I was expecting tonight’s Jennifer Hudson holiday special, Jennifer Hudson: I’ll Be Home For Christmas to have some drama. After all, Jennifer was going back to Chicago, the place of what has to be a lot of bittersweet memories. It was only a little over a year ago that her mother, brother and nephew were murdered, allegedly at the hands of her sister’s ex-boyfriend.

But, Jen’s journey home wasn’t the emotion-packed tear-fest I was expecting. There were a few vague references to her losses, and except for a scene at the very beginning with her fiance, David Ortunga and little baby, David Jr., and an a capella sing with some cousins mid special–family was glaringly absent.

The action centered around her high school and her church–the two outside forces that shaped her as a singer.   At her alma mater, Jennifer was reunited with the teacher who encouraged her young dreams. And, standing outside her church, Jennifer remembered praying about the “Dreamgirls” role. A week later she learned the part was hers.

In lieu of the   gut-wrenching drama were some pretty incredible performances. I posted my favorites after the jump.

Jennifer sings a joyous “This Christmas” at her high school, a rousing medley of gospelized Christmas favorites at her church (check out Rickey Minor!), a sassy “Baby It’s Cold Outside”   with Michael Buble and a starkly beautiful “O Holy Night”.

Video after the JUMP…

omg. Singing my favorite Christmas song no less. So GORGEOUS!!!! Wow wow wow!!!

She sounds like an angel and looks beautiful!

Wow!!! Her cutie pie fans are sweet.

This seemed like more of a holiday special then Carrie’s was

Yep! Her voice is so “rich”….just beautiful .

  • terps

O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas song and I will admit this is one of the better versions.

  • Suzanne

I loved Baby It’s Cold Outside. (Michael Buble was really animated too. I’d like to see him do a little acting.)

so–lip synching? I see that the sound is out of synch with the picture, but the volume didn’t fluctuate when the mics were away from their mouths. Uh-oh.

    She’s really something.

Another reason I have zero (music) respect for Simon, like Adam… he never saw the unreal talent, and powerful voice, with a beautiful tone… damn that guy is tone deaf.

I wish Adam would follow her lead, she is what she is, and she USES it!!! She really… REALLY uses her unique gift.. which Adam has, too… but he doesn’t use it like she does.

He seems to want to fall into the “cookie cutter” thing, and she does what she does…

    She really is great.

  • Lea

She is MY american idol, amazing special tonight.. I loved every performance..

  • dreyraglin

This special was amazing!!! Let me tell you from start to finish Jennifer worked it out!!! I’ve really never seen a Christmas special this exciting. It was full of joy and happiness and everything Christmas is all about. People thought for some reason Jennifer was gonna spend the whole entire hour crying for some strange reason. In some article today I read Jennifer said she is a Christmas fanatic so I doubt this was gonna be something sad. “Oh Holy Night” “Silent Night” and “The Christmas Song” where my favs but I really loved them all. She really needs to release a Christmas cover album. It would be big

Also little tidbit Jennifer’s A&R Larry Jackson over at Arista has some news about her album in the last couple of days

@thelarryjackson:Starting on the Jennifer Hudson album in one week! Can’t wait. Gonna be major!! 2:00 PM Dec 10th from web

@thelarryjackson:Jennifer Hudson ABC Christmas special on tonight! Look out for the new album coming by Easter. about 4 hours ago from web

He’s the same guy who handles Leona, Alicia, and Whitney’s A&R. Can’t wait for Easter to come. Jenn’s new album is gonna be great.

He seems to want to fall into the ‘cookie cutter’ thing, and she does what she does’ ¦

I think Adam likes to act and he is very good at it. He also has a phenomenal voice. Way out there phenomenal….

So…. he should definitely sing killer songs, and he should act…..He is a big bundle of talent trying to figure out what the heck to do with his gifts… I think he will find his way and be happy…

  • cakeygirl

wait-did u just say adam is “cookie cutter”? LOL that is the funniest thing i have heard all day!

  • cakeygirl

    love jennifer-she is awesome

Another reason I have zero (music) respect for Simon, like Adam’ ¦ he never saw the unreal talent, and powerful voice, with a beautiful tone’ ¦ damn that guy is tone deaf.

