Season 7 Idol alum, Jason Castro, performed an acoustic concert at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City Monday night (1/23).

Amongst Jason’s familiar tunes, like “Over the Rainbow” and  “Let’s Just Fall in Love” were a few NEW tunes.  Check them out here.

“Never Leave” is about being separated from his family when he’s on the road. Recently, Jason and his wife welcomed a baby girl into their lives.  He may have to leave them sometimes, but the whole family was together in New York City.

Jason was inspired to write “Safe House”  as a result of his involvement with the fight against sex trafficking.  “I Know You’re Right”, a relationship song, rounds out the trio of new tunes.

His songs keep being as bland as ever and the lyrics more basic than before, but his voice is still pretty and lovely. I really wish someone with talent would write for him.

He collaborates with writers all the time.  He was in Nashville writing new songs with folks and this week he was writing new songs in New York with folks.  I think he co-writes with people more often than not.

Anyway, I was there. It was nice to see him. It had probably been over a year. Yes, baby was there and out bopping around during SOTR. His daughter is adorable. His personality was the same, but it’s obvious how he is in a much different place in his life than he was during his Idol days.

He did say he would probably start recording his next album in the next few months.

Does he still have his label deal? I assume he does since I haven’t seen otherwise.

I like his voice – but not too many of his new songs have sucked me in. He is such a sincerely sweet sensitive soul. I’d like him to go a bit more of southern rock but I think he likes the more laidback folk or Christian genre.

Thank you!  Love him and happy to see he has new songs out!  He is so good

OMG, a Jason crack thread? It’s been so long! I expect this thread to bring out some old friends :-) . I still love Jason’s voice and tone.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, he still does have his label deal, yes.

Like raya (hi, raya!) I was at the show at the Rockwood.

He actually sang five new songs–the two others are “Life is Beautiful (working title)” ( http://youtu.be/d-lKlJaDm6M ) and “I’m With You” ( http://youtu.be/9A1dCMpOLnE ).

I agree with raya that Jason’s in a very different place in his life now, and I think it shows in his music–to me, it seems like he’s moving away from pop and perhaps toward a more singer/songwriter vibe, definitely more mature and personal. I think that’s a good thing.

(And I agree with jersey, too–I do love Jason’s voice and tone, and I think both his vocal and instrumental skills have moved forward as well.)

Some voices just resonate with me – Jason’s is one.

I just love this kids voice. Every summer, when everyone is just lounging in the pool and a song of his comes on my ipod, people always ask who it is. It’s just nice chill music to the ears. So underrated. I’ll buy this when it comes out too.

There have been so many wonderful male Idol alumni, but it is Jason Castro that stoled my heart.  From beginning to end, what a sweet journey – minus PaulaGate.

Jersey, you may remember me as Grammie Kari.  Well, I remember Season 7 like it was yesterday, and Jason (and the Davids) made it my favorite Idol season.  I wish him so much successful on his musical journey!

The audition with that older man singing “Cracklin’ Rosie” reminded me how great Jason sounded when he did the introduction to this song on the  Neil Diamond Group Performance.

Love “It Matters to Me” and “If I Were You.”

I fell in love with Jason as soon as he sang Daydream.  Haven’t stopped.  Jason has grown so much and I absolutely love the tone of his voice.  I love his troubadour vibe.   His first CD was great and as someone said highly underrated.   I also agree with Kari (who I think said this)…when he sang Cracklin’ Rose during Neil Diamond Group…IMO…he sounded terrific.   I think that Jason did great on ALL of the songs he sang of Neil Diamond’s.

I’m so happy to hear new songs. I am not much into Christian music so I really like that he went back to this type of song. I’ll look forward to seeing him again live, when he comes to my town.

It also can’t be said enough, that Jason is still a sweet, humble and approachable guy, which to me, speaks volumes.

    Haha, yes a crack thread!
I cannot wait to buy some new music from Jason. :)

I’ve watched Idol every single season, but so far, nothing has beat the CCJ trifecta (Cook Castro Johns). Jason has still been my favorite contestant on Idol ever.

P.S:  It’s so weird to think that 4 whole years have passed…Jason has gotten married and started a family, I’ve graduated from college, and mj’ers have new screen names. My goodness – how time flies!

I never bought Jason’s attempt at pop. This singer/songwriter take is much more his wheelhouse. It might not get him huge play on the radio - which is sad, because I much prefer this kind of music to the Katie Perrys of the world – but it fits him much better. He has a lovely, lovely tone to his voice.

I like the singer/songwritter comment. I’ve always said, since I first saw him on Idol, that he was like a male version of Tracy Chapman.

First of all, my sincere thanks goes out to MJ for honoring me with posting my vids. It makes me very happy to read the positive comments about Jason’s new music. I just wanted to confirm that Jason is still signed to Atlantic. He will start recording his new CD in a couple weeks and hopes to get it out for release soon.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I’m pretty sure Jason said he was doing some writing in New York when he was here too.  My take also was that he likely has more new songs, but he didn’t necessarily have them all ready to perform at the moment.  He was just sort of trying stuff out, so who knows what will or won’t make his new album once he starts recording.  Or what will sound different when he does.

The thing about Jason is, is that besides his offbeat chart, is that I’ve always been drawn to his voice.  I’m not a huge singer/songwriter fan in the sense that while I like some obviously, after awhile I think many of the voices start to sound interchangeable.  I need a particular voice or tone to stand out to me to be at all interested, which is something Jason has in spades.  His voice is interesting, but also pleasing.  If that makes any sense at all.

That makes perfect sense, raya. Jason does have a distinctive and interesting voice, and a soothing one, if that’s the right word.

Glad to have my understanding confirmed, BostonCookie!

I thought Jason had some really lovely music on his first CD’s.  It Matters to Me, That’s What I’m Here For, You Can Always Come Home, You Are, Wait (For a Miracle), Changing Colors….Jason’s new music has proven to be just as interesting. If you’ve lost someone, Never Leave will resonate with you. Jason sounds better than ever and is maturing and it is reflected in his music.  I’m excited to hear he will be recording his new music in the upcoming weeks.

I really like the new music… sweet…Jason sounds great!

I love it when it’s just Jason and Stephen Kanicka playing guitar… they sound great together… and remind me of old you tube videos of Jim Croce playing with guitarist Maury Muehleisen.  Sounds beautiful.
