On the next episode of Smash, airing February 19, Jennifer Hudson’s character, Ronnie Moore, belts out an impressive rendition  ”Home” from the stage classic The Wiz.

Will the Tony winning Broadway star be joining the production Derrick was directing? (Or maybe still is. DUN DUN DUN). We’ll find out on Tuesday when Smash returns to NBC at 9 pm.

Well, she’s too old to play Dorothy….maybe one of the witches?

Certain songs were written to be sung in certain ways.  This song + Jennifer were made for each other.  Anyone who remembers the show or movie (Diana!), should agree that she does it justice.  My kind of song!

Well, Diana Ross was 33 years old and supposedly playing a 24 year old, when she made the movie. The original Broadway production of The Wiz starred a 15 year old Stephanie Mills.

    Stageagent.com lists the age-range for the part at 15 – 24.

Hudson is 31. The question, if this were a real run on Broadway, would be could she reasonably play 24 onstage?

If there was an episode this week, I guessed I missed it…so I have a feeling Ill give up on this sh ow and the network will probably soonly follow.

The clip above doesn’t play.  Melinda Doolittle sang this song on Idol (2005).  She put a lot into it and had Paula crying, but it’s a typical boring Broadway song that did not promote her cause.

There was not an episode this week, as per MJ’s posts, the commericals on NBC and notifications from both SMASH and NBC’s PR reps in social media. Obama addressed the nation instead.

Totally agree.  For me Jennifer does not have the style range I would like, but when the song is in her sweet spot, nobody does it better.

I think she could carry it off on the stage but being the wrong age in a movie can kill it, see Diane Ross in The Wiz and Barbara Streisand in Hello Dolly.

But in the context of SMASH her character was to play is onstage and not in a movie. Tonight the character said she was playing the part at 30, which would be six years above the age range for “Dorothy ” of THE WIZ but still within the realm of reason that she would be cast if 1) produers thought they could get away with it and 2) she was a big enough name.
What is less believable is that a person who is considered “Broadway’s Baby” would ditch it all to do a few one-off cabarets. It could happen, but he/she would end up regretting it pretty quick I believe.
