Jennifer Hudson performs the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLIII.

I teared up a little, peeps.

Welcome back, Jennifer. We missed you.

Go Steelers.

Video after the JUMP…

  • curlyQ23

Thanks for the video, MJ. This was spectacular. Welcome back, Jennifer.

  • SallyinIllinois

It was damn perfect. Jennifer’s BACK!

  • Niall

I’m generally univested emotionally in any of the AIers. It’s a tv show, I don’t really know any of them and don’t care to know them. But I was on the edge of my seat rooting JHud through the national anthem. God bless her.

  • Jolene

Wow! Very very impressive. Just about the best NA I ever heard.

    Welcome back Jennifer.

  • SparklesATL

    Wow. Just Wow.

  • thebluemartini

    I got chills watching it!

  • kozisedso

That was just all kinds of beautiful…(wipes away tears….)

  • Paula

I’m not a Jennifer fan, but I thought she did a fantastic version of it. She brought tears to my eyes.

  • bjames

i was in a room full of people when that came on, and within the first 5 seconds of her singing it was SILENT. chills everywhere. awesome.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Make sure to switch on the HQ when you watch it…

Just click on the right arrow and then click on “HQ”

  • kathrynTX

That was a breautiful, passionate rendition. What a voice. What poise. She was beautiful.

  • Dlynne

That was incredible. When she took just a moment before she started to sing, I wondered if she was going to be able to do it, and then began the most beautiful version of the national anthem I have ever heard. The girl is a class-act. She also looked beautiful, stunning really.

  • shirley6700

Stay strong, Jennifer. What a great performance!!

  • Carlaria

Anyone who criticizes that performance, must have a heart of stone.
    Wonderful!

  • blissful

I tuned in just to see Jennifer (still scarred by the bad officiating in the Seahawk/Steeler game a couple of years ago) and I’m glad I did. That was heartfelt and beautiful. I hope she can find some kind of peace and move forward.

  • lefty

That one had me teary-eyed too. She did an amazing job.

  • SallyinIllinois

    Her makeup was flawless.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Oh my gosh, that was absolutely beautiful.

They should seriously sell that on iTunes.

    Phenomenal.

    Yep, I cried.

  • jumpstart

    Stunning. Just stunning.

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

Best National Anthem ever! She looked beautiful and sang it perfectly. It was amazing.

  • http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=561466&st=0 Preston

    http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=350275&GT1=28107

According to that article, it was pre-recorded.

But pre-recorded or not, that was possibly the best version I’ve ever heard. Utterly spectacular!

  • SallyinIllinois

Preston: That’s hard to believe because she was taking breaths….and that was background recorded music. Anyway — it was flawless.

  • http://huckleberryfriend.wordpress.com/ huckleberryfriend

Beautiful rendition by a beautiful woman!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

According to that article, it was pre-recorded.

The Super Bowl National anthem is pre-recorded every year.

It should be up on iTunes tonight, unless they aren’t doing that this year.

She did a great job lip syncing. I think it would be hard to make it look natural.

  • dv

    amazing

  • curlyQ23

It’s often in the artist’s best interest to pre-record. I remember when the Backstreet Boys sang the anthem at the 2002 Super Bowl, they insisted on singing it live. There were technical problems with one of their microphones and he was accused of forgetting the words to the anthem.

She did a great job lip syncing. I think it would be hard to make it look natural.

ITA. I suspect that she was actually singing along into a dead microphone.

I didn’t know that Rickey Minor was the producer of the pre-game show! I’m sure it was comforting for Jennifer to have a friendly, familiar face there.

  • abbysee

Good job Jen, and welcome back.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Well, someone posted a soundcheck from yesterday.

If she was lip-synching, she pulled it off.

  • workdog

I teared up a bit myself. That was some amazing strength to be on a world stage after such tragedy. She really showed some poise and class. Lip syncing? Don’t care….she could sing that live every day and twice on Sunday. It took guts to do what she did. Not always my favorite but she is definitely (imo) a talented, centered strong, person. God bless her. What a tough road.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’ve got more super bowl goodies coming up…. :)

  • aly

Wow!! I’m really impressed. Her life will never be the same, but
she is out there, trying to put it all together again. Bless her.

  • risalea

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard the anthem sung better. Bravo, Jennifer.

  • JudyOhio

I’m in awe. That was so flawless and beautiful. The best I’ve ever heard it sung.

  • Lisa

Holy. Crap. Stunning. Beautiful. Best version I have heard from “any” artist. ***walks away to cry now***

  • IdolFanatic

This was the ONLY good part of the Super Bowl this year.

  • poporange

I am glad Jennifer Hudson is back and felt bad for her about what happened to her family but it will not have that influence what I thought..It was ok not great with the added bells and do not understand why singers have to PROve how great they are..It is the NA do not Diva it..

YEs I guess I have a heart of stone but am not changing my opinion to get on the bandwagon at mjs..Superbowl was a great game.

  • itsalleternal

This was the ONLY good part of the Super Bowl this year.

Really? I agree Jennifer did a great job but it was a great game I thought!

