Thanks MJ…Go JC! That was really really good.

Now..at the risk of a scolding for getting all fangirly: I am panting for some DC footage. Are you gonna hook us up MJ?

BTW: Shouldn’t you be sleeping now? After all that you’ve done for us you are entitled to a good night’s sleep…we can wait…impatiently…but wait we can.

  • sleepyinsomniac

That was a great performance by Jason. Some vids of him doing OTR and Daydream have also been uploaded here

Thanks so much for all the updates MJ. Will be waiting on tenterhooks for the DC vids!

  • gorejuicegrl

Thanks a million, MJ. Jason sounded great. This was a great way to start my day. You’ve made lots of Jason’s fans very happy.

    New Jason thread. Yay!!!

    Have a safe trip home.

  • Same Cage

Thanks you so much, MJ, for posting this video!!! The quality is amazing!!!

Jason was unbelievably awesome last night!!!!! I can’t wait to see him in August!

Thank you, also, for your real time reports last night. It made it possible for a lot of us to “be there”!!!!

  • primeminister

Excuse the fan girl in me…

but DARN, that boy looks fantastic in those jeans!

  • brie200

I like his red shoes. Too flippin funny, though somebody pointed out he’s not playing his own guitar. Wonder why.

  • gingerly

WooT!!! All sorts of awesomeness there :) Thanks so much.

  • gabam

though somebody pointed out heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not playing his own guitar.

I’m a little confused by that statement.

I think that I will buy Ray LaMontagne’s version of “Crazy” in honor of Jason. Because of him, I’m buying stuff that I never would have bought otherwise. I Hope that I like Ray’s version since it inspired Jason’s.

  • Jolene

Does anybody know for sure what are the other videos mj got? I love Jason alot, but I have to admit I’m craving some DC. Hopefully someone got the full version of Hello, because even through the broken live feed it sounded amazing.
Oh, and Billie Jean is up on YouTube, and it’s fantastic!
Thank you so much for the recap and the vids and the pictures yet to come, mj (and pj) – very very much appreciated!

  • maturin

Wow, good for the kid. He gets better and better. Great, great song choice, a lot of fun. A like the whole sort of spanish guitar maroccas vibe to it. He’s really expressive, too. Nice.

My appreciation for him got kind of blurred by the not so great performances at the end of the show, but since then, I notice the studio cuts from iTunes I got for him sound excellent on relistening. Plus, he’s been so adorable in interviews and videos and such. Dammit, now there are multiple idols whose future stuff will tempt my wallet.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

that was awesome :) ty mj

  • brie200

I just meant he wasn’t playing his Luna guitar, which is what he has been generally been using for performances since he got it.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Now..at the risk of a scolding for getting all fangirly: I am panting for some DC footage. Are you gonna hook us up MJ?

I got a few DC videos, but the sound is terrible…

  • janerazor

Jason does the finest “oh oh oooohs” in the biz, y’all!

MJ, thanks for the vid. I get why they don’t allow vid recording at the concerts, but, day-um, you are giving them some primo advertisement for the tour here.

  • St.Lucia

YAY! That made my morning. Thanks, MJ!

I can’t WAIT for the tour. Except I have to wait until September to see my blue-eyed dreadlocked boy, and my Cookie. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/blakelewisfansunite Cindy

    Ah!
    THat was so great!
I can’t wait until August now!!

  • MN Sue

Take that all ye indie label execs!

  • idolbeat

Thank you MJ! I know I am obsessed when I can’t wait to hear what the media’s reaction is!

Dang. I’m a little disappointed that there are no duets. But 3 songs are good. I would have traded Hallelujah for SOTR though.

    A couple more clips…

Wow! Wow! Thanks MJ! Woo hoo! That was all kinds of wonderful, and much clearer than the feed/download I heard–Jason just gets better and better!

(Breathe, calm down, it’s not even 10:00 am yet…)

  • longsong

WOOHOOOOO!!! That boy is such a NATURAL when it comes to performing, it’s like a second nature for him.