^^^Simon was more interested in critiquing her outfits – she designed some of them and he made fun of them – plus she had sung on a cruise ship and in his pea brain that was a turnoff. I’m tired of Simon, wish he’d stay across the pond!

“I wish Adam would follow her lead, she is what she is, and she USES it!!! She really’ ¦ REALLY uses her unique gift.. which Adam has, too’ ¦ but he doesn’t use it like she does.”

^^^Now here you lost me, but that’s okay, each to his own. For me, it’s kind of hard to compare the two. The only thing they have in common is power vocals.

I guess what that person was trying to say is they want Adam to go the same career path as far as success goes as Jennifer has created for herself. No way should Adam change his singing style and personality and what not to be like Jennifer but to get his career on the same route as she did by defying the odds AI had against them both and coming out on top.

Unlike Adam though Jennifer didn’t get the much love that we see Adam got while on the show and people thought once she was voted off she would fade into obscurity like many other Idol top 12 finalist. But Jennifer turned it around and used her talents to prove the Idol bubble wrong and broke out of it and now has cemented herself and gained respect in both the movie and music industry. And I guess that’s sort of the route people want to see Adam go success wise.

Wow, Michael Buble is short. Or she’s tall?

Anyway, that was a fun duet — tho they weren’t making a lot of contact. The classic version is Ray Charles with Betty Carter (on disc but no video), but here Ray isn’t doing bad singing it with Dionne Warwick at the Grammys in 1987:

And would you believe Norah Jones & Willie Nelson? Actually it’s surprisingly wonderful:

I love her version of O Holy Night. I got chills watching this, because I know she credits her faith for getting her through the tragedies and so singing this song (in a church setting) must have been meaningful to her.
She kept it simple and powerful (and the choir didn’t overpower her) and sang it at a good tempo (I don’t like the slooow versions). Perfect performance!

  • leeann

I really admire Jennifer for never going for gut-wrenching drama ever in any of her contacts with media. Through all these, she has remained gracious and strong – that girl has depths of inhumane strength. I’m sure her fiancee (or husband?) and her new baby boy help, but this has to be such a difficult holiday…

  • Reflections On Life

wow. speechless. i flove jhud. she’s the gift that keeps on giving, and she keeps getting better & better.

  • druzilla

Her voice has improved. Good for her. I wish she’d get married already. Good grief, make your child legitimate! It makes a mockery of what O Holy Night stands for, really.

Took 5 comments before *d*m L*mb*rt was injected into this entirely unrelated topic? His fanatics must be dozing.

Jennifer is a very classy lady; I always enjoy seeing her.

  • maturin

I’ve got tears from the point where the whole crowd gets to its feet in the first vid. AWESOME. The joy on everyone’s face and the singing back to her!

“Jennifer is a very classy lady; I always enjoy seeing her.”

Me too!! I loved watching this special and as usual her voice is amazing! I really enjoyed her duet with Michael Buble, and her singing the Christmas Song and O Holy night. She is quite a talent!

I can’t wait to see her play Minnie Mendela. I want her to continue to do movies as well.

And that baby is adorable with his fat cheeks. :)

  • unique28v

“She really needs to release a Christmas cover album. It would be big”

I agree. Jennifer’s voice is “classic”. It will never go out of style and her voice fits these type of songs for sure since they are classic as well.

“She is MY american idol, amazing special tonight.. I loved every performance.”

Yup! Mine too! Jennifer has always been my #1 Idol. I don’t care if she did come in 7th place. I wish the special could have been longer but an hour is enough.

And I want her hair style. lol

so’“lip synching? I see that the sound is out of synch with the picture, but the volume didn’t fluctuate when the mics were away from their mouths. Uh-oh.

The Chicago Tribune claimed said there was lip synching too though on Silent Night. But I’m wondering if it was just a problem with dubbing.

I enjoyed Jennifer’s special. I love her voice and a Christmas special really lets her take us to church with her singing, it’s perfect. Setting it in her hometown and letting her take us to some places that mean something to her was a good move IMO.

  • lucy

Oh, this is just so stupid. As if there weren’t ample ample ample evidence by now that Jennifer’s a fabulous singer, live and every other way. … Trying to pin “lip synching” on a tv program is just lame and meaningless, especially in the case of anybody who’s clearly demonstrated that she’s a real *singer.* … (which is the case with pretty much all the Idol alums except maybe Blake (who has his own fine musical talents).) So dumb.