  • BootStar

I have to agree that I think that may have been the most beautiful rendition of the SSB I’ve ever heard, and I watch a lot of sporting events. Whether Jennifer pre-recorded it or not, it was beautifully sung and beautifully performed. She looked so young up there (and thin); my heart really breaks for her, but I hope this is just the beginning of better days.

And the Boss was awesome, too, as was the entire game. This Philly girl has never been prouder to be a Steelers fan. What a class organization from top to bottom.

  • cookcricket

She was amazing!!! I got chills! Welcome back indeed!

The Boss was awesome and truly Rocked the half-time show!

I’m sad the Cardinals lost, but that. was one great game!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

It amazed me that at the party that I was at tonight, most of the people (who are mostly non-AI peeps), not only knew who JHud is, but also knew about her family tragedy and details surrounding it. And very single one of us was rooting for her and were very impressed with her tonight.

But, I have to say that this must have been bittersweet for her. Just about every singer’s dream is to be able to sing the NA at the Super Bowl. And the fact that Jennifer achieved this milestone in her career, but her mom and brother and nephew were not there to celebrate it with her must have been tough. So to that, I just have to say – keep on keeping on, Jen… we’re all there behind you cheering you on.

    PS – YAY STEELERS!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

.It is the NA do not Diva it..

Actually, I thought it was pretty restrained. I don’t think she melismed all over it, she just sang it in her style. She’s a soul singer. She’s not going to sing it like Pat Boone.

  • Grammie Kari

Did you ever want to hug someone in pain? I wanted to hug Jennifer. She did a great job. Prayers for healing continue.

  • cookcricket

Actually, I thought it was pretty restrained. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think she melismed all over it, she just sang it in her style.

mj, ITA! I kept waiting for major runs, but felt she restrained herself and did the NA proud.

  • StevenD

I thought she looked increbily nervouse right before the beginning of the sound but I also thought she looked strong and beautilful. I also couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stop focusing how wonderful she looked tonight. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d only caught a few pictures of her recently but so I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ts preperrared to see what she looked like. I have to say though, I thought she looked sad, stunning, and sang the heavens out of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Star Spangled Banner.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I think for at least a way it would be in the best interest of everyone not to mention the tradgies on any talk show, red carpet interview and just let her performance in the next few weeks speak for them selves. I think by not interviewing her right before one of these performances and letting her go out there and deal with everything by just performaning. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be some emotionally chilling performances to come. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait for the Grammyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s to see what sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to sing right she winds at least one Grammy Award. Has anyone seen her Wonderful full force belting version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Somwehere Over the Rainbow from the Patti LaBelle tribute on youtube (along with Fantasia powering though Lady Marmaladeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) With all of this I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wai tto see whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in the future for Jennifer Hudson.

This was the ONLY good part of the Super Bowl this year.

Oh, the ads were good, at least some of them, and you guysn get to eat at Dennys for free…

Dennys, Monster.com, CareerBuilding.com and Coke Zero were really good…

  • SpenserJ

So, I’ll start by saying that I just got home…. FROM THE SUPER BOWL woo hoo. Extremely fun game. Jennifer was indeed amazing. Bruce’s half time show alone was worth the price of admission.

And yes, the national anthem at the super bowl is always pre-recorded. It’s too difficult to arrange the acoustical logistics for the live crowd and TV without doing it that way. In fact, one of the most popular pre-recorded Super Bowl national anthem’s – the Whitney Houston version – was also for a Tampa hosted super bowl (in the old stadium).

It amazed me that at the party that I was at tonight, most of the people (who are mostly non-AI peeps), not only knew who JHud is, but also knew about her family tragedy and details surrounding it.

I was surprised earlier in the week that Mr. Spens was in the know about this situation. He told me that all of the super bowl coverage on the sports channels during the week had mentioned it.

And, we attended a few of the other festivities this weekend – EVERYONE knew what Jennifer had been through. From what I can gather, there wasn’t a single player on that field who didn’t know the story. And, from where I was sitting, the entire stadium sure seemed to be pulling for her.

Not only did I get weepy – but I was almost in a full on tear-gushing episode.

I didn’t see any of the other idols – so I have no recaps. Although, I did get to see LL Cool J, and he was awesome! And, Mr. Spens had a ton of opportunities to fantard over some Hall of Fame former NFL’ers. He was like a 13 year old girl at an Idol concert.

If the game comes to your town – and you have kids – I highly recommend the NFL experience thing that they do. It’s a ton of fun and my son says it was the best day ever LOL.

Okay, I’m tired and I need to go to bed, but I just wanted you all to know that Jennifer looked as good on the jumbotron as she did on TV :)

  • http://www.AuthorsTeam.com ghostwriter

Did her voice get better? Smoother, more mature.
I have always loved her since Weekend in New England, but that was a more mature voice we heard. She is truly amazing.

And– could those lyrics be any more appropriate for someone who has survived a tragedy?

Despite the ramparts we watched, our star spangled banner still waves–
Glad to see your banner is still waving, Jennifer.

And for those of you into dream interpretation, if you ever have a dream with someone singing “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” it represents self-realization.