    Please somebody sign him SOON.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Thanks, MJ! I loved it. You did a fabulous job! I can’t wait to see the show.

It makes up for the lack of our lunch date vide. :-)

  • capami

Thanks so much, MJ. Jason is completely awesome. I can’t wait to see him Monday at the Staples Center.

  • dare2dream

MJ – Thanks again for posting Jason’s Crazy video so quickly. His fans have been waiting 6 months to hear his “audition” song. Hope you had a great time @ the concert. Was in Rickey’s live video blog. He was sooooo jealous! LOL

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Now that was worth waiting for.

Great video and audio quality. Thank you, MJ!

    It’s cute. :-) He’s cute.

ETA: I’m bringing this over from the old crack thread, just in case peeps missed it last night.

    From USA Today:

:ason Castro got David Archuleta to stay out late — way late, like 1 a.m. (All part of the go-kart extravaganza — the venue even stayed open late for the Idols.) And Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s dad was encouraging him to hang with the guys. “Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gotten kind of comfortable now,” Castro says of his Idol-mate.

But Castro admits ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s perhaps he who is most misunderstood among the group. “Somebody (reportedly Kimberley Locke in an interview) said I was dumb as a bag of rocks,” he says (though he insists he reads very little of his own press, except for the occasional glowing dispatch forwarded over e-mail by his mom). “Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s foolish. They donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even know me.” Like, they probably donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that the former Texas A&M student scored 1340 on his SATs “without even studying.” He says heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like Uh-Huh in The Little Rascals, who said: “Actually, I’ve always had a rather extensive vocabulary, not to mention a phenomenal grasp of grammar and a superlative command of syntax. I simply chose not to employ them.” Or Mark Twain (paraphrased): “Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s better to remain quiet and let people think youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

The Vans-clad Castro is refreshingly candid: “I have no record-label talks. 19 (Entertainment) told me one label showed a little interest but they werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sure it would turn into anything.” No matter. Castro plans to make music 2008-style, with or without a record deal. So heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s writing his typical acoustic-heavy songs — some “happy, beachy,” others meatier — in the meantime, though heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s having a hard time getting work done on tour. “Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re all in cramped quarters. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not really conducive” to the creative process.

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s looking forward to singing his audition song, Gnarls Barkleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Crazy, tonight. (It never aired during the show because Idol couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get clearance.) Retooled in the style of Ray LaMontagne, “it fits me really well.”

What heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not so jazzed about: the final group number, Don’t Stop the Music. (The group stuff, incidentally, was his parentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ favorite part of the show.) “Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a song I would ever sing. I feel awkward singing it. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fun.”

  • sumidol

That was much better than the audio I heard last night. Oh what a fan I am – how dum is this, I kinda got a little choked up hearing him finally sing Crazy – so proud I guess after following his every thread on here waiting for more from him. He sounded WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU THANKYOU MJ AND PJ FOR BRINGING ALL OF THIS TO US!!!

  • brie200

I got choked up too a bit when I heard not only how he performed but the crowd’s reaction to him. So proud of him.

Somebody suggested watching mj’s dailymotion video in full screen mode (apparently, by clicking on the box with the arrow at the bottom of the screen) and I just did and it sure was pretty awesome. I love the effect of the light hitting Jason’s guitar. ;)

(Please don’t do it, though, if that means taking up a lot of mj’s bandwidth and I’m sorry for suggesting it, mj. Heh. ;b)

Great video, great performance. It was wonderful to “finally” hear it!! :clap_tb:

  • Tony

Hmmm….that wasn’t as good as I thought it MIGHT have been. There’s still that tinge of amateurishness that I can’t help but be distracted by.

Oh Tony, by no means is Jason a pro yet but for all of us that love him – it was well worth the wait. I would take a 1000 amateurish – real – down to earth – charming songs of this boys to 1 extremely polished, on point, no mistakes ONE of anyone else right now. It was extremely better than I thought it would be in my small opinion.

