Jamie Archer - Sex On Fire - X Factor - VIDEO

It’s the second week of auditions for X Factor, Simon Cowell’s reality competition show from across the pond. One of last night’s stand outs was the afro-sporting, Jamie Archer, 33, who got the audience on its feet performing King of Leon’s “Sex On Fire”. (Or, at least that’s what it looked like, who knows with the show’s heavy-handed editing…)

It’s not Jamie’s vocals so much that impressed, but his ability to engage the audience and draw them into his performance. The jury is out for me still, on this guy–I’m not sold on his vocal ability, and have questions about his versatility–but he’s promising.

Ha ha at Simon singing along! I’m surprised he knew the words. Jamie advanced to the next round, with enthusiastic yeses from everybody on the panel.

Video after the JUMP…

I really like him. He’s got a gritty rock voice. Of course, I love the Kings of Leon and that song, but he did a good job. I have to laugh because the song is about STDs! Too funny.

    Simon singing along is priceless.

  • HannaB4

    He’s a good showman, but he’s pitchy. We’ll see….

  • wrigley

Simon seems to be a completely different person on this show…happier and more laid back. I realize the edits play this up, but unless they’re putting a double in his place, the man is clearly more carefree on his home terf.

  • Pam

Simon singing along was just priceless. Hee I agree luv. He is definitely no Adam. lol He’s ok but I’ve seen much better on AI. Just saying.

  • jms

I really liked this guy. He may not make for the long haul on the show, but I think it’s likely that this performance and the resulting exposure will give him a stable career.

It’s got me rethinking my auditions should be without music stance. In order to have a strong pop career these guys need to be both good performers and good singers. While the a cappella auditions will reveal the really good singers, those people are often lousy performers. The magic comes when you have a great singer combined with a great performer. But that is a rare occurrence. And a gifted performer that’s an average or slightly above average singer has a much better chance at a long term career (auto-tune and studio magic are amazing things) than an above average singer that isn’t a great performer as there is no auto-tune that can fix a poor performance.

  • Sherena

I like him a LOT more than Danyl

But then, I didn’t like Danyl, so

I think part of it is that I like this song better.

  • Q3

MJ, I agree completely with you on this one.

  • d. b. cooper

I really liked this. He sang with soul, passion, and grit (so, no, he’s not Adam, if that has anything to do with anything).

Also, the definition of pitchy is:
    1. Full of or covered with pitch.
    2. Resembling pitch in consistency.
    3. Extremely dark; black.

  • Adamme

hhmm.. Jamie Archer without that Afro hair (goes bold), he will look a lot like Chris Daughtry. Definitely better performer than Danyl. Now I really wanted to hear Adam sing Sex On Fire .. wonder how his version would be.. :ponder_tb:

  • lola

“he will look a lot like Chris Daughtry. Definitely better performer than Danyl.’

    - Adamme, you read my mind. Same comments.

  • Lisa

Huge meh for me. Not feeling him.

  • Valentin432

Simon seems to be a completely different person on this show’ ¦happier and more laid back. I realize the edits play this up, but unless they’re putting a double in his place, the man is clearly more carefree on his home terf.

He acts completely differently in the two shows. I think it’s a lot due to the fact that the x factor is more his baby than AI, he is the master in charge of the show.

I’ve been watching some episodes of series 5, and really enjoying it btw, the concept is completely different than AI. I would say that AI tends to make the artists look worse than they are and in the x factor the acts look better than they should.
As for the talent, there is a lot of gimmicks but some people are really good (but apparently S5 is considered very good by the UK standards so perhaps it’s a fluke).

  • hypertwink

I like him. His voice is not the prettiest but there are other things working in his favor. like his likability and his energy. I don’t know how far he’ll go but I hope he does well. And as far as him not sounding like Adam, I say good. Not everyone has to be Adam Lambert.

  • chessguy99

He’s a good pub singer, puts on a good show and makes you feel good. The vocals are marginal for a recording artist, didn’t have enough of the soul/blues vibe that KoL songs require. His attraction for the show is his age and the “my last shot” persona. He’s a natural for the show demographics, 30 women. They’ll keep him on for a good run.

  • Circe

Jamie Archer was okay but could not understand the response he got from the audience and judges; he wasn’t that good. Simon is more at ease when he’s on his turf. He is very ill at ease with our slang and pronunciation; Paula was constantly “translating” for him. He will be lost without her.

  • carmine2008

I like him better than Danyl. But maybe its because of the song…

Also, why does Adam has to be brought up in all of these threads? I didn’t see any comparison with him in the post…

  • Studio57

Um, no. Can’t even compare to KOL. And I like Danyl better as far as charisma goes. I would bet most people loved the performance just because that song is so hot right now.