  • http://www.AuthorsTeam.com ghostwriter

Oh and one other thing . . .
Anyone remember Jennifer’s bug-eyed performances on AI? She still did a little of the wide-eye thing in Dream Girls, but she has totally learned to control her face like a professional.

I’m telling you, there are a million things performers have to be concerned with. But it’s nice to see her growth in every department.

JH may have the biggest, most technically proficient singing voice of any AI finalist by the time she is Melinda’s age. Or maybe she already does.

(I wonder, on a sheer decibel level, who can sing louder, JH or Kelly, lol.)

  • bean99

She did a great job. My husband was impressed and he only knew she was in AI at one time. I told him about her family and the Oscar. Too bad about the outcome of the game, though. I also wasn’t impressed by this year’s batch of commercials. There were some cute ones but nothing special. Oh well, we had some good food and Springsteen rocked.

  • savgal

Jennifer looked and sounded wonderful – I did feel for her when she told the deep breath before singing. You could tell the whole stadium was with her. And what a game!! Pulse-pounding for sure, disappointed that the Cardinals did not win, but their incredible effort was a joy to watch and how can anyone deny Kurt Warner the Hall of Fame after this season? He is a true American Idol, to me.

  • savgal

Meant to say, “took deep breath”…

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not going to sing it like Pat Boone.

Snort! Yeah. Thank God for that.

Seeing that she wanted to give it a gospel feel, she definitely held back on all she could have done with the song.

    Great performance. Haven’t stopped watching.

  • dante

I didn’t watch much of Idol S3 and haven’t seen Dreamgirls so I haven’t been a JHud fan, but I was majorly impressed with her. She looked nervous (her feet seemed to be shaking some), sad and so proud – very classy.

I honestly think that was the best SSB I have ever heard. WOW. I will definately buy it if it comes to iTunes.

Bless her heart – she has a long road ahead of her.

  • tierbee

This — “From what I can gather, there wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a single player on that field who didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know the story.”

I remarked to my sister that it looked like the players knew, and were rooting for her. It was a beautiful National Anthem, very classy, and her voice is amazing. She looked so nervous for a minute there before she started, and then she just looked beautiful and proud. God love her, that was a brave place to start your comeback, and she nailed it.

And that 4th quarter was just awesome… I was hoping the Cardinals would win, but I’m glad they turned it into a game. And I love Kurt Warner :)

  • SashaB

OMG. Jennifer was amazing. Just amazing. One of the best version of SSB that I have ever heard.

  • LK09

I read that JH lip synced the SSB. Is that true?

  • poporange

“sing like Pat Boone” hmm would be funny ..I listened to NA again not too many bells but stil just ok. Why Jhud has the chops to go for those glory notes. The problem which I respectfully disagree Jhud like many others showed some restraint but still sounded like a concert. Then it is the way Jennfier sings and also biased does not grab me vocally like other in her style..

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I read that JH lip synced the SSB. Is that true?

Yes. The National Anthem at the Super Bowl is nearly always lip synced. It’s really not that scandalous. There was a discussion about this on page 1.

I remember the discussion in the Jordin Sparks thread last year when she sang the Anthem. She looked so nervous, and we wondered if she was stressed about syncing the song properly. Bad lip syncing looks really lame, so that would be some pressure in itself.

  • PattyP

That was absolutely beautiful. I don’t like overly diva-ed arrangements (by men or women) of the NA, and that one, I thought, was nicely done. It wasn’t straight up, but the vocals weren’t so wild that they were distracting, as I’ve heard on some versions. She has a beautiful voice. As others have said, I wanted to hug her and try to make her feel better. I hope she has people around her to talk to about what happened, and I hope she feels the support of fans and non-fans around the country. I don’t know anyone who didn’t feel badly for her after hearing about the killings.

  • LK09

I know that bad lip syncing looks awful, so it is great that she did a good job.

  • IdolFanatic

Really? I agree Jennifer did a great job but it was a great game I thought!

Not if you’re a Cardinals fan.

  • 2dogs

I wonder if they had the mike turned off so that she should actually sing along with the pre-recording? Because I would never of guessed she was lip synching. Anyway, I thought she did a nice job and it was touched by the moment.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I think for at least a way it would be in the best interest of everyone not to mention the tradgies on any talk show, red carpet interview and just let her performance in the next few weeks speak for them selves.

I think that if she doesn’t want to talk about it yet, her handlers will make it perfectly clear to anyone and everyone that those questions are not to be asked. And unless she encounters some crass, insensitive, asshole reporter who hates rules, I’d think that just about everyone would comply by those wishes.

Spense! Duh, I should have realized that you’d go to the game! I had a coworker who went too… talked to him today when he called to confirm that he was indeed taking a vacation day today, lol. He said it was a thrilling game, especially the 4th quarter. So glad you had fun!! :)

And, we attended a few of the other festivities this weekend – EVERYONE knew what Jennifer had been through. From what I can gather, there wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a single player on that field who didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know the story. And, from where I was sitting, the entire stadium sure seemed to be pulling for her.

I wondered if the players all knew, because you could almost see it on their faces as the camera went from player to player.