I heard that your fav David A did so well, I am happy for him and for all, well except poor little Rami. Hopefully she will shake off her fears and become more comfortable with this as the tour progress’s?

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

MJ, you really rock for bringing us this bit of crack. Thank you! I’ve watched more times than I care to admit.

I wonder if the sound is better than the Cookie vids because it’s more acoustic based? It’s not like you changed seats!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

No wonder the judges let him through to Hollywood. That was fantastic. (:

    Thanks, MJ!

  • SpenserJ

Wow – I’m O.D’ing on all of the crack here today. What a great video – thanks MJ. I’ve already watched it more times than can be healthy.

ETA: Thanks for bringing that article over PJ – I didn’t get to see it last night. I’m sad that Jason had to hear what KL said about him. To me, he has such an expansive vocabulary, that even with his low key, goofy way of speaking, there’s no way I could ever think that boy is stupid.

  • flynnsgirl

I bet he doesn’t have the Luna because it will get pretty beat up by the end of this tour. I think he is saving that baby for ever.
Thanks MJ, this was so great to hear. I think he sounds amazing. Just wait until the tour progresses a little, he will get better and better. They must have all been pretty nervous last night.
Also, just had to add that Jason is one beautiful boy, astonishingly so!

  • 4got

Love the new crack and am totally addicted. I’ve played it a gazillion times. Thanks MJ.

  • Tony

I heard that your fav David A did so well

    I don’t have a season 7 favorite.

  • rereader

    From MasterClassLady on this performance:

Now that was stellar. Good for him. And the fans love him, of course. I love his folksy vibe so much. He looks so relaxed and his singing sounds more effortless than when he appeared on the show.

(For those who don’t know, she’s a professional vocal coach who blogs on both AI and Canadian Idol, so of course she’s a stickler on vocal technique.)

  • sweetatlantis

Jason singing Crazy was absolutely, breathtakingly, the best! IMO, he is the most distinctive artist to show up on the scene in decades. Love this guy and his music.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I bet he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the Luna because it will get pretty beat up by the end of this tour. I think he is saving that baby for ever

True, but it’s also a different one from the one he played pre-Luna.

As much as I’m looking forward to seeing this tour, I’m really hoping we get Jason playing some small venues. :-)

I’m betting a lot of them are gonna sound more effortless on the tour.

  • GeminiDolly

    This was so amazing.

  • lilbrusc102

aw! I love him so much….amazing!

  • sumidol

“He looks so relaxed and his singing sounds more effortless than when he appeared on the show.”

Yes, that is it Masterclass lady – I was listening and waiting for a squeaky note or no strength. That is the difference in this, OUR Jason was belting that song out with so much JOY and power and what PJ said – as the tour gets going and so much practise they will only improve.

  • MN Sue

I think we just witnessed what Jason can do when he has fully digested a song. It was stong and confident. I loved his interpretation.

  • capami

The tour must be so amazing for him.

Just last year , he was singing at a waterpark and coffee houses for a handful of people and now he’s in front of an audience over 12,000 people.

    He’s so smooth and confident.

  • rereader

To me he looks and sounds like someone who is doing exactly what he is meant to do and who knows it. Niceee!

  • sumidol

I didnt notice the guitar solo earlier – he is singing AND playing well. He is just so talented and SpenserJ – what thread are you stuck in now?? I laughed out loud at your comment on one of these threads – it is a happy day on this blog of MJ’s. I almost forgot SYTUCD – I will have to go check that out now

I agree. I appreciate his manner and lack of pretension. But y’all all know that. :-)

As for KL, I’d think anyone who’s been on the show would understand how it works and look beyond the editing if they wanted to do so. I’m not going to beat her up, but I didn’t see her season and she’s not giving me much reason to check her out…

ETA: Spense, this is OT, but I found a Brooke vid. Didn’t know where to put it, so I put it in the Carly, Brooke, Jason photo thread.

