It’s that time of the year again… Eurovision week! Azerbaijan won Eurovision Song Contest last year, so Eurovision moved to Baku this year.

X Factor UK alums, John and Edward Grimes, better known as Jedward, represented Ireland in the first semifinal tonight. 18 countries competed for 10 places in Saturday’s final. Jedward had the pimp spot – they performed last and Ireland was also the last finalist announced.

Europe did a great job. I would personally pick Montenegro instead of Albania, but other than that, I’m cool with the results. Austria was the worst.

Good to see Jedward getting through. Hope they win. Our entry is bloody awful, just why pick the Hump?

I’m so sad about San Marino. That song was so bad/hilarious/entertaining. I was looking forward to seeing it again on Saturday.

I was sorta disappointed.  Moldova did not have a drum-banging grandma or a fairy on a unicycle this year.  And I could not get over the fact that their singer looked like the love child of Colin Farrell and Edward Norton…

Albania’s qualification for the finale is a big surprise for me, the song is so the anti-Eurovision style of dancey, fun, sweet, rhythmic or playing sentimental-card. The strange, operatic, mystic, sad ballad was “sold” well by the charismatic singer, her good voice and mysterious interpretation to be voted through. I’m really happy for her and her country! This is the song from the national selection, in the “old-fashion” style with orchestra, conductor and the simple singer http://goo.gl/XyoC8.
    Rona did great in the first semi-final http://goo.gl/dZCge, I thought she’s over 30 but she’s only 25 year-old.

Congratulations to Jedward! I saw some comments concerning their hairs like “they ran out of gel?” lol and many “wow”s for their cartwheels. I don’t like though that Switzerland didn’t qualify :-(

Montenegro was just a bad joke.

I just got to watch it 2 days later. Most of the songs I liked best didn’t make it through. I liked Montenegro, Finland, Israel, and kind of liked Switzerland, Latvia and Belgium. Of those that got through, I didn’t like Albania or Greece at all, and wasn’t too nuts about Romania, Cyprus or Russia. The old ladies singing  “Party For Everybody” for Russia is a gimmick that is obviously working, but good for them. Lastly, did the clip of the French song show them actually singing in English?