  • BootStar

She is so so good. I wish I’d recorded this last night instead of that godawful a cappella show. Thank God for the internets (and mj!).

  • windmills

I agree lucy, especially because it’s obviously an original Jen vocal seeing as she hadn’t recorded Silent Night before this special. Maybe they couldn’t get her properly miked up for that scene so she recorded the vocal for SN in studio and they taped the performance part another time and didn’t get the dubbing right. Whatevs. The only reason it wasn’t live live is because the producers made the decision to tape it in a setting that didn’t lend itself to a live mike.

  • tinawina

Those clips were fantastic. She looked and sounded great. Thanks mj!

  • lucy

She is so so good. I wish I’d recorded this last night instead of that godawful a cappella show.

Wow, I loved the acapella show! So interesting to see the different approaches and the different strengths and weaknesses of the various groups, to me!

Loved the Jennifer show, too, of course. I was sure she’d do an amazing job on Christmas songs, and she certainly did.

  • angela

What a beautiful show it was! And I dont even like Christmas music! I actually liked that they did not concentrate on the family tragedy, and I kind of think Jenifer wanted to keep it private. Also, can’t help but to compare this show to Carries, classy vs tasteless, just goes to show you don’t need cheap jokes and low humor to make a holiday show a joy to watch. And that duet with Michel Buble, just to die for!

  • Suzanne

Wow, I loved the acapella show!

    me too.

Trying to pin ‘lip synching’ on a tv program is just lame and meaningless, especially in the case of anybody who’s clearly demonstrated that she’s a real *singer.*

i don’t really get that argument. Obviously both Jennifer and Michael Buble are magnificent singers. But there’s really no getting around that Michael Buble has his mic 18 inches away from his mouth at times and the volume of his voice doesn’t fluctuate. I’m criticizing the producers of the show, not the singers. Just like when AI for most of this season had lip synching on the group numbers. The producers/director of the show can control it more, but as a performer they must hate it. They aren’t Ashlee Simpson–they don’t need the safety net of pre-recording and auto-tune.

  • lucy

    I see what you’re saying.

All I was trying to say was that the complaint doesn’t really point to anything significant when it’s made about people who can actually, you know, sing. So why complain about it? And, as you mentioned, to the extent that it mattered — though I don’t really see that it mattered at all! — it mattered a tad in the *look* of the thing, and that was clearly a producer/director issue and not a singers’ issue…. which kind of adds up to a ‘so what’ to me….

I really enjoyed Jennifer’s Christmas special last night. The singing was absolutely amazing. I, too, hope she records a Christmas cover CD soon; plus, there’s a new CD coming out in April. Hurray.

  • carolinacharms

I watched this in its entirety and have it on DVR. The only time I ever saw lipping was when she was floating down the river at night in a boat singing Silent Night. It was more like a music video shot live. No other way to do it because with the advent of every imperfection you’d have to keep reshooting and backing up the boat to catch the nighttime skyline. Beautiful arrangement and scenery. The rest of the program was equally brilliant. Oh Holy Night was awesome, and her cousins accompanied her on a rich and souful, a capella version of Oh Come All Ye Faithful. The Gospel medley at her home Church was fantastic as well, and I loved Buble’s contribution.

  • Reflections On Life

    @lucy – ITA!

it’s a taped special, not a live broadcast. why do i care if a taped vocal was taped simultaneously with, or separately from, the taped performance? either way, it’s taped, with no pretense of being live.

“^^^Now here you lost me, but that’s okay, each to his own. For me, it’s kind of hard to compare the two. The only thing they have in common is power vocals. ”

:) I don’t know how to…type it.. it’s really just the “processed” stuff.. like Brit, Gaga (who does have talent) etc..etc.. with that voice he needs to let it flow… he’s got something so special, like Jennifer does, but she uses it perfect. That’s what people fell in love with, that’s why people said he should have number one songs.

Adam’s style has changed, do you think he could sing “Crawl thru Fire” now? I don’t… I know he did do some processed stuff before, but he also sang his face off, too.

He’s my favorite no matter what.. I hope this doesn’t look like I’m not, because he’s by far my favorite singer.. he and Jennifer have two of the best voices I’ve ever heard.

I know I didn’t make my point, but oh well…