Crazy!! Very very cool. I’m so thrilled he kicked butt on this. I can’t stop watching.

I was a little nervous about Jas in the big arena. I shoulda known better.

Now I’m itching for the daydream bootleg. I heard screaming on the audio.

And thank you MJ for taping! You got the bestest vid & sound quality of this.

Bandwidth usage is not affected by viewing a video fullscreen. It’s your own computer’s processing capability that allows the video to be scaled to fullscreen output.

It’s the deep bass effects that distort most cameras’ audio recordings. Acoustic performances don’t tend to employ the same pounding bass accompaniments.

For those who are thinking of recording videos at future concerts, I’ve found that Sony digital cameras seem to handle bass effects the best. I have an older 5 MP Sony camera that still records nice rock concert videos. My newer Canon camera, while it takes better pictures and general videos, cannot handle deep bass (or at least I haven’t found the right audio setting yet). However, it recorded some very nice videos at an acoustic concert.

Daydream in Glendale (pretty good quality)

It’s especially great in high quality! And this is what masterclasslady had to say about that particular clip…

who is that charismatic young performer and what did he do with the poor, frightened Jason we watched during the AI season?

Oh my goodness! Can this kid sing or what?! I can actually hear some vibrato coming through his voice. His voice sounds so rich and pure – all at the same time.

And his falsetto and ad lib moments were outstanding. As outstanding as the growing star power of this very talented, very genuine young man.

So, which label gets to sign him, because he most definitely should be recording a CD in the Fall.

(And she’s mostly been a David fan–both Davids.)

    American Idol: Pre-show chatter

Castro, when I last talked to him, was rarin’ to get going on tour. By Thursday, he’s totally diggin’ it: “It’s great. I get more excited every day. Every day, it’s like ‘All right, we’re doing this again.’”

He admits not being totally comfortable performing in the first show in Glendale, Ariz. but felt a lot better by show No. 2 in San Diego. He says he likes the tour better because it’s more real than the TV show. There’s not the constant pressure of learning the songs, and there’s a lot more interaction with fans, musically and outside the shows: “It’s fun and encouraging.”

Every day, he says, he can’t believe “am I seriously doing this?”

From etrain’s ElliottCat101′s account (a good read, with pics) of her encounter with the Idols at the buses in San Diego (she’s also a Jason fan)…

…The first one to actually make it to me (there was a long line of people) was Jason Castro. That morning à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’last minute and rushed- I had decided to make myself a Jason t-shirt. Well the first thing he says to me is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I like your shirt!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ And then he gave me the cutest smile. Meanwhile my mom is standing next to me, and she actually took a long time making her shirt and he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t say anything to her haha. So sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What about my shirt?!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and Jason looks at it and says à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ohà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦. I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see it cause your hair was covering ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ sorry.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ haha I felt bad for my mom, but it was kinda funny! he sounded sooo sleepy. I told him how much I love his video blog, and asked him why exactly he couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t do it anymore, and he started explaining to me what had happened (security purposes, some venues donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like you recording in them, etc). What a nice way to wake up – to lots and lots of Jasonnn! Woot!

Wow purplesmile! It will take me quite a while to catch up with all of that! Well, one does what one must. :smile_wp:

Meanwhile, in response to this clip of the Fresno SOTR, MasterClassLady says:

This is the first thing I watched this AM! Lovely performance indeed and isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it great that we can finally hear the full length version?

He is such a talent – so gifted and so darn refreshing in his musical approach. He is a storyteller and his folksy, relaxed vibe is a testament to this.

    Love this kid. Love! Him!

    Behold the magic of Jason.

Thanks a million, Purplesmile. You serve crack quite generously. I’m having a great time catching up. (((hugs)))

Jason seems so happy and just think, last year this time he was cleaning pools for his dad’s company. What a difference a year makes. He is such a talented artist, it would have been a shame (for him and for us) if he had never been discovered. I’m so glad that he decided to try out for Idol. That was a major leap of faith for a shy guy.

