang Let Go. Because damn. I love that song. We were lucky enough in Nhampton to get part of Silver, but the whole thing would be fabulous….(Yes, I died, even with just the first verse and chorus)

I’m sad about Joey, but I’m glad that something was said by David because the speculation was getting ridiculous. I mean, I think there’s going to be speculation from now until the end of time as to why….I don’t think its any of our business. Seeing the boys on Sat, very excited! :)

  • Trina

The GMA thing smacks of 19E cross promoting 3 Idols they manage who all happened to be in the area for concerts anyway. Archie isn’t managed by 19.

  • http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=iamthepurplewalrus&view=videos purplesmile

Sad about this. Joey is my favorite of the EEB. :(

(He has the prettiest pedal board.)

  • waffle

HappyDaisy, thanks for those clips! They were quite interesting. But, to be honest, what I most enjoyed about those snippets was hearing David’s rich vocals on them. I will never tire of that voice! His voice is what makes the band for me, so sad that I am that Joey’s gone, I’m still looking forward to my first live show of his in six weeks. Yes, I got my wish for an LA or San Francisco tour date, and I am taking it! :) (Hmmm, I wonder if there’ll be a new bass player by then.)

  • BootStar

Aw, I’m sad about Joey too, but I suspect he’ll be just fine, as will David and the rest of the band. It’s possible Joey got an offer he couldn’t refuse, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds for him (if anybody remembers him).

In any event, I’m glad I got to see Joey during his short tenure, but I will be very surprised if there’s any noticeable difference in the band’s sound with Monty. I’m going to see David on Friday here in Philly and will let you know!

Re the GMA performance on the 7th, I hope they have the SWAT teams in place because Adam and David both have some truly crazy fans. Does anybody know if Adam and Kris are sharing back-up musicians or if they’ll have their own working bands?

  • JohnM

I’m very sad that Joey’s leaving. As a bass player myself (not a very good one), I really enjoyed his melodic playing style (when the mix was good enough that I could actually hear him!) and was looking forward to hearing his work on the next album. I would like to hear what he does next.

  • Lisa

Unless I am remembering wrong, wasn’t it said somewhere right from the start that Joey would not be a *perm* part of the band? So this comes as no surprise to me.

Isn’t he also the same one that tried to launch a cd before joining the band? Maybe he is heading off to do more on that front.

  • Hazehel

Unless I am remembering wrong, wasn’t it said somewhere right from the start that Joey would not be a *perm* part of the band? So this comes as no surprise to me.

The surprise comes from the fact that he left in the middle of a very tightly scheduled tour, and that there had been no indication he would leave until he did. Just seem a little odd that it should happen that way.

  • sunchick

Awww, Joey. Cleary what we have here is a case of follicular envy gone wild.

I keed. Anyway, I got to witness his very first documented ROCK!KICK! with the EEB. At an acoustic show no less. Ah yes, I remember it well. He sprung up from his stool without warning. Dave turned laughing and said, “Did you just…. kick?” And a legend was born. Que sera sera. David’s tour schedule is crazy and the extended bus living is not for everyone, I imagine. I kinda wonder if David is at the point where he wants to nail down something longterm and permanent and official, band contract wise, what with talk of the next album and such. Maybe for whatever reason, Joey couldn’t commit. Someone on DCO noticed that Neal, Andy, and Kyle were added to the top friends on David’s official MySpace recently which may or may no be coincidental. Whatevs. I will never again look at the color purple and not think of Joey, that’s for sure.

Okay, enough of the melodramatic shizz. This…

Obscure David Cook reference ahead -

    - is this the same Monty who was pining for Scandaliers (from the unreleased album)? Oh Monty – I’m pining for Scandaliers, too.

cracked me the hell up, because I thought the exact. same. thing. For some weird reason, “Monty is pining for Scandeliers” is stuck in the recesses of mah brainz. If the addition of Monty means more pre-Idol Dave tunage added to the setlist, he’s my new favorite band member who isn’t David. (Wishful thinking…)

  • oceana

Actually, Daughtry had a personnel change early on too. Very early on’“in the first couple of months of the bands first tour.

This band started touring in February, this is July, 5 or 6 months, so it was pretty early too, maybe not quite as early as Daughtry.
