Jennifer Hudson just landed what looks to be another plum movie role, as the lead in a Winnie Mandela bio-pic. via Variety:

Jennifer Hudson is set to star in ‘Winnie,’ a drama that casts her as the former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela.

Hudson will play Winnie Mandela in a film that begins production May 30 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Capt Town, Transkei and Robben Island, where the future president spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

‘Winnie’ will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, the veteran South African filmmaker whose 2006 film ‘Yesterday’ was Africa’s Best Foreign Film nominee, and who also directed ‘Cry, The Beloved Country,’ and ‘Sarafina!’

Andre Pieterse, Roodt and Paul L. Johnson wrote a script based on the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob biography ‘Winnie Mandela:A Life.’ Picture is being made with South African and Canadian money, with Pieterse producing with Michael Mosca of Canada’s Equinoxe Films.

‘I was compelled and moved when I read the script,’ Hudson said. ‘Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.’

LOL I read the headline and I’m like WTF why would she act in Winnie the Pooh? Thanks for the accidental laugh.

Did Winnie sing? JK. Jennifer will perform to expectations.

I smell another award sweep for Jenn. So proud of her to keep finding sucess. Can’t wait to see this. Her acting exceeds beyond singing roles such as The Secret Life Of Bees and Sex and The City. She will do really great I’m sure.

Wow. Totally another Emmy worthy role. I hope she kills it!Winnie Mandela is such a controversial figure. I just hope they don’t gloss over all of that.

Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her

This makes me sad. I think Jennifer is fantastic, but it seems she’s unaware of Winnie’s true character. Winnie is an evil bitch, and I don’t use the word evil lightly. I know firsthand of someone she killed (her thugs did the actual killing) and what it did to his family. She is an embarrasment to South Africa. Why do you think Nelson divorced her? I’m willing to give the film a chance. You never know, they may portray her accurately. But I suspect it won’t be very impartial… and will make her out to be the victim. Yes, I know she was tortured in jail, and I’m not making light of that fact or in ANY way excusing apartheid. But what she’s done since she got out of jail is disgusting. Evil woman.

Can’t ETA. I wonder if they’ll bring up all the fraud charges she was convicted of. Or the killing of a 12 year old boy that she was convicted of (I forget if it was murder or manslaughter, sorry, a little fuzzy on the details, it’s been a while)…

She’s never done a day in jail for those charges.

Jennifer Hudson that is a plum role for her to do and boy after “DReamGirls” her career skyrocketed…

LoveContinuum-thanks for the information did not know that side of her..I have a feeling the picture will not cover it.What happened in“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” the newsguy had the truth or the legend myth and took the latter .

This is a great opportunity for Jennifer. I know she’ll do it justice. Plus, I think its her first lead role??

  • SharB

@JMS, funny I was thinking the same thing.

It will be interesting to see how Winnie Mandela is portrayed in the film. Jennifer’s portrayal will be great. I’m happy for her. She is definitely taking steps to further her career. I wish continued success for her & the family.

  • Mtlfan

    I loved her in Dreamgirls.
I’m sure she’ll do great in this new role; that girl can act!

  • houstonrufus

    Wow, go Jennifer. Great role!

  • SybilTrelawney

Congratulations, Jennifer! What a fantastic role to land. You go, girl!

  • revcat

Wow, it will be interesting to see how Winnie is portrayed as I too was under the impression that she is a very bad apple. I hope the movie doesn’t whitewash her transgressions.

  • CathyMK

Wow, good for her! That’s a high profile role to have as her first lead.

    Totally another Emmy worthy role.

Is a feature film or a TV movie? I didn’t see anything referring to it being for TV. So, it’s an Oscar worthy role!

  • smartcookie

The book it’s based on attempts to tell the whole story, based on the Amazon description:

Finally, the book investigates the events that have made Winnie Mandela such a controversial figure: the allegations of kidnapping and murder, her divorce from Mandela, and the current fraud charges.

No way to know what the movie will do, but it would seem very strange (and not in the least Oscar-worthy) to leave off the end of the story of a bio-pic. So let’s hope they do it right and include the good and the bad. If nothing else, it gives Jennifer more to play.

Winnie is an evil bitch, and I don’t use the word evil lightly. I know firsthand of someone she killed (her thugs did the actual killing) and what it did to his family. She is an embarrasment to South Africa.

This is why it’s a very ambitious part — Winnie M. is not a simplistic character. She was truly a partner with Mandela in the early years of their marriage, and worked hard against apartheid.

But she did become a murderous power-monger — and, in context, in a country in the throes of an essential but very bloody and difficult evolution.

No filmmakers of any consequence would make a simple good/evil portrait of Mandela. Her deeds, for good and ill, are far too famous — not just in Africa, but around the world. South African Darrell J. Roodt is a very fine movie director — rent his “Serafina!” and you’ll hear fantastic music, and see a great story…..

  • dreyraglin

I see this film as telling the whole story. The full article itself if you click the link says it’s gonna tell the good and the bad. I don’t see them doing a whole movie about it and not telling the whole story. Jennifer is smart when picking what she portrays and I’m sure it will be the whole story and nothng far from the truth. It will be a feature film not a Tv movive so yes she could definitley get more Oscar buzz and other awards

  • iluvai

I bet Jennifer will be fantastic in this role. She is an awesome actress.

  • Lea

I can not wait to see this, I’m sure Jenn will do an amazing job..