Why can’t Simon be like that on AI? Jesus buddy- aren’t you getting paid like a gazillion dollars?

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Jamie Archer was good, but Misfitz, a 3 person girl group, was my favourite of the night. They sang Britney Spears’ “Toxic” with a Jazz/swing arrangement. I loved it.

  • AllenTX

I love KOL and this song is super hot. His performance is good, but I feel like it has more to do with the song itself than his singing. I like him more than Danyl though, just because, again, he sang KOL. LOL

  • AdoK

I like the guy as a person but think that he is not a good singer. But maybe it’s not a big deal on The X-factor as long as you entertain and people like you. The problem is there aren’t many songs like this one, then what?

  • Vada

Yeah, I am not sold on this guy. He definitely chose the right song.

  • anijsch

Misfitz, a 3 person girl group, was my favourite of the night. They sang Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ with a Jazz/swing arrangement. I loved it.

They are great. It is something different and a little bit like a time travel to the time of the Andrew sisters.

  • MrsB

Think I need to move – Great Britain here I come!!

I want to vote for this guy (sorry Danyl)………..the only objection I have is his afro is too big for my taste!

Other than that – he has me hook, line & sinker……loved the song, loved his stage presence & interaction with the audience, loved his looks………holy toledo……..am I FINALLY turning fangirly over this kind of rocker!

    Better late than never……………………..YOWZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wub_tb:

    I’m with you, Sunn.

Just got done watching the re-run this afternoon and thought that Jamie was fine on that song and performed well, but for me he brought nothing to it – it was just good karaoke. I am very suspicious of his versatility too – if he gets through let’s see what happens in, for example, Abba week… :blink_tb:

Miss Fitz were much more interesting for me – though I have to confess I was already predisposed to like them if they were at all good because the lead singer, Gemma, was cruelly robbed IMO in Season 3. I always felt she was sacrificed in order not to compete with Simon’s golden-girl-in-the-making Leona since they would have been appealing to more or less the same segment of voters (female ballad lovers), so I’m delighted to see her getting another chance.

If that was an unenhanced vocal from Miss Fitz (I am not entirely sure it was tbh), then it was fab; Andrews Sisters meets Britney Spears is not something you hear every day :mrgreen_wp: I’m a little concerned that they don’t have the “look” for a girl group, but we’ll see. I’m hoping they’ll make the live shows anyway.

  • MrsB

MJ needed to come back on to let you know how entertaining this post was – feel a little uncomfy for a sunday morning listening to a rocker this many times, dancing & getting a groove……….almost like I’m comitting a sin or something :devil_tb:

    Thanks……………………………………….I think :)

  • carmine2008

Yeah likem shouldn’t we be comparing these guys to Kris Allen? After all Allen WON AI’ ¦Adam just came in SECOND place’ ¦

But seriously, I think this entire season, especially S9 of of AI, people will be comparing person X to AL’ ¦He has upped the ante for these types of shows. And DC started it IMO.

Well, if you have to compare him with anyone, why does it have to be Adam (or Kris)? What is the rationale? Because they like the same song?

For me, if you have to compare x to y, they must at be at least similar. Otherwise, there’s no point of comparison.

  • spinastory

Ok where do I vote… :drunk_tb: oh wait dang it I not allowed.. sigh!

That was soooooooo much fun.. :clap_tb:

  • templeton

Meh. His vocals were mediocre. The way that the crowd seemed engaged in the song was impressive but I didn’t honestly get why, with his vocals. Can’t believe that Simon even knew the song and sang along, lol.

  • Duke

but, I really like this guy. Much more than Susan Boyle 2.0.

  • Duke

OK. this chick was from the same episode. I’m not posting her audition because she was incredible, but the way she smiles after the versus might be the most infectious smile i have ever seen. I think she might be the most likable person on the planet.

  • BeckyMD

Simon is different person in his home.

    I didn’t finish this video.

  • birchtree

Oh I wish Simon was more like this on AI.

  • Susan M.

I enjoyed it, like I enjoyed Danyl. They both have great charisma and showmanship, but it’s REALLY easy to lose (or gloss over) mediocre vocals with all of the crowd noise, backing track and editing. Not that I’m saying he has mediocre vocals (or Danyl); it’s just too difficult to tell. Great song choice though.

I can definitely see jms’ points about maybe they should be screening for performance first, but I really get now how they do build from the “ground up,” by trying to establish of they have a voice first (a cappella), then challenge that and build. Perhaps this is where AI begins to fall apart a bit ‘“ they don’t nurture the performance aspect quite so much and the inexperienced contestants flounder.