Talked to Jason! He was in Las Vegas watching the fireworks with David C and Michael J! They were taking a break! No music talk allowed so we gave him that much, but I feel a Vblog coming on! Hope my gut is right! Anyway, thanks again and whoever goes to the concert tomorrow better post some great pics! I wish I could make it to each concert! They are a blast! For sure! The mom is apparently not too thrilled at the prospect of becoming a grandma too soon, though, as she commented on the topic over at DDB, thus:

Yes, he will be a great dad, but could we hold off with making me a gramma! My mom stopped coloring her hair when her first grandchild was born and I was going to do the same, but now I’m going to have to rethink that strategy!

Betsy is cool, indeed, pj (and has her work cut out for her trying to follow all the Jason fansites, haha!). ;)

Crazy – Jason Castro (Full Version San Diego): Video By ThinkOfMeArchie

Oh Jason – do the fans LOVE YOU. And you communicate so well with your audience when introducing this song. I loved the new and renewed Jason.

You really emote this song so well – lots of feeling, so expressive and this adds a greater dimension to your vocal sound.

    Outstanding work.

P.S. I would sing this song a semi-tone or tone lower. I think it would sit better in your natural singing range.

Daydream- Jason Castro (Full Version San Diego): Video By ThinkOfMeArchie

Loved the spoken intro. to this song How true, Jason. How true!

This is my favorite Jason song. It absolutely captures the essence of your artistry – a relaxed, folksy vibe that is so refreshing to hear.

And yet, when the song is a perfect fit, the voice soars to new heights. Your voice effortlessly and seamlessly caresses and reinvents the melodic line of this song.

    Spectacular performance once again. Bravo!

MasterClassLady on the Las Vegas “Crazy” and “Daydream”:

    Uploaded by à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“cspannieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Crazyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=runEG_vDcKs

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t tell you how impressed I am with Jasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s improvement during this live tour.

It was probably always there, but the pressures of the Idol competition clashed in a big way with the relaxed, open and sincere vibe he transmits through his song performances.

When left to perform, without being judged, he does just fine, although he needs to continue to refine and solidify his vocal strengths. All that will come in time – I have faith in Jason.

Overall though, like David A., he sounds tired as well. I hope theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not becoming ill with fatigue

    Daydream à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=5AtepEojaYY

Here comes my favorite Jason song. And I love how he thanks the crowd before he begins. He still sounds a less energized than in previous shows.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s also too bad that he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have enough room to stroll along the perimeter as he did in other venues.

That instrumental segment was perfect for that and the crowd lapped it up when he started to move around during this song. The stage was a little restrictive for this performance – just my opinion.

But, he is a sweetheart and I love the fact that he brings something totally new to this Group of 10. He is a refreshing young talent and, if mentored correctly, will be extremely successful.

Someone should pass these on to Jason (or his family)–not only are they great, especially coming from someone who knows what she is talking about, but she makes useful critiques (so unusual)…

  • rereader

Hello, fellow crack addicts! I have a favor to ask of you. Jason’s MySpace page is getting startlingly enormous numbers of views–he just passed 4 million views yesterday and this morning is at 4.2 million. That’s 200,000 views in less than a day! But the auto-play feature on his music player is down, and out of those 200,000 page views he only got around 16,000 plays yesterday. While you’re online anyway, please open a window with Jason’s MySpace page and run the music player. You can “adjust” the volume, and you don’t need to register with MySpace. For more and why, follow the links.

I hope I’m not breaking any rules, MJ–if so I apologize, I have NO intention of disrupting your blog!

    purplesmile,

Don’t forget this part: “Castro’s rare individuality defined the depressing status quo of “Idol.” ”

It was actually a very negative critique of all things Idol … except for that one kind remark about Carly, some quite nice things to say about Brooke, and the most nice to say (and nothing bad, save a reference to SOTR being 69 years old) about Jasonnn. From a guy. Just saying. :mrgreen_wp:

‘Idol’ finalists return to Southern California

…But leave to Jason Castro, still sweetly naà ¯ve and dreadlocked, to offer up his wide-eyed truth.

