ETA: It’s actually 79 on Amazon Pop at the moment

I always used the (all) music number – but, it’s #35 on Amazon Rock! :)

I’m not sure that Amazon is necessarily a baramoter.  AFAIK, Wal-Mart is top 2 for cd sales and MOABD is in the Top 5 there.

And apparently I am one of the few fans that really like LMB. Just not as much as HTH :)

I do too.  I just found it entertaining to see it so high in pop lol.

I’m not expecting huge numbers for James’ first week. I do hope they’re ‘decent’ though; it would be great to be surprised with numbers around 60K.

Walmart online has nothing to do with Walmart retail stores though.   Walmarts online ranking is a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket compared to what CD’s will sell in the actual stores when albums drop (see what I said about David, Archie also ranked very high on there and sold poorly)  The problem with many Walmarts is even though its #2 in terms of music sales many Walmarts cut down on the size of their music dept and good display is hard to get. James happens to be releasing on a day thats crowded and most likely going to see Rihanna, Daughtry, Nickelback and other more established artists getting the best endcaps. Even Lauren’s album I had a hard time finding in my Walmart.

That’s why many of us aren’t too concerned about first week sales numbers. With more gems like HTH on the album, it’s more likely the kind of album that could really be successful over time rather than have great first week sales numbers.

I’m gonna predict HTH will be the next single sent out to radio, and I have a hunch it’ll be very well received. :D  Slow and steady. And keep those hawt videos coming, Wind Up, lol.

Yes orders from his website will count, but do you really think those fan packages are getting huge orders?

I don’t think those fansite sales ever amount to much for anyone.  People who visit fansites (or even know about them for that matter) are a drop in the bucket compared to people who hear about and buy their music in more general, main-stream ways.

David was also #1 on Walmart for a while. IIRC the pre-orders on his site ended up only being around 8,000 when all was said and done and he only sold around 46,000 albums his first week.

I’m not sure that Walmart ranking means anything.  It appears to just take into account the online pre-orders.  Not that many people pre-order compared to those who actually buy after the album comes out.  And, the number of people who are more likely to buy online pales in comparison to the number of people who will buy in the actual store.  I just think that Walmart ranking is far too small a sample to be indicative of anything.

I’m not sure what James will sell his first week, but I believe he just hasn’t had enough main-stream exposure to go over 50K.  That’s not a criticism, and it’s not an opinion based on the quality of the music (I haven’t listened to it yet).  I just don’t think enough people actually know about James, or that he has an album coming out.

I could be wrong, and I do hope he sees some success.

It looks like the video has the potential to redeem the awful LMB.  James has proven 3 times that he can’t sing it live.  Maybe Windup will let him sing HTH on the promo tour, which I assume will continue.

I sorta feel the same way about not enough main-stream exposure to go over 50K, SpenserJ, but it would still be wonderful if he does start really picking up steam in these next 10 days (not much time to do it, I know) and surprises us.

I just looked at the upcoming releases from HDD for 11-21 (had thought Taylor Swift was also releasing then, but HDD shows the next week instead), and there are so many big names releasing that day, not to mention the big names who have JUST released, it’s probably not likely James (or Javier Colon either) will be in the Top 10 or 15 the first week.

Given that Lauren sold 60K her 1st week and has had much more promotion than James, I would be surprised if James sold more than 30-40K his 1st week. Especially since he is releasing in a very competitive week with several big name artists and neither of his singles has gotten much traction on radio (so far).

But we will see. Scotty far outdid what I was predicting for him, so maybe James will as well.

I’m personally predicting anything from 30 to 60k, and that’s considered decent numbers for first week sales in his genre (opening numbers for even the top hard rock & metal artists, vary from as low 10k to as high 90k). LMB may be going to pop radio but James is still being promoted mostly to the rock & metal media.

Well, MOABD seems to be moving up on Amazon today, for whatever reason – snippet of HTH or preview of the video maybe, but now it’s #33 in rock, #72 in pop and #79 overall.

  • Barometz02

James is an American Idol contestant who is releasing an album after 5 months of twice weekly TV exposure to a weekly audience of over 20 million. You can’t compare him to normal hard rock artists who don’t get such a huge exposure. There is a reason why a lot of idols have been dropped from their record companies after releasing just one album.

I have pretty low expectations for initial week sales number for MOABD…I’d be pleasantly suprised with any number above 30K. There are too many thing working against the numbers.

First: Ever since seeing the StandUp sales figures from the summer my assumption has been that tons of peeps loved to watch James perform and voted for him on Idol to keep watching him live but are not hardcore enough to purchase just anything he puts on the shelf.

Second: Rock is just not selling well. Nickelback single has been sitting in the #1 iTunes Rock spot for weeks but is #63 for all music. Daughtry has one song at #8 rock but is sitting at #188 overall. James’ genre alone is not going to set the charts on fire unless looking only at ranking w/in rock. The #1 rock album is sitting at #11 overall and that’s extremely high for rock.

Third: the competition that week is brutal…..especially with known entities like Nickelback, Daughtry, and a Bob Seger remake being released the same day in this small-market genre.

Fourth: Rock people are generally very skeptical about anything that remotely appears popish. And American Idol, despite its diversity in genres this season, is correlated with pop music. I believe his appearance on Idol to be a huge hindrance in appealing to those who listen to his style of music and who are outside the Idol-bubble. He’s trying to sell to people with initial misgivings and suspicion so either he’s got to have more kicka$$ songs like HTH to win them over or sway them by hearing him on tour.

With all this, I don’t think it would be fair to compare James’ sales numbers/chart rankings with other Idols. Country and pop has a much bigger market at this time. The definition of success for James is going to be much different than the other Idols primarily b/c his style of music just doesn’t appeal to as wide an audience as the other Idols.

I ended up asking Dylan directly lol, and he replied he DID THE SOLO! So happy this awesome track has Dylan shredding on it. Perfect!

Love the preview.  I’m glad the video looks like it’s going to be great rather than cheap.  It shows that the director(s) are all taking James seriously, as they don’t often do for former idol contestants.
I’m really liking the song more, too.

I went to the ‘So You Think You Can Dance” show in San Jose 2 weeks ago.  During the intermission they had videos of Scotty, Lauren and of course Pia.  Even in James’ hometown area no video of him.

There are many fans who like LMB and I am one of them.  I do think HTH is terrific.