Yet, I think this is going completely in the opposite direction. I’d like somewhere in between and yeah, the OTT editing, crowd, judges, hosts, friends and family reactions are just manipulative.

  • Susan M.

After watching the clips from Duke and Sunn (both acts I liked every bit as much, if not better than Jamie), I do have to ask, “Who is that Simon guy?” Either he’s been playing in Paula’s medicine cabinet or it’s Cowell’s affable twin.

Completely. Different. Person. It’s like he gets completely sucked into the schmaltz of this format.

All the contestants I have seen so far have been incredibly likable though ‘“ they did tremendous screening in that respect.

  • tierbee

That was fun and Simon singing along is adorable :) . I don’t like the editing, though, it’s very… processed?

  • Lux

I like him, maybe he doesn ´t have a great voice but he is a good performer and charismatic, I want to see what he can do with other songs. Duke, I saw that video yesterday and I tought the same about that smile, she ´s lovely.

  • EveLambert

One more thing – what is the age to cut-off auditioning for American Idol – because this guy is 33 years old, and Susan Boyle was in her 40s – maybe American Idol needs to extend the age for auditioning instead of bringing on the babies in their teens and have them grow up real fast, they have plenty of times and plenty tries at auditioning but when the age creeps up like this one here, Jamie, you are forced to do something real quick – fast and in a hurry.

    edited out off-topic stuff

  • riaspark17

This guy’s voice just went to heck on the head of his phrasing. Don’t know if he was overexcited, nervious, or what…but yeah, that killed his voice for me. I did like the gruff of his voice though.

  • Gigi3

Adam hasn’t actually sung SOF, so I really understand how anyone is comparing. (Though I’d really like to hear Adam sing SOF.)

Heh. Put me on the list to see that. It would be epic.

  • Sassycatz

Everytime I see the name “Danyl,” I want to say “Darryl.” I really should get my eyes checked.

I can definitely see jms’ points about maybe they should be screening for performance first, but I really get now how they do build from the ‘ground up,’ by trying to establish of they have a voice first (a cappella), then challenge that and build. Perhaps this is where AI begins to fall apart a bit ‘“ they don’t nurture the performance aspect quite so much and the inexperienced contestants flounder.

AI definitely nutures contestants less than they used to, and that’s not saying much. Once they decided to go to “top 36,” last season, and only gave the contestants one shot to make it, they eliminated any chance for someone to come in a little raw, find their legs, and polish their performance over three weeks. You lose a lot of diamonds in the rough that way. Further, that system, also has the potential to hurt a more seasoned performer who gets a little nervous being on TV for the first time. The new semi-final format was an epic fail, leaving us with a relatively weak top 12. Some hand picked by the judges, for reasons beyond actual talent.

Completely. Different. Person. It’s like he gets completely sucked into the schmaltz of this format.

I think what Simon likes about the X-Factor is all the attention and control the judges get. You can see on Idol how much he’d like to gain more say and attention. Like on the X-Factor, they instituted that grand entrance by the judges, implying that they’re the stars, not the contestants. Plus, they created the judges save and the opportunity to have the judge not only pick a song for someone during top 3, but even suggest how they should sing it. While these changes did not all come from the X-Factor, they definitely have the flavor of the X-Factor, where the judges mentor a group of contestants and orchestrate their performances. It really leaves the performer with much less control, which is the bad thing for an AI contestant — and an X-Factor contestant for that matter — because it doesn’t force them, via their own decision-making, to show us who they are and how they are going to shape their career in the real world. Danny would’ve done much better on X-Factor because he needed to be led by the hand; Kris on the other hand would’ve felt muzzled and frustrated, I am sure. Adam, I don’t know. He’s from theater, so he’s used to taking direction and singing songs that aren’t “him.”

One more thing – what is the age to cut-off auditioning for American Idol – because this guy is 33 years old, and Susan Boyle was in her 40s – maybe American Idol needs to extend the age for auditioning instead of bringing on the babies in their teens and have them grow up real fast, they have plenty of times and plenty tries at auditioning but when the age creeps up like this one here, Jamie, you are forced to do something real quick – fast and in a hurry

Susan Boyle was from Britain’s Got Talent .. where there is no age restriction as with AGT … plus no restriction on what you do .. sing, dance, act, juggle, light your own farts or whatever.

Jamie Archer is on the X Factor which is our follow on show from Pop Idol (which is what American Idol is based on).

The X factor has 4 categories … each mentored by one of the judges. (under 25′s boys, under 25′s girls, over 25′s male/female and groups).

Everyone auditions together and those who are put through go to bootcamp where they are put into their specific categories. The top 6 from each category then progress to the “judges houses” round where the judge who is metoring them takes them away to their home (or a pretendy home that looks good on the camera in some cases. Simon usually takes his group to one of his homes abroad, Cheryl takes hers to some beach side villa in europe, Dannii takes hers to her home in Ibiza and poor old Louis lot just hop over Irish Sea to Ireland).