“This is the best summer job I’ve ever had,” Castro said when asked how he’s enjoying the tour which reached its fifth stop in Los Angeles on Monday.

“Last summer I was cleaning pools,” he said. “Now I make more in one night than I did all summer.”

It is, as Castro noted, a job, among which the duties including meeting the media for brief interviews the afternoon before each show…

Wow, great links, everyone! Thanks for the smiles!

    In the WTF category:

    From Rickey.org

Archie is the only one to have a guy following him down the autograph line (my friend dubbed him Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Diablo because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s soooo mean. hahaha. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just call him DD). … All of the Jason fans were really disappointed because he never got to come out and sign autographs. They started chanting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“WE WANT JASON!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for a good two minutes straight. So Jason comes RUNNING up to greet his fans.. but DD literally stops and grabs Jason and tells him he has to get on the bus NOW. Long story short, Jason never signed anything and DD definitely is a heartless soul.

Do I have to start getting all paranoid AGAIN?

And more: Jason’s MySpace music player is STILL minus auto-play, and you KNOW there are going to be tens of thousands popping in to see if date night is happening this week. So PLEASE remember to start the music player yourself when you pop in yourself–and maybe a few extra plays, to help make up for some of those who won’t bother? Again, you don’t have to belong to MySpace to do that!

Idol Worship, sans America from the Las Vegas Sun

…No. 4 Jason Castro was effortlessly endearing in his too-short set, serenely sleepy-eyed and strumming a ukulele while sweetly crooning à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Over the Rainbow.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (No one cared that he still mixed and mismatched the words). Castro switched to acoustic guitar for a committed take on the Gnarls Barkley hit à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crazyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (which he auditioned with but we didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see on the show because of rights clearance issues). And he could have a hit right now with his jangly version of the Lovinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Spoonfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 1966 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Daydream,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which perfectly suited his persona as a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“daydreaminà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ boy…à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Season 7′s best performances

Before the past season gets too hopelessly lost in our memories, I wanted to set down in pixels the most memorable performances (as in best) from my standpoint. That standpoint, of course, will differ from a lot of yours (although not substantially — I think practically everything on this list was well-liked by most of you as well) and the broader rankings of whatnottosing.com, which served as a fabulous memory refresher.

Drawn from all the performances in the semifinals as well as the finals, my list originally totaled just 14, which kind of surprised me, but double-checking, those were the performances that stood out in a positive way for me. I reduced it to a top 10 for convenience, but I’ll list the runners-up below it. In order, 10-to-1, here are my Season 7 keepers:

    8. Jason, Over the Rainbow: Just when his dazed-and-confused act was starting to pall, he charmed the world with a ukelele-accompanied version of Hawaiian icon Iz’s version of the Ozzie classic.

    1. Jason, Hallelujah: But in the end, I have to hand the crown to Jason’s touching rendition (and inspired choice) of the Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley classic, a gripping performance of a left-field pick of a great song that summed up everything Idol can be at its best…

From the flyboys LJ community crazy captions thread (by ferrret)

    Dolly P and Jasonnn

    LOL! Literally!

Aaaaaand… here’s the review from Variety. Trade papers don’t come more respected.

Those who present coherent stage personas that connect with their “Idol” performances — the two Davids, Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, Carly Smithson and, surprisingly, Chikezie — are helping their careers.
    [...]
Castro, whose perf was greeted with wide-eyed stares and silence by the kids, has found a comfort zone in between Jack Johnson and George Michael that could become Adult Contemporary gold.

I don’t know that I agree with the assessment in all particulars–but positive is positive. (Compare with the comments on MJ and Brooke, ouch!)