Here the judges pic three contestants to represent them on the live show. Which is a bit unfair as you could find that one particular group is top heavy with talent but there are only three places and another group could be weak so a not so good contestant manages to get a place in the finals.

This is where the problem could lie with Danyl and Jamie .. they are both in the over 25′s category (mentored by Simon) .. but as we are only 2 weeks into initial auditions and we still have a lot more to go it could be that that one of them may miss out on a place in the final if there are more potentially good over 25′s to come.

phew .. sorry for the long post

  • bmms

Wow! Jamie was amazing. :thumbup_tb: You’re right MJ, his vocals are not the best, BUT, he is an interesting and captivating performer! Much better than that Danyl fellow. MJ, please have videos of Jamie on his upcoming performances.

I like this guy…and i like this audition process….Jamie and Danyl have had the best auditions ive ever seen….i love it…with the music and the crowd interaction.

  • Mtlfan

I liked the guy, very entertaining performance but not the best voice i agree. I preferred Miss Fitz .. that was VERY good!!!

  • LisaE

I’m not crazy about him at all. His voice was mediocre. People compared him to Daughtry looks-wise, but I thought he kind of sounded like Daughtry but without the same depth and strength of voice. His performance was also annoying. OTT cheesy like the last guy from this show that was featured on this blog.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I enjoyed Jamie Archer far more than I did Danyl (Johnson, was it?)- he has heart. Danyl was manic and I couldn’t hear him anyway. Jamie hit a couple of bum notes but I still liked him better.
This Daryl Markham persons edit tried to manipulate me and he should have used a more upbeat song, so meh him.

Might be just me but I would like a full group of auditions with no backstories at all- just a cold open audition. Let me evaluate them without being led, then tell me their stories later on after I have a feel for them.

I’m certain it will never happen as it doesn’t play into their little reality show game but I’d sure like to try it.

  • Dr. Tracey

I like his voice. I’ll vote for him over Danyl.

  • Sherena

His performance was also annoying. OTT cheesy like the last guy from this show that was featured on this blog.

Part of that has to do with the editing of this show I think. They really like to play up the cheese.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/RemusL/ RemusL

Who is this smiling, laughing Simon who sings along and applauds after the performance? I’ve never seen this person before.

I *think* Jamie sang well but I really wish they had filmed him from just a single camera and dispensed with all the fancy edits and reaction shots from the judges and those backstage.

  • butte009

Simon seems to be a completely different person on this show’ ¦happier and more laid back.

I’m not seeing it in the first two episodes of this season. He can get just as snarky on the X Factor IMO.

The Misfits were by far the best of the night for me…for you…

The guy who’s brother died of Lung cancer was touching. Not sure he’ll last long though.

Jamie was just meh for me. Reminds me too much of fro boy that lost to Kelly in Season 1 of AI – whatever that guy’s name was….

  • revcat

I liked Jamie a lot! He’s definitely a good entertainer, but I have no idea how far he’ll go, absolutely no clue. Didn’t care for the Pointer/Andrew sister throwbacks at all, never did like that style. And although I thought the girl from Trinidad was good, I think I am more in love with her accent than I am with her singing.

Go Jamie, and don’t lose the ‘fro! :laughing_tb:

Thanks, Duke. Based on their auditions, I like Rozelle more than either Danyl or Jamie. There is absolutely no need for the schmaltzy editing and background music. Her vocal performance is more than enough to impress.

  • NYCSlain

    Ummm…..no.

  • kansasfemale

I’m with MJ on this one….I don’t think I really could tell what the VOCAL abilities were.

He may falter when he doesn’t have a huge track behind him and he can’t strut his stuff. This is a killer song, and it will make practically anyone with enough vocal projection sound reasonable.

There seems to be a big ego thing as well going on…..I think Danyl has that too however, so maybe it’s just me. I didn’t particularly care for the quotes Jamie made about his dating practices, so maybe that is shading my judgement??

There are several others, who’s voice would engage me for more than one song….Joseph being MY frontrunner….

but I’m not sure either of these leading men ( Danyl and Jamie ) will/would be good enough to get me to vote for them

  • FreddyFudpucker

I think Jamie proven now that he has a lot more vocal talent than you guys gave him credit for here…..For example check out last night’s live performance on x-factor:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/TheXFactorUK#p/u/7/ZVCXxBMVv2U

Another example was his song when he was at Simon’s house during the period where the mentors were picking their final acts for the live shows:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/TheXFactorUK#p/u/53/T5EesKW5AqI
